I’ve seen liner and compression locks fail… so yeah they can!

Rocked an xhp code 4 daily 13 months. Went to spyderco para 3 s110v burple. Bought titanium deep carry clips for both. The spydy is a nice toy. No comparison for real work.

Now that’s a knife I love. Miss mine. Hoping to get the all black version eventually

As someone mentioned in the comments, I also dislike Benchmade, I love S35VN and am the leader of the Chris Reeve fanboy club and I love back locks but all of the preference differences aside, the Code 4 has always been a favorite of mine - it’s just a really good knife!

I dig their Tantos too, I went for a Recon 1 for the G10 scales. Work knife for me, I've got 20 others I can fidget with. Nice review.

The Code 4 is certainly an excellent piece for the money, but I get your point. For example Kizer is putting some really nice things out there, also Civivi and other companies like Vosteed are making solid models that are more fidget-friendly, and come with nice button or cross bar locks. Nice vid.

Thanks for sharing mate! Great video. I had and still have the exact same issue with it as you have. I wanted this knife for so long, (10 years) but that backlock always held me back. Carry a Para2 as an Edc and love the ease of use. But here I am, yet again, looking at the code 4 tanto.
The looks are so awesome. And just like you I grew up with a love for cold steel. Have many of their weird and insane products....even both the counter tacs , both the Double agents and Oss double edged (which by the way is super illegal in my country) So I never can carry or use them since I live in a city....so one would assume I would have bought the code 4 by now already....
But that backlock is killing it. Not a budget thing, purely a backlock thing.
I did try it out in a store a couple of years ago, and like a noob cut my finger with it while trying to close it up...that thing was so damn sharp....super light touch but a super deep cut.
    I truly like it...
But then also when closed there is this opening in the blade....it feels a bit like a bad design yet somehow awesome overall design. Also the slimmness is just awesome.
Awell....probably pass it up and watch another code 4 video in a year or 2..
The wheels of the bus go round and round...
Thanks again for your video and apologies for my little bookwork.

One test I’ll do with any locking knife, get a good grip and just squeeze as tight as I can. While I’m squeezing I’ll jiggle the blade. Liner locks are among the only ones that will unlock with a solid squeeze of the hand. Not all but most. Some back locks have unlocked enough to close during my test. I won’t carry a knife for self preservation unless it passes that test. I’ve never had a triad lock fail my test, no matter how hard I squeeze, the lock doesn’t move enough to let the blade close.

    • @wookerton

I will not carry and put a liner lock in a defensive role. A liner lock will always be a secondary blade if I carry one.

That’s hilarious about your dislike for S35VN! I’m the same way with Benchmade. I’ve yet to own one, and I think it’s mainly because when I first started carrying knives, everyone screamed from the rooftops about how great they were. I hate jumping on the bandwagon for anything. I much prefer to go my own way, especially when the fans of the other option are so opinionated about their idolized brand/thing.

While I agree with your stance on back locks, for reasons I cannot explain the triad lock gets a free pass from me. I’ve tried them in multiple makers and spine locations and I am always immediately turned off. Yet somehow when it’s in a beast like the AD10 or 4Max Scout I don’t mind it at all (I actually didn’t mind it in my Finn Wolf either come to think of it).. currently researching the clip point code 4 as my Xmas gift this year 😇

I’ve been wanting to get this one as a straight up user for a long while that way I can just buy vanity/fidget knives. 😆 I hear this would be the one to go to for that.

I have not handled this one. I am like you with the back lock not being my favorite. I think is a good knife but I have to have a little fidget factor and they don't do it for me either.

You need to tune it ! I take a few pounds off the lock bar spring ! The code 4 is very light , isn't it 3 or 4 oz? But I just bought the code 4 tanto clone 80% discount off $25.00 !!
Recon 1s I totally customize ( I can hardly stand to hold a new recon 1 ) ! If you had one of my custom recon 1s you would never want to leave home without one !
The only other lock I like on larger folding knives is the axis bar lock , I have liner or frame locks but I don't like them they hold just long enough to get you hurt very bedly ( sabenza 34lbs to pop it )!

    • @craigcarroll6161

So how did you weaken your spring? Did you grind it or bend it of something else?

  • @Apex_grind562

The review is invalid. As a reviewer you came in saying " I hate backlocks". It's like reviewing steak and being vegetarian. Second, you weren't sure if Ti or aluminum. So , your review was determined prior to the review. I felt you should consider not doing reviews on "bias". Cpm s35vn , is for "crk fanboys". I love hearing reviews but please don't waste our time. Really, you have me a review of something you already know you disliked. This is like opinionated journalism with out fact. Fidget factor??? Maybe spinners my friend. God bless.

Every lock has failed on me at one point or another except a Triad Lock. Especially the Axis Locks. However, if you’re just using your knife to cut boxes or rope or paper, then yeah, they should be fine. But as an avid hunter, bushcrafter, camper, etc, the only folding knife I’m carrying is a Triad. The rest are too flimsy for anything other than office work.

@@beardedgear I have the same problem with my Recon 1! If you move it faster or shake it, it makes rattle noise! That's because of the thick lube they put inside the pins and the other things inside. And if that stuff is gone, it makes this sound! And the Tri-ad lock bar and the other part itself is from aluminum. Greetings from Austria!

Real knife people luv lock back folders and IMHO much of the rest is junk
    except the Compression Lock
the new Deadbolt Lock and a few. Frame Lock knives. My preference is a fixed blade but no knife enthusiasts can go without a EDC folder and the Code 4 is one I would add in a New York Minute to may knife stash if I had the cash.

Tri Ad Lock lock back or back lock. But you don't give a who because you don't like them and that's your rite. You must have had a sad childhood in you back yard or yard back. LOL !!
