Nu Metal was my "gateway drug" into the metal world. And metal became my lifestyle. So despite all the trash talk you hear towards Nu Metal nowaday it always has that special place for me. It never gets old; I always find my way back to it. I listen to deathcore, death metal, hardcore punk, thrash, all the stuff you may call "real metal" or "real heavy music" but that "Y2K era stuff that had rappers in it and was glazed over completely by the mainstream" is still prominent in my music library.

@gazeunderthesunmusic. I mean there is no doubt that Hardcore/Post Hardcore bands influenced Deftones.
But I think the Hardcore/Post Hardcore like bands that would influence Nu-Metal were the Metal or Hip Hop influenced bands like Helmet, Quicksand, Life Of Agony, Biohazard, Orange 9mm, Downset, and Suicidal Tendencies.
Like I wouldn’t call those bands as Hardcore/Post Hardcore as such because they are more Metal influenced than straight up just Hardcore/Post Hardcore bands.
Biohazard fit the style of Groove Metal, just with a NYHC backbone to them, Biohazard are one part Pantera and another part Beastie Boys.
Orange 9mm and Downset were influenced by Hip Hop as well that they could easily fit in with the early Rap Metal acts of Rage Against The Machine, Stuck Mojo, Clawfinger etc etc.
Helmet, Life Of Agony, and Quicksand fit the style of Alternative Metal, just with a Hardcore/Post Hardcore backbone. I mean some of Quicksand’s riffs could be mistaken for Tool riffs.
And then Suicidal Tendencies were a Crossover Thrash band, just as influenced in Thrash Metal as they were Punk/Hardcore.
To me straight up Hardcore/Post Hardcore is Stuff like Black Flag, Fugazi, Minor Threat, Rites Of Spring, Husker Du, those bands were just a more aggressive versions of Punk and Post Punk. Most people that like Punk/Post Punk and Hardcore/Post Hardcore are much less likely to get into others genres like Hip Hop, Electronic music, Funk, and more boy racer/Chad/Gymhead like bands.
To me those bands like Fugazi, Rites Of Spring and Husker Du would influence more with the fucking Emo/Screamo stuff of AFI, The Used, Thursday, Escape The Fate and all that fucking atrocious dogshit. Because those bands like Fugazi, Rites Of Spring and Husker Du were appealing to the geeky and goth like audience.
The NYHC scene I think would’ve influenced Nu-Metal more as bands like Agnosric Front and Madball were seen as more Metal influenced and Chad/Meathead/Gymhead like, wearing Basketball jerseys and bandanas that even some Urban, Hispanic or Black kids could get into, and the NYHC scene were more welcoming to genres like Hip Hop, that’s why bands like Orange 9mm, Downset and Biohazard were doing crossover Hip Hop stuff

I remember right before Korn became big, a friend of mine was telling me about them. One of his friends worked at the college radio station and was freaking out about them. My friend kept talking about them and saying "Korn is going to change the world of metal!" I laughed at him because Korn sounded kind of cheesy. I'd ask him when was Broccoli going to release an album. He finally convinced me to listen to them and I was blown away. I wasn't impressed with the bass into to Blind but when the guitars kicked in, then I was hooked. The whole first album was awesome. I saw them as a continuation in my journey of metal. When I heard Limp Bizkit, I wanted to throw up.

As a fan of rap and hiphop I tend to like more bass heavy music. Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill and Limp Bizkit got me intrested in Nu-Metal. Wich led to Korn and Coal Chamber. Wich eventually led to an intrest in rock and heavy metal. 80s rock still sucks tho'. It's early Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and then jump to metallica and onwards

Nu metal bands can be divided into three main categories: heavy metal nu metal bands: that is, heavy metal bands that have these special whispering and growling vocals style and experimental riff sounds, like Korn, Slipknot, Chimaira, Mudvayne, Disturbed, Coal Chamber; the alternative rock nu metal bands; that have evolved basically from alternative bands that played something heavier than rock but softer than metal, heavily influenced by MJK and Mike Patton, that is Deftones, Chevelle, Incubus, Lostprophets, and the Rap Nu Metal bands, which basically rapped: Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach and POD at the beginning. What makes it difficult to classify nu metal as heavy metal is that Deftones, one of its main influences, have a very alternative sound which started basically as the Post Hardcore of Fugazi or Quicksand with some reggae, progressive, hip hop, shoegazing influences, so basically they were not doing metal at all. The bands didn’t call it nu metal, it was the media. For me It’s just a name, but it’s not an absolute heavy metal genre.

I’m 46yrs of age & total props to my fellow Canadian cohort Sam Dunn for creating this amazing biography show on the history of metal music 🤘 I’m a huge “Type O Negative” & “Carnivore” fan in which lead singer/bassist Peter Steele created. “Carnivore” was hard core thrash metal that were way ahead of their generation imo because the lyrics for “Carnivore” were ahead of their time with songs such as “God Is Dead” - “Sex & Violence” - “World Wars 3&4” - Self titled song “Carnivore”. All those songs i mentioned such as “World Wars 3&4” sang about terrorist attacks & evil leaders of other countries trying to take over the world like what “Hitler” was trying to do etc. Peter Steele was an extremely talented musician on so many levels & the songs that Pete created for “Type O Negative” were quite long songs so radio airplay was out of the question but that didn’t stop them in the least. I’ve always thought of “Type O Negative” as the modern day “Black Sabbath” imo 🤘

There's a new 3 part documentary on Woodstock '99 on Netflix called "Trainwreck: Woodstock '99." It plainly shows that, while Fred Durst didn't exactly help the situation, he and Limp Bizkit are NOT to blame. It's so easy and convenient to point the finger at Fred and LB. But the truth is, the organizers didn't organize jack shit. They didn't arrange to have the toilets cleaned, security was a fucking joke and a half, and the vendors were over charging for food and water. It was an absolute shit show. Even if Limp Bizkit hadn't performed there, all that shit still would've happened. You treat people like animals, they're gonna act like animals. Although, animals get treated MUCH better than the patrons of Woodstock '99!

I saw a documentary on the festival and LB's music and Fred Durst's character may have been incendiary, but it was the festival organizers' fault. People were frustrated by how much of a cash grab everything about the festival was, how inaccessible water and refreshments were when it was stupid hot, and there were inadequate toilets and over-crowding. Everything about the organization of the festival was inadequate and issues were not addressed. People were pissed and then LB came on and told them to break stuff...

      2) Plenty of other non shitty bands did that too. Most of the people who like Nu-Metal didn't move on to the Iron Maidens or Priest, they "outgrew" it. So also not an argument.

Nu-metal to emo.
