Maynard has NPD (narcissistic personality disorder), he sings about it this and many other songs. This song is about his relationship with his ex wife.

These guys literally changed everything i knew about music, their time signatures are captivating and lure you in like a fish on a hook.. you could play Opiate all the way to Fear inoculum and be memorized for hours. They have been my favorite band for the last 25 years. It's fun to see younger generation see what we the Tool army have tried to tell you about how good they're.

🤘🌀🤘Tool’s entire catalogue is all bangers, imo. I’ve been a huge fan since I heard their first EP Opiate, and I’ve seen them live 6 times. Much like Pink Floyd, you have to listen to their music with headphones to fully appreciate all the intricacies in their music, particularly anything after their second album Aenima. Maynard’s other projects, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, are also worth a listen. Volto is another band to check out, which features Danny Carey, the drummer from Tool. Volto is a jam band. You should definitely check out the drum cam video for “Pneuma” to see what Danny does up close. He is one of the best to ever sit behind a kit. Yes, Tool is still making music, and if the rumours are true, should have new material within the next year or so. If you like wine, look for Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards. That is Maynard’s wine company. You can order it online, if that’s allowed where you live. Also, Maynard’s biography “A Perfect Union of Contrary Things” is a good read.

I love this song. I had the pleasure of seeing them play it live in Dublin Ireland in 2022. For that scream (26 seconds long) Maynard walked to the back of his podium , grabbed the rail, head down, took in a huge deep breath walked to the front, grabbed the mic and screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeamed. I’m going to see them in Birmingham , England in May. Cannot wait. Great reaction Spiral out 🌀

The way I heard it is the members of Tool wondered why no one was playing music they'd like to hear, then started making music they like.

Spot on analysis! Now that you started down this rabbit hole, you should start from the beginning. Every song is its own journey, and they are all great. If you start from the beginning, you will see the progressive growth within the band. From pure angst to enlightenment. First is the EP Opiate. Then Undertoe. ÆNIMA. Lateralus. 10thousand days. Then finish with Fear Inoculum! It's by far the best way to do it. Your favorite Tool song is the one you're currently listening to...

  • @iancollins65

Tool released the majority of their music in the mid nineties and early two thousands. The then took a 14 year hiatus from recording new music. Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer focused on his on his other two bands during that time. They made a triumphant return in 2019 with “Fear Inoculum.” The main reason I believe they waited so long to record an album had to do with their record contract, and they waited it out to be free from it so they could better control their music. They did tour during the 14 years, just didn’t release new material. They are also a band that will go a minimum of 4 years between albums, because quality is vital and they won’t settle for something that isn’t exactly what they want. The members are all in their 60s now I believe, but age has t slowed any of them down. They are one of the greatest rock bands of all time no questions asked.

An interesting paradox happened when music streaming services were created.
Several bands like Tool took quite a while to work through the legalities of putting their music on these services, meanwhile a younger generation abandoned traditional “radio stations”. That opened this alternate reality where a 10-15 year generation of people straight up missed out on bands like Tool and Metallica almost entirely.
Now we’re seeing this TH-cam influx of people being exposed to music many of us grew up on, for the first time some 20 years later, and being blown away.
I’ve been going down this long rabbit hole of finding more and more people reacting to Tool via TH-cam and I just can’t stop lol.
I can’t hear Tool for the first time again… but in some weird way I’m getting to relive it through the ears of others. It’s like seeing your child take their first steps… over and over and over again!

What you said around 10:10: Yes, that's the meter (or time signature) changes. They will string together e.g. one bar of 4, one of 5, then 4 again, then 7… before (maybe) starting over again

Tool has been around 30 years so they’re are probably the influencer to many bands and their time signatures go all over the place witch makes them TOOL

  • @t3nn1nj4s
    @t3nn1nj4s 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Tool uses a combination of odd or unusual time signatures (something other than 4/4), polyrhythms and time signature changes, most of which are hallmarks of progressive rock. Syncopation is a thing, and absolutely spices up more average rhythms, but I think what you were saying you liked is the unusual time signature. Their song Lateralus incorporates all of these and if you haven't reacted to that, I highly recommend it. Also, I know you did Pneuma already, but as others have suggested, there is "Vic Firth drum cam" video of the band playing that song live, and it's incredible. If you want to see Danny Carey's amazing use of polyrhythms, check that one out. Also, the next song that was about to play was 46 & 2, another absolute banger, highly recommended.

My Tool adventures started in 2000. Started out as a kid listening to whatever my dad had on, ( usually AC DC, Scorpions, stuff like that, and then i foumd a beastie boys tape in our home stereo, oof) was late to the game as well. They started my journey through metal and I haven't looked back since. Metal is a great ...tool.... in my melodic journeys. Drumnbass, hip hop, black metal, deathcore, some numetal at the moment. Saw Tool last week amd The grudge was awesome. He did the scream at the end, but for half the time. It was a beautiful thing.

Tool rarely plays 4/4 timing and that’s what you’re hearing /feeling. I think The Grudge is mostly 10/8 (or 5/4 or 5/8 depending on how you want to count… I count 10/8). Schism is a catchy 5/8 + 7/8 cycle. Lateralus has a 7/8 + 8/8 + 9/8 chorus. Sometimes the drums are playing a different time signature over the guitar and bass. You just never know what to expect 👍

Also, the thing you are referring to with the beats always landing where to aren’t expecting them to. That’s a Tool signature. They use many abnormal time signatures, and not just the standard 4/4 that most mainstream music adheres to. Because they are sometimes going back and forth between 2 different time signatures, you get that slightly off kilter rhythm. They are also very big on syncopation and polyrhythms, so even if they are in a more ordinary time signature you won’t easily catch it and it won’t sound ordinary. They also like to keep most of their rhythms in counts of 3 and 2 meaning that instead of just being in a 5/4 time signature where the beats with count 5 equal beat, they will count it out as 3 beast followed by 2 and it will seem complex that way 1-2-3, 1-2. Instead of 1-2-3-4-5.

23 second glorious scream. Important to know that the instrumental parts are written without Maynard who then builds the lyrics and vocals around it. Refrains how you hear them. If you're riding the Tool spiral, there are only 5 albums. You should now start at the start and take the full journey.

You can have stranger correlations than Tool with Linkin, Soundgarden (syncopation's there bigtime) or Korn. I remember listening to Purity Ring, trying to figure out why I really liked their two albums and I realized that Meghan's sort of flirtatious sarcasm reminded me of Mike Muir's sort of 'two fingers in the air' showboating in Suicidal Tendencies. Obviously they look and sound nothing alike but I realized that I imported something that I liked in ST into my listening experience of Purity Ring.

Tool is my number 1, but Sevendust. Truth killer album. My Tool thumbs up list is just as big as my Sevendust list spotify only. But you have to steer clear of the 90s. Sevendust was dope in the 90s but Truth Killer I cannot stop listening to. Just came out in July of last year. Happy to recommend songs from any of the two, Sevendust or Tool. Sevendust is a close 2.

Oh! on the beatbox side Tioneb. No love for Tioneb other than BBk in the videos. I don't speak french but his 7 decent tracks are decent. We all need Tioneb to come back. Watch just Tioneb in the battles. Granted he didn't beat Saro. But he was up against Saro. TIONEB!

My older sister decided it'd be funny to throw me into CPTSD by showing me the movie Jaws when I was seven. I know the feels brother.
