They were all excellent in their own ways:
*Scholes*:
Technically best, superb touch, passing, intelligence, controling team's rhythm... As well as goals especially in earlier part of career. Excellent composure and creativity. Team usually ran through him, most notably when needing goals and breaking teams down. Created the goals when things got tough.
*Gerrard*:
Best all-round game. Tremendous passing, drive, determination, tenacity, work-rate and consistent goalscoring. Tremendous long distance striker and good close distance finisher. Inspirational leader. One man army in many games. Scored the goals especially in moments when team needed him to.
*Lampard*:
Good passing both long and short, good intelligence, unparalleled goalscoring menace from midfield. Incredible consistency. Excellent box finishing (with both feet), very good long range shooting. Very strong mentally, big-game player. Longevity in his consistency and supreme levels of fitness and injury resistance. Consistently (made and) got goals and especially, important, tiimely goals.
Q. WHO'S BEST?
A. What are you looking for in your player? All three were key to their teams and controlled their team's play, scored and created goals.
All won major honours and played at the highest level for a very, very long time.

When they ask Terry about Chelsea not giving young players enough chances I thought of something. Terry will never be as good a manager as Zidane. While Terry only sees value in the players that contribute the most, and the rest become disposable, Zidane knows that every player can make a contribution to the team, no matter who plays the most (and he has the personality and credibility to deal with the egos). That's why Madrid under Zidane always has kind of a "B team" full of the younger players that always performs really well, because they know they have a chance to prove themselves (like Fede Valverde this season, for example); and, in the end, those "B players" end up contributing in important moments, like Asensio in the CL final against Juve.

All 3 players were world class but not sure you can really comapre. Gerrard for me is the best all round midfielder, but Scholes would control the whole game and could create a bit of magic (similar to Gerrard) but Lamps goal scoring record speaks for itself. All 3 were different and had different qualities.

I could listen to John Terry talking all day, for someone of his stature he is humble, honest and a better speaker than I thought he would be, no wonder he has been a top captain for so long. I have to say, I know JT is at Villa and honing his management skills there but.........he comes across as very sharp, perceptive, confident and knowledgeable. Carragher didn't interrupt him either when he spoke - like he does with Gary Neville. JT just commands respect from whoever he is in the company of and that in itself speaks volumes. He was a brilliant captain for Chelsea, possibly their grestest ever - right up there with Tony Adams at Arsenal - I'm a City fan too but I hope one day JT becomes a good PL manager, it would be great to see hm pacing up and down the touchline Mourinho-esque and bawling someone out.

Say what you like about Terry, that defensive diving header for England shows why he was so revered as a player, a defender and a captain.
I'm a United fan. Loved watching scholes. What He did mostly went unnoticed, a great player, great passed and could control the tempo of a midfield. As much as I hate to say it, so could the other two. They scored important goals at important times, as did Scholes, but not as often. I wouldn't pick one of them. They all had something special and were all as important to their respective clubs as each other.

You are very wrong about Scholes being deployed further back. Do you not remember Scholes, the attacking midfielder of the nineties and early noughties? He was still playing as a false nine on occasion when Van Nisterlooy was there. The thing that gets me is, Scholes in Europe, did not control games. He was dropped for so many big games by Ferguson and despite his awesome ability, he did not really have the huge impact on certain matches that Gerrard and lampard had. Man Utd fans can tell people to shut up all they want about the tackling but he was horrendous on so many occasions, although I miss him and Keane bullying midfields with their bullish defensive nous while still playing the other side of the game in such a elegant manner.
Now I have stated the issues I have with Scholes, but I still see him as the one of if not the best English midfielder of a generation. After debating the Scholes/Lampard/Gerrard thing for nearly a decade, I've decided that there really is so little between them when you look at how they affected a game at the very top level.
In the twilight years of there careers, Scholes wins hands down because of his style.
At the edge of he box probably the most exciting players in premier league history as a collective. This has been said so many times - Had England the right manager at the time, I think England win a World Cup or a European championship.
Stevie was more complete and a great leader. Scholesy was a genius on the ball, but not off it and Lamps was best finisher. Pity that England never found a way to get the best out of them in the same team. JT is an absolute gem and I could listen to him all day long.
Lampard and Gerard was better on the ball for me. Id never see scholes scoring and running past prime real Madrid/AC Milan players.

How many times did scholes win player of the season for the premier League, no infact how many times did he win player of the season in man utds awards. 0, not one award, no team of the years. He was very good don't get me wrong, but Gerrard and lampard were in the ballondor podiums, Toty multiple times. Gerrard has the most totys in the premier League. He was the best player in his position in 8 years, that's crazy. Scholes never did. Lampard played in 10,8,6 roles like Gerrard, still got the most goals for a midfield and doing what scholes did. Everton fan here. For me Gerrard was definitely the most well rounded out of himself, Lampard and Scholes. He could do absolutely everything on a football pitch. All three were magnificent players but Gerrard for me was the best. He would have won absolutely everything in the game if he had left Liverpool.
well you in full right to have your opinion in this but Scholes never folded during the big games. And i dont only mean the Leuge games but in the national team as well. Lampard and Gerrard acted like frightend Children as soon as they got the national shirt on them. Two HUGE players in their clubs but never lived up to anything at the biggest stage there is. As a liverpool fan i 100% agree with the fact gerrard would have won the lot had he left for a team like real madrid. If he was in the team now under klopp in his prime we'd have won the finals we were in and probably the league this year. Mainly because of the leadership he brings as opposed to his quality. The previous finals we got to we lost mainly because of lack of experience in the big occasion and mentality. The current liverpool squad is more equipped right now mentality wise and thats as important as quality.

I never have gotten totally used to seeing and listening to former players - even stalwarts of their respective teams - as these two, only talking about the sport.. For so many years they were just simply a huge part of what was happening on the pitch in my sport of football, every week!!.. Miss em still being out there, for sure!!

Scholes was the best at passing, Lampard was the best at shooting and imo Gerrard was a jack of trades as he was good all round so for that reason i'd say Gerrard but to each his own opinion!
Good points.........I was just thinking as an Arsenal fan. I'd say Gerrard was the best all rounder. Lampard got so many goals. Scholes was no better passer than Gerrard and he couldn't tackle. 1. Gerrard 2. Lampard 3, Scholes.

Gerrard's passing was as good as Scholes and long shots were as good as Lampard. But Scholes concentrated on being a ball playing midfielder, Lampard concentrated on being a fox in the box, Gerrard concentrated on being everything!

John Terry really broke down the loanee system well, it is imperative that a potential has experience to REALISE that potential. You can't expect a young baller to be great from the start unless you're a prodigy like Messi.. I agree with JT

Frank Lampard. His goal-tally is compared to striker's records. Scholes is a different player though. He's more of a deep-lying playmaker who dictated games from the centre of the park, and was brilliant at it. Lampard/Gerrard were more directly involved in attacking play, in which Lampard easily comes out on top.
Lampard is an example to young kids on how to get the best out of yourself. but in terms of ability scholes was just miles ahead of him, it probably was too easy for him in training so he didnt really have someone to aim for, was always just a given that scholes was best in training.. Gerrard had everything to be fair, very english in style but such a force.
Mn B as an example to kids Lampard for sure. I think Lampard is the only top player I know who actually got physically better in his mid 20s, can't think of another example? Footballing wise different players and hard to compare.
Why does it always come down to goals though. Terry has scored more goals than Iniesta. Doesn't make him a better midfielder or even player than him does it.
Poor example. Terry was a defender so he's main goal was to prevent conceeding goals. But the fact that he managed to kept cleansheets AND score more than 20 goals is outstanding for a centre back.
Lampard and Gerrard are primarily attack minded midfielders so their job is to assist/score goals and dictate plays. That is why they are rated by goals.
I think it is almost wrong to class lampard in the 05-08 chelsea teams as a central midfielder. He was pretty much playing as a number 10 who would attempt to get back to defend but barely and would be off again getting close to drogba. Not saying that was a bad thing, it worked in that chelsea system but to say he was a central midfielder scoring all those goals is a bit misleading.
Going back on that discussion Carra brought about Chelsea managing young talents, I'm looking at what Tuchel is doing now at Chelsea with the young players and it gives me great satisfaction because I know Chelsea won't keep losing players that can be influential in the next 3-5 years.

It's funny that people generalize the greats. They are all hard workers and they all have great talent or you wouldn't be talking about them.

there were players like that and that's why Mou used to be successful, he comes in at Man Utd and you have the most undisciplined players of all time with the likes of Paul Pogba and all these young guys who don't have their head in the game. They'll be unhappy with a coach who'll smack em around if they slack off. So it was either letting go of Pogba or Mou, Pogba was expensive so Mou was let go, its the players fault for underperforming, not mou's bad management

Scholes came out of retirement at 37 and nearly won Man Utd the league with his contribution in 2012. He has 11 premiership titles! And is very highly regarded by the elite of football. I spent years watching him dictate games like nobody else, was truly stunning to watch. But then you could get all on your high horse cos he couldn’t tackle, doesn’t have as many assists as you’d think and surprisingly wasn’t hyped by uefa/fifa/F.A like the other 2

Steve Gerrard you're literally in every comment where someone admits scholes was the best out of three. Give yourself a break once you're not convincing anyone especially with your profile picture and name it's easy to see you're quite biased. Oh yeah btw Toni kroos the other day picked scholes out of the three as the best just another great footballer who knew scholes was by far the most technically gifted and superiror to the other two.

Steve Gerrard i would say 2002-2003 he was definitely the best player in that Man U team. And yeah i get he was surrounded by class and Gerrard would have won plenty at Chelsea or Man Utd. But on the otherhand Stevie G played in some brilliant sides. Like in 2001, 2009 and 2014. I don’t like the myth of him being the big fish in a small pond at Liverpool

It's pretty mad really the amount of backlash by fans in this debate towards Scholes, when in reality when you look at the remarks made by all the great players of this generation such as Iniesta, Zidane and Xavi, all of which presumably have more insight and knowledge than any of us commenting, they say Scholes was leaps and bounds ahead. Even Toni Kroos said it last week when asked on Twitter..
TJ yeah Scholes is better than both, the man with less assists than James Milner and Thierry Henry. Definitely better than Gerrard and Lampard, without a shadow of a doubt

That means absolutely nothing, and even if it did, for every quote by a major player in praise of Scholes, you can find another in praise of Gerrard - from Zidane, Henry, Pirlo, Kaka, etc. - to make it meaningless. Google them if you like.

Gerrard was the most complete, Lampard was the best at getting goals but Scholes was the best of the three. His passing and vision was comfortably above both. Gerrard and Lampard were very good passers but at times struggled with their passing under pressure, and didn't have that same level of complex passing Scholes did. Scholes in his prime was incredible. His dribbling was so good when he was in his early to mid 20's. Add to that, he had a knack for scoring great goals. The only downside was his reckless tackling, which was intentional more than it was clumsy.

Lampard and Gerrard both passed well under-pressure, check Lampards assist to Ramires against Barcelona in 2012, produced an amazing through ball at an awkward angle. But indeed Scholes was the better passer, however shouldn't discount that Gerrard and Lampard were both excellent passers, out of the three, Scholes had the passing, Gerrard was the all round midfielder who had stamina and to control a game all by himself not to mention a hard worker, and Lampard was the composed excellent goal scoring midfielder who can produce a great pass, and was also hard working same as Gerrard.
