    Had an issue that had me stumped. Car would warm up normally, then after a couple of miles the temp would shoot up quickly to max. After switching off car, within 4/5 mins temp back down to normal. Start driving, within 0.4 mile it hits max again. All this with zero heat inside car. Replaced thermostat and radiator cap as they were cheap...... no change. Then, I remembered that when I bought car 2 years ago, the only thing I had to do was replace the radiator. You mentioned the breather tube from expansion tank, and I guessed maybe the rad leaking meant the previous owner used rad weld or similar. Sure enough, after blowing down the tube I shifted the blockage. The bore of the breather tube is 8mm ish but the hole in the bottom of the expansion tank is half that at least so I imagine it's really easy to block. Your video was key to me fixing the car, so cheers for that. I think I will flush the whole system to hopefully avoid similar happening in the future.

    Very helpful good advice, every bit of information is a bonus to people who have limited knowledge of these workings, thanks mate.

    Very useful video this. Our car went in for a routine service to include a coolant change and just hours later, it subsequently overheated, because as it turned out, some parts of this video hadn't been done by the garage. So this is very useful. Thanks for sharing. I have subscribed and hit the bell too.

    Glad you shared this, Just aquired a 2005 Cooper and it's got an overheating issue. Just finished cleaning out the overflow as it had gink galore stuck to the sides so bad.. had to use goo be gone and then rinse really well. Attempting thermostat change tomorrow.. but now knowing about the fan issues I'll give that a test too

    Thank you, your explaining and hands on with video, is one of the best I've come across, I've got steam coming from under my bonnet, but it's a 2005 Mini 'ONE' I hope the layout is similar to this model, I know it's not the head gasket, as I have clean oil on my dipstick, with no yellow cream on it.

    I have a 2004 mini cooper base, it was over heating so I changed out the thermostat and housing together, filled it back up, and opened the bleeder valve, once it got to temp, all the bubble went away and then all of a sudden it started erupting coolant like a volcano, got everything wet, it shut down and now have to jump it off and then it'll die shortly after and my dash started going crazy flashing everything and the tac stopped working so I shut if off amd not touched it since, any thoughts out there that can help please

    So this bleeding can be done all while engine is off and no need for heaters to be on to get coolant moving?

  • @joshuajackson5238
    @joshuajackson5238 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi guys I've got the issue of water coming out of the top of the expansion tank however the fan does work ? It only does it if the car is sat still and the heaters go hot and cold ?

    Great video with lots of info. Not sure if it help on my case. I have 2005 Mini One, 1,6L. The thermal meter on the dashboard showed today that engine is overheating (took it to the max). When opening the hood fan is going on full speed but the engine itself is not any warmer than usually (I mean you can touch it and it just warm). Nothing is boiling over either. Same time the air that the system is pushing in the cabin is not hot, just "warmish". Suddenly the thermal meter drops to half (normal) really fast and the cabin starts to get really warm/hot air. It did this couple of times today. I was first thinking thermostat or air in the system but the while going through those symptoms the engine itself isn't that hot that you couldn't keep your hands on it and it isn't boiling the coolant water out.

      Have you bled the system out of interest? Sounds like an air lock from your explanation..

    • @theminigurus4299
      @theminigurus4299  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Otherwise I would be tempted to replace coolant temp sensor if it’s giving incorrect voltage to the ECU the fan will kick in permanently as an overheating fail safe and in turn bring the engine temperature down dramatically this then will reduce temperature in the heater matrix too. But sounds to me more like a bad airlock somewhere.

      @@theminigurus4299 I haven't done that. I'll try that tomorrow morning. I hope it helps.

    Hi, i know this vid is older but ill coment eather way , maybe some one will help. So my temp guage shows normal teperature , but the heater matrix heats up very bad, eaven my shoes gets hot after driving it for a bit.. coolant is not leaking , radiator is new, radiator fan is new , heater matrix is new, coolant cap is new.. after changing the coolant the system was bleeded.. i dont understand why the matrix gets this hot.. does this mean engine is overheating? Or it was bleeded badly and there is a airlock? Well the guage shows normal so i hope it is not overheating. Its summer now so i turn my ac on its ok in the car but my feet is burning because the plastic where the matrix is is untoutchable , very hot... when i open the hood engine is warm to touch a little bit to hot to touch side.. can this be a thermostat too? I doubt because the radiator hoses both in and out get hot after runing for a bit.

    Thanks for this video mate massively helpful, I've recently had the head gasket done but was still seeing overheating when stopped in traffic, I thought it might be airlock or a leak somewhere so I put some k seal in the expansion tank and topped it up (I used blue coolant but there was red in there, I know now thats the wrong thing to do from researching online). Anyway the coolant in the expansion tank is now an opaque light blue colour and the level never changes, alsowhen left resting there is a white layer of something on top of it. Also seeing some smoke from the radiator (I think), any ideas? Thanks in advance.

      Mate, that sounds a complete mess. Get a 5 litre g12+ OAT Mannol coolant for about £10 via eBay and do a complete flush following these guys with the small expansion tank blowout pipes etc. Bleed off and drive it a few days. Having K seal and 2 types of coolant mixed after a head gasket change. Geez, couldn’t you just take it back to the garage?

    • @arniesmith9983
      @arniesmith9983 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaNa-wj8tw Thanks for the advice, you're right it's definitely a mess. WRT taking it back to garage, the guy who did the head gasket just didn't do a good enough job (obviously because I still have issues) and frankly I just don't trust him to touch it anymore lol, I will be taking it to a mini specialist soon but just trying to tide it over in the meantime without causing too much damage
