Metal Evolution: Albums is the next level of Banger’s famous Metal History Family Tree, delving deep into the most influential metal albums ever made. In 1995, Swedish Death Metal band At the Gates released what many metal diehards recognized as a perfect record, SLAUGHTER OF THE SOUL. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this landmark recording, Sam Dunn travels to Gothenburg to interview the band.

At the Gates- Slaughter of the Soul
    In Flames- The Jester Race
    Dark Tranquility- The Gallery
    Opeth- Orchid
Dissection- Storm of the Lights Bane
    Death- Symbolic
    Many, many more..
Some of the best records came out around the 1995 era without a doubt it was the melodic movement in Sweden

Edge of Sanity - Crimson or Purgatory Afterglow, highly underrated band and albums. Dan Swano alone has huge influence on swedish death metal scene.

carcass - heartwork and most importantly, sentenced - north from here which i consider to be the first melodic death metal (or at least proto melodeath) album to ever exist

Sam, you're among the metal gods for me. Your work for this music may be different than what Chuck Schuldiner or Rob Halford did, but it's insanely important. Keep going, you're making amazing stuff, and you're being an example for everyone.

This was fun to watch. I was there at Wacken when they reunited. I will never forget the feeling of all the hair on my body standing straight up when what felt like the entire festival of 70 000 people were in on that first "GO!" as they opened with Slaughter of the Soul. Iron Maiden played the same festival, but they were absolutely blown out of the water by At the Gates. I remember how Tompa could barely speak because he was overwhelmed by emotion as he stuttered out a weak "thanks for remembering guys". Really great to see all that hard work the band put into making the album come back and reward them even though it was much much later.

Sam, it is a pleasure to view the products you have made. Up until today, I became aware that you had produced much more after the Headbanger's Journey. I watched the Extreme Metal documentary and I am glad I did. Then I came across this video on At the Gates, and all I can say is that I really enjoy the tone you set to it, the smart questions you ask which really make evident how an authentic interest you have in the music; others might do it to show off only. Congratulations!

I'm a sucker for music documentaries. This is no exception. Learning more about the band and getting into their music. That's for me. \m/ ^^

much as I love that album, let's spark some controversy.... the Sound of Perseverance. Almost more Progressive Blackened thrash than Death Metal by that point... which IMO is part of the fascination I have with it.

@16:11 Oh hey, it's Mille Petrozza. Speaking of him, his later vocals on like Phantom Antichrist are very similar to Tompa's vocals on Slaughter of the soul.

I saw them in Chicago when they reunited, the Circle Pit started before At the Gates even took the stage, seeing that Reunion show was one of the best shows I’ve been too
