@@stitISH I have learned that different leave grow quick (2weeks) and other over a month. I think the key the growing environment. The leafs like high humidity, warmth, and lots of light. I have purchased cake plates, the one with a dome. I use seed starter soil. I water a little more the damp, I cut the leaf stem at and angle , then dip in rooting hormone. I place on the cake plate and cover it up. The cake plate is the perfect greenhouse. The dome is clear so lots of light can get in, it keeps the humidity up. I then place in a warm place. I've had a lot of luck with this method.

Wow just found you on TH-cam ! brilliant info... I have been starting them off in water till roots grow, then potting and waiting forever for the babies to come and they do eventually but still now I see, from way down where the roots grow then there is the problem of one long stemmed leaf with lots of wee friends.
There is something so satisfying in getting something so sweet to grow from a leaf.

Hi Tina!! I had watched your video 3 months ago and you gave me the confidence to try propagating two AF leaves just to see if they grew new babies and YAY lol!! One leaf sprouted 3 babies and the other one took alittle longer but it has one baby so far!! I'm so happy because now that Spring is almost here I can propagate more leaves from the original mother plants and get more babies😍!! @@stitISH It took about a month to two months but I had them under grow lights in covered containers for humidity. I would air them out every few days. Hope this helps.

I’ve got a question....I have 3-4 at home that have leaves that have long stems on the outside row, but all the inner rows of leaves still look like babies. What causes that, and what should I do?

Yes I like this Video so detail and good clear explanation and tips... my Av fell on floor and I got a broken leaf. I don’t know leaf can get babies ... when I got it I got at least 3-4 leaf but water root don’t works rot the stem. And I m not patient enough so I threw them away ...

Do you put a lid on container and what is blue cloth in bottom of container
in the past many years ago I did put lids on containers but now I never do, I find that just the container itselfs helps to rise the humidity and creates a perfect growing environment with fresh air circulation. With lids there are more chances of the humidity getting too high and plants can rot easily... the blue cloth if felt and I will be making a video about that soon... Hope this helps. xx

One concern I have is when I buy African violets at my local nurseries or Lowe's/Home Depot, they don't have names of the violets, just a basic violet label! So frustrating. I will be ordering from you as soon as your violets are available.
Glad you like the videos Karen. Having the name of a violet is great but if you find a nonamer and just love the blooms on it, it doesn't matter if it is named or not. Just follow your heart's desire so if you see something at the grocery store that make's your heart skip a beat, just grab it, make yourself happy...

This is the best propagation video from leaves I've ever watch! I noticed the low temperatures is increasing the length of sprouting time, also the very complex hybrids take forever to produce babies :)

I have been able to grow new babies, where I have problem is when I put them in pots they either get too wet or too dry.
How to you keep them just moist?
Hello Audette, the soil may be the problem, if your soil is too heavy, it will take a long time to dry up. The base of the soil you use should be made of Peat Moss. Peat moss wets quickly when watered but also dries up quickly (what violets like) so you may want to check the type of soil you are using. Babies should also be planted in very small pots exactly for this reason, the smaller the pot, the faster the soil will dry therefor does not stay wet a long time so check on the size of your baby pots. If your soil is the right type, and the pots are the right size, you may be the problem.... haha... I mean by this that you may be watering too often, it is good to let the soil dry up a little between waterings. Some people water on a specific day like on Monday's .... violet don't like this because on Monday, it may not need extra water, it may just need it on Thursday so when people water a violet that is already sitting in moist soil, the soil gets wet and the plants tend to rot. I will make a complete video on this showing and explaining exactly how to water african violets. It is very simple and knowing the why's and how's will help you and many others to get this important part of growing violets right. Hello Sheri, the brown edges are just age, some leaves can do this now and then and this could also have been caused by a time where there leaf went a little too dry for a little too long.

Tina, when you cut off a young leaf you want to use for propagation do you need to cut off the old leaves too to keep the symmetry?
Hello Doreen, if your goal is to grow the plants as symmetric as possible, then I would suggest that you don't remove any of the younger leaves for propagation as this will disrupt the symmetry. Removing a leaf will create a hole .... If you need to take something off the plant to propagate, chose one or more of the outer older leaves as taking some of these off will not disturb the rosette. If example you do have to remove a younger leaf and then remove all of the outer leaves to keep symmetry, that is ok but sad because you will be losing half your plant size all at once and just for one leaf.... Hi Tina, after watching your video the first time I followed your instructions but for some reason I covered the container and it is not very big - I used a large entree tupperware container. I put a wet paper towel on the bottom and covered it and after 2 weeks it is still wet inside and the soil of the leaves is still wet. When you put the baby pots in the plastic box, is the blue thing on the bottom wet? And do you cover the box? And does the box have to be much bigger than the little cups? Any guidance would be great! Thanks!

Hi, it is a very helpful video, is there something I can use to substitute perlite and vermiculite? It is almost imposible to find one here
Hello Ratih, I just did a quick google search on the subject and found some info for the perlite ... "For lightening soils, use rice, peanut and pecans hulls in potting soil mixes or garden beds. Their irregularly-shaped pieces break down slowly, making these hulls an excellent substitute for perlite."
I would suggest that you google the question and see what comes up, there may be other options and I also saw that there is stuff that can be used instead of vermiculite.
I would also see online if you can find perlite or vermiculite sellers that can send to you, we can get almost anything online these days. The products may be banned in your country for some reason thou, if that is the case, I would try out the substitutes.
Hope you can find a substitute that is available in your area.

Thank you so much, rice hulls is very easy to find and very cheap, I also find some online shop who sells perlite and vermiculite in my country, unfortunatenly they are very expensive, so I'm going to try to find what is best to substitute them, thank you very much for replying my message
Hello Ratih,
Glad you found something but before repotting ALL of your plants, do repot just a few with the hulls and wait 5-6 weeks to see how it works out before doing all of them. If the hulls work correctly, you still may have to adjust the quantities to figure out the correct proportions... The only way to know is to do it with a few and wait, only time will tell you if the plants will be happy in their new soil mixture. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Tina xx

Hello Robert, quickly open it up to get some air in there, if there is white mold, it is too humid so remove the cover and arrange for a humidity a little lower. Hope this helps. xx

sorry for the late reply, I am very behind in the messages... In most cases, the leaves will arrive fresh and crisp and donot require to be rehydrated but in a minority of cases, if the box got caught in a lot of heat or got lost in the mail and traveled for many many days, the leaves could need some rehydrating (the leaves would be limp so not hard and crispy) I intend to talk about this in a future video. Olá, eu não coloco as tampas porque a umidade fica muito alta e as folhas apodrecem. Apenas colocando as plantas em um recipiente plástico maior, isso cria um micro-clima úmido um pouco mais alto, o que é perfeito.

Can we take off a leaf if the plant is in bloom?
Hello Lynn, yes you can take a leaf off a blooming plant not a problem at all. The plant will not suffer and the leaf will be as good as it would coming off a non blooming plant. The only thing that is important is that the plant be well watered before you remove the leaf, you don't want to cut off a leaf when the plant is dry and limp. Hope this helps. Tina xx
How often should I water African violets from cuttings?
Hello Helen, it is not a how often but simply keep them moist. The how often to water varies a lot from home to home because it has a lot to do with the humidity of the air. The leaves and plants do drink water with their roots but the majority of the drying up of the soil will have to do with the growing conditions (example hot and dry conditions in the growing area will require more frequent waterings compared to a home that is cool with higher humidity.) So the trick is to figure it out within your growing conditions.
The type of soil used will also affect the how fast it dries up ... some soils dry up very quickly versus others that will retain water longer ...
You will want to check on your leaves every few days, and water when the soil seems to be going on the dry side. You want to keep the soil on the moist side (not wet) just moist and the soil can be allowed to dry up slightly (but not super dry). (((((do not water violets when they are already wet, this promotes root rot ... )
It is a little balancing act that you have to figure out within your particular conditions and once you will have figured it out, it will become easy.
I know this is probably not the answer you wanted but I can't give you an answer like "water every XX number of days" it just doesn't work that way lol

it takes more than just a few minutes as you claimed, for that soggy soil to dry out. more like a day as in 24 hrs. before adding a afr violet leaf to propagate. ijs

I can see the little plants popping up. I'm soooooooooo excited!! I can't believe I got them to grow. You gave me the courage to try it with your science experiments lol. How come the one we buy in Home Depot don’t have no name ,how can we know the name.
Hello Justina, In the violet world, there are thousands of hybrids that have been registered with the african violet society of America (AVSA). These are considered collection plants so they have names and registration numbers ect. The violets you find at Home Depot are for the most part unnamed because they are grown in LARGE plant production places and are grown for the end user who doesn't care about the names or registration information ect. The end user that buys these plants buys them for their beauty and because they want to add the plant to the window sill.
Althou they don't have names, they are still very beautiful plants and are usually tough little plants.
It is the same for any type of plant, you have some that are available in stores everywhere and then if you dig deeper on the internet you will find collectors and hyberdizers with very unique hard to find hybrids. The hybrids rarely hit the store shelves for the regular shopper.
