Love it how Cleveland is just not fussing about things: We're here to help you. It's XL. You can Rip it. We don't overprice it. More good stuff from the makers of the incomparable Crossy wedge.
Very underrated brand. I bought the Cleveland Launcher XL driver and I am so impressed! They have always made great wedges, so it really is no surprise that they can make irons to match anything you could want.
Hell...I still play my TA-3 irons and 588-RTG wedges from the early 2000s! I just refresh the grooves on the wedges every once and a while and they still play wonderfully.
I remember when beginning to play 40 years ago, all of us north of single digit handicap were playing chunky Pings, Clevelands, thick topline Callaways, etc. Very few were obsessing over looks or even feel. We were all having fun, lugging around bruised clubs in grass stained bags.

Mark is amongst my got to online reviews. What he says matches up with my experience. On my third set of Cleveland irons. TA5's, CG16's last year's Launcher XL's. Spent years trying to gap wedges, went all Cleveland about a decade ago. Now carry CBX Zipcore 46*, 50*, 54* a more solid feel. 58* RTX ZipCore for hard wet sand. The price value cannot be beat. In my old age, 73, have gone to ReCoil graphite shafts. Very low dispersion. Get fitted or know your swing better than the fitters, plenty of YourTube reviews to see pros and cons. Remember most of thou guys are swinging 10 to 40 mph than you and consistently good strikes.
I was fitted for the Cleveland UHX Launcher irons and I love them these remind me of them. Cleveland is so underrated in the iron market. I wont get rid of mine I like them too much even though they are about 4 /5 years old. Senior flex 2 degrees flat 6-GW
I think some of the bigger brands are pricing themselves out the market, I haven’t spent more than £700 on a set of irons ever because the differences between the most expensive and the mid priced ones are minuscule.
cleveland has always been a good value proposition. i wish they would bring back a modernized version of the tour actions/ta tours to compete with the likes of 790/770s
They have the srixon range of irons if they brought them out in the Cleveland name, they would be competing against themselves then they would have two lines of the same irons
The biggest issue for me is that when I started (34 years ago) irons came in sets of 9. Now they are in sets of 6 so you get half as many clubs for 4-5 times the price so that's something like 8-10 times more expensive and I don't think many people will have seen wages increase that much even in 34 years! I've only had 3 sets of irons in that time. Even DTC clubs seem pretty expensive to me. The only way I'm buying a set of irons is a discontinued model that's at least 50% off its original retail price or possibly used but then some of the prices of used clubs are probably worse than new!
If I have to carry for some reason then I would usually only bother with half a set so probably 4 irons in that and I would think many golfers might benefit from having fewer clubs but the price of clubs is now beyond ridiculous. Green fees are also getting to be a joke. A modest set of six irons even from a DTC brand will be £500 at least. Add in a hybrid or fairway wood, driver and putter even from one of the cheaper brands and you will be talking £1000 for maybe 10 clubs and then a bag can easily set you back 200 more. Throw in a pair of golf shoes, balls etc and it quickly adds up. I don't think golf could really ever be classed as cheap but compared to now it was much more affordable when I started.
I love my cbx zipcore wedges. I asked a local pro who carried Cleveland/Srixon what they made in irons to blend - guess we now know. 😉 I'll be getting some.
Had Cleveland ta2 forged irons , also had the cg7 red tours … beautiful clubs , performance up there with any other set of irons … I’ve got Cleveland wedges in the bag now aswell … great brand massively underrated
Nice… The sole looks big, but the back kind of reminds me of some older cavity backs designs. I mean, if it works then it works!!! Great review Mark! I’m all on board with the discussion around pricing for equipment. If golf is to be more accessible for more people then the entry point has to be reasonable for a larger potential customer base…which is why I play a Snell golf ball instead of a Pro V1. Personally, I’m a used club kind of guy and I think there are bargains to be had. That being said, the new club category is there for a reason and for someone new getting newly into it or someone who just wants some casual play I can see the investment worth it. Lower price points can’t be ignored by brands…which is why Costco has clubs now.
Just bought two new sets of the Cleveland UHX irons. Love them! Although I did give a set to my father and one set to my son. The UHX are awesome and the price new in the US was down to $400. In a couple years I'll buy these for that same $400. That's a deal!
I bought 3 sets of UHX. One for my wife, one for my son, and one for me. I also have the Srixon ZX7, combo with the ZX4. Each has different wedges starting at 49 Edison for me (similar V sole), 50 Cleveland for my wife, and Bettinardi for my son. We then have other wedges too. The bottom of the bag with the clubs strong creates some gapping challenges. Now we all go out together and can't blame the clubs!
Love Cleveland irons my CG16s lasted 10 years before i lost a few heads into the ponds, currently playing ping 430s but my 50,54,58 are all Cleveland as well as my HB mallet
I've been fitted several times in my life and know very well what my specs need to be for irons at least. I say that because I refuse to pay what the big brands are charging nowadays and instead go the direct to consumer route (knowing your specs and requirements helps a lot). I recently purchased a set from Takomo with as close to custom as I could get using my specs from previous fittings and absolutely LOVE my 101T irons. $650 delivered with my choice of specs is nearly impossible to beat. Bottom line is, you can get great clubs for a lot cheaper than what Callaway, TM, Titleist, etc. are charging.
I had a set of DTC irons, they were ok but after about a year of playing, they sounded like something internal was delaminating. I went back to Mizuno and won’t look elsewhere.
Thanks for this, Mark -- and for having a six iron as the longest iron in your bag (which, given your skill-level, clearly tells me that I have no business having anything lower-lofted in my own bag!) I wish Cleveland much success with these, if only for the principle of thing -- prices have gotten completely out of hand. (It's affecting the used-club market too.) To me, these Zipcore XLs remind me most of the Ping 430s; they go as long/longer, but it's hard to tell from the video, because you're a good ball striker, whether they have the same kind of shovel-like forgiveness as the usual G-series Ping iron. Do they?
It depends it’s person specific. I for the life of me cannot hit a hybrid but pure my 3 iron high. Mark is a much better player than me but his style doesn’t suit mine and that’s fine. I also play a 2 iron instead of a 3 wood at the minute because it’s like a bullet and my course is very windy.
Mark, swing it in the mid 70 mph range like people searching for extra distance will likely do. What’s the distance now and more importantly what’s the landing angle?
My wife bought me a set of Cleveland your action back in 2002, still in good use with the addition of a fancy putter and a gallaway driver. Happy days.
I have last year’s XL irons and CBX wedges. They are just drop it and whack it clubs. They’re not as pretty or as nice feeling as my old AP2s or blades, but given I don’t practice as much as I used to or swing as fast, they get the job done and I don’t really get the crazy distance issues I expected. I actually end up pin high more often than ever which as a 5 hcp is critical to shoot anywhere near my hcp.
here ya go, take a good set of clubs from 1985 and play a full 18 hole course, take a set from 1995 play that set , take a set from 2005 play those, and lastly a set from 2015, play the same course and what is YOUR SCORE.... IF you are around the same score give or take 2 to 3 strokes i would say thats great, for the average player what does it matter the set of clubs......will you take that challenge
Played Cleveland wedges for years and have also played some of their iron sets. Good quality and excellent for the price, I could easily game thease irons.
I currently game FG Tour irons from 2009. I always wanted something with a bit of help. Some of Wilson Staffs later irons in the same category had some tungsten weighing in the toe to stretch the forgiveness out a bit. I think the D9 Forged are the first club I've considered in this sortve category. My only concern is the rest of the bag on either end might need changed too if my distances create a gap at the bottom and a traffic jam at the top. Still nice to see companies making stuff like this
Great review Mark good brand nice looking clubs like the number and loft on sole. The price makes this the best value brand in golf as Wilson are starting to raise their prices. I think the woods are pretty good too.
I bought a set of Stix clubs that helped improve my game, look nice and perform well. The 14 set performance series. I’ve just started taking the game seriously though so they might not be for you.
Thanks Mark...they're reasonably nice looking for a Game Improvement club. They sort of remind me of the Srixon ZX4s. I'm guessing the lofts are similar. What's the stock shaft?
Looking at irons to replace my old s3 I got second hand to start playing golf I'm a high 20 handicap so this sort of thing sounds perfect as the "big brands" are too much money for me
I shot a 2 under par 70 using an old Cleveland Launcher iron set, off the rack. Totally destroyed my desire for the latest and the greatest along with the attendant pricing. Plus, no worry about someone stealing them from the bag drop.
Great review! I noticed that you had an awesome driver head cover that matched the 2023 open championship Srixon bag. Where can I get those head covers to match my bag
Modern equipment cost too much for minimal forgiveness because distance hasn’t really increased to justify the cost. Outside of DTC the next best option is the used market. My SLDR irons are so damn good evening this point in time. And it’s about P770 performance I believe
So, we golfers are getting less as far as the amount of irons, use to be 3-pw for $700 (name brand) now 4-pw or sometimes 5-pw (6/7 pcs) for $900? Doesn’t seem to be fair? And yes, golf equipment has been a rip off for quite some time.
A couple of years ago I got new clubs. I previously, in between, I had Tommy Armour 845’s. Loved them and 3 or 4 years ago my wife went with to get new clubs. I said at the time, I didn’t want expensive clubs. So I ended up with $1,300 Clubs. Now, I have had a stroke and out of the sport. I still say the 845 was a club just as good if not better than the expensive clubs. Exact words I used with my wife. I wanted 845s and ended up with $1300 clubs. I had a set when they first came out. I traded them for a newer set of 845s and they were no match for the originals. I learned if you get a set you can hit and enjoy the game new clubs may ruin the enjoyment. By the way Dick’s has owned the right to control 845s for the last several years and they have really screwed up the clubs.
Maltby clubs are as good or better than premium clubs for a fraction of the price. But people are concerned with having brand stamps on their clubs that will impress their friends.
100% true. Too many simply go for the latest TaylorMade or Callaway drivers because the "pros" use them. Those clubs the pros use are custom designed to their swing. I remember reading when Tiger went to the Nike driver - from his Titleist driver. The story was he gave Nike his TITLEIST driver and told them make the Nike driver EXACTLY like the Titleist driver - stick a Nike logo on the Titleist driver, he didn't care. In the end, the off-the-shelf Nike drivers people would flock to - because it was "Tiger Woods driver" - would be NOTHING like Tiger's Nike driver
Don't know if I have ever really seen a difference in drivers...well name brand anyways. Seems like they are all pretty comparable to me. Irons on the other hand I personally love Mizuno irons. Just something about them. Wedges though....all of mine except the ol vokey are Cleveland
The cost of irons is a strange one. I remember buying a set of Mizuno MP32 irons back in 2004 and they cost around £700 So with inflation that’s around £1200 give or take a few quid. So yes they are expensive for sure but are they really that much more than what we would expect?
I have made this point before and it is a very fair one. Inflation I guess is not the only metric people are measuring on. Cost of living has moved at a different pace but it is maybe unfair to blame the manufacturers for this. Great comment and thanks. 👍
It's not just golf that's expensive, it's all of life. I think it seems relatively expensive because they are luxury items for a hobby in an uncertain world
I’m looking to purchase a new set of irons. I bought some cobra f max (2017) last year. I like them but want some newer ones. Last year I would say was my 1st year playing. I’m still new. I’m torn between mizuno jpx 923 hot metals and these. Which would you choose for a beginner?
Big name clubs are expensive because many people are willing to buy them. And that's ok. I use a TaylorMade Burner from I think 2007 and I like it a lot. At this point I almost think it is better than the Stealth 2. If I ever buy brand new clubs they will be DTC.
The prices of clubs is ridiculous. I’m pretty comfortable financially and I would never spend the money they want on new clubs because it’s ridiculous. I bought my mom the Cleveland wedges for Christmas and they looked amazing and sounded amazing great wedges great price can’t imagine their full irons wouldn’t be great as well.
I buy last year's models. Replace irons every 10 years. Driver every 3-5 years. Lob wedge every 1.5 years as grooves wear. Others as needed. Just cannot replace 2008 Odyssey White Hot Pro Rossie.
these clubs are so good. theyre a prettier, slightly bigger version of the T300's basically. They feel so good. T300's fell so bad on a mishit and make a noise that makes people look on the range. worst sound ever. Having said that i game them and they are great. Like the look feel and sole design on these Zipcore XL's so they're getting in the bag immediately.
20 year personal iron progression-- Mizuno MP-32 to now Titleist T300. Should have never been playing blades. Seriously its comical when a low single digit am like myself thinks they need to work the ball. We work the ball inadvertently way more than intentionally. i need straight distance and height.
So as of five years ago I will never buy a new set of irons or anything other than wedges again. The prices are asinine as the clubs are built of unobtanium. You can buy a like new two year old set for less than half the price which is what I do. While most are on the G435 iam hitting G410s just as far and still scoring just as well. Driver for me is the 2017 Callaway Epic pre flash which I still feel is their best ever driver. My entire bag of sticks was under 800 to include wedges and putter. I'm done with the pretentious brand envy and about affordable results
I really don't understand why anyone would go to the retailer and get fleeced; if you got more money than you can count, I can understand the siren call to drop down a bag of loot. I have not spent over 350 for used irons, and 175 for a used driver. There are so many great deals on outstanding equipment; as long as you don't have to have the latest clubs on the inside cover of golf digest.
Large iron heads may be more forgiving, but I still prefer the more petite ones. The big, blocky ones are more problematic, hitting the ground first or simultaneous with the club. Lofts are too strong. Most game improvement clubs are.
i have cleveland cg16,s im doing work on,but the irons i play are lynxs black cat, lovely to play with and a fraction of the price of the big brands. They have been screwing people for yrs,my 3 wood and 5 wood are quality second hand nothing but some ink fill and polishing make good.people believe the hype.got to buy new its a swizz
Currently gaming some "put it down and whack it" cg16s....ive had countless sets of "better" irons but clevelands are just too easy to hit to not play them. However, these are way too expensive. Why would you pay 899 when you can get a used set of uhx irons for 299.
I do get fed up when every reviewer calls the very slow evolution of a product as technology! Your GC quad is technology. Also when the average golfers swing is 15 mph slower than yours the “evolution” becomes less impressive. I can use a set of 20 year old Progens equally as well as my Cobra Forged Tech irons.
I would suggest not replacing them then mate. Also what do you suppose they call the advances in the equipment then? Certainly a brilliant person like yourself could come up with a good word yeah?
I played TM burner for 10 years before I got fitted for cobra forged Tec. It made major improvements in my game. I can control ball flight and shape and heel/toe misses only loses about 5-7 yards. I think the issue is more about fitting than the iron itself.
@@footballjimbo79 You could just call it engineering. That’s what it literally is. Golf companies use the word “technology” to excess these days. It is getting a bit old.

How do these compare to the UHX irons?
Getting serious Srixon ZX4 vibes here! Not a bad thing
Cleveland CL or Wilson Dynapower???
The cost of irons is a strange one. I remember buying a set of Mizuno MP32 irons back in 2004 and they cost around £700
So with inflation that’s around £1200 give or take a few quid.
I think it seems relatively expensive because they are luxury items for a hobby in an uncertain world
I thought the uhx was a good iron, I’ll give these a try
Mark how did you find the back to front dispersion on these? On normal swings
Great review
Look so much like my Srixon z545s.
V sole very helpful.
How would you compare the launcher XL and the Zipcore XL ????????
I’m looking to purchase a new set of irons. I bought some cobra f max (2017) last year. I like them but want some newer ones. Last year I would say was my 1st year playing. I’m still new. I’m torn between mizuno jpx 923 hot metals and these. Which would you choose for a beginner?
What u get? The same choice I want
GreatvidepMark. .a brand of quality that's often overlooked. ⛳️⛳️
Big name clubs are expensive because many people are willing to buy them. And that's ok. I use a TaylorMade Burner from I think 2007 and I like it a lot. At this point I almost think it is better than the Stealth 2. If I ever buy brand new clubs they will be DTC.
Great video, the problem with power bats seems to be with the pw, gw, sw
Going to far
Wedge gapping sucks
Good point
Please compare to Ping G430 which are similar in price.
Prices have gotten out of hand. I don't replace clubs as often as I did say 5 years ago, and look more to buying prior years' models.
I buy last year's models. Replace irons every 10 years. Driver every 3-5 years. Lob wedge every 1.5 years as grooves wear. Others as needed. Just cannot replace 2008 Odyssey White Hot Pro Rossie.
On Foresight, can that grass blades explosion graphic be turned off?
175 yd 8 iron is crazy. How many wedges would you have to carry. 5 or 6
Mark can you test the Cobra Dark Speed irons? Please and thank you
Stopped playing these type of irons with the TM 09 Burners. Got tired of flushing them and flying greens by 15 yards.
Did Cleveland remove the loft on the soles of the irons?
Its a srixon zx4 really but cheaper looks nice
I always think I should be gaming irons like these but the lofts scare me always wonder if I have enough speed to launch these types of irons...
these clubs are so good. theyre a prettier, slightly bigger version of the T300's basically.
Yes Tour Action
I really don't understand why anyone would go to the retailer and get fleeced; if you got more money than you can count, I can understand the siren call to drop down a bag of loot. I have not spent over 350 for used irons, and 175 for a used driver. There are so many great deals on outstanding equipment; as long as you don't have to have the latest clubs on the inside cover of golf digest.
Remind me of the 'oversize' irons from the 90s
Are these irons are the Ripcore, or the Zipcore?
Large iron heads may be more forgiving, but I still prefer the more petite ones. The big, blocky ones are more problematic, hitting the ground first or simultaneous with the club. Lofts are too strong. Most game improvement clubs are.
i have cleveland cg16,s im doing work on,but the irons i play are lynxs black cat, lovely to play with and a fraction of the price of the big brands. They have been screwing people for yrs,my 3 wood and 5 wood are quality second hand nothing but some ink fill and polishing make good.people believe the hype.got to buy new its a swizz
Was that a 33 Degree 8 iron??? holy moly
Dana Carvey!! ❤️❤️❤️
Am I the only person wondering what a bomber is? And what does “dial in distance” actually mean?
Currently gaming some "put it down and whack it" cg16s....ive had countless sets of "better" irons but clevelands are just too easy to hit to not play them. However, these are way too expensive. Why would you pay 899 when you can get a used set of uhx irons for 299.
When a club make you giggle - must be the one!
If the irons are like their wedges then they’re going to be good.
I just reshafted my Mizuno MP4s with dynamic gold shafts spined and there's no iron on this Earth that hits more solid or better
