I recently bought a set of Cobra T-rails for the wife (who refuses to practice and get any better or faster). Of course I had to try them out myself when they showed up. I have to describe the feeling of first hitting them as very similar to the first time I sat on a bidet - utterly delightful! So much fun to hit.

I've been interested in these clubs since the HB Turbo's and I keep checking for a used set on ebay just to have around for fun but because they've held their value so well I still haven't been able to get a set. Kudos to Cleveland for being unapologetic in their quest to give golf what it needs rather than just what sells.

I love them, purchased my set last year. In my youth I was a 4.5 hdc, now play to 10 or 12. The divots are a just beyond, you can get real steep and still have a shallow divot. I lost maybe 1/2 club in length but am 100% hitting the ball solid, you can still move the ball but not as much regular clubs. They are just easy to hit and I wish I had made the change years ago. I'm 62 with some health issues so everything helps but I can still shoot in the 70s low 80s as a weekend golfer.

Hi, can i ask, do they make it harder to hit the ball well out of the rough (as the bigger head has more grass to force itself through)?

  • @johnp1040
    @johnp1040 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

I agree. Many golfers, even senior golfers, play to their ego. They refuse to move up a tee box or game a max game improvement iron. I started playing the Cleveland HBs when they first cameout, maybe 12-13 years ago, updated about 6 years ago to Launcher HB, senior flex and still game them today. These are the same concept, maybe more tech. In my late 60s and not getting any longer
but still can enjoy the game with help.

    • @pirtatejoe
      @pirtatejoe 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree. I play with a lot of seniors and these really should be standard for most with that swing speed. I wouldn't care one bit about using clubs like these. My biggest problem is that I'm 6'3" and have good swing speed. The lofts being so strong on the clubs like these just makes the majority of the set pretty useless on most courses. I would seriously consider it if they offered a style of clubs like these with an option for lofts that didn't mean hitting an 8 iron over 200 yards.

I’m a disabled golfer and have been using senior flex clubs… I’m ok with the 4 and will have that as my driving iron…I just couldn’t get on with the feel. (Launcher hb) And at my slow speed I really get similar distances with forged irons. I just get such a better flight with irons. It could very well be the shafts. Off rack.

Hi Mark, I shoot low 90s, only broke 90 last season as I'm new to the sport in the last couple of years. I swallowed my pride and added a 28 degree PXG hybrid to my bag. Although I didn't have to swallow for long when I started routinely sticking greens from 175 yards, where I couldn't do it b4 except by law of averages, lol. Totally changed my game. And I was getting compliments from my playing buddies on the shots. My next club is a 7i and I'm deadly with that at 150 yards. The high lofted hybrid changed my game and it looks great too. I'm putting a 31 degree into the rotation for this season if I feel like a low stress round or for a super early tee time when I'm rigid. Doing all this to take stress off longer approach shots in order to preserve my mental reserves for the short game this season, which is where I really need improvement in my scoring. I always have the option of swapping one of my set irons back in for any of the higher-lofted hybrids if I feel like it, so I've got max flexibility there. I am also ditching the fairway woods and going from driver to 19 or 22 degree hybrid as the next club in the bag, removing one more variable from my game (I'm way deadlier off the deck with a hybrid vs a fairway which I only hit well off a tee). Anyway, hoping to just really focus on 100 yards and in this season and drop strokes, my ego be damned! And I'm having a lot more fun with the higher lofted hybrid setup, all smiles after hitting them, no shanks! I'm sticking with this club strategy until I break 80 and until I have more time to practice the longer irons. In the meantime, I won't miss the stress on the course. Great review, glad you raised the idea to the masses.

I bought a set of these irons this year. I’m an early 50’s 14 handicap who hits the ball a long way, but seldom where I want to…previously. I decided that function is more important than form, so pulled the trigger buying these. What a difference. My handicap has dropped to an 8 and I’m having way more fun. Everyone who I play with, who have given my clubs a try have been wowed by how good they feel and how easy they are to hit. I can still hit high draws and low stingers when I need, so the notion that game improvement clubs can’t be cheaper is not applicable to me.

Great video, Mark. It is a design that I also believe, should be used by many more players.
As a PGA Teaching Professional myself, I’ve fitted many players with this design (Wilson Launchpad) and they have improved their scores markedly.
Another advantage is, how easy it is to chip with them. Especially 8, 9 and PW.

  • @peterpallotta2828
    @peterpallotta2828 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Always good content, Mark. And you're not wrong to suggest that an iron's functionality/performance should be our main criteria in buying a set of clubs; shooting our lowest scores is, after all, the object of the game. And yet, for some of us -- like me, who took up the game later in life -- if shooting lower scores was the only/primary goal of playing golf, I think the game would've proved too frustrating a long time ago, turning it from a most enjoyable hobby into a stressful slog. I am still trying to get better, and I still always carry my card-and-pencil and keep score, but I also seek out other forms of pleasure from golf, e.g., the prettiness and history and 'symmetry' of old Hogan Apex blades, 2-PW, in a pencil bag, and the thrill-and-great-feeling of sometimes hitting a forged iron right in the sweet post and watching it fly just as imagined, and the challenge of sweeping a 3-wood off the turf well enough to clear the pond up by the green and give me a very rare chance at eagle. So, while those Srixon zx4s that you play seem absolutely ideal (and I'd love to have a set, starting as you do with the 6 iron), the Cleveland Halo XLs are a bridge too far! They might turn an 88 into an 85, but that's simply not worth it to me.

I’m a little confused why so many are talking negative about these game changing irons . Normally very good golfers harping on about aesthetics. Let’s face it , mid -high handicap golfers want improvements, I’m not concerned regards looks . These new style hybrid irons can only be a positive.

I've admitted defeat and parked my ego! 😮
Since returning to golf last summer after about a 5yr break and found out I just couldn't hit my custom fitted Titleist AP2's like I used to, I'd lost distance and became "directionally challenged"...
So I bit the bullet and picked up a set of the previous generation Launcher XL Halos (from 4-pw) with horror of horror .. graphite shafts from one of the online shops the winter sales..
I seriously couldn't be happier with them, Obviously my playing partners took the proverbial for a few holes when I turned up with them on the first of their debut, then there was a massive silence as I was finding fairways with the 4 "iron" and hitting greens and dropping the ball to a stop on approaches and par 3's!
I've now bought the matching Smartsole 4 50° gap, 58° sand wedges and chipper since then.
Can't wait to see how they perform in the warmer weather now.

Regret it from the stand point of my strike still sucks so in turn I'm still looking for a close to 100 much less being able to break 100. Surely I understand these will not fix my swing but maybe would help getting height and length with irons. All that being said THANK YOU for showing us a genuine honest review.

I have not got these clubs but recently bought a second hand set of Cleveland HB Turbo irons 6-PW. Graphite senior shafts. Cost me £140. I thought my take might be useful to mid-high handicappers out there. Background, over the last ten years as an occasional golfer (Maybe 15-20 rounds a year), my handicap has varied between 14-24. During that time I was playing with Wilson pro staff graphite, regular shaft and then Caley steel shaft. I have a dodgy back due to many years playing in the front row. So, the middle section of my back doesn't do much and consequently my swing is restricted. I'm 59, but suspect my back is what you might call more senior. My back is about as flexible as a lead pipe. As a guide, a six iron used to go about 150 yards but over the last few years this has reduced so that my 6 iron was more like 135 to 140. I took some lessons and the feedback was that due to my restricted swing I was doing about as good as I could. Frustrating. So, having looked at various videos about hybrid sets, including this very useful one, I thought I would try the Cleveland Hybrid Turbo irons out. I got the graphite senior shafts. Just got back from the range. BIG improvement as follows: 6 iron now goes 165 as opposed to about 140. In terms of forgiveness, improvement. I was hitting them off the toe and the heel, but the variance was I would say about 10 yards width ways although of course some sacrifice on distance. In other words, if I hit the 6 iron well, it was accurate and going about 165, with a restricted swing. If I hit it badly, it was going about 150 with a 10 yard width variance. Good enough for me and that's with my first brief hit. I did consider the ego perspective of playing with hybrids. My conclusion, I'm not going to turn pro anytime soon. I play golf to have a nice relaxing round away from the other stresses of life. I think these hybrid irons are going to achieve that much more than if I continued with the Caley steel shaft irons. So, if like me, you are getting on a bit but want to hit accurately with reasonable distance, I would recommend. Put the ego aside. Actually at address, they don't look too much different until you get to the 6 iron and below. And even if they don't, so what? Most of my golfing pals use hybrids below 6 iron anyway. Hope this helps. Happy golf

Cleveland have been releasing irons in this style since 2008, and I can't imagine why more golfers don't use them. The first two playing partners I came across who used them (around 2010) both said the only problem they had was getting used to hitting the ball 1/2 club farther than they had been hitting it. I bought a set of the Cleveland Altitude Irons (released in the 2000-teens) 7 years ago for an old senior friend as a parting gift, when I retired and moved south for year-round golf.

While older in nature of manufacture, I game a set of Cobra Transition S hybrids and I also game a set of Cleveland HiBore hybrids I custom built. You are correct it is an ego thing, I had to realize that for me I was older, had come out of some severe health issues and I wasn’t the golfer I used to be in the past. I would definitely game these clubs. Last year I switched to a set of of Taylormade Burner Plus irons and suffered all year in accuracy and distance. Will probably be switching back to my Cleveland HiBores which are fit to me. The down side on these for me would be price! Great video!

I'm an older guy I drive the ball pretty well but that second shot....oy! just awful. A few weeks ago i told my playing buddy I think it's time to go to hybrid irons...so I knew about the XL halos so I'm looking on Clevelands website and there is a demo day about 40 minutes away so I signed up. I talked with the Cleveland rep, and i start hitting the Halo XL PW. I like it, shots are going up straight...he takes it back changes the shaft to a senior then hands me the 7. After a few swings he changes heads (Lie) and all shots went up into the air. Really nice feeling. I ordered them, I am trying them tomorrow. Had them on the range on Wednesday. Really like them. I just took the pitching wedge and some balls behind my place and practiced some chips. Feel super easy to chip with the PW. I'll let everyone know tomorrow.

    Wave Transmission at Impact
When the clubhead strikes the ball, some energy is reflected back into the shaft while some is transmitted to the ball:
The relative impedance of the clubhead and ball affects energy transfer
A stiffer shaft may transmit energy more efficiently
However, the extremely brief impact duration (less than 1 millisecond) limits the shaft's influence
While shaft flex waves are a complex phenomenon, their practical impact on performance is still debated. For most golfers, proper shaft fitting based on swing speed, tempo, and feel is more important than the nuanced physics of wave propagation.

Thanks Mark once more for your no-nonsense approach. A full set sounds too much to me, I always think these models will not give you enough feedback on your hits to adjust the next. But your consistency in 'are you allowing yourself the help you really need?' storytelling did make me get a 5-hybrid and the famous Crossy wedge, two of the best gear decisions I ever made. I was wondering, is there a maximum weight to clubheads in regulations? These Halo's appear to be heavy(ish) to my eye.

I have had my Cleveland hibore turbos for years, they are brilliant, im 60 and official handicap is 5. Any amateur not playing the most forgiving clubs is costing themselves several shots every round. My 4 iron with the roll and bowl is a weapon. I have 4 iron through dual wedge everyclub is easy to hit

I play some Taylormade Gloire max game improvement irons and have a 9 handicap. They are easy to hit, straight and long. They allow me to hit all the shots I want to and give me all the help I need. Don’t be afraid to hit larger irons people! They make golf fun!

I play off 12 and use the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo irons.
Unless you're a seriously good player who is looking to be able move your irons either way, then use a hybrid iron set.
If you don't you're putting your ego before your score.

I have been intrigued by this type of Cleveland irons ever since the first generation came out and I had the opportunity to try them and really liked them, even the looks. Problem is that were I live (Central Europe), it is next to impossible to get them with anything other than senior flex graphite shafts, and my swing speed is still a little too fast for those. I hit them very high and short, which is not a good thing on the very windy courses in my area.

They just remind me of the 1996 Callaway Big Bertha irons that were so poplar ,( I actually just sold my original set to a kid at the golf course I work at and he loves them ) The top line is thick and with fat soles and easy to hit .
I actually took them out just before I sold them and played very well with them !

I'll be honest, the only thing iffy thing about these new ones are the low spin numbers. I play the previous Halo's and my 8i goes closer to a reading of 6800-7200 when I did my only ever gap test. I like some spin, its my friend.

I currenty have the same Cleveland irons I boight back in the 80's. My irons are Cleveland VAS Offset Irons. I remember one guy told me they look like garden tools. But I loved them then and still love them now. I have had my VAS Irons for im thinking 40 years now, (or more). I know I bought them the first year they hit the market. They have seen alot of golf.
By the way, I'm 69 now, a Senior Golfer.
But my long Irons have not been my go to's. I feel very confident with my tight lies 3 , 5 and 7 fairway woods. I have been thinking of a change in my bag, removing my long Irons in favor of some more fairway woods to replace my 3,4,5. Something like fairway woods 9, 11, and 13. After seeing these new Cleveland "Fat Boys", I wondering if these might fit the bill. I am going to try them as I like there design.
One thing I do know is Cleveland , in my opinion, make a great set of irons and always seems to push the envelope beyond triditional blade irons. You just won't know a Cleveland until you swing one.

I have a set of these, they rock! I tried several other expensive set of player's irons and got tired of only hitting 1/5 good shots. It is now 4/5 with the Clevelands. Most people don't even look at your clubs, and I rarely do either. I've played entire rounds with a stranger on the same cart, and couldn't tell you after what brand of irons they had. IMO it's far more embarrassing to have a $1200+ set of beautiful players irons and suck ass with them, than to have these in the bag and hit good shots. The score card doesn't know what club you used, and who cares what some weekend hack struggling to break 90 thinks... Now, if you have these and still suck, then sure, might as well carry some that are prettier so you can pose with them. ;)

I've recently started golfing again after a dozen rounds total in the past 30 years, and zero the last 6. Being a researcher by nature, I dipped into YT and reviews pretty hard before buying a set. I ended up with the reiteration of these from 2 years ago. I got a good deal on all 9 clubs (3 wedges, 4-9i). Most of that was based on your reviews and explanation, which were spot on. I had no idea where I'd be with my swing, or what kind of slice/hook/etc. I would have. Having these in the bag took away a lot of that worry, and they proved to be very helpful. I figured I would game them until I got back in the swing of things (pun intended), then switch to blades again after my confidence could be restored. I took 10-15% off what my distance would've been back in the day, and just swung freely. It was fairly accurate, and I could feel the forgiveness with toes and such. The only downfall is distance that is lost by loft. I used to be a high hitter with my irons (normal blades). These go even higher, and so much so that the wind played havoc with them on some of my shots. All in all it was a good first round of 100 off the backs, stroke play, and no mulligans. I see no reason to not have these in the bag permanently. Thanks again for this good video, as well as the previous reviews.

I returned to golf after a 35 year break, after a few months, I found the Cleveland Launcher irons. I bought a set and my handicap came down 5 shots that summer.
The next season, I got a deal on the new Launcher Halo XL and dropped another 5 shots. So easy to hit, so forgiving off a range of lies, long enough to compete with equivalent players. A great investment. Golf is hard. Why make it harder just to assuage your ego? Your ego does fine when you start winning a few competitions.

I tried these during an iron fitting and they are good on the launch monitor. I found but they “feel” heavy for me, if that’s overall weight or swing weight I’m not sure but didn’t overly like that.
It’s funny you spoke of blending with a players wedge, I actually have smart sole wedges and wouldn’t trade them out, absolutely love them. They are really encouraging to engage that sole and the higher and softer landing chip shots are a breeze now.
I ended up with Cobra 5 & 6 hybrids, then 6-PW Cleveland launcher XL and smart sole wedges and chipper. I would say the best bag I’ve ever played with, really happy with all clubs.

I’d play these as a 12 HCP and all in for forgiveness and disregard looks IF.. there’s reduced offset (as my bad shot is a hook), AND I’m able to keep my distance gaps at 86mph 7 iron swing speed of 170 yards. So absolutely keep the forgiveness but not at the expense of hook and power lofts

@@user-lq6os6bd5b I can feel if I hit more on the toe, heel, high or low on the face. That was much harder to discern with these clubs. I am a 10 handicap but getting older. Was just hoping to see if they were easier to hit, and they definitely were, but without the feel I can drift off center strike and not be aware enough to adjust. I realize for a higher handicap it might not matter and they don’t know their swing well enough and just want forgiveness. In that case, these are perfect.

    Just continues new club designs.
Clearly the thing about a set of golf clubs are clubs of varied lofts.
    From driver to putter.
Probably can make sets that are all generally one length , have same swing, and have clubs with have lifts that maybe are 5-6 degree or more difference. Probably would bring the number of clubs in an average set down to 10, including a “driver” and “putter”. Weird, but could be the future trend.
