Back when I bought my CX405 I did this too. I can give you one small piece of advice. Having done this, the "spare battery" will drop out easily when you open the battery cover. You might want to add a very small piece of take to the side of the battery to slow it down when it drops out. That will also reduce the rattling of the spare battery.
I am mind blown. I originally bought this camera when it came out and it broke last year but, since I like this camera so much, I bought another one and now I have a way of carrying both batteries easily! Thank you!
@@MikesWorld1 I left my CX405 in the car today 😕. Now the screen is all lines. I guess I have to buy another now. I just got another back up battery in the mail today and that's when I realized my rookie mistake
That’s amazing! I’ve been using a CX405 for years and I had actually noticed the second battery compartment, but wondered why it was permanently blanked off and inaccessible. Very strange design - that space could have been used to accommodate a higher capacity battery, or they could have just made the camera slightly smaller.
I glued a filter step up ring on the front of the camera around the lens so now I can use filters on the front of the camera like a circular polarizer or ND filter
That would be nice to have. I'd like to shoot at if 50 or 60 shutter speed . . . but daylight blows it out. Need an ND 64. Can you share a link here to what you bought?
Buy a variable ND filter so you can rotate it to the density you want. There is a video on Product Reviews TV channel here on youtube pertaining to modifications of the CX405.
This is pretty amazing. Finding extra storage in my house is impossible......but in my camera? Wow (Just posted my first video using this camera. I recommend them also. The zoom feature is very gentle and makes a world of difference) tHanks for the video
The USB cable that tucks into the hand strap, doubles as the DC connection to charge the camera. It can power the camera via DC power BUT it depends on the power output of the adapter it’s plugged into. As an example, my truck has a 3A output USB port. If I connect the camera, I get a message that the camera can only be used in playback mode connected to USB power. If I connect to a battery bank with a 2A output, the camera works fine powered on DC.
That's great as I am looking at checking one out soon to use as a dashcam and we already have a Sony RX100 III which uses the dame size bat and we have two so thanks for posting and how's it holding out today 12 June 24 - Hope you have a great day. Cheers Glemm v from NZ
Thanks for the video, good info. I am considering getting one of those due to your video. Can this camera use sd cards, or does it take micro sd cards? if it uses micro, do I need an adapter?
Yes, I can do that but I went over all the settings in my review of the camera. Sony CX405 Camcorder Unboxing and Review th-cam.com/video/7HjZLmt-pJ4/w-d-xo.html
I attempted this method of removing the spacer (unscrew + pop out), and what other channels recommended (do not remove screw + pry at corner), and I found the latter far more straightforward... I simply could not go ahead with the "popping out" without fear of breaking plastic components
Do you know if this camera requires periodic firmware updates? I did not see anything about it online or in the manual. Some goofy things are occurring in the menu: for example, not finding things like factory reset for one. What is demo mode? I saw something briefly mentioned in another tutorial (comment section) but can't find anything about this either.
Be careful, the extra battery kind of rattles around and makes rattle 🐍 while filming. I might glue some sponge to the bottom ends of the batteries, see if it goes away . . .
This camera has been a nice little gem. Picked it up a few years ago and it's still producing videos that are better than my current gen iPhone

Great tip! I always make sure the camera is upside down when I open the door. You do get some rattle from the spare battery. I’ll try your tape trick.
good point and as i plan to use it as a dash trips for our road trips nothing worse than a rattle next to your ear. Cheers
Hey, this is slick. Had no problem popping that spacer out.
Bought one of these for $170 "open box". Condition is like new! Great camcorder and easy to use. Thanks for the video

My mind was blown too when I found this. I will often go through two batteries at my kids sports events. It’s a game changer.

Just followed your instructions and did this. Great advice. Thanks!
amazing discovery man, thank you for sharing it

Yikes, I didn't even realise there was a USB cable slotted in the handle. I was spending over an hour trying to find out how to charge it. Thanks !!
Thanks man, this was very helpful 🎉
Glad I could help
Thanks for good information
Welcome
Very cool, thank you.
Thank you Mike, it works!
Awesome! Thank you!

I watched your video. Looks good.

Coming from you that carries street cred.
Merci Buckets! tHanks for stopping by!
I noticed the component next to the battery but never thought it’s an extra battery room, thanks for the information
Glad to help
Thank you ❤

Any reason they removed the dc power port in the recent year or two on this model. Or did I miss it?

From Portugal...thanks
You're welcome!
Hopefully you can help me, whats the power adaptor output, can I charge the camera with a old phone charguer?
The AC adapter you plug into needs to output at least 2 amps.
nice im looking for this.
Glad I could help
I have one of these camcorders. Saw the extra battery space. Couldn't figure out how to access it.
It's a game changer.
Kind of stupid what you need to do to access it.
Thanks for the video, good info. I am considering getting one of those due to your video. Can this camera use sd cards, or does it take micro sd cards? if it uses micro, do I need an adapter?
It’s used MicroSD cards and you’ll need an adapter or microSD card reader to use it with a laptop
So cool! Also, I like the fact it will run off a USB power bank!
Yep, I have a video posting soon showing the power bank I use with this camera. It will run the camera for 15 hours straight. It's amazing.
Hey Mike that was cool. Can you do a video also for the best settings maybe in the future thank you for hidden feature

Hey Mike! That’s great though I’m afraid to try I might break it. Question about the micro SD. Is it true it doesn’t work above 64g?
The manual says 64G is the limit. That's about 5.5 hrs rec time according the the setup screen.
Correct. Cards only up to 64GB work
I actually just bought this camera.
I put in a 128gb micro SD and it works perfectly fine.
I attempted this method of removing the spacer (unscrew + pop out), and what other channels recommended (do not remove screw + pry at corner), and I found the latter far more straightforward... I simply could not go ahead with the "popping out" without fear of breaking plastic components

Nice video. I think I'll get one.

Demo mode is for stores when they have one on display. You should never have that on.
@@MikesWorld1 I'm trying to find it in the meu. I bought a demo and wish to turn it off
Now that this camera is modified, is it still waterproof because it is originally supposed to be waterproof
This camera is NOT waterproof.
Why on earth would they do it like this? Either have it be simple to use, or make the camera even smaller by not having that compartment at all.
I've owned this camcorder for something like 8 years now, and i am just finding this out. thank you so much!
Glad I could help!

Interesting. Mine doesn't rattle.
