The level of football went a lot more competitive after the introduction of premier league. So imo the United team of 07-08 and 99, mourinhos Chelsea and Arsenal invincibles would absolutely destroy the Liverpool side of the 70s.

As a Liverpool fan I have always had a huge respect for the things Gary Nevillle says - He sees that little extra when he mentions the extraordinary Leicester winning the league with less Tools and Armour - wise indeed and I must agree - that has to be one of or maybe even the greatest ever sporting acheivement

    • @K2edg
      @K2edg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Honestly Leicester had no competition, they won it with 81 points 10 points clear of Arsenal with 71 points....... all the 'top four' teams finished in the 60's (very poor season indeed). The way i look at it the best teams win with some adversary (a title race) imho the 18-19 season was the two best clubs in recent history going head to head!! none of this win your home games and play for the point away (cough Arsenal...) this was a proper set up to win every game and the two teams won everything (all domestic trophies, Champions league and Club world cup) and finished 97 v's 98!! how many title races have you seen like that!!

For context, this is the points system when applied to teams across Europe:
    1. Ajax (1970-1973) - 30 pts

    =5. Real Madrid (1955-1958), Liverpool (1975-1978) - 23 pts
    =6. Real Madrid (1957-1960), Barcelona (2014-2017), Bayern Munich (2017-2020) - 22 pts
    =7. Inter (1963-1966) , PSV Eindhoven (1986-1989), Red Star Belgrade (1989-1992), Man Utd (2006-2009) - 21 pts

Coming back to this video in 2023, Pep's Man City team from 2020/21 - 2022/23 would be top of the list with 23 points.
    20/21: League win +4, League cup +1, European cup runner's up +2 = 7
    21/22: League win +4 = 4
    22/23: European cup win +5, League win +4, FA Cup +2, UEFA Super Cup +1 = 12
    7+4+12 = 23
When you then factor in that City also won the league in 2 out of the 3 prior seasons (2017/18, 2018/19), with one of those teams breaking the record for most ever points in a season (100), you realize that this is likely the greatest club team England has ever seen.

No Offence, If any of the top 8 English teams won all trophies available to them over the last three seasons they would be right up there as the greatest- it doesn't apply to City & Liverpool Only. If Liverpool wins the Treble this year, they'll have 21 Points - puts them joined 2nd - not too shabby considering they won nothing in 2018 and finished 4th in the league. City, however, cannot win the league this season - but if they win the rest: CL, FA Cup & League Cup it will also push them to 21 Points.

I would also bump up the FA/League Cups by a point (especially pre-2000).
Todays’ Man City/Liverpool dominance (aside from fitness) can’t beat the level of competitiveness of the 90s (when you had teams like Man United, Arsenal, Leeds, Blackburn, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Norwich, Newcastle, and Tottenham all competiting for the title).

It's mad when you look at the 2 Liverpool Teams included in this - during the "transitional period" in between the 76-78 & 82-84 sides there was another 3 year run where they won:
    78-79 - League Title
    79-80 - League Title
80-81 - European Cup and League Cup
Which gives 14 points using the system in this video, which is enough to get to sixth on the list.
Dalglish team in the 80's can get quite high as well, depending on how you pick the 3 years.
Man Utd have a couple of similar "lesser teams" during the Ferguson period that could finish quite high too:
91-92 - League Cup & Second in the League
    92-93 - League Title
93-94 - League Title and FA Cup
    And
95-96 - League Title and FA Cup
    96-97 - League Title
And either year before or after they finished Second in the League.
If they went with a top 20 instead you'd probably have close to half the teams coming from Liverpool and Utd (and the majority of them in the top 10).

Secondly, to say Liverpool could only win the UCL because other European giants were trash just goes to show how much of a hater you are. You only mention the 2019 final against Spurs (confirmation bias) to insinuate that Liverpool can only win CLs when other teams are doing badly but completely ignore the fact that Liverpool have won the UCL in the modern era against great sides. It is good bantz to be fair. But playing in the Premier league, with how competitive it is and champions league at the same time, it's almost impossible to win both. United are the only English team to even get to a champions league final and win the Premier league in the same season. All 4 UCL finals (winning 2) they got to, they won the league the same year. But Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool all reached UCL finals, (Chelsea and Liverpool won it) but never won the league in the same season. No other team that's won the Premier league, ever won the UCL in the same year. Let alone got to the final. It's incredibly difficult. So as much as a English side could have in the modern game, United did. But I think the main problem is Ferguson always wanted the league title.

It'd somewhat depend on which era that dream match would take place. It's a softer, almost no contact game now. If a defender's little toenail touches an attacker's leg during a tackle, the player collapses and VAR or the ruleset says it's a foul.
Can you imagine Raheem Sterling playing in the FA Cup, even in the 90's?
Rougher, tougher play style, looser ruleset and ripped up pitches. Yo-yo teams weren't able to dip into TV funds back then to maintain their surfaces.
If ANY last generation backwards team on this list played against current day Liverpool or the unplayable City in today's day and age obviously they'd be run off the pitch and half the team would be booked. It wouldn't even be close. It'd be a bit closer if they went back in time and played, though.

They mention Arsenal (1930's), Liverpool (1980's) & Man Utd (twice; 1990's & 2000's) being the only English top flight teams to win three league titles in a row. That is incorrect. It's interesting when Jamie talks at the end about Sir Alex not dominating abroad to remember that no team in that era dominated abroad in that era (from about the mid 90s to 2010 when United dominated the league). Perhaps the only team that "dominated" in that era were Juventus who reached 3 consecutive finals but lost 2. Real Madrid and Barcelona reached 3 finals (and won all) in a 15 year period. Manchester United and AC Milan reached 3 finals and won 2. It was a really competitive time with some truly exceptional teams.

70's Liverpool side are definitely the greatest english team of all time and Emlyn Hughes was the best player of that era(Proved by winning the most caps of any English player in the 70's). Bob Paisley was the manager of that team but the credit for that fantastic side has to go to Bill Shankly as he built it. Those 2 managers and Sir Alex Ferguson still not as great as Brian Clough though. What he did with a provincial Nottingham Forest side will never be repeated and that is the greatest achievement in the history of English football.

@marble hall Highbury grancanyon1970 Liverpool got English teams banned? It was an accident caused by trouble between two sets of fans. Only Liverpool and the English were punished by a corrupt and English-hating UEFA. Nothing has changed with UEFA still corrupt as ever and favouring Spanish teams in general. Liverpool were dominating Europe at the time and had done for years. A chance to ban them and they took it. It was a horrible tragedy caused by an accident that resulted from crowd trouble between Juventus and Liverpool fans. I have spoken to those who were there on the night. Both groups of fans involved were responsible just as much as eachother. The wall collapsed as a result of both sets of fans attempting to scale it. Not JUST Liverpool fans. It also killed Liverpool supporters. Not just Juventus supporters. Although, by bad fortune it happened to collapse more-so towards the Juventus fans. Blaming "Liverpool" is extremely ignorant and childish.

What amazes me about the Forest achievement is that the Liverpool that just had the 3 year period of success that scores the most points by this criteria. Arguably they got better during the years Forest won as the side changed personel for improved players. The signings improved, Liverpool had a 68 point season but Forest beat them to win League cups. Won Divsion one and knocked the Liverpool team who were the holders of the European cup out of the competition then win it that year and again the next. All after having being promoted from Division 2 the year before. It is an unbelievable achievement.

Listening to Monsieur Auclair is always a pleasure (huge fan of his regular appearances on The Football Weekly). He is quite eloquent and articulate for someone whose first language is not English.
Lastly, I feel that 1-4-2-4 system might unlock the best out of the superstars. Messi is in the 10 role with Di Maria on the right of a front three. Veratti and Herrera or Gueye in a midfield two.
