I implore whoever is editing these: When they're pointing out specific details or, say, taking the armor off the mannequin to look at it, SHOW THAT DETAIL, or SHOW HIM TAKING IT OFF THE MANNEQUIN. Or hey, maybe when Adam says "Tell me about this beautiful piece", cut to him before he says that! You can save the long slow panning for when they're talking about general things.
Seconded. I was so impatient to be able to SEE when Adam was audibly lifting the chest piece and encountering the electronics. Even if it "looks awkward" or something, that's precisely what needs to be shown in that moment!
It's always fun to see someone exuberant on a topic, today's edition is Adam geeking out on props worthy of adoration. Thanks for bringing us this content Adam!
I was thoroughly enjoying this video, as I do with most Tested / Prop videos, when all of a sudden my worlds collided. The David Mack illustration is the artwork I animated for the Winter Soldier title sequence. I'm literally the person they referred to that animated that exact shot and sequence in the film's Main on End titles. It's a wild, sometimes small world that we live in.
The Starlord pistol you're holding, as with all of them for the first movie, was made in-house by the Action Props department under propmaster Barry Gibbs. Action Props supervisor was Toby Shears....and principle Starlord pistols maker was James Woodcock - aided by Oskars Pantilievs and Marc Trunk. All work was by hand...with no 3D printing. The heat blooming was airbrushed by painter Philippa Ashcroft,....who also laid the carbon fibre hydrographics on the grips. The pistols' look was designed by Chris Rosewarne.
Thanks for adding the edit, and posting this info in general. Always nice to be able to pin down precise credit. And my compliments on your work (the art dept. work on Napoleon was beautiful).
@@Thomas_Essonwe put a real shift in for GotG. A tough gig but we got to make such cool stuff. Thankyou for the Napoleon praise - again, we got to make some beautiful things 🙏🏽
The claws sell pretty well even when wearing white cotton gloves. Very simple design but looks great and also looks easy to wield for the actor. I could have seen them going with a glove/gauntlet to hide more supporting structure but that design looks awesome coming out of a bare knuckle.
I’m gonna mention this about the burnt metal technique here in case Adam sees this. The reason this heat treatment on Star Lords gun looks so good in comparison to your Mandalorian rifle is because the gradient is not a consistent transition. You need a hard line between the blue and pink before it fades out. It’s also more irregular. I think of it as the heat consuming or eating away at the metal like a caterpillar. There should be large bites scooped out. Your Mandalorian rifle looked SO good though. Just thought I’d point that out because it can always be more perfect.
The X-men jacket is made by a company named Vanson. I know this because I have one, they will make them upon request but they cost nearly 1k. That is the stunt jacket that they have, the back was torn from harness use in the snow scene. The X-men last stand jacket is made by the Original Leather factory in Canada, I also have that jacket.
We animated a bunch of the Birthday sequence years ago, He wore the chest armor and upper arms and boots the rest we matchmoved and keyframed... Look to his elbows for some major issues in how he moved his arms vs how the armor needed to move.
Propstore is such good people and always auctioning off the coolest stuff. Still kicking myself for not trying to grab some of the Netflix marvel show costumes
Oooooh the OG Wolverine jacket!!!! I cosplayed as Wolverine a few times before, and the last time I did it I finally got the hairdo right! I spent so much time analyzing his attire from his first scene in the movie, frame by frame and even photos and made a list of everything he wore. Yes, every single layer he wore in the cold snowy Canada scenes lol Everything for the cosplay was bought, the jacket from Ultimate Jackets, and thus the most expensive part of the cosplay, everything else I got here and there from Walmart Amazon and eBay (the boots I used were, fittingly enough, Wolverine brand steel-toed boots.) They were the closest in appearance to his actual boots I could find, and I was proud of the final result! ^_^
Been so busy changing my life around for 2024 and beyond based on so many of the great minds including the great Adam Savage. Missed so much content and it's left a void in my daily schedule. Coming back to see so much great content about all the things makes me happy I can have my morning coffee, yoga and Tested again. Thank you all for all you do.
David Mack is a real mensch. His style is very painterly and rides the line between the more classical, iconic work of Alex Ross and the more impressionistic or surreal style of a Dave McKean or a Bill Sienkiewicz. His work for Marvel, in particular on Jessica Jones but also on Echo which he co-created with Joe Quesada, has influenced a lot of the MCU's more stylised and abstract designs when it comes to promos and key art, and he is always a welcome and enjoyable presence when his posts of new pieces of art or flashbacks to older ones show up in my feed.
That thumbnail. Adam FLEXING with screen used StarLord blaster in one hand and Wolverine claws on the other. “I am the most powerful geek on the planet.” So jealous of the toys he gets to play with.
The very first thing I noticed was, even though Starlord's gun is clearly a prop, and not real, Adam still holds it like a real gun (aka, finger off the trigger). Well done Adam!
I grew up with bill purcell, special effects supervisor on robocop, home alone, exorcist, a million more. But he told me they made all those suits out of hot glue sticks. Melted down, poured into a form, painted or pigment added while melted. It can get very heavy, so plates can be used of lightweight plastic for areas that don’t need to flex. But that’s how they made robocops suit.
I definitely prefer the Wolverine claws that extend above the knuckles. The newer design from The Wolverine to deadpool 3 looks odd when they're below the knuckles
I get why, but it still makes me giggle to use gloves to hold newer made things (as opposed to 100 yr +) folks just tossed around and/or wore. Everything here is so cool.
Very interesting. Looks like the Iron Legion chest piece was a reused mold from the Mark 42 from Iron Man 3. I always assumed that the Mark 42 and Mark 43 for AoU were twins with a different livery but comparing this piece made me realize there’s just enough small differences to tell the physical armor apart. (Narrower taper to the pointed tops of the piece above the arc and no circle piece behind the lower outer chest vents, etc.) Though they did replace the suit here with a visual effect as the Iron Legion armors are very different with a narrow center light.
Just keep in mind while stuff in these videos is predominantly higher-end, far cheaper (yet still very cool) pieces can be had with sufficient patience, flexibility, and research. Not to say the high-end isn't wish-worthy, but if you'd like to collect, there's more low-end opportunity than many realize.
that iron legion armor is really strange. it doesn't match the iron legion design from age of ultron and it actually looks like a repaint of the mk XLIII.
I believe the house party scene in Ironman 2 is the second and last time that RDJ wore a full costume, knowing an "Avengers" movie was coming up shortly and said "I would rather run around in the stocking suit with the balls all over it than wear any other suit".
X-Men was the first DVD our family got, going from VHS to that disc was amazing. Physical media needs to be kept around in some way, even of it's the dumb "limited" model that some video games go with.
Fr. I’ve started collecting physical copies of anything I enjoy or feel should be preserved, as well as players for them, because streaming services will soon want to do away with privately owned copies of media, be it music, film, tv, etc.
@Occult_Orchid Nice, keep on preserving your favs for the future. It's probably not as big of an issue in film collecting as it is in my hobby of collecting old video games, but if you're collecting older players for all this media, you may need some converters for the hookups. Modern tvs don't even come with component inputs, it might be worth it to look into. In the gaming community, we have these very expensive boxes, one is a Framemeister, RetroTink is another, that can properly convert those older cables' signals to HDMI(it's also really important for controller input lag). I'm almost positive there's a cheaper solution for someone like u if u haven't already needed to get a converter a types, there's so many bad Chinese ones on Amazon/ebay.
I love these vids but have some constructive criticisim on this one. As you were pointing out details on the gun you had tgat area aimed away from the camera. The same thing when talking about detail on the jacket, the editing did not line up with what you were talking about. Please consider the framing of your shots or the audience will miss most of what you are talking about.
It’s insane that during this entire conversation there is an Enterprise D chair just sitting there and they can’t talk about it because they’re talking marvel
wow this is the first time that i've gotten here so very early on release lol, i'm currently drawing with a 0.03mm pen while watching videos from my subscriptions lol. ^_^
Hey @Tested, It's really hard to tell from the video but I've always wondered does Starlords gun have an actual sort of iridescent sheen to them when seen up close due to a combination of the metal and airbrushing? Or is it the lights? It's the main thing I remember about the gun, and mainly the helmet, from the movie but have never been sure if that was just lighting for the scenes they show up in or if they really were supposed to have a sort of bi-lighting adonized look.
A hundred years from now when an alien world picks up on our broadcast into space of our Hollywood weapons they will go - whoo we don't want to mess with this planet~! Shalom
That Iron Legion piece looks in real bad shape, cracks and damage all over. Was it intended that way, or was it just not taken good care of until it ended up here?
It's for duplication only - across all the pistols that were made; 'hero', lightweights, soft rubbers, etc. I helped make these pistols for the first Guardians movie.
@@MrMrbrianbechtelcost, weight and safety weren't factors when we produced these. All materials used for the 'hero' guns were to make them work and last for the duration of the film. We made plenty of 'softs' for fighting, etc.

Hey Matt, I actually just came here to post all the correct film, what a project! Still think it is best film to have worked on
We did well, eh?
Yep, all correct. Woody worked on it in the other workshop run by Toby.
I love how Adam goes into the details, the airbrushing, laser work, weight, etc.

David Mack is an amazing artist, and such a super nice guy. I met him once at a comic con in the '90s.

The iron legion seems to have different arc reactor shape, and this looks more like the mark 42 repainted
It's so sad that these are so rare to see now. The actual props were what sold those first Marvel films.

where the hell do people get these?

Make'm work

Trigger discipline, yet flagging your friend all day! 😅
Just kidding but sheesh. Lol
Came here for this comment. Not disappointed. 😆

Why work so hard to paint simulated heat treated steel? Why not just make the part from steel and heat treat it?
