Entering Nigeria's Floating Slum (#85)

  • Many people told us that we should pay a visit to the Makoko floating slum. There's almost nowhere like it in the world; a fishing village built on stilts, sitting illegally off the coast of the megacity of Lagos. We sought to go there and get a glimpse into the daily lives of the people. What we found was unlike anything I had ever seen in my life.
    --------------------------------------
If you'd like to contribute to the village and help provide a better school life for the kids there, you can donate money by sending it to:
    www.paypal.me/azmakoko
This is the official Paypal account for the entire village.
Principal's phone number/Whatsapp for questions about donations:

If you're interested in making a donation to the village, you can send money to the village's official Paypal account:
    www.paypal.me/azmakoko
The principal of the school (the man in the video) verified this with me and you have my word that it's authentic. Any donations will go toward school supplies for the kids. If you'd prefer to talk to the headmaster directly before making a donation, his number/Whatsapp is:
    +234 810 391 3491
Also, sorry about the video quality in this video, it was raining. It rains a lot in this country.

I don't even know what to say. I was born in Lagos and I have also traveled far, speak and write different foreign languages fluently but I have never been to Makoko before. I read the village is the only place in the world where ppl pay for the garbage dump, to be placed in front of their homes. What can I say? The government is not willing to break the bank(Like Nederlands) to help alleviate the people from such a disaster they dragged themselves. There is no way the government can run away from her shadows. Makoko will continue to reflect in the international propagandistic mind control media as the slum Nigerians live on.
The foreign media narrative is however too poor to the people of that village. The foreign media sees it as a political move to shithole a country they could not fully hijack completely. To the ordinary people, the foreign media does not help them in such a case because the Nigerian government will continue to find a way of rubbing them off the map.
Given the fact that about 200,000 people live there and to a population of 200,000,000. That is 0.001% of Nigerians. The population is well more than many villages I have been to or lived in Abroad. Makoko got the manpower to take the village to the next level with help of the government and the people. They can start with a dredging machine for example to get sand from the sea and landfill the village. This is what they did to EKO-Atlantic, can be done here too. This is not to shun the international propaganda mind-controlling media network but for the sake of humanity

Seeing your tour around Makoko slum community gave me memory down 2 years ago, whilst I had to do a group intervention with colleagues as part of my course study in M.Sc Public Health. They are so used to NGOs and foreigners coming to help them. There are about 6 local heads presiding over the different dialects there. They literally live on where they defecate (the ones living on the water). The blackness of the water is as result of sewage and effluent from drainages from the cities outside there. There is nothing you can do to help a people who see poverty as a culture. Poor sanitation, poor hygiene and lives dependent on fishing. On the other side of the coast, across the lagoon from Makoko slum, lies the most luxurious island for the Super Rich--Banana Island. It is hard to be born there and grow above the life of the slum.

These slums are relics of the past when Nigeria was rich in the 70s and 80s. Migrants from togo, benin, ghana came here. Unfortunately they weren't fully integrated into society. Despite being the worst slum in the state and country you see no violence, and thats special because if you go to any big city in the world, chances are you would see gun violence etc.
Hopefully they get recognized and relocated, as they in direct links with high radiation and possible high electric lines on the water.

Get Ghana out of your mouth. No Ghanaian will ever live in that dirty place. You people feel soo insecure that you want to claim that about 200 thousand people living in that slum are not Nigerians but foreigners but you forget that Nigeria is the world poverty capital of the world with over 100 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty. You hear igbo and Yoruba speakers including Nigerian English and you shamefully say they are not Nigerians and because Togo and Benin are francophone countries did you hear any French or twi over there.

David - That was an unnecessary and shameful act on the Nigerian’s part. That grown, able-bodied man should have rejected his ill-advised offer and waded through the water on his own. The optics of that whole thing were awful. It reeked of an overzealousness to act in a servile manner. Smh.
