can i feed my Roland v-1hd video switcher to this device and take the micro sd card out of the black magic and insert it to my cell phone and upload it to youtube? i use a sony hdr as 300 action cam to film then i take the sd card out put it in my cell phone and upload it raw, very simple.. what format is it? i hope its mp4. please help and thanks
+JBG TRAVELS you can definitely feed the v1hd into it and record to an SD card. As for a micro card, I'm not sure. You'll need a fast one! I'm also unsure if you could plug it into your phone as it only records in ProRes or DNxHD. There is no MP4 recording so you'll not be able to access the files on the SD card!
Love your series, we are looking to expand our Video Department to include some live broadcasting, and your Show and Tell videos have been incredibly helpful. You commented on it briefly at the end of this video, but from what I gather the BM Video Assist can actually help circumnavigate a DSLR's recording limit, then? That would allow us to clear a rather pesky hurdle, since we primarily shoot on two Canon 7D's.
+Robert Mitcham hey - thanks for watching and I'm glad these are useful! You would be right that the video assist can help you there! Just plug it in and turn off any menu overlays (in pretty sure that's possible with the 7D). You'll also want to make sure you turn off the auto-sleep function too. It'll just keep recording until the card fills up! Thanks :)
I have an issue with it on my mirrorless, I have it set up on clean feed but it still records the focusing point of the camera, any suggestion on how to fix the? thank you
Thanks for the great video... I was wondering if this Assist Monitor can be used as Media Player via HDMI while the mini XLR input have external audio... on an ATEM for example, I want the audio feed from the monitor to be constantly available even when the media isn't in play (eg, move to a different cam)
great video👍 but with high quality recording. i thought why bm just make Sdcard on it?it would be high value cost just for long recording. and it's mean not cost effective production for newbie and home production. 😢😩
Hi there, great explanation! I'm looking to buy a unit like this..i don't own a laptop but i was wondering if the video files will play on my Android phone? I think my phone displays mp4 files.
One question: I use the Video assist in combination with the Atem mini pro. There I can chose between Multi-View, Program and cameras. How can I activate multiview, but record the Program on the SD-Card inside the video assist? Is this possible? I only can record what I can see on the screen, nothing else. Is there a solution? Thank you.
That is not possible. Whatever comes out of the HDMI output on the ATEM is what you will record on the Video Assist. The "solution" is to get a ATEM Mini Extreme with 2 HDMI outputs, alternatively you can record to SSD on your ATEM Mini Pro.
Could you plug this into the HDMI slot of your avermedia recorder and monitor what it is recording or can you only monitor what the avermedia recorder is recording through the app on your laptop?
Great video, Quick question. Is there a way whereby, if you record via the monitor it will trigger the record in your camera or vice versa? only because you would have to be quick to hit 2 record buttons without missing anything if you get what I mean.
Some very specific monitors and cameras have a “trigger record over HDMI” feature though I’m not sure which ones at all. Might be worth looking at the manual of your particular gear!
Nice presentation. I'm using an external microphone on my Canon DSLR would this set up transfer (automatically) to this BM unit when linked via HDMI? I also presume the record/playback control facility on the BM overides the video controls on the camera?
Sadly some canon DSLRs will not output audio over HDMI. A good way to test is to plug it into a tv you have and try it. If it looks and sounds as expected then the Video Assist will work the same :)
HELP! When I record video I always get the warning ⚠️ of skipping frame. Apparently because of the SD card. Can someone help me by sharing ALL the details of the one that would work just fine? 🙏🏽 THANK YOU!!
How loud is the fan noise of the 5 inch Blackmagic Video Assist? I need a 5-inch monitor for my shoulder rig setup. I've tried the shogun flame which is too heavy for my c200b rig and too noisy for a camera mounted mic. I'm trying to decide between the Blackmagic 5-inch, ninja v, smallhd, and other available options. I will meanly use it to monitor since the c200b can't output 4k 10 bit signal. It only supports 10-bit hd via hdmi and sdi, and 10-bit 2k via sdi output. Thanks for helping!
I now have the BMD 5" and the Ninja V - Both have similar noise levels so far. Not sure which might be best for your setup, but I would say the Ninja V features (on screen displays etc) are a huge plus for me!
Thanks much for the reply! I've found the smallhd focus to be compact and in this case perfect for my rig. It has no built in fan, while the size and image quality are also good for monitoring. Though its quality might not be as great as the Blackmagic or Atomos, but I really like all the features. The C200 does offer much output options, and I would like the recoding feature but not a must for my workflow. Thanks again for helping out!@@heretorecord
so you can record on the sd with a lut on this monitor without having an sd recording on your camera right? also, would it be as accurate via hdmi like the cameras screen to use for live focusing on video? I have a d80 and I do that but I need a bigger monitor and external recorder. This looks like the one I guess. Thanks!
I just got one of this thing. Now I updated it to the latest firmware that contains luts. When I load luts into it via the software on my pc, they work really nice but after I poweroff the device it forgets all the luts and other settings too. I don't have batteries for it though, but it happens even when the dc adapter is plugged in. If I switch off the device, it forgets everything. That's not cool. Is it the absence of batteries or is it the firmware version? Should I get the older firmware? I like the features with this one.
Many thanks for this great review. One question, is it true that recording to Apple Prores in a monitor like this one gives mor image quality than recording to the camera? Have you experienced it?
+sleeping creativity that is often true as the internal Record of a camera can be heavily compressed, whereas the camera will output an uncompressed signal through the HDMI output. This means that you could technically record a much higher quality version using a device like the Video Assist. Things can differ per camera but this is generally true!
Would this monitor work as a monitor only (not a recorder) on a Panasonic Gh5? Basically, I just want to make sure I am in focus and be able to still record in-camera full 4k 60p etc...
Oh that is awesome! The GH5 is a beast of a camera! I'm in love with it. So, I notice the Blackmagic Video Assist has a little bit of a delay? I haven't found one single monitor without a delay. Is this normal? I just don't ahve the budget to go buy an atomos nor do I need a recorder. I just want clean output to make sure I'm staying in focus while I am glidecamming (also another reason why I want a 5" monitor).
+Bowcut Productions if you are noticing the delay via this video then it's more likely to be the way the video was made. I have not seen delay on it in my experience.
I am trying to record proxy files to the SD card in the monitor. But the metadata is burned into those files. Does a anyone know how to get rid of that or stop it from happening?
Possibly but not easily. You'd need an analogue to digital convertor to pump out an HDMI signal. The last time I tried this it wouldn't work. The other way is to get hold of a broadcast spec VHS deck with sdi output - that is more likely to work.
this device is pretty cool but it's a shame it's codecs do not record for a long time. the Avermedia product records for a much longer time. Shane that Avermedia was a real pain for us.
From the camera: you can't have a different frame rate in the Video Assist - it picks up the video type (ie 50i, 50p, 25p etc) automatically along with the frame rate.
Hi, I have just bought the Video Assist 12G HDR. It is a very well-made piece of equipment and I'd love to keep it BUT it has one enormous flaw and this is in its playback. For example, if you record one clip from a 1080p25 fps source you can view it no problem. If you then record a clip at, say, 1080p29 fps you won't be able to see the first one any more! The clip browsing is bad enough (you have to tab through all your clips - there is no list of files) but this crazy bug means that half the functionality - i.e. it's ability to play back - is severely compromised. It also has a discrepency in the number of files that it list on the menus. In the media menu it gives the correct number but on the main screen the number it gives you is actually only the number of files recorded in the same format as the most recently recorded clip. I have detailed this problem here: forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=132775 Please Mr Here to Record - if you have any influence with BlackMagic please will you ask them to fix this bug. (For those of you who see this in the future, the software version on my Video Assist is currently 3.3.1)
when not recording to a SD card in the monitor, but just use it as a monitor, I can't replay my footage that was captured to my camera on the monitor, why is that?
+Zino de Groot from reading a few forums, it seems like the Video Assist and gH4 don't play well with each other! Not too sure what the solution might be :(
+Agence DSTP thanks for all the questions! It you check out 9mins and 53secs into my "Full Conference Setup" video that you just commented on, you'll see what I do for conference audio!

Good and informative video! But from my own experience I'm not so happy with the Blackmagic monitor. It's makes a lot of noise. Not only when you change the format, but all the time. It's not only the fan sound but a small high frequency noise from the batteries or power supply. And I don't think the picture quality is that good.. It's hard to tell when it is in focus and not just from the image, without peaking, because the quality is a bit off. Blackmagic does not sell accessories like carry bags for it, or sun protectors. For the price, it is an ok monitor, but not the best monitor I have used...
Thanks for the comment - I must say that I have had a very different experience with my unit. Yes, there is a small fan noise when turning on and switching formats, but asides from that I've never heard the fan at all. Nor have I heard the high-frequency noise so you might have gotten a bad one :( Coming from using a smartview duo, this was a huge bump in improvement for me, so focusing and picture quality was (by contrast) much better on this monitor. That said, I wish I got the 7" version as getting perfect focus would have been a lot easier. Maybe you have found a good monitor for a similar price (that also records) as I'd love to know! Cheers, John
+ANTONIS DAVIS that should work no bother. If you want to test it, plus it into your tv at home and hit record. If it works with the TV then I can see why it wouldn’t work with the Video Assist!

Yeah pretty much any camera. Basically if you can hook the camera up to a tv and it looks good, then it should work on this. There is also a 4K model for cameras that are 4K :)
No need to change FPS - that is done on whatever source you are using. For example, if you have a camera connected then you’ll want to change the FPS on the camera.
Just to clarify - This unit uses Micro BNC connectors not DIN connectors. Great video with lots of information. Thanks.
Dang. They really should let us move the zoom around. Great review.

the 7 inch one has audio inputs....

Would this monitor work with the Sony A7 III?
how does it look outdoors in bright sunlight? What is the nit or brightness rating?
You’d likely need a shade in the outdoors. I would recommend that for sure!

How do you release the batteries
There is a little button that you press next to the battery.
Having a problem recording the audio im using canon 760D hdmi is not including the audio in recording. Do you know any solution for that?
Sadly this is a very common limitation for canon DSLRs as they simply do not output audio over hdmi. You may want to record your audio separately
Hey. Can this videomonitor have a SDI in signal and give me hdmi output
Does this change or alter the image from the main camera. What I mean is, does it improve the quality of the image of the camera?
Not really. It will just record whatever you have put into it.
Can I loop out to my computer and use it as a capture card to live stream and record to a hard drive plugged in to my computer ?
You can indeed do that - The Video Assist will send out the input signal over SDI and HDMI.
do you know how to change the frame rate?
From the camera: you can't have a different frame rate in the Video Assist - it picks up the video type (ie 50i, 50p, 25p etc) automatically along with the frame rate.

No waveform monitoring?
Nope. I believe it’s in the 4K model though!
Here to Record unfortunately it is double the price. For that much I might as well go with atomos.

This is SDI or mini SDI?
This is Mini SDI which is called a DIN connection instead of BNC
Can this device marking for video file ?

how is it on daylight use?

How to chagne fps I dont get it :(
No need to change FPS - that is done on whatever source you are using. For example, if you have a camera connected then you’ll want to change the FPS on the camera.
