I was at this game, ND annihilated UT's defense in the first half. This was a gimmee...until that blocked punt for a TD. The BIG MO definitely turned. Conservative Lou, became even more conservative Lou. The UT defense stiffened and their offense came alive. I am a ND fan, but give UT credit, they persevered. They also won the game. It was like being on the +180 of the sine wave, only to end at the -180 of the sine wave. What a kick in the bag! Congrats UT, you made that nice comeback.
I was there for both the 1990 and 1991 games. Either team could have won either game, but in 1990, ND had the Rocket and he was the difference. The 1991 game pretty much game down to the kicking game and total lack of a passing game that ND didnt have either. The number of clutch plays by Tennessee on 4th down and great calls changed what should have been a blowout into a classic
Johnny Majors' teams were grossly underrated. The 1985 "team was special, and if Tony Robinson hadn't been hurt, there is no telling what they would have accomplished. But, Darryl Dickey more than handled the quarterback position!
This is the greatest comeback ever in the HISTORY Of College Football. No team has ever been this far behind at South Bend and beaten Notre Dame. This game has never gotten the credit north of the Mason-Dixon Line because of northern politics. Ni team has ever been so far behind at Notre Dame stadium. One great consolation for the late great Coach John Majors. Coach Majors went 10-0 at tailback in 1956 and northern politicos robbed him of the Housman and gave the Housman to a 2-8 Paul Hornung Sweet revenge. Yankee politics once again stole the Housman from smithy great Tennessee QB when Peyton Manning who won 40 games at Tennessee was robbed of the Housman by a Michigan DB. Yankee politics again to the rescue.
That Michigan DB was Charles Woodson, a HOF and one of the most accomplished defensive players in college/pro football history. I get your sentiment though.

Even when your team wins a huge game like that, you still lose. Paul Hornung proved how great he was in the NFL regardless of winning the HEISMAN trophy on a 2-8 team. Once upon a time if ND was within 5 spots of number one they were gonna be crowned national champs or like this game, UT would have never been allowed to come back in 1972 like they did here. That block in the back that was called on Ismails punt return in the Orange Bowl wouldn't have been called in 1970. ND won the national title in 66 and 77 when they had no business doing so. The worst part was in 1977, a guy told me, he worked for the AP, they would give the title to ND if they beat Texas before the game. Ara even admitted he had been told in 1966 ND would be given the title with just a tie with Mich St. Beano Cook once said on ESPN that every year the ND Quarterback will always be a leading candidate for the heisman. That's how rampant the biased politics were back then. Thank goodness we don't live in those days anymore. I also agree with your Peyton Manning point. Danny Wuerffel had just won the heisman and there was no way an SEC player was gonna win it again the next year. Again, the rampant bias that existed has almost gone away and the best team and best player wins, as they should.

For a long time, not so much today but for a long time Northern politics was very much involved in intercollegiate sports. Once the biased politcs got out ND has been pretty much an afterthought.
I'm glad Lou fired his OC and DC later. This and the Penn State game were just train wrecks. At least the season ended on what I consider Lou's best bowl victory
I was at both the Tennessee and Penn State game that season. Two of the longest drives back home to Chicago from South Bend ever. But I did attend the Sugar Bowl that season. That was a fantastic experience! Win, lose or draw, I still love Notre Dame! Go Irish ☘️ This year is going to be special. The best one in years.
I always found him irritating. After USC beat the heck out of Oklahoma, he made this statement about how no team that runs the ball most of the time on 1st down will win a national title again. This in spite of the fact that USC, especially in 2005, constantly leaned on the run.

The Score Bug was the greatest thing that happened to watching football on TV. Up there with the line of scrimmage and first down markers.

Not a Vol fan, but I AM a bluegrass fan, and something made me smile with hearing Rocky Top blare after they blocked that kick.
