Hi Eric, I'm from the UK, sixty-four years of age and play off a handicap of +1.3. For years I've had early extension and no rotation, but been able to save hooks and pushes with face manipulation using hands and arms, and a 'get me out of jail' short game. My driving has always been solid, but my irons has been the challenge. This drill has transformed my ball striking, shape, flight (de-lofted) as I'm now rotating! This coupled with your alignment stick drill which stops me thrusting forward and trying to get my knees together at impact has been a game changer. I recommend these drills without reservation. Thank you for giving me the impetus to get even lower.
This is probably the best video I've seen explaining the problem of standing up. This drill makes it very easy to see what is going on and how to envision fixing it.
"... And I wanted him to go home and practice this with at least 20 reps a day for 90 days". Exactly the point of a small fix made to work, but only over a longer period of time with consistent repetition. Thanks for this important point Eric.
Due to some health issues I was unable to play golf for 3 years...A few months ago I started going to the range and after about 3 months I went back to the course with our golf group of 40 plus years.. I've had a bad issue standing up since I started back...awful actually. I found this video and drill and took it to the range and saw much better contact...control...and aim. Yesterday I took it to the course and actually used the choke up method...I took a extra club to allow for the distance and I hit the ball better...and hit more greens that I can remember. On the back 9 I had to drop down a club on my irons because I was flushing it so well..This drill works...Thanks!
HOORAY!!!! Finally somebody is seeing what I'm seeing and ACTUALLY SAYING IT OUT LOUD!!! I thought I was imagining it. I was hoping somewhere I'd find a video where somebody put a line at someone's head or knees a demonstrated that the great and good players are lowering their position!!! They talk about everything else but that.
Phenomenal tip with the right timing. I just figured out how to release the club and I was pulling up out of my swing. This is the key I have been looking for.
This has been my problem as well. Ironically my yardage book has 3 different yardages for each club. No choke, mid grip, and full choke - where my right thumb is right at grip meets shaft. So that’s my fix. Full choke repetitions. And I wondered why I always pure those full choke shots. I’m staying down on the ball. Sigh. Now to incorporate to the rest of my swings. Thank you sir!!!
What I notice with many students they come in with to much bend at the knees at address. After looking at video on a student you see a series of chucked shots. to compensate for chunking they were literally un flexing knees in down swing to try and eliminate the chunk. Once the knee flex was adjusted at address to eliminate most of the knee bend stand closer to the ball bend more at the hips and swing with no compensation. Results were positive and immediate. best example of no knee bend or very little is Freddy.
Hi Eric I have been struggling with early extension for the past 67 years of golf I have greatly appreciated your input on all the different ways to solve this problem
The info that Eric shares in his videos is absolute gold!!! All of his instruction is very well explained for all to understand. This is explained "simply"
This is amazing!! Thank you! Been working on this for some time now. It's the biggest piece of the swing puzzle I'm missing. Cannot wait to give this a try!
Bravo Eric. Lovely information. Thanx for sharing good sir. It was a pleasure seeing you on Grant's recent video as well. When he started posting his 'teaches' videos I really hoped he would have a video with you at some point.
What Eric is describing here is an overhand motion swing. What he's trying to fix is an underhand or downward swing motion. An overhand swing is when the clubhead at impact is above the shoulder plane - as we see in all the professional swings he's referencing.
Very good advice. I discovered this concept for my swing about 2months ago. Why did I discover? I stopped swing the club considered all my swing flaws. Then I consider what needed to change based on the end result I wanted to accomplish with each swing (I I’m a flipper) one can not hit the ball consistently and on target flipping with the right hand DING!!!😮 So, what should I do to stop flipping at the ball?
@@CogornoGolf : good vid. I watched the entire video. Preset with. Closed club face at setup is scary.😬I’m willing to try anything or Make Any adjustments to lower my handi and play more Predictable golf
Excellent lesson! I have struggled with standing for years. Like your student, very inconsistant. What do you think about hovering the club at address, maybe not 2" up, while playing. Seems like it should work. I will test it tomorrow. Thank you.
Standing up is a symptom of bad clubhead position at the top. If you put the clubhead in the right position... the body just reacts. I fix the backswing in order to fix the downswing.
Hey Eric, can I use this same right shoulder down and forward swing thought for sand shots, pitching and chipping? I tend to early extend, flinch and decelerate with the short shots. Thanks for another great lesson!
Hey Mark! You can yes....but doesnt go as far DOWN because less shaft lean for those shots. Forward for sure. Or make sure your chest keeps turning as alternative feel to accomplish same thing
Huge thanks my 7 iron is my 160 club and after 20 reps I hit a 193 yard 7 iron. TH-cam doesn't let you post a picture in comments but I have it! Thanks again!
Arrrrghhhh! This is so me, my poor golf pro constantly tells me not to lift my head but I can’t seem to figure it out. I hope this works for me. Many thanks.
Thanks. I hit pretty solid in driving range but went haywire when on the actual green. 80% topping all the time, although the ball still fly but it costs distance and poor contact. Is it the same problem explaining here ?
Hey! COULD be....I would need to see to be honest. Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com/free trial I'll analyze your swing and build you custom practice plan risk free
Hi Eric, can you please do a video on backswing rotation feels and drills…I have a tendency to reverse pivot sometime which causes various issues…thanks in advance…..
I always wondered and struggled with this shoulder down, stay down approach thinking that i will hit ground way before ball. It is hard to get this into brain that did swing wrong from day one. This mental block of hitting ground before ball gets worse and worse as club gets longer. I feel like i have no body control, club control doing this regardless of being correct approach - hard to adopt.
heres an odd question: after doing 20 reps for 60 days is it time to go back to a higher grip as opposed to gripping down to the shaft? thank you for the great drill.
Hey! Yeah you could try that......I would look and see how your normal swing looks compared to the drill. Also....no such thing as doing this for too long. You could simply do the exact drill for the rest of your life.
I have found the solution it was all in the setup hips under the body rather than outside of the hips there is only one way the hips can go from here the and that is behind me no more early extension the rest of my life is now fulfilled thank you
I don't stand up too much, but this is a great video. My through and turn can be better. Great explanation and clear. I look forward to working that drill.
So I tried your exercise. I completely choked up on the grip, all the way down. It did help me stay down on the shot. But what really surprised me I hit the ball farther with the choked-up grip. Is this possible? One would think the ball wouldn't go very far. Crazy. I always thought the longest club would go farther. Any explanation?
Excellent! Yes for sure.....likely because you are delivering less loft (dynamic loft) When you stand up you early release....do you add loft.....turn an 8 iron into a PW When you stay down you take loft off (like the pros) so think turn an 8 iron into a 6 iron Thats likely it.....combines with potentially hitting it more solid in the middle of the face. Not likely that its speed
Hey Robert! Usually thats from turning the shoulders TOO FLAT late in the backswing (left shoulder going up) If its not that its not enough change in the leg flex/hip tilt (bend left knee down and forward more) Try feeling left shoulder MORE DOWN/left knee more forward LATE in the backswing AT THE SAME TIME that you stand up and see if that solves If not send videos to www.cogornogolf.com we can solve for ya
If you lower the right shoulder and hip without PUSHING the pelvis back to offset the momentum of the club, you are inducing a steep over the top move. The upper body hip move without the offsetting pelvis is WHY you stand up. If you don't stand up you'll MISS THE BALL! Watch the pro videos in this clip, and watch their hips / pelvis position; the pelvis does NOT move closer to the ball.
I struggled with this for years. Personally I think alot of peaple stand in the down swing be cause they are pulling their head to look at the target, instead watching the club hit the ball through impact. I focused on watching the club hit the ball and staying there well after impact. Your trail should will bring your head up naturally. I also focused on keeping my nose the same distance from the ball in the back swing and down swing.

100% agreed! No getting away with not doing the practice reps :)
Excellent point, you have to overcome the habit of standing up which is engrained in you.
😊
Would you add the “step drill” to this to avoid the issue of hitting it fat. Forcing you to rotate through the swing as you maintain that spine angle?
