Is This A Funeral!? Only in Jamaica (#94)

  • One day, while out driving on my scooter in rural Jamaica, I was invited to join a "gravedigging" for a young guy who had just passed away. Coming from the US, I was expecting this to be a somber affair. Not at all. This is Jamaica, and everything inevitably turns into a celebration.

My neighbors growing up as a kid in Florida were Jamaican, I’m still close with their son to this day. They were the absolute best people! I didn’t have the best home life and they took care of me like I was there own. Ackee and Saltfish, oxtails and cabbage, curry goat with rice and peas and jerk chicken and rice were on the regular rotation. So much better than eating oatmeal for dinner.

That's what the english language as a native-tongue does for you me thinks. It is just much easier than having another native tongue. If he was a native Russian speaker with no knowldege of any english, that could be much harder. Sadly some people get a lot of privilege only by their mother tongue compared to others who donot have the blessing of having "the right" language. I am not saying that all English speakers are bad, i use it as well to get around in the foreign country that i live in, but it is important, that there is no discrimiation due lack of communication skills between the languages. It is a difficult task at hand. I hope that quantum-grammar can help with this matter.

I can also relate the culture facts about the burial ceremony and the fact that we burry our people in the back yard and not in a Graveyard. As as he said, we keep our people close and stay in touch with them traditionally wise.
I could feel myself living there as it wouldn’t be a strange place for me.

This my friends is how you celebrate a life, it is not supposed to be a sad occasion. You should share good memories of the person who has passed and share joy in the fact that they have moved on to the next part of their experience, no matter what you personally believe that is. Have a drink, have a laugh and sure even a tear if that is your thing.

grief comes as a natural human emotion to death, seeing as you won't be able to see the person for a long time, until you pass yourself. But yes, I do agree that people should celebrate the life of the person- because as humans, we survive on happiness.

This is the grave digging, not the funeral. The funeral, which will take place in a church, will be quite somber...and you will have people crying and expressing the natural emotion of grief. Following the church, people will then go to the gravesite for the burial, and then back to the deceased home where the family will provide refreshment. Leading up to the funeral, friends and family will visit the deceased home in the evenings/at night (for about a week) where they'll play dominoes and socialize. That's known as the wake, and it's a period of respect and providing comfort and company for the deceased family. I know this because I grew up in Jamaica. Funerals there are not just about partying. There are designated moments for appropriate conduct.

That's not true. That is ungodly and against the bible. Its either you do things the biblical way and prophetic way or not.
Its from a place of selfishness to have a party and play music and 'celebrate' someone's death in this manner. For millions of years it has been one way, and the last 15 seconds Jamicanics changed it, and you think its right?
Your are not even deep down convinced its the right thing to do yourself.

When he died there where so many Jamaican people that I never met or heard of calling us to tell us how great he was how much he talked about his family and that they all loved us. Ok then please show me a few of the 'plenty of Mother Land references in Jamaican music' from the last 10 years'?
There has not been any since around the 70s-80s as Jamaican culture has now become a culture of hyper-sexualisation. That is your biggest export, directly and indirectly, the consumption and output of mere sex.
As when a society loses its spiritual centre, sex is always the spiritual outlet.
A cultures like Jamaica's that become over-sexualised, without the constraints of chastity and marriage always self-destruct within 3 generations, and stop producing things that reform themselves and the world for its benefits, such as art, science and philosophy (which Jamaica used to give to the world).
And then when philosophies are bankrupt men and women turn to lust in share bordem and discontent, trying to find in it some stimulus and fulfilment from the void and gap open in their culture and hearts.

These videos are so relaxing, I enjoy seeing people just socializing and having a good time, and I love seeing my culture genuinely respected as many people refuse to look past their assumptions and steryoteypes.

Wagwaan…Tommy’s video reminds me of Jamaican humor..Back in the days, a Rastaman went to England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and was boarding one of the double decker buses. Downstairs was full so the
conductor sent him to the upstairs.
Seconds later he was seen coming out of
the bus so the conductor asked,
    "what's wrong?" The man replied,
" Yuh tek bia man fi fool? Yuh no see say no driver no up dehl” meaning you take this man for a fool. You didn’t see and say there’s no driver up there 🤣🤣.
