    Hi Ian hope you are well, the in camera audio was okay, ideal for quick video without the faf of external Mic's etc. To be honest I never do anything to the audio, as I don't really know much about audio editing, I have experimented with a smartphone as an external recorder.
    Best wishes stay safe Jon.

    I think for a cheap camcorder Ian vision and sound was very good! 👌

      Yes, it’s not too bad Paul. Considering no ‘proper’ mic was used. I did the same with the Sony ZV-1 yesterday and tbh, it was that much better!

    Brilliant work, Ian. I believe that I am going to get one of these cameras for knock-about work and "brainless videography" (a perfect fit for me!) Cheers, Russ

    I bought a cx405 how do I block the wind noise?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Make a fluffy with elastic straps to put in front of the mic covers on the camera? In post, cut bass. These cameras aren’t great in wind tbh.
      Try shading the mics with your hand.

      I used a really cheap package - Movavi to edit the video and the Excellent Audacity for audio. I always use the smallest editor needed because there really is no need for overblown editors for most stuff. A lot of people have posh, expensive editors and they barely touch what the editor does because they don’t need it in reality.

    Impressive what you can do when you know what you are doing! Do you EQ your audio within your video editor? Thanks

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Philip. No. I rendered the audio track only on my editor. Then imported it into Audacity (Free and Excellent) Then I convert it to mono and do all kinds of tricks to tart the audio up.
      Fact is, if the frequencies I boost or whatever aren't there in the first place, EQ won't bring them back, but the fact is, the Sony does have the low end but at a lower volume!!! So it just needs a little boosting.
      The copying of a track and merging it with a really heavily noise edited track is a trick that I learned from Soundspeeds. It really does help in difficult situations and that's the thing with video, the audio part is so often a repair job when you've just grabbed a shot!!
      With audio editing, it's SO easy to overdo it and not realise until the next day, so I tend to make quite small adjustments most of the time.

    I have no idea what EQ is. or what you did. Sorry, clear as mud

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Equalisation. For people who don’t know what equalisation is, tone. Treble Mids and bass control but equalisation has more frequencies to adjust, so bass is divided into smaller segments, as are the Mids and treble. So EQ is short for Equalisation which is a glorified tone control.
      Basically, I used noise reduction on my editor.
      Equalisation to change the tone.
      A strong noise gate on my editor to cut noise between silences. (A noise gate puts silence between every sentence)
      Added a very small amount of room sound, recorded separately to fill in silences made by the noise gate. (Sounds more natural with room sounds)
      If audio is really noisy, it can be really hard to remove the noise and retain the ‘naturalness’ of the sound. The editing in effect is too much for the sound that you want to hear. So I heavily edit the sound which damages the sound of my voice and then slowly bring up the original recording to ‘merge’ with the heavily edited version. You are left with the edited version being ‘filled’ in at a low level by the original version which makes it sound a bit more natural, with the noise down.
      It’s not really a thing for someone not knowing how to edit in all honesty.
      I wrote the steps and order of what I did in little numbered boxes at the bottom of the video. If you don’t know what the terms mean, if you want to edit audio in the future, you will need to know them.
      EQ or equalisation
      NR or
      Noise Reduction
      Noise Gate
      Ambience
      Terms commonly used in audio.
      There’s a bit more mud for you.

    Have you ever noticed hearding the Lens Focusing in the Mic feed? I get a lot of weird zm zm zm sounds. I'm assuming it's the Auto-Focus?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of them, I hear the zoom I think, but not been aware of autofocus. Probably because I don’t move the camera around a lot most of the time.

    • @TheVirakahScale
      @TheVirakahScale 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iancraig That's fair. I move around a lot when I talk, and I do art videos so there's always a traveling focal point.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only way to get rid of it is to use a separate recorder like Zoom h1n and sync in post. Outside, you wouldn’t hear it, but in a quiet environment there’s nothing you can do. Many cameras do this if you use autofocus. You could also try closing the aperture down for bigger depth of field and fixing the focus on a mid point.

    what type of factory internal microphone is your camera equipped with, omnidirectional?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I’m not sure what it is! It is described as a built in ‘zoom’ mic whatever that is …..

    I don't understand. If this video was recorded with the 405, and it only supports 1080p, how can the video be in 4k?
    Sorry for the stupid question.

      It was shot in 1080p but rendered in 4k for TH-cam.

    Which camcorder has the best audio? Thinking of getting one to do band/gig videos. Don't want to buy a lot of outboard stuff, so looking for an all-in-one with good audio.
    Good video. Thanks.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, all Sonys tend to have nice audio. For band/gig audio, you’re going to need less sensitive mics because the sheer volume can’t be tamed easily by sensitive mics and you end up with distortion. Noise from camera preamps won’t be a problem.
      So choose a stereo mic with attenuation. You will most likely need to turn the camera input gain to its lowest setting. I use a Sennheiser mke440 but a cheaper option might be the Rode stereo mic. Both sound good.
      Be careful with the cheaper camcorders … no mic input or a mic input with no coldshoe. I use a more expensive ax53 which is superb for show recording. Portable and quick to use. For more serious stuff though, I use a mirrorless with a very open lens F1.4 for low light. Be careful of massive changes of stage lighting. It can dramatically change very quickly and ruin your footage!
