    Love Sony for making official teardowns like this. Seeing inside the headset, and the controllers in a separate video has made the $550 price tag look less painful. It seems really nicely put together, and user fixable years from now with a donor unit.

    That tear down videos is so good! This would typically be a big no no from a corporate company but it just shows how proud they are of the engineering (and rightfully so!). My first thought was can we upgrade the lenses and it looks like it 'may' be possible! Im itching to get mine and wonder if the fresnel will be that bad as no one has mentioned about them being bad (i think i read they are a modified fresnel design). Looks like a fantastic headset. Cant wait! Thanks for the video Sebastian 😀👍

      It's not possible to just strap a new pair of lenses. Putting right dimensions aside, each lense model has specific optical distortion, and the software correct it accordingly. The outputted image through another lense would appear distorted.
      Also, every part of the unit is tuned to give the best result possible: light intensity, focal distance, eye tracking correction from the rifraction, etc. The engineers that produced it probably know better than us how to create the best possible combination.

      @@albertodellavedova963 It literally is possible to just strap a new pair of lenses. When you say exchange the lenses I presume people aren't going to try and replace these with Pan Cake lenses?
    Sony, a world leader in optics, have custom designed these to provide the best possible experience for gaming, any other lenses would distort the image and/ or reduce the colour transmission through them. The main advantage pan cake has is to make the headset slimer but at the cost of light passthrough so they would have had to go for either a super bright LCD (a big no for HDR colours) or microOLED which would have pushed the cost closer to $1000.
    The other main advantage Fresnel lenses have is they offer the least amount of pupil swim so will lead to less image distortion and reduced nausea.
    That aside it was a fantastic teardown video and really showed how much thought and care Sony put into every aspect of the design. I especially love the fan that has a dual function of cooling the SOC and stopping the lenses fogging, just amazing design all round!

    • @blabla1177-r7u
      @blabla1177-r7u ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is another type of lenses, aspheric. They have the clarity of pancakes and don't reduce the brightness. However they have 2 disadvantages. They are very expensive and heavy. The only reason why everyone is going with fresnels is because they are cheapest. Varjo goes with aspheric, but you can see the cost of those headsets. Sony could of went with aspheric, but you already have people whining $550 is too much for PSVR 2, so they had to save money on lenses. The option for enthusiast users to spend some extra cash and get better lenses in headset would be great.

    • @SSJ3Tim
      @SSJ3Tim ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pancake lenses would certainly reduce the brightness significantly, and wouldn't make a significant difference to the weight since their primary advantage in that department is allowing the screens to be much closer to the lenses, whereas the PSVR2 design is fixed. So I agree that I don't think that would be a very good idea.
      However, when I replaced the Fresnel lenses on my HTC Vive with the aspheric lenses from the Samsung Gear VR, it was an enormous upgrade. I didn't experience significant pupil swim, though granted the FOV was less than that of the PSVR2 so it's riskier in this case. Meanwhile I've never experienced a Fresnel lenses that wasn't super blurry as soon as I looked away from the exact center of the rings. I'm aware that Sony has a patent on an improved Fresnel lens design, but I'm not optimistic that they have achieved anything comparable to the clarity of an aspheric lens.
      I suspect the point is moot, however, as I highly doubt you'd be able to modify the distortion profile calibrated for the original lens!

    • @blabla1177-r7u
      @blabla1177-r7u ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SSJ3Tim Can't wait for "all of the goodnes to come up" with Sebastian doing trough the lenses video. I have been watching MRTV video yesterday showing Reverb G2 trough the lenses. As both PSVR 2 and G2 should have around the same PPD and both displays use RGB stripe. So trough the lens video of G2 could give a good idea of what kind of clarity to expect. With a lot better colors and brightness on HDR OLED of PSVR 2 ofc.

I already took one of my Quest2 controllers apart to exchange the joystick and I barely managed to do so. This one would be a disaster for me. At least it would take hours of stop and go watching the whole system. But they deserve a lot of praise for the design. Fixing a broken camera will be possible without damaging glued parts, because there are none! Great video.

And this is partly because I don’t need glasses or contact lenses to use it (but I can also use it without removing my contact lenses) if diopter correction will be a basic function. Monitors will start to be outdated and die out in a couple of years, and the change will possibly be lead by the old and rich people with presbyopia this time and not geeks or gamers.

    Why you pronounce Fresnel lens so awkward?

    Pancake lenses in the PSVR2 would be a downgrade, lower brightness and less vivid colours.

      Just keep telling yourself that. Fresnel is already outdated. It’s sad to see this on a device so new that will not receive any hardware upgrades at all during its lifetime. Sad there is no option for wireless too.

      @@crashdude7589 I am enjoying quest pro as well. We will just let the Sony fans have their moment. I don’t notice any ghosting or any problems in the quest pro that they act like they are fixing with fresnel lenses.

      Quest pro and played the PSVR2 last year.. the big downside to the PSVR2 is the lenses. My pro looks MUCH clearer and much bigger sweetspot. Saying that PSVR2 still is nice with its OLED.
