The topic is fine, except it's 95% propaganda. These sorts of videos implicitly vilify North Korea. Of course, they have plenty to be criticized for, but that kind of one-sided blame misses the bigger picture, ie, how did North Korea come to be? Why do they continue to be as they are? Who/what maintains the geopolitical status quo? Why is North Korea on a constant war footing? Why do they feel threatened? Are they in fact being threatened? Why do the Koreas remain divided? In whose interest is a divided Korea? Why does the US refuse to sign a peace treaty? Why does North Korea pursue nukes? Is it offensive or defensive?

It's for all of us privileged people outside of North Korea, for our education and knowledge, to help us understand what their lives are like. This video wouldn't help any North Korean trying to defect, these ways are not safe and they are already informed about them, I think most North Koreans know how to escape, and they also know if they fail, they will die.

He was shot 4 times while crossing the DMZ and lost half of his entire blood, but he defected with his life and that was all that mattered to him.
Honestly, even just listening to this is heartbreaking. Especially to hear that even if you managed to escape the country, your family/ kids will have to pay extreme price for generations- I sincerely hope and pray that somehow this dictatorship comes to an end

If you somehow manage to come to the south Korean embassy you are safe, they provide you with the citizenship and passport snd you can't be deported to north korea while leaving the embassy and strp foot on chinese ground

Watching this scared me more than any horror movie I've watched, in all honesty. I'm Korean-American, and the fact that I was this close to being born in North Korea if my parents had been born there terrifies me. Good god I am so grateful I don't live there, and am instead safe at home in the U.S

I've been researching North Korea for a while now to put myself in the shoes of those poor souls but I'm still learning a lot. Now I'm so grateful for the life I'm living in Canada, a safe and free country with plenty of food and kind people. If it interests you, then study the subject beyond superficial historical talking points. North Korea didn't emerge organically out of the blue. America had a lot to do with it. In fact, it's America that unfairly divided Korea after WWII.
Kosta M. No one on the outside really seems to know what it's like in North Korea. The "starvation" we often hear about happened in the 90s as a result of floods, weather, and other mistakes. The words of escapees also have to be taken with some grain of salt. Like escapees from other regimes hostile to the US, they have shown a penchant for exaggeration and stretching the truth because they are often paid and endorsed to back a certain anti-communist view. Western media eat these stories up and make celebrities of these people.

I am Chinese and remember seeing the China North Korean border at Changbaishan at the Tumen River. The locals would tell me stories about some escapees who would flee to the village. Made me cry.
You missed one more significant way: Becoming a sports athlete and representing North Korea abroad at sporting events, like the Olympics. And never returning back home.
As someone else said, that falls under elites. The only people who can become Olympic athletes are rich enough to afford a proper training in the sport, or they're children of government officials who decided they wanted to see life outside of the country.

I’m part Japanese and I’m glad that our government doesn’t send North Koreans back to Korea, to me that would be cruel since if they did they’d most likely send them back to their homeland, and another factor is that I feel that since Japan doesn’t really like foreigners in the country they would be treated like 2nd class citizens.

As a Chinese living in the northern part of China, I know a thing or two about this matter: 1) Don't go to Beijing, the capital city. Even though the south korean embassy is located in there, North korean spies also take root in this city. I know a Korean restaurant near my home is actually run by NK secret police department, kinda like an open secret. Those guys are here to spy on South Korean residents living in Wangjing quarter of Beijing, and if you are careless you could easily get caught not by Chinese officials, but NK spies. 2) Yes China officially have a deal with UK to deport any refugee back to NK. As far as I know however, border controls often keep one eye closed on this matter. There are many Chinese citizen of Korean origin living near the northern border who are sympathizers. It may be far from totally safe, but still it is better choice than going through the DMZ. 3) From what I heard, the underground trade routes between China and North Korea are flourishing. Chinese TV dramas and South Korean music are pouring into the northern region of NK, which becomes a headache for local official. But still, there are changes. People are getting aware of the outside world.

I've been researching North Korea for a while now to put myself in the shoes of those poor souls but I'm still learning a lot. Now I'm so grateful for the life I'm living in Canada, a safe and free country with plenty of food and kind people. Everyone should be grateful as well, regardless of the country they're living in. ♥It gives me chills to know that this isn't a historical event and that hundreds of thousands of people are suffering in real time, as you're reading this very comment. It also breaks my heart to see the sad faces in the images of North Korean people... I hope things get better for them although I really don't know how North Korea's endless cycle of hell will end, since their leader is still quite young and someone else will just take over him after he dies. Not to mention that NK's government will apparently threaten to start a nuclear war for whatever reason once he dies---which I genuinely hope isn't true, dear lord. Most likely, it isn't. No one on the outside really seems to know what it's like in North Korea. The "starvation" we often hear about happened in the 90s as a result of floods, weather, and other mistakes.
The words of escapees also have to be taken with some grain of salt. Like escapees from other regimes hostile to the US, they have shown a penchant for exaggeration and stretching the truth because they are often paid and endorsed to back a certain anti-communist view.
Western media eat these stories up and make celebrities of these people.

As I am partially Russian and Korean (both North and South), I truly hope that one day, North and South Koreans can meet each other at the border, but not as enemies: as friends. This makes me realize that I should not take being born in the United States for granted
As a Chinese living in the northern part of China, I know a thing or two about this matter:
1) Don't go to Beijing, the capital city. Even though the south korean embassy is located in there, North korean spies also take root in this city. I know a Korean restaurant near my home is actually run by NK secret police department, kinda like an open secret. Those guys are here to spy on South Korean residents living in Wangjing quarter of Beijing, and if you are careless you could easily get caught not by Chinese officials, but NK spies.
2) Yes China officially have a deal with UK to deport any refugee back to NK. As far as I know however, border controls often keep one eye closed on this matter. There are many Chinese citizen of Korean origin living near the northern border who are sympathizers. It may be far from totally safe, but still it is better choice than going through the DMZ.
3) From what I heard, the underground trade routes between China and North Korea are flourishing. Chinese TV dramas and South Korean music are pouring into the northern region of NK, which becomes a headache for local official. But still, there are changes. People are getting aware of the outside world.

There is a way.
You go to Piongyang and you go to the Kim Jong Il statue. You start walking into the statue while crouching and jumping like a maniac. You will eventually glitch out and half of your body will sink in to the ground. When this happens you just have to turn 180 degrees and crouch, while looking straight up. This will glitch you even more and you will be teleported to the entrance of the Tokyo sky tree in Tokyo, Japan. They forgot to patch this ;)
