Then it's 45-60 minutes to get an ambulance out to the site (if you are lucky) and the same to get to a medical center (and then not a true trauma center where you'd really want to be after a serious accident). It's a fun road, but untrained numbnuts cover that road like flies on flypaper. The way he was all over the road, I'm assuming that they closed the road for the video shoot. I also wouldn't want to be plowing through the piles of leaves in this video, hoping that I've got traction. I've almost been in 2 accidents on that road. One time a Harley locked up his brakes in a turn, fish-tailed into my lane and only my quick reaction time, fresh brakes and standing on the petal saved his ass (we wound up bumper to bumper, about 1-2 feet apart when I got to a full stop). The other time a sport-bike took too much speed into a corner and came across into my lane by a foot or more, head-on. I had a bit of shoulder on my side, so put two wheels of my car into the dirt rather than hit him head-on. My alignment wasn't right for the trip home, but I figured it was better than splattering him into the windshield.

Nice car, good driver, nice driving and for the most part, great camera work - Overall, a great video! But it seems like either the producer, director, editor or all of them does not understand high performance driving and cars as there is waaay to little focus on what is the impressive parts. The reason why the Gymkhana-series works (and I know it's a high, tough and almost unrivaled matching point) is because they let the "hero" moments of the impressive driving sit for longer (whether that is a drifting moment, the speed, a jump or what not) and then use the quick cuts to keep the tempo up. In other words, they are focused on what the action is. The quick cuts here almost serve no other purpose than to show Scott shifting up and/or pulling the handbrake, which is fine, but without giving us any other type of pay-off in the action, it becomes a little too much and almost 16-gears of Fast & Furious-like. There is also a lack in the sense of speed and I think it might be because the sound and pictures are odd or unmatched to the action in a lot of places. I have done some stunt driving and other types of work for movies and tv myself, so I know how difficult the production is. I don't think this video is bad as such, especially the beginning caught me in and I kept watching for some of the really great camera work and drone shots, but I think this shows how important it is for the right people to understand what action they want to showcase and have a plan for that. That is where people like Scotto comes into the picture or in the regular movie production, let the people with the right amount of stunt experience supervise the shots and co-direct the scenes.
@@RatBürgerSk8 “choice of angels could have been better.” Have you ever been to the dragon? Uphill cliff on one side, downhill cliff on the other. Options are VERY limited when it comes to angles and such.
@@Tyler-ts2ld You could argue the same for Pikes Peak and Tianmen Mountain of Climbkhana - But essentially, that's why you do location spotting and if necessary, build camera rigs, platforms etc. to support your on location shooting. Personally, I'm ok with most of the angels, but I would agree with Bub, that it could potentially have helped them as well to showcase the action - Such things as perception of speed is highly dependable on which shots you use. Like - A lot of the "fast" driving in movies is done with less than 100 kmh / 60 mph.
@@KF2NationalKartcrg while I understand what you are saying and do agree with some of it, pikes peak is much wider than the dragon and has much more workable area as far as setting up stuff for shots. The dragon is VERY narrow and barely has room for the handful of pull offs available. Most of those pull offs are barely big enough for one car between the TN overlook and the NC state line
@@Tyler-ts2ld I haven't been to either of the three places, but I believe you. However, the top of crop film crews would still find their way through it, which at this level of filming (even though it's for TH-cam with I guess not the biggest crew) should be possible. Looking it through again, I could see a lot of potentially good spots for "locked" cameras, cameramen, placements of GoPros etc. but if possible or not, I essentially have no right idea. As I mentioned, I think a lot of the frames look good enough. Especially the first minute or so of the video has some really nice shots IMO, and I do like the creative expression of it. I just wish there would be more focus on the action and the stuff that should make this feel special - And that's where I feel like who ever was the lead of this, either did not have the time needed and had to freestyle some or don't understand cars and performance driving enough. As said, I know how difficult these projects can be and I'm not trying to throw anyone under the bus - But it pains me a bit, how much better this could have been. IMO, the scope of this should have been to showcase a crazy touge-styled run, so the storytelling action sequences is the speed of the car flying through the woods, the ondulations of the suspension, the cambered corners, locking of rears, etc. etc etc. These are the 'hero' moments that matters and should be allowed to breath in order to tell the best story.
A behind the scenes documentary for this video would be HUGELY entertaining!!! The drone flying as others have noted as unbelievable! I'm guessing this had to be ran & filmed in stages? By far the dopest rally edit I've ever seen 🔥🔥🔥 From the driving to the fpv drone sequences absolutely slayed it.
I swear. Anything redbull does is just pure art

Been waiting on this video for so long! So excited to see a rally car finally go through the Tail 😈

This was incredible! Subaru sound, the setting, the leaves, the colors, the drone shot! Incredible
The drone cinematography in this is as impressive as the run! Amazing footage!
That stretch of road is about an hour from me. Beautiful road
I had a smile for every mile . I have done this road several times and loved every trip . Great editing , would love to see the long version some time .
Pretty dang awesome! As someone who lives 30 mins away from the dragon and has driven it A-LOT this video was awesome! I never heard anything about a production crew shooting a video in recent years.
I for one love the filmmaking of this piece. Well done.
The real test would be to see if he can stay in the correct lane 😂
Terrible driving if you ask me. Having driven on this road quite a few times I would track him down for crossing the line so much. I am OK with driving it fast and aggressive but when you cross the line you're really saying you only value yourself and not others lives.
I’m pretty sure the road was closed for this though. I highly doubt the driver would cross the line if there was even a chance of other cars being present
@@albertblack6615Red Bull closes off the roads for these stunts. They coordinate with local police, government and locals to make it all happen and to make sure no one outside of the car gets hurt. The driving being done is also for the camera but naturally driving this road with its tight turns as if it was a real 1 time race would naturally yield bada** footage anyways and that’s exactly how he drove. He sped through that course as any PROFESSIONAL rally driver would so in actuality, it’s phenomenal driving. Definitely not whatever you just stated. Also, you don’t have the skill or power to catch him in that thing either. You ain’t catching anything but leaves in your grill 🤣
@@albertblack6615omg lol the road was obviously closed
@@pinheadlarry2921no it wasn't. They just went early on a Wednesday morning when they knew it'd be quiet.
The driving is great......BUT, the drone flying is off the charts!!!!
Damn that was awesome I instantly had to share and of course watch it again❤
As a local to the dragon and knowing those corners it makes this video 10X better
What a pain to watch. Every 3 seconds changing camera angles. You never really get a feel for what's happening.
That’s what I was thinking, they should’ve replayed the same things from different angles instead of cutting the same thing into a bunch of different angles
The camera angles are absolutely incredible. I love that it's just the sound of the car!!
its like gymkana with travis pastrana but with drones... awesome video by red bull
That was a crazy ass track! Loved the driving and drone footage and scenery!! Beautiful!!
Oh to be hiking through the woods and hear this car approaching and then fly by. Incredible work on all parts here!
Yup!
The pure sound of that sti is amazing. 👏

those drone shots trailing the car up close is pretty bad ass
The drone pilots deserve some mad props for this as well. Nice driving and flying!
The way it’s filmed, the light, the sun, reminds me Ari Vatanen at Pikes Peak.
The closest officially named American Touge to us in Virginia! Glad to see it on TH-cam!
For me a little bit too much adhd editing but very nice camerawerk and i love the engine and transmission sounds👍👍🥳
Impressive what can be done when you have a fully closed road and no fear of obstacles.
Being a local to the dragon. This a masterpiece.
This film gave me goosebumps, thank you Redbull
I watched this probably ten times or so i love it . The sound is amazing 😊
It would have been cool to see him in the Gravity Cavity. That section is nuts.
I was thinking the same! I think they showed a quick snippet of it but I’d love to hear Scott’s thoughts on the road at that kind of speed! A reaction video would be cool and BTS footage!
He said didn't send it on gravity cavity after he made it back to the store, I assume because he was reading the road as he went for the real run. Killboy tried helping memorize the road prior but there was way too much to even bother given the time they had. Either way he went stupid fast for what couldn't have been more than his the fifth full look of the road.
@@CoyWhite I have been through there quite quick many times. I know exactly why it was named that. It's a hell of ride. LOL
@@spooler7828 yeah and honestly I feel like if you did cut the lane going overlook bound you’d be fine but NC bound, you might ramp straight off the side of the mountain lol.

This is insane. Mad props to each and everyone in the team for them to produce such fine cinematography. It felt like I was watching a forza cutscene, the engine noise and the drone work really made it amazing. 10/10
More like a Need for Speed the Run
These people should do the chase scenes in the James Bond films.
It would be so cool to see the onboard uncut footage as well! That being said, what a driver! I'm so glad the time attack car is still around!
Ahhhhh....126 the dragon, aka deals gap.
It's been a while since I've road it. A group of us that raced ama/wera street bikes would race it during the summer. All 318 (we counted once at 311) timed from the hotel at the bottom to the over look at the reservoir.
Thanks for featuring this video.... takes me back and have me a great smile. 👍
omg, this drone footage is OFF THE CHARTS REDONCULOUS. The driving and camera angles, floor board, internal cabin, driver perspective added, is whack STUPENDOUSLY SUPERB .
Beautiful! Is there any way we could get a full unedited onboard run of the dragon ?
He probably didn't do the whole thing in one go. Unless they had a 100 camera guys & 20 drones.
They might not be able to, otherwise people would go out and challenge it
@@RChero1010 this is part of the reason why I'm interested , kinda want to compare his overlook to stateline time is (assuming they actually did a full run) vs the current fastest not so legal times 😆
@@dftooj814 Yeah, but one of the reasons the Dragon is so dangerous is that people go out there, overdrive the road and get themselves in trouble.
@@TripSkyWalker A full unedited onboard run needs no camera guys nor any drones. Just the camera mounted on his helmet or somewhere in/on the car facing forward.
Just an amazing closed road drive.
Now, what they don't show? So many of those corners have like 40+ foot drops, straight down, just a few feet past the edge of the road. That was a BUTT puckering display!
I've driven that road, many, many times. If It was closed, I could drive it fast, but never that fast! He's an amazing driver!!!
Love to see the drivers view for the whole run. What a buzz!
The audio alone in this is amazing. Top it off with drone clips.. just incredible
Damn good editing, cinematography, driving, set up, weather, producer, director, …….and mechanics nobody thanks us in videos lol trully to be a classic
Are we gonna see a full. Uncut version of this?
Doubt it. These videos are never done in a single run. You can tell he is doing things like following camera cars at some parts and running the same stretch of road multiple times based on skid marks.
It exists, the angles from the rear passenger quarter were actually taken from the only full run.
Check out the video on the dirtfish youtube channel
@@steveg5886 still cut and edited, but way better for people that actually know the road and want to see how he did driving it.
This is what I feel like in my head when I take the backroads home from work in my WRX
I always considered it more skill to keep it in one lane.
Bro. This is the dragon. If you keep it in one lane and try to make those apexes at decently fast speeds, you’re gonna fly off the mountain…
@@immadanis1822 I have spent more time on that road than most. It’s nothing but a major road to me.

Congratulations on the Emmy win for this! So exciting! The first time that my husband and I rode the Dragon was on our Harley Road King. We’ve been on it several other times in our Jeep Wrangler. This road deserves so much respect! Definitely not for the faint at heart. It is an exhilarating ride! ❤🎉
So so sick! I can’t believe they don’t shut the road down once a year to do this type of race. A goodwood style one at a time timed race would be so so fun out here. Bring a ton of money to the area too. Make it happen Red Bull and Subaru!
OMFG That was absolutely effin AMAZING! What a run! Dammit man. The production was just as every bit bad ass as the driving was. Massive talent!!
The driving and production level is insane!!!!
The need for speed editing was clutch for this type of film. Was fun and exciting to watch. Nice job. Kick ass driving. Drone and car.
Must be nice to have both sides of the road and the skill set to drift. I have driven the Dragon many times in something as humble as a Saturn Ion to a marginally tuned 300ZX Z32 5 spd NA. I have always pushed to the limit of the car. No way I could come and play with Scott. Sweet ride.
The most dangerous stretch of US129 is the "Airport Murder Mile" but this part sees some carnage too. Awesome video! Love the drone work, and the driving too of course.
that stretch sucks, so many accidents, so much traffic.
It's called "ikillya" highway by us locals
@@aelneloop I use that one too 😆
Where is the airport murder Mile
@@clayshowalter5999 It's the mile or so that runs by McGhee Tyson Airport in Alcoa, TN. The car dealerships refer to it as the Airport Motor Mile, but local drivers have come up with other names.
Sure wish this was footage of the entire run. :(
Yeah with the time too.
Yeah for real. The 9 thousand cutaways is annoying AF. Just show me the run.
Yeah this was horrible to watch. You can tell this was multiple runs and way over produced for something so simple.
0:55 and 3:55 are a perfect example of them over editing. Used the same damn clip
@@ryanmolloy5421 yeah, the constant barrage of jump cuts made it almost completely unenjoyable. Trying to turn a regular run into a Hoonigan Gymkhana-style video didn't really work out like they intended here.
They likely didn't even do one proper run. This is all just edited to look fancy.
I'm sure the video would've been way more successful if they actually just placed a few cameras and did a proper run.
Congratulations, so cool that something that hits so close to home win an award.
I was there riding it in 1975, as a 14 year old in a boarding school Ford LTD wagon out of Rome,GA, after going down the Chatooga River in rafts. A few months after seeing Deliverance. And James Dickey had gone to the same school. Cool ride.
Damn this is crazy! Some close slides there. I'm so jealous. Be nice if us regular folks got to attempt hitting some apexes on the road! I love pushing myself while keeping it on my side of the yellow line, but if I could out-in-out a few corners, it would really make this road a dream!
Us regular folk also have to worry about the cops occasionally policing excessive speeds there as well...
Loved driving this road for the first time. I think I ended up taking 3 trips down and back. I personally enjoyed the challenge of going as fast as possible without crossing the line.
My. God. This was a masterpiece, every part of it. Special mention to the sound engineer(s). This finally made me consider what is my favorite sound, and it's the sounds that that Subaru was making.
Really cool video, and Scott Speed is a great driver. I'd be more impressed if he stayed in his lane, like we have to. Having said that, hats off to all who participated/contributed to this endeavor!
Watched this with my sound system all the way up....mmmmph.
Tipping my hat to the videographers, drone pilot, editor(s), and sound crew. Damn fine edit.
As an FPV guy, I gotta say the flying and editing was on point!!
I wish y’all could have also done a full length one-take 360 camera shot along the whole thing!
Scott, you're a great driver n all but damn...the drone work is amazing!
I fly quads too. Trust me, driving like that on the dragon is much harder.
Sweet! Just a note to the general public: professional driver on a closed course, please stay in your own lane when you drive here!
@@GnashtyWords Oh I completely agree, but I understand if you give a rally driver a closed road, he's gonna rally it.
Wouldn't it be awesome to see another run staying in a single lane?
Yes, some people justify crossing the mustard.. Stay on your side, or slow down, or don’t drive it at all .This was closed, so this is 100%ok. But not when there’s traffic
Having the whole road to yourself, what a way to go.
Man, great drivin' AND Flyin' this's a visual masterpiece.
A few too many quick cuts in my opinion, especially from the FPV drone, but otherwise a really great video.
Would love to see the full onboard of this!
A behind the scenes documentary for this video would be HUGELY entertaining!!! The drone flying as others have noted as unbelievable! I'm guessing this had to be ran & filmed in stages? And of course, what was the total time for the run? I feel like this run is the "Ring" for us folks in the USA. It is certainly OUR "Green Hell".
