Thank you. I'm glad you found the videos useful. There are too many people with DSLR's out there who don't know how to get the best from them and continually produce poor pictures on them because they often don't know what settings to use really. They also tend to settle for just one lens. Camcorders offer a big zoom lens and much more user friendly. Plus the battery life is brilliant and they don't get hot! Lots of advantages.
@@iancraig yeah.. and not to mention about overheating and 30 mins recording limit. hahahaha.. Camcorders are just easy to use, and fun, and super light weight. Thanks a lot! I enjoyed camcorder contents from your channel and MarcusPix . 😆😆
Marcus is a real eccentric but what I love about him is his attitude to low budget gear. He totally focuses on the end result irrespective of the camera. Great attitude to have from someone who can afford any camera he likes.
Super video, and I think you make the point very well that camcorders are very much overlooked these days. One point I would make is the ease of use compared to an SLR, and cost of lenses ! I've got both and find myself using either my Sony camcorder or the Panasonic V750 camcorder more often than not.
Spot on, Alan. They are incredibly quick and easy to grab a shot. The ease of use is a big thing when you’re out and about. The only thing that isn’t so good about the cheaper ones (and even more expensive ones) is the size of the sensor. I guess having a small sensor makes them easier for companies to whack on massive zoom ranges. I over demonstrated the zoom. It was too close and as seen on the video, it goes a bit blocky. So care is needed with the small sensor size. However, comparing them to the mini cameras like GoPro for general videoing, they stand up really well and honestly, while I was out in the sun, I could see the screen easily while videoing and had a little more control over the exposure. They also record forever and don’t seem to overheat. So they have their uses, but I think they have dropped out of vogue and as someone mentioned to me in a comment ... ‘middle aged man with a camcorder’..... At least he was calling me middle aged! I’m 66, and don’t really care about my image!!
@@iancraig Ian, Ive got some extremely cheap (from China)and unusual lapel mikes that im sure you would find interesting. you can e-mail me directly.. albourn@gmail.com
Probably. But if you have to use an editor to string it all together, might as well adjust the colour too. Most cameras will produce a ‘flatter’ result so they are able to cope with varying lighting conditions. Then you can tweak to taste later.
What editing software do you use and music track I'm thinking of starting I know nothing about vlogging but take photos with my smartphone. I'm interested in the Sony CX450 it's brilliant for me it would do everything I go hiking and camping and having a plug-in mic socket makes it even better. Keep doing video on this low cost camcorder like you say you get a lot for you money. I do like the Sony zv-1F but out of my price range I could get filters a sun screen tripod etc and have it in my pocket. Please reply to my question about editing software for beginners. Are there any that are really free and for complete beginners and how easy it is to get it on TH-cam is that free. Thank you God Bless Colin Bowers
Hi Colin. I can’t remember exactly what I was using for this one. I tend to revolve around a few, one no longer available from Sony. The thing about software is that so many recommend these massive programmes that have a complex learning curve and some cost a lot or you have to subscribe. I hate all that and just want something simple and fast. I don’t need bells and whistles software so I use Magix Movie Studio mostly at the moment. They’re all pretty much the same thing tbh and a lot more important are your videoing and editing skills in the way that you put videos together. The software has no bearing on that. Some of the free editing packages are too basic, but I find Magix a nice mix of dead simple with basically useful editing features. Nothing special, but then, for me, the video content is more important than any software. A long while back, I used to video with NO software involved, other than a free stitch together programme. It’s a great discipline because you learn to plan and take shots with the video in mind. I still do that now. Many people talk about taking a ton of shots and cutting as much as possible in the edit. I rarely cut a ton of shots out. I just don’t take them because I learned way back to plan. I use Epidemic Sounds for music or I record my own music. I’m a retired musician. Sometimes I want to Taylor exactly for my video and other times, just backdrop stuff. These are the cheapest cameras I use, so don’t expect miracles. They’re ok. They do benefit (like most cameras) from sharpening in post. Dead easy to use though and fast to get shots.
Ian I've just ordered a Panasonic HC W850 camcorder after watching your videos its got two cameras on it for vloging with picture in picture option I will follow your vlogs to learn to set it up and use it properly thanks again 😀
@@iancraig I've brought it filming trains 50 x zoom 90 x digital zoom like the duel camera function going to watch your vlogs on setting it up and look at buying the tripod on your sony video the suri one and the concept rings I've got a gorilla tripod coming with it
I guess the AX53 has not been superseded yet? I had it and sold it a couple of years ago thinking that I wanted one that could do 4k 60fps. But, I missed the AX53 and don't really need to do 4K60fps so I bought another one recently. The image quality on it is outstanding!
No. Never superceded. The ax100 or ax700 are a good step up from it. The ax53 only does 4k at 25fps. Really annoying because I often video at 4k 50fps and render at 1080 50fps for Tv. On TH-cam, recently I’ve been videoing in 4k 25fps and rendering at 1080 25fps. Gives me zoom capability without moving the camera.
@@iancraig I have the USA version of the AX53 which can do either 4K 24fps or 4K 30fps. I'm happy with that although would be nice if it could do 4k 60fps. It however can do 1080p 60fps so when I want a faster fps, I will use that. And, yes, the ax700/100 don't go wide quite enough like the ax53.
I liked your video and would like to ask your advice, I'm undecided between the 405 & 450. The purpose of the camera is to film my son's football matches. What do you advise me? Thank you very much and continuation of good videos📽
That really depends on whether you want to use a mic or not. They are basically the same camera, but the 450 has a mic input. So you could use a lavalier or get an L bracket and mount a shotgun mic. So the 450 offers better sound via an external mic. I think the 405 is slightly quieter on internal mic than the 405 which seems to pick up mechanical noise from the focus system.
Excellent video! I am considering using a few of these Sony camcorders (cx405) to vlog but MAINLY... to capture low light interior/exterior musical performances. There are very few demo videos of these cameras showcasing their low light capabilities... Is this because they aren't very good at it? It seems the larger lens would allow them to perform better than a cellphone camera... and... if bad, how bad?
The Sony camcorders aren’t brilliant in low light but they do remarkably well with such a small sensor. I have videod stage shows using them and as long as the stage is fairly bright, they work fine.
Ciao Ian, thank you ofr your excellent video: i'm using my Xiaomi mobile until now, to record my TH-cam channel, but now i want a Sony: i make video on my garage-workshop, showing my machining on lathe and milling machine (the light is ok ), i was thinking about the Sony-CX625, do you believe that is ok for the purpose? Thank you in advance, cheers from Italy, Alberto.
I have 4 camcorders and without a doubt, the cheaper ones do really well and do keep costs down. The only thing is with the cheap ones, there is no audio input, so you are left with on board mics or a separate recorder. So cheap cam £200. Recorder £90. However, excellent results even on internal mics which I tweak in post. The bigger camcorder is expensive, but very good. Excellent for beginners because it is actually hard to get a bad exposure! I flit between the camcorders and the GoPro 5 and 7, and of course the Osmo Action and Pocket. I also now have a Sony ZV-1 which is an amazing camera. I tend to choose according to what sound I want and where I’m going. (Visibility and all that because some people play up to cameras outside on the street) Last week, I was photo bombed twice. One shot I couldn’t do again. I was shooting stuff for tourist board and one of them was quite annoying because I couldn’t easily do the shot again. (Kitesurfers) The best compromise in my camcorder collection in the CX450. Great picture and it actually has a mic input. No mount for a shotgun, but great for lavaliers or just put it onto an L bracket to hold a mic. That is a cheap setup for sure. You also need to learn how to expose for good results though. Generally, I find that they expose too high so I end up lowering it. Same for the GoPro. I tend to underexpose by .7 or 1 stop depending on the weather. GoPros blow out the picture very easily and so do the cams!
Great video, i’m undecided between the 450 & 625. I will be using a tripod for distance shots and wondering if the stabilisation remains active whilst on the tripod causing the ‘jitters’ like some bridge camera’s do. Any advice on this and which would you advise?
The stabilisation doesn’t seem to do anything while on a tripod. I haven’t been aware of jitters. To be honest though, if I have them on a tripod, I switch the stabilisation off most of the time.
Difficult to choose. Panasonic also make some nice little cameras. I stuck with Sonys just because I am so used to their menu systems and all four of my cameras arevery similar in the way that they’re set up. Ease of use is a major factor for me because when you’re out and about, being pushed to get footage quickly, you just don’t want to be playing with menus. I will be demoing the cx405 next video.
That’s interesting. I saw one in a local shop and didn’t notice. It seemed similar to the cx405 in build. I mean really, they are cheap cameras so I guess we can’t expect too much. If I’m honest, even the cx625 is quite plasticky too.
This is a quick overview of 4 camcorders from Sony with a cx450 demo. In the links below, I have listed what can still be bought from Amazon. Please use them if you are considering any of the bits I’m using since they are afilliate links and help my channel and cost you no more. Sorry for the lobster look at the start. I was sitting under a red umbrella with the white balance set of the daylight and didn’t want to do it all again because being old, I’d never remember what I said!! I choose my camera according to what sound facilities I want so ... Cx405 with a separate recorder. (Very light and mobile) Cx450 with lavalier. (Light. No hotshoe on camera but there is an input) Cx625 with shotgun mic or wireless mic. Also lavalier. Ax53 mostly at home because of its size and weight. With any mic. Often use studio mic or shotgun mic. Adapter rings - amzn.to/3fmf59Q Sirui tripod - amzn.to/33fTVb2 With video, the more I develop, the more I realise that it’s not just the picture, but the story that is important, so I made a demo using the cx450 just sitting in two positions by the local pond to demonstrate how a zoom lens and a reasonable camera produces such a wide variation of shots from a fixed position which makes for a great memory video after being out and about or on holiday for instance.
Hi ian.. Hope your well, i have a question for you if you dont mind? I saw your audio review pf go pro.. All the built in processing issues when using a mic.. And i was wondering if the sony cx 450 would have any similar audio input issues when using an outboard mixing desk into the camera.. Im looking at recording live music with direct audio into the cx 450..any info or help would be awesome ian as im really interested in buying this unit after watching your excellent review, cheers 🏴
The Sony input is pretty good for audio. It's a 3.5mm stereo plug so you can send stereo in for music. So whatever you output from to 3.5 will be great. If you need a long run, it 'might' be noisy and pick up rf because it's not a shielded xlr, but you could run a long xlr to xlr and put a short patch into camera if noise is an issue.
Hi there! Ive been consuming all your camcorder videos because your reviews and demos are so useful! Im going on holiday in a few months and am juggling whether to buy the CX405 or CX450 to record the experience. Thanks again!
The model that im getting is CX-115E. Its going to be my first ever camcorder. Are you familiar with this model? Thank you for your content, regards, Lee.
Hi Lee. No, I don’t know the cx115 at all. It looks similar to the cx405. The nice thing about camcorders is their ease of use, allowing you to really concentrate on videoing without too many technical worries.
@iancraig I will take a look at that one, too. I am just trying to understand the fps and iso settings. You detail it very well in your videos. I'm sure I will master it when I get hands-on with my model. Thank you😊.
On most of them, there is a choice of 25 or 50 fps. 50 is smoother but 25 is more cinema film like. The important thing if you use 25 is to set the shutter at 1/50th or it will look jarring and move the camera less. With 50, it’s way less touchy and you can leave the shutter on auto really. Use 25p or 50p, not 25i or 50i. That is an old tv format for showing smooth pictures on tv at (effectively) 50 1/2 frames per second. Most people use p these days….. progressive video, not interlaced. The camcorders are great for learning video technique. Quite different from stills.
They’re not the sharpest of cameras Paul, but basically ok. The best of my bunch is the ax53 but you pay more for it which isn’t surprising. That one is also the sharpest.
Amazon sell step up rings. The Cx625 has a 46mm thread so anything from 46 to whatever you want will do it. Just type in ‘46mm step up ring’ and choose the size you want to go up to. You can buy a whole set of them as well from Neewer for instance ….. amzn.to/3ew0Fd0
@@iancraig Brilliant Ian. I wiped out my CX450 in a monsoon and that only has a 37mm thread on it. I have a CX625 coming and that must be a bigger lense. Thanks for the tip. All the best Tim
Ian Great video. I currently own the cx405 which I use to video my daughter's soccer (football) games here in Florida. The problem is when it rains. I would like to add a step filter but there are no threads. That way I can add a rain cover without it falling over the lens. The cx450 would be a great idea. Can you tell me the size of the filter closest to the lens. Also do you get vignetting with multiple rings? Thanks for your videos.
The cx450 filter size is 37mm. The rings flare outwards so they don’t get in the way. You can glue one ring with a thread to the cx405 and then use the others as normal if you want. I would also put the camera in a plastic bag with a hole for the lens/filter. Held on with a rubber band just behind the lens for when it really rains.
I'll tell you what you shouldn't overlook the fact that the multi-port on the right hand side of most of those cameras can use a JJC remote control for the zoom and the shutter
Hi, I was looking for information about sony camcorders and your video was very helpful. Since you have the CX625 and the CX450, can you tell me if there is a recording quality difference between those models or if the only difference is the accessory shoe? Thanks again for your video!
The video quality is similar but as you say, there is the added Coldshoe mount on top. There is also a little more in camera control of the picture on the 625. Having said that for a dead cheap camera, it does really well. The only thing I would say is you need a mic or a lavalier mic with it. Unlike the 405, it does pick up its own mechanical noises so I always use a lav with it.
Yes it does Jeanne. There’s a little cover that you lift once you pull the little monitoring screen out with two sockets. One for headphone and the other for mic.
Hi Ian, thanks for the really information video! when you are using a shotgun mic, what mic do you use and how do you set it up? Does it link to any other interface?
Hi Chillie. I use quite a lot of different mics to be honest. Rode Videomicro, Rode Videomic Pro+, Deity D3 and D3 Pro, Sennheiser MKE600, Sennheiser MKE400 and 200 and just recently, the Deity D4 mini which is excellent. It just depends on what I'm doing. I don't stick with one particular mic. To set it up, I use an adapter that fits into the Sony hotshoe so the mic fits on and is raised. The Sony cameras only take 3.5mm plugs. I often use a mini recorder and a lavalier as well and sync both the shotgun audio with the recorder audio and go between them.
I am searching for a camcorder to record for my TH-cam channel. I am looking to improve video quality a lot. What of the 4 would you suggest, considering I want also to use it to stream live?
Without a doubt, the AX53 but you have to pay quite a bit for it. I did a live stream last night on my camcorders. It’s a bit rough but most of it is there. th-cam.com/video/1hLimmzbtZI/w-d-xo.html
@@iancraig thanks for your very fast response. I'll have a look at the video now. Do you think a previous version like a43 could be a good compromise or is it not worth it?
TBH, I’m not sure. There is also an AX33 (I think it ‘s called). The AX series are pretty good. www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-FDRAX33B-CEN-FDR-AX33-Camcorder/dp/B00WEIQR0I/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Ax33&qid=1607811028&sr=8-2
Hi again Ian.. Hope your keeping well, jst another wee question for u.. Hope you don't mind? What it is is my cx 450 no matter what I do or how I do it.. The music vids ALWAYS play 'choppy' when I play back in windows ten video editor.. They play fine in windows media player and on the camera itself... So I jst wondered if there may be something I can do? Would you suggest a different vid edit software as this is what I'm trying to do.. As in edit the work... Hope this msg isn't too much.. 🏴👍
Hi. It sounds to me like you may have a slower computer than necessary for video. You could try setting a lower bitrate on the Sony. I think there is a choice in the menu. If that runs well then it is probably the computer. In that case, go back to a higher bitrate and render as normal, just trying to ignore the choppiness. If the software does it, try using proxies. These are low res copies of the originals that the computer uses to edit, but switches automatically to the high res version for render. One programme that works well on slow computers is Magix Movie Studio. It seems to use less resources to run. Another giveaway for a slow computer is render time. If it takes a long time to render the video, your computer is slow. I use a newish laptop for editing. It just about copes with 4k 60p but if I slap in a load of effects, it stutters. So I make the video first. Run it to check and then edit/colour correct etc afterwards before rendering. In other words, just put the video together first before doing anything else in order to make it easier on your computer.
I tried your setting on the other tube. It look better. But I wanted a more richer contrast. I found it in the manual exposed. I live in Honolulu so it very Brite. But on the cv -430 same as that 400 how can you play with the exposure on the screen while filming. It has the small box and plus or substract but they are so tiny and don't seem to be working?
Wow, if I add sunset mode to your setting and with heavy contrast or exposed. I can get that orange in green transition in the coconut leaves. Only canon that old 500 could do it. The video is top notch now. I don't have to buy the Sony ax 100 I been wishing but that size it too much. I getting the rich black between the leaves and added the dark green that like a waxed shiny coating also beside a tiny Tange of orange when the leaves are getting old. That a very good video, as before it would as all my cam show it as green to brown as it age and drys. It look very rich and detailed, thank You go me to experiment, Sony menus look lame and hopeless but it can be used manually
Try spot focus & exposure. That way you can get the contrast level higher. Or Cinematone as a picture profile. Or turn AE exposure down. I think you want more contrast so just get the exposure down. I’m not sure what ‘sunset’ mode is ....
i'm torn between cx405 & cx625 bc them both have a vintage film aesthetic (1080p 60fps) with amazing zoom capability, and i don't really looking for the 4k one bc i've got my compact sony zv1 already which capable to do that
Hey Ian, I hope you can help me. I am filming mostly skate videos and I read many reviews and can't decide now between the cx405 and cx625. What would you recommend me for these purposes? Is there a big difference when it comes to stabilisation? I would like to add a fish eye lens from time to time and I would have to use tape to adjust it on the 405, but that seems to be the only con right now,..
The cx625 is a nicer camcorder and has the moving lens assembly for stabilisation. If you are skating yourself, I would use an Action 4. If you are videoing from the audience, then the cx625 might work well with its zoom but low light performance isn’t great. That’s because of the small sensor and it quickly becomes noisy. It’s a fairly cheap camera though so I guess you get what you pay for. Really, the ax33, 43 or 53 might be better. I use the ax53 which allows control over the iso or amount of gain so you can lower noise to some extent in camera.
Uso 1080p sulle mie fotocamere Sony a 50 fotogrammi al secondo. Non uso il formato Sony perché alcuni editor video non funzionano bene con esso, quindi rimango con mp4.
Hi Ian - may I ask what is the maximum length of recorded video the 405 or the 450 can record in one go? I want a small camcorder that can record a full hours (minimum) live gig without the file being split up (and the audio splitting up) - can you advise?
I think it will run as long as you like. I would plug it in though. These camcorders aren't like DSLRs with a 30 minute limit. Not certain how a very long video would record .... whether it would split itself or make a long video. Long time back, I used the 405 to record a show and I think it just went on and on. I used 3 cameras and jumped between them so didn't need a full video with one shot. For a gig, I would use a separate recorder for sound.
Great video Ian, I have a sony ax53 a great camcorder but I don't use it nearly enough. Liking the tripod can I ask what's the max height it extends too and would it support the AX53, when I do a piece to camera I sit at a table and I'm wondering if this would be suitable for putting the AX53 on stood on the table instead of getting my full size tripod out , I think I'll be putting one in my Amazon basket. The setup you are using for a lens hood can the same thing but used for the AX53 as I've been looking for something suitable. One thing I found with my AX53 is the screen's not good in bright sunlight, and the flippy door on the hot shoe cover makes it a fiddle to fit a non Sony Mic, I've got a little extension accessory also in my Amazon basket just waiting for the next time I place an order. Stay safe best wishes Jon.
Thanks Jon. The Sirui is fantastic. It does support the ax53. It’s not cheap but very substantial which is why I use it. It’s not the lightest because it is made from metal but actually, it helps with stabilisation because it counteracts the weight of the camera; especially when you hold it above the legs and extend them straight out, when I use lightweight plastic selfie sticks, they’re so light that the camera swings about! Extension is quite short. Only about a couple of feet but enough for a self shot. Further away, I just put it on the floor on its legs. If you get one, it’s a good idea to get some plates for other cameras. Two reasons.... they’re small so you don’t notice them left on your camera and quick to attach. But also, the replacement plates have a grip ring on them where the stick one needs a screwdriver to get it on tight so only really good for one camera. The extra plates aren’t that expensive, but it is actually a brilliant mini support. Oh .... I forgot, the adapter ring trick does work on the ax53. It works will all cameras that have a screw thread. The beauty of it is that you can slightly alter the lens hood depth to match whatever filters you might be using. I’ll put a link in my description to the rings. They’re great. Link is there now in my description. Thanks - you jogged my memory so the Sirui and rings are there now!!
@@iancraig Hi Ian Just a quickie, are the quick release plates a Sirui brand and only fit the T3-35 or are they a generic brand, as i'm just about to place an order Thanks jon
So Ian you would recomend the cx 450? By the way I've seen this model for astronomical price on Amazon at the moment? Cheapest at Argos at £219 but trying to get one from them as most of their stores are out of stock. Great review, Cheers just subbed!
Thanks for subbing Paul. The cx40 is a great little camera. It’s pretty sharp. Bear in mind that it only offers ‘semi-manual’ like all of the cx and ax range. That means you can only adjust aperture, or shutter, but not both. Having said that, the exposures are really very good so I tend to use it on shutter mode and allow the aperture to deal with exposure. Otherwise it has a menu thing to lower or raise the exposure if you want to. No coldshoe so it’s a lavalier mic camera really although there’s nothing to stop you using an L bracket for a mictophone. I think it’s a very nice little camera for home and vlogging because it’s also pretty small and light.
Thank you very much for your Video but i have a question. How is the name of the objective on the cx450? I thought I can’t put there on it and know I see it works ^^ Can you send me the link or the name of it?
And if i install the rings on it, could I put on the rings a lense adapter? Sorry for all the questions, but I can’t find the answers for it.. I’m a newbie
The cx450 has a screw thread on the front, so the rings can be screwed on like other lenses. The cx405 doesn’t have a screw thread but the 450 does. The filter thread diameter is 37mm as shown on the Sony specs www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/memory-camcorders-hdr-cx-series/hdr-cx450/specifications So any adapters with that diameter. I bought a set of stereo up rings and used them as a lens hood.
All of the camcorders except the really cheap one, the cx405 will take filters. None of them have interchangeable lenses because they already have a large zoom on them.
@@iancraig Hey Ian, sorry for bothering you again. Actually here is a request, can you please make a video on camcorder filters? Specifically for Sony camcorders.
Hi, I like your video about video camera. I see you have a very nice grip, so you can hold up your camera, do you know where I can buy this one? You have it under cx 450.
There is something rather nice about the Dogma 95 movement. Kind of compares with ‘minimalist’ music in a way although they don’t limit the amount of material that they use. There’s a lot to be said about ‘story telling’ rather than relying on effects. Straight forward with a focus on narrative and direction of the video or film. All too often these days, people worry about how to shoot with drones, effects, and how to get a video to look ‘glitzy’, when underneath it all, there is something lacking in the film itself. One of my real ‘hates’ on TH-cam actually is the way that some smack in a load of ‘b roll’ footage, normally in slow motion and that footage has nothing to do really with what the video is actually about. Kind of sticking in some glitzy filler with no real purpose. Normally, they think that they’re giving the impression that it’s this new thing ..... cinematic! I often go back to much older movies myself because they often tell stories much better than modern remakes. There’s a lot to be said for camcorders. They’re built for video and they actually do the job pretty well. More than once now though, I have had messages from people saying that they wouldn’t like to be seen out and about holding a camcorder. They associate it with tourism. They are missing a trick because these camcorders get the picture with a minimal of fuss, leaving you able to create a video that has some sense of direction rather than continually worrying about settings ....
Thank you so much for providing some very helpful information on these camcorders. I'm looking to get a nice simple camcorder, unfortunately the AX53 is out of my price range so I'm looing at either the CX405 or CX625 (CX450 not available here in Australia!) Is there much difference between these two (besides price!) Which one would you recommend? Thanks again
Thanks Maree. The CX625 is a more future proof camera in that it can take a microphone so audio massively improves. I generally ise the cx405 for a lower profile in public but retain a fairly good picture and the Cx625 when I don’t mind about having a higher public profile and want really good sound. If you do get one, try underexposing by half to one stop. They all have a tendency to bring everything up a bit high and highlights get pushed out,
@Laven The internal mic on the Sony cx405 would capture more of you as long as the camera is closest to you. The further away from you it is, less of you it picks up. For best audio, a separate microphone would work way better but the cx405 only has its own internal mics, so is a slight compromise. Sound is ok though.
G'Day Ian I know this is an old thread but I couldn't agree more with your sentiment over camcorders. I have 2 atm, an AX-53 and the AX-700. I'm also thinking about getting a Z280 later, a lot later (if they are still around). My thought originally when I wanted to do video's was "I want to record video, ergo I need a video recorder, not a still camera!" Haven't looked back once.
Hi Gins. I would love an ax700. Have been thinking about getting one for a long time now. Might do it one day. I love using the ax53. I think it's more to do with image. Younger people think camcorders are old hat, but boy, do they suit the job!
Up to a point they are pretty good. You have no control over the ISO though so once light really starts to drop, you will be introducing a load of noise, just like any other camera and these camcorders have small sensors. Pushing a cheap camcorder in low light conditions isn’t really the best thing to do since they’re not designed for that really. The ax53 is better than the others in low light though, but you pay for that; it’s a £650 camera. For low light performance (proper) I’m using an F1.4 lens into another camera. That’s unfortunately the case for all cameras. You need a wide lens and that’s it. Camcorders are designed for ease of use and quickness in operation. Especially these cheap ones. An F1.4 lens for my camera cost £350 just for the lens! You pay a lot of money for good low light performance really. Having said that, I can easily use these indoors with no extra lights and they do pretty well. Better I think than a GoPro.
I got the AX-53 simply because every video I saw that had been shot with it looked really cinematic. I don't use it often simply because of the stigma that comes with it.
Hi Hughesy. What? You mean the stigma of using a camcorder? If that's a problem then just think ... I would say that 50% to 75% of TH-camrs either don't know what they're talking about but are good talkers. An expensive camera DOES NOT make a good video. It's the story or the journey that catches people. I have no problems whatsoever with a camcorder. In fact, next week, I'm going to make a video with the cheapest camcorder I have!!
@@iancraiga middle-aged man with a camcorder... I have the a6400 on a G6Max gimbal and I feel less conscious carrying that around than a little camcorder. Its why I love the Osmo Pocket so much - best of both worlds!
Hughesy, I’m glad you said, ‘middle aged’. I’m an old man of 66 and have no problem with image whatsover! 😂 I love the Pocket picture but not that tiny screen. Impossible for me to read without glasses and my false teeth in.
@@iancraig I've got so many Jimmy-rigged setups for the pocket that I can virtually cover all my needs with just that one device (and a shed-full of accessories!) FYI, I'm 50 next year.
I like the Pocket too. Great picture for such a small device. I’m a glutton for punishment, I also use a GoPro Hero 5, 7, Osmo Pocket and Action....... All great in different ways.
I’m considering the Sony HDRCX405. The best deal I can get is about £200 in my country. My average recording is about an hour long and is in 1080/30, which I upload weekly to TH-cam. I use the main camera of the iPhone SE 2020. Is this camcorder still worth buying in your opinion?
I don’t know how good the iPhone camera is to be honest. One thing I have noticed with my phone is that the frame rate can vary by small amounts. The cx405 lens isn’t the sharpest, but then again, it only costs £200. Less than just a lens for my Canon. You can’t expect a cheap camera to perform like a pro camera, so I think that it’s great value for money. Good enough for TH-cam but I don’t know if it’s better than an iPhone.
@@iancraig Which format do you use to edit videos taken on this handycam, AVCHD or MP4? I ask because editing before uploading is an important step for me. Is the quality of 1080p on the mp4 format good enough?
On all of these cameras, I use MP4 at 50mps. 1080p is HD so as long as you’re not cutting in to the picture when editing, it’s fine. AVCHD can be difficult in some editors and footage won’t always play back smoothly with it. As far as editing goes, I always try to get everything right in the camera to avoid unnecessary editing. The worst thing is taking poor footage and trying to fix it in post. You have to remember that all of these cameras are 8 bit so pulling the picture around too much in post will affect the picture quality. Most cameras are 8 bit so it’s good practice to try and get it right in camera.
@@iancraig Since my recording session involves waiting for folks to get to the right scripture, I have to edit out the dead air. In fact that is all I do as editing goes, meaning, I spend no effort trying to make the recording look better. I’m not trying to get new viewers on TH-cam, but rather having a record of what I’ve taught for my congregation. Thank you once again for answering.
Great simple video. I'm a fan of Sony cameras too, and I'm looking for a cheap camera but one that lets me plug my Rode external mic. So I need the line-in and the cold shoe. Do you know any? I'm not looking for a pro-level camera, just one that let me connect my external mic, that's it. Cheers!
The Sony cx450 if you can still get it or the cx625. My own favourite is the ax53. A cheaper route is to use a separate recorder and use video editing software to sync it. I leave the recorder running and sync video to the audio track, cut the audio track and sync the left over track with the next clip. It sounds convoluted but it’s actually quite easy.
Yes, I do post-edit my videos, since I often record bellydancers in dance videoclips. But all my cameras are photo cameras, and I would like to add an actual video camera to the roster. My current setup is an A77II - with the Rode mic, an A68 and a small RX100 IV for handheld videos with smooth zooms, while the two alphas work on tripods. So I end up doing the sound sync anyways. But if any of my cameras is to be connected to the mic, I would prefer if it could be the video camera, since there will be times I will be recording with only one camera (like in a live show or concert, where I am taking photos and leave the video camera on the tripod alone). I will check on those two cameras. Thanks!
By the way, I just noticed I commented on the wrong video. The comment was supposed to be on your "The Cheapest Camcorder that I have - The Sony CX405" video, but TH-cam must have changed to the next suggested video before I noticed. Anyways, I checked on the cameras you suggested, but they are either too expensive for me, or lack the mic support. I will use the inbody mic I guess. The sound on the CX405 seems ok enough. Cheers!
I do the same myself. The on board sound is OK on the 405. Not as good funnily enough on the 450. I took a look at a couple of your videos and I think the 405 will probably work for you. Anything important, using a recorder is much better.
Hello once again! I stop by to let you know I have found a nice 2nd hand camera from Sony, but a very different model (one I didn't even knew it existed). I bought a used HXR-MC50. In fact, should be the MC50E but is really the MC50U (I guess the girl who sold it bought it in the US and came back to Portugal). But the recordings are nice, has a built in mic plus a dedicated mic and mic line-in when I want a better sound, and it lets me change every parameter to Manual setting, if I want to. From ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Focus, just about everything. I'm pleased with this camera, altough it has one detail I do not like: it records 1080i, and I would have prefered a 1080p capable camera. But for the price tag, it was not that bad: less than 200€. Cheers!
Excellent, Ian. I use two Sony R800 camcorders to make videos at a shooting range, one on the target and one on the pistol or shooter. Both subjects are stationary. Then I use a small audio recorder and lav mic on me to record all I say or do at both locations. What I love about camcorders is that I can set them up on tripods, start recording, and they will run for nearly two hours with small files without card or battery changes. I can sync up all three tracks very quickly in post, gun shots are as good as hand claps, then edit out all the dead time to make a 2-5 minute video from an hour's worth of footage and sound. I don't have to start and stop the cameras at all, so I can concentrate on shooting instead of video. My audience couldn't care less whether the video was 4k or 1080. I am always in good light outdoors. The R800 has hdmi out as well as a microphone jack so I can use wireless hdmi transmitter and receiver also at longer distances if I want to see the target from the shooter position. I can also use these as webcams but low light performance is not good. The prices shot up during lockdown but are returning to the more normal $200-$230 range in the US now. I may buy a backup in the Fall. Just in case someone shoots one. They aren't bulletproof!
Hi, you’ve basically summed up how I feel about them. All too often, people buy cameras because their specs are massive or they’re worried about their image. I couldn’t care less. I just want videos that tell a story or have a satisfying structure that captures the audience. No one, other than a ‘nerdy’ type is going to analyse the picture unless it’s a boring video. My opening shots are red. Big deal. I was sitting under a bright red umbrella with blazing sun coming through. So the camera showed what it saw. 4K is the new hd I guess. For me, the editing, file size etc is not yet worth the cost in cameras and computing power. I’m not poor, but I do consider the usage and end target. I’m watching on an hd TV or on TH-cam. Does that warrant 4k at the cost? I guess if you’re a techie type, it does but mostly, for me, it’s theoretical. We’re talking about a £220 camera here. Less than a GoPro. Better dynamic range. Better exposure control. Almost as light. Big screen where you can see the picure plainly. A massive zoom range. It takes massive files and keeps its cool. I love them. The video content is more important. I have seen so many poor videos taken on much better equipment than mine. For me, sound quality is important. That seems to define what is perceived as a good or poor video if the content doesn’t hit the spot! I recently completed a 12 part music series for kids totally on camcorders. We have a music business and during lockdown, I had to film and edit one 25 minute episode every week. That included music composition, recording and mixing and filming with a soundtrack. I used an ax53, the CX450 and for outdoor shots, either an Osmo pocket, Action or GoPro. Sharp as anything because I lit it properly. These cheap cameras are capable of much more than people give them credit for.
Great minds think alike Ian as I am editing a video about Camcorders vs DSLR & Mirrorless cameras. I have the AX-33 and it’s a great camera, the AX-53 came out a month after I bought the 33. The 53’s 30x zoom is nice compared to only 10x on the 33.
They are so easy to use Andre. Big screen. Bright. Menu at your fingertips. Pretty light for vlogging. Stabilisation is pretty good. Even better; even the cheap ones give a good picture. I purposely chose the cx450 because it’s a cheapo for my demo. My face is a bit red, but I was sitting under a bright red umbrella with the sun blazing through it! For the next one, I’ll use the bottom of the range one .... the cx405! Thing is, people hopefully watch the video and don’t even consider what camera you used! Story is more important.
Well, to be honest no cheap camcorder has a brilliant zoom lens. A good lens would cost 3 to 5 times the cost of the camera I should think. In all of these, they’re much the same except for the ax53. But then you pay more for an ax53.
@@iancraig thank you for your reply, I am going to check that out. Recently purchased a Canon sx-70hs and was wondering if there's a camcorder out there with better zoom. I know the Nikon p950/1000 exists but they are just impossible to find these days, all stores telling me there's a 3 months wait.
any chance of some footage from each camera? we know the cam you're using here is EXPENSIVE AF but what about the rest of them, do they look anywhere near the quality of your main video there?
The main video was done on the CX450 which certainly isn't as expensive AF. The dearest one, the ax53 is around £600 which, as far as decent cameras go, is pretty cheap. I would say all of the CX range have a picture similar to my walk video, which was done on the cx450 which is/was a £220 or so camera. Not the expensive AF one. 😅 I'll compare the CX ones though in a video soon.
@@iancraig at 2:15 in the video you said you used the AX53. Brilliant quality, but way outta my price range, Im in Ireland so its more expensive over here cuz of Brexit :/
Forgive me for asking this, the AX53 that you've recorded this video with doesn't seem to handle skin tone as well as the other handycams all the background is nice but your skin colour is a bit orange not a natural human skin colour or perhaps it was not set properly? I own the cx625 and the cx405 if the CX405 had an input for a mic, it would my main handycam it is far superior to all the other handycams I have tested and owned including the CX265.
The white balance is probably off. Oh no, sorry I remember now. I was under a red umbrella and if I had set it for my skin, the background would have gone alien looking. I couldn’t video at the time indoors so I was stuck out there in the blazing sun so I was hiding. TBH, because it was just for TH-cam, I couldn’t be bothered to set up lights. It didn’t look quite so red on the screen but on TH-cam, I came out like a peach!
Hi Mr Ian. First, thanks for so much great information and great detailed explanation. I have been looking for information that eludes me. I own a HDR CX- 130. Before that a cheap Hi 8mm and then a nice Hi-8 in storage. My point is, I turn 69 in 3 weeks and my eyes get worse every day. I can't see the flip out screen to frame and shoot video DOES ANYONE KNOW an affordable Sony Handycam that still has an eye piece? I assume that is what you call it. My old cameras, both have eye pieces. Thanks for any info.
Thanks Mike. There are no Sony ones until you get to the ax53 which isn’t cheap. I must admit at the age of 67 myself, I often wear my reading glasses and look over the top for long distance! My long distance vision is better than short, but not brilliant. I just fold up the reading glasses and stick them in a shirt pocket when not videoing. The only camera I have with a viewfinder is the Canon M50 which still isn’t cheap, but its viewfinder isn’t as good as the ax53. Try using the DJI Pocket 2. That’s a joke for my eyes with its tiny screen!!! Small screens often cause me to make mistakes like I did with a recent video I did showing Osmo Action profiles. I filmed at 240FPS instead of 50!! Couldn’t see it on the screen...... They don’t cater for us lot. Another idea is to buy a small compact and add a viewfinder onto the back. I’m demonstrating one here .... th-cam.com/video/qdwSqohVsHo/w-d-xo.html
Please excuse my ignorance here but you kept mentioning something to do with the sound? A Lavalier? I'm not even sure I'm saying it right or spelling it right or what? 😄😄
Hi Ash. A lavalier is a mini microphone designed to be pinned to you. Newsreaders wear them on their collar. You can get great sound because the capsule is always close to you. There are many makes of lavalier mics.
Interesting video. Thanks. I am interested in a camcorder mainly for travel and on holiday, also some family videoing. I am not into creating my own videos and doing lots of editting. However, I do like a good quality image. Back in the day we used a Sony Digital 8 (3 of them as they needed replacing) on high setting and the quality was pretty good, even after digitising it. I guess these are the modern equivalents. The circa-2010 SD card Pansonic we got for a couple of hundred was rubbish in comparison. Now we set our sights on a new camera. I have found in the past that camcorders may last 5+ years but often die after 3 or 4. So, maybe the top one here would be my absolute max. For my needs, there's no point shelling out mega bucks if it dies in a few years. I have a few questions if I may: Would I need an AX53 or would I actually be fine with a 625? Which set of step rings do you use as lens caps? I use lens caps on all my Olympus SLRs, so I know how important this is and I've read that it's hard to find a proper cap that fit these. What about battery life between the AX53 and the 625? If necessary I would buy a second battery. Would I get by in very bright sunlight with the 625 and the screen turned up to max, or would I miss a proper viewfinder? Thanks in advance.
The AX53 is a very superior camera to the 625. However, if you don’t want to edit in order to put videos together but use what you get, I wouldn’t personally go for an ax53. You wouldn’t be getting the best from it. The technology on it would be wasted. It is capable of brilliant results where I’d say the 625 gives you a good overall ‘average’ on auto. I’m suprised you don’t want to edit films. It improves them dramatically. I even used to edit super 8 video back in the late 60’s. Anyway, the rings I use are some bog standard cheapos from Amazon. Battery life is similar on both. I have a big battery on both so they last for ages. Standard batteries have a shorter life. You can see the screen on the 625 in sunlight. It can be turned up, but that shortens battery life even more. The AX53 has more control over exposure so the picture you can get is a lot better than the 625. However, this requires some editing. For instance, I often expose for highlights and then bring up the black or even take it down, in order to get the best contrast; even in bright sunlight. Nothing gets blown out. That gives a breath taking images. My own preference is the ax53. It is a superb camcorder. But, if you just want family videos so quality isn’t the most important thing, then the 625 would be fine. TBH, you get what you pay for and a £200 camera isn’t going to be that great really. I paid over £300 just for a lens!
In the end, I took your advice, Ian, and shelled out for an AX53. In any case, most camcorders are in short supply right now, so this made sense after hours of searching. It looks like a great camera and I took to it straight away. It'll be used a lot of holiday as well as around the house at family events. I have a few quick questions, if that's ok, as you seem to be someone with a lot of experience and there is maybe too much noise out there on what to do with this camera. When I do come to shoot in bright sunlight - say with sea or lots of blue sky, will it tend to blow out, and if so, is the best solution using Exposure Compensation of half or one stop, an ND filter (if so which one?), a lens hood, a polariser, setting white balance away from auto to sunlight etc? Maybe a combo. I've bouight a 55mm UV fileter which will protect and help a tiny bit. On my SLR, I'd use a grad filter and a histogram for bright light, but I am newish to serious camcorders and don't know the best solution here. If I do go for a second battery is the Sony one a must or do you find there are good quality makes elsewhere? I've currently got it set to 4k 100 frames a second and Active stabilisation. I'll try that out. I feel maybe best quality HD maybe easily enough in practise. Any thoughts? Many thanks.
Hi David. I was wondering what you would end up with. TBH, you’ve really made the best choice because the ax53 is sharp and it has a nice mic preamp. As far as settings go, I would use 100fps for normal video. You would use that for slow motion. I have made a video on settings. Normally, I use 50fps at 1/50th on a tripod or 1/100 when handholding. There are reasons for this since 1/50th gives really nice motion blur but isn’t great for hand holding. Motion blur plus camera shake at 1/50th looks horrible so I up the shutter to 100th as a compromise when hand holding. Leave frame rate at 50. For sun and getting overblown bits this is what I do. I have set the front ring up as exposure compensation. I have zebras turned on. When exposing, I always expose to where the zebras come on and then turn the ring slightly to bring it down. It’s called exposing to the right. In post, you can always alter contrast ranges or the overall brightness of the picture. It works every time! With a histogram, this is the equivalent of having everything to the right on the graph and then in post, you can bring blacks down to what you want. (Or up) For sky, I use a graduated or if it’s sunny, a polariser. I try to avoid white out if I can. Sometimes though, you can’t. Just depends on the brightness. The AX53 is a brilliantly thought out camcorder and you can get fantastic results from it. I prefer using it very often to my Canon m50 because it’s SO quick to set up. Ideal for holidays.
@@iancraig Thanks, Ian. I will experiment with that. I may get it set up nicely for me, but mainly when we are on holiday, I am taking stills with my SLR (Olympus Em1) and it's my wife who is doing the camcorder stuff. I will try to trach her re the zebra. If it's too much fiddling for her, I may try just setting it to sunlight and Exposure comp. Sounds like setting to Shutter Priority and 100th is the way to go as we will be shooting hand held 99.99% of the time. Even moving indoors this should be fine most times. Maybe 100 frames a second at HD rather than 4k will be enough? Or even 50 frames a second at HD? Plus then you get the full camera stabilisation, which i think you don't on 4k. Any battery thoughts or is this really an individual thing? If I get two hours out of the one we get with the camera, that may be enough anyway at the rate we shoot, but a spare can be handy.
Thanks Bob. The pond os a lovely place to go. The people living around it are very lucky. I always worry about the animals because in fact, they are so tame. The sheep is a daft old thing who follows me around like a dog every time I see him. I often worry about poachers who do occasionally visit. Same for the light coloured ducks. They follow me and I have noticed that one is now missing. The dogs are a couple of saddo dogs. They’re kept as ‘ratters’. They go for rats which can be a problem in the country. As guard dogs, they’re rubbish as you can see! You can easily bribe them with kindness!!! They know me now though because they see me nearly every day. They try to keep up the pretence of being guard dogs but soon calm down and want to play .....
The cx450 is a good value camcorder. I like the fact that it has a mic input, although no way of fixing the mic to it. No coldshoe. That means it’s a lavalier so the mic is close or a mic on a lead, again getting you to place the mic close. It stops you being lazy and plonking a mic on top of the camera! It’s small so is really handy. Generally, I use this one in preference to my Action although it isn’t as small.
Absolutely. And because they’re properly set up to take video, they comparatively light and lightening fast to set up. No fuss. In many ways, I prefer the cx450 to the GoPro. I find the picture quality smoother with better dynamic range. The zoom range is massive. The audio is just as good or probably better because the camera has a nice preamp as well. The only thing it won’t do is underwater and rough sports I guess.
到此一游 - XploreNZ - Actually, come to think of it .... yes they do. I love their simplicity if I’m honest. So much easier not to make a mistake while you’re out and about. I hate messing with settings in bright daylight where you can barely see the screen anyway.
Thanks for the informative video. I have a question. Obviously the resolution of the photos of the cx450 is limited (9mp), but is the quality (sharpness, clarity) of the photos/stills of this camcorder when you zoom in heavily reasonably good?
I have the Sony CX-405 and I am very, very happy with the sound the only thing I do not like about it is the joystick to hard to handle for this 70+ year old man it took me 20 minutes just to set the clock. I have my camera set at 60p if I set it at 60i animals will be burly when running. Thanks for your review.
Well, I'm 67 and si far, not too bad for me with the joystick tbh. There should be no difference in size ratios between 60p and 60i. The only difference is the scanning. Interlaced (I) just shows half of the screen, every other line and then the other half, every other line. Progressive shows all of the lines in one go. I would suggest sticking with progressive which gives a proper, full HD. Size ratios should be exactly the same. By 'burly' do you mean 'fat'?
Oh, ok. You're seeing the interlacing. These days, interlacing isn't generally used. The main UK TV stations still use it but that's more to do with bandwidth and sending a signal out efficiently. Interlaced HD is actually half of HD on each frame so not actually as 'HD' as progressive. Personally, I never use interlaced.
ooh, nice channel you've get there, sir. It's true that camcorders are like those black sheep in the vlogging family, but frankly, with all those affordable smartphones these days, people just don't need them anymore. Pros: - stabilization, zoom range. Cons: - everything else ;) Seriously, it's getting harder and harder to pick a cheap camcorder over a smartphone
These cheap camcorders are nowhere near good enough for professional use. I can’t see professionals having any use for them at all in all honesty or even considering them for professional use.
😂 The red face at the start was the red umbrella above me! I tried taking it out but everything in the background went alien so I didn’t bother. That’ll teach me. Couldn’t see the screen in the sun!
what u forgot to mention that on the 625 a standard shoe doesnt work. Its necessary to buy a seperate adaptor which sony doesnt make. Another way they screw us for money by making us use sony products only.
Yes. It's that daft Sony automatic gain hotshoe! I wouldn't use that for Sony mics. It only works in automatic gain so you can get dreadful noise with some Sony mics via that hotshoe The adapter is a pain, but it does get the mic up and well out if the way. It's not too expensive to buy and then you can use any mic. That way you don't need any mic from Sony. It’s £11 and if you add the cost of say, a Deity D4 mini, the combo is less or similar to a Sony mic. It’s actually not as big a deal as you’re making out. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00O1PZ9HE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You are one of the few youtubers that actually covered Camcorders. Thanks for your video.
@@iancraig ahahaha Yess. couldn't agree more 🤣 anyway thanks for your video. Finally I bought a Sony CX405. Cheers from Indonesia
Yay! Someone else gets that camcorders are awesome! I have two. An most excellent video Ian! Really, it was most enjoyable and informative. 👍👍👍
Ease of use so you’re free to create a decent video, Kevin. Very little worrying about settings!
The picture looks much more vibrant than from my Sony cx450. Any postediting of colours?
Probably. But if you have to use an editor to string it all together, might as well adjust the colour too.
Most cameras will produce a ‘flatter’ result so they are able to cope with varying lighting conditions. Then you can tweak to taste later.
Thanks for this video been looking for one for my 625 using as a web cam/ videos in obs....thanks
Thank you
God Bless

Your way steadier in zoom than me. At full 60x, I can see my heartbeat in the video hand held. I subscribed just for that.
It is difficult. I breathe out and hold my breath! Also, hold lightly and don't grip tight. The zoom range is ridiculously large though!!!
Ian
I've just ordered a Panasonic HC W850 camcorder after watching your videos its got two cameras on it for vloging with picture in picture option I will follow your vlogs to learn to set it up and use it properly thanks again 😀
There’s something really nice about camcorders. They’re so quick to set up and use because they’re really geared up for video.

I've brought it filming trains 50 x zoom 90 x digital zoom like the duel camera function going to watch your vlogs on setting it up and look at buying the tripod on your sony video the suri one and the concept rings I've got a gorilla tripod coming with it
I guess the AX53 has not been superseded yet?
@@iancraig Thanks for the advice, a big tranhs againe from the Algarve/Portugal
How did you mount the Lens Hood on the Camcorders?
Do they have threads for mounting any accessories like Hoos or Filter?'
The only one that doesn’t have a thread is the cx405. The rest are threaded.
@@iancraig Thanks for your quick response!
Hi Alberto. It would work fine. Audio from a mic, like a lavalier straight into camera and you’ll get great audio as well.
@@iancraig Wow thank you so much Ian for the answer!!
I don’t see many people using camcorders nowadays and I’ve often wondered why. Would this be a cheaper set up that vlogging with a go pro? X
(Kitesurfers)
The best compromise in my camcorder collection in the CX450.
Go for the 675 or 700 cx models.
Thanks for the video. I am in dilemma of which to get. Panasonic v180 or Sony 405.
Just my two cents - Watching some reviews comparing Sony, Canon & Panasonic the person said the Panasonic felt cheaper plastic...Jeanne
(Very light and mobile)
Cx450 with lavalier. (Light. No hotshoe on camera but there is an input)
Cx625 with shotgun mic or wireless mic. Also lavalier.
Ax53 mostly at home because of its size and weight. With any mic. Often use studio mic or shotgun mic.
Adapter rings - amzn.to/3fmf59Q
Sirui tripod - amzn.to/33fTVb2
With video, the more I develop, the more I realise that it’s not just the picture, but the story that is important, so I made a demo using the cx450 just sitting in two positions by the local pond to demonstrate how a zoom lens and a reasonable camera produces such a wide variation of shots from a fixed position which makes for a great memory video after being out and about or on holiday for instance.
@@iancraig thanks so much for the reply ian.. Absolutely appreciated👍👍🏴
I agree, I vlog on my personal channel with the cx405, the pJ10e and the ax53, all three are great camera's
Is CX 405 and AX53 difference that big? On 1080p?
Pretty different, yes. Sharper. Better contrast. Sharper lens.
Hi there!
Ive been consuming all your camcorder videos because your reviews and demos are so useful! Im going on holiday in a few months and am juggling whether to buy the CX405 or CX450 to record the experience.
Thanks again!
The 450 has an audio input for a lavalier which is handy.
@@iancraig Interesting! I'm leaning towards the 405 just because it seems to be cheaper in my country haha!
@iancraig I have taken note of this information . I welcome your advice. It is much appreciated. Thanks Ian 😊.
Great video I’m looking for a Sony camcorder to use alongside my Canon DLSR for my detailing channel thanks 🙏🏻 for these uploads
They’re not the sharpest of cameras Paul, but basically ok. The best of my bunch is the ax53 but you pay more for it which isn’t surprising. That one is also the sharpest.
Can you tell me where I get the step up rings to screw into a sony CX625? Regards Tim
Ian
Great video.
Thank you.
Sir Is the cx625 the same as the cx675 other than the cx625 doesn't have internal memory?
It looks like it might be. I think it has a different lens though.
Yes I want to buy this for my vlogs TH-cam it's my first best choice. Thank u to review for this handycam
They are really easy to use as well.
Great video Ian. I just ordered a used cx 615. I thought that it also had a mic input next to headphone, in addition to the mic. Shoe on top? Jeanne
@@iancraig wow no way! Multiple sources of audio - that's a good idea! Thanks for the tip!

I can set the exposure before I shoot on a view in the menus and there a big devise to adjust it but not out of the menus as I change senery
I’m not sure what ‘sunset’ mode is ....
i'm torn between cx405 & cx625 bc them both have a vintage film aesthetic (1080p 60fps) with amazing zoom capability, and i don't really looking for the 4k one bc i've got my compact sony zv1 already which capable to do that
The cx625 allows you to mount a microphone onto it whereas with the cx405, you only have onboard sound. That makes a big difference.
@@iancraig grazie!
@@iancraig Hi Ian Just a quickie, are the quick release plates a Sirui brand and only fit the T3-35 or are they a generic brand, as i'm just about to place an order

Sony CX450 can shoot time lapse?
No. It's a real budget type camcorder.
@@iancraig Thanks for that Ian!👌
Thank you very much for your Video but i have a question. How is the name of the objective on the cx450? I thought I can’t put there on it and know I see it works ^^
Can you send me the link or the name of it?
Hi Kayn. I’m really sorry, but I don’t understand the question.
Sorry..
My question are, do you know a lens adapter for the Sony cx450?
Or doesn’t work it for?
Or how do you install the rings on the Sony cx450?
Do you use glue or work it for this Modell?
And if i install the rings on it, could I put on the rings a lense adapter?
Sorry for all the questions, but I can’t find the answers for it..
I’m a newbie
The cx450 has a screw thread on the front, so the rings can be screwed on like other lenses. The cx405 doesn’t have a screw thread but the 450 does.
The filter thread diameter is 37mm as shown on the Sony specs www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/memory-camcorders-hdr-cx-series/hdr-cx450/specifications
So any adapters with that diameter. I bought a set of stereo up rings and used them as a lens hood.
Can I attach various lens or filters to any sony cx camcorder?
All of the camcorders except the really cheap one, the cx405 will take filters. None of them have interchangeable lenses because they already have a large zoom on them.
@@iancraig Thanks a lot Ian. You are awesome. Take much love❤

The rings don’t fit on a 405. In the video, that’s the one without them.
@@iancraig Thanks Ian.
Having said that Bruno, some people stick the first ring onto the front of the camera and then you can fit them.
Recently I was reading about the Dogma 95 movement in filmmaking and they all made interesting films using entry level camcorders..
@Laven 405 and 450 are very similar in quality as far as video goes. Main difference is just sound.
I have de CX405. Love it.
G'Day Ian
I know this is an old thread but I couldn't agree more with your sentiment over camcorders.
中国人常说一句话: 人尽其才,物尽其用。小DV能满足很多非专业级别的需求了。谢谢视频分享,拍的赏心悦目
?
Can i use a wireless mic with the cx 450?
Yes, but there is no coldshoe to attach it to so it would have to just hang by the wire or you need to use a coldshoe bracket or ‘l’ bracket.
Lets gooooo! It is ok i just wanted a wireless mic with it
😀
How do these cameras fair indoors or in low light situations??
I love the Pocket picture but not that tiny screen.
May I ask the brand Lavaliere mic?
It’s a Little Clippy from Micbooster.com
@@iancraig Thank you.
Brilliant video - really useful - in the process of ditching my Mini DV so this is a revelation!
I ditched an old DV as well, years back!
Cheers!
does AVCHD format on camrecorders are log type?
No. REC709.
Good stuff. I have a PJ790-HDR, a CX240 and a CX405.
Thank you Crypto. I do like camcorders. No fuss whatsoever.
Wow these colors are beautiful right out of camera.
Not straight out of camera. Saturation was added.
Do you know which camcorders have the best zoom these days?
Well, to be honest no cheap camcorder has a brilliant zoom lens. A good lens would cost 3 to 5 times the cost of the camera I should think. In all of these, they’re much the same except for the ax53. But then you pay more for an ax53.
@@iancraig thank you for your reply, I am going to check that out. Recently purchased a Canon sx-70hs and was wondering if there's a camcorder out there with better zoom. I know the Nikon p950/1000 exists but they are just impossible to find these days, all stores telling me there's a 3 months wait.
With cheap zoom lenses, you lose more and more detail at the extreme end.
did i miss the part where you compared zoom levels?
I don’t know what you missed.
Ge-oh-oh-ge-le-e is definitely the lazy man’s friend. 🤪
@@iancraig I meant to ask if you also reviewed the zoom distance on these cameras in this video
I think they all do the same. Up to 60x digital. Not sure optical. Basically …. Massive!
Which recording format did you use for the camcorders?
Whatever the format is in the camcorders. Not WAV.
any chance of some footage from each camera? we know the cam you're using here is EXPENSIVE AF but what about the rest of them, do they look anywhere near the quality of your main video there?
The main video was done on the CX450 which certainly isn't as expensive AF.
The dearest one, the ax53 is around £600 which, as far as decent cameras go, is pretty cheap.
I would say all of the CX range have a picture similar to my walk video, which was done on the cx450 which is/was a £220 or so camera. Not the expensive AF one. 😅
I'll compare the CX ones though in a video soon.
@@iancraig at 2:15 in the video you said you used the AX53. Brilliant quality, but way outta my price range, Im in Ireland so its more expensive over here cuz of Brexit :/

I did the opening on the AX53
I can't see the flip out screen to frame and shoot video
DOES ANYONE KNOW an affordable Sony Handycam that still has an eye piece?
I have a few questions if I may:
Would I need an AX53 or would I actually be fine with a 625?
@@iancraig Great. Thanks. I will think a bit more. Some good advice.
(Or up)
For sky, I use a graduated or if it’s sunny, a polariser.
@@iancraig
Thanks, Ian.
I've found the 450 great for doing videos, even mounted on a bike the shake wasn't too bad, thanks for the tips.
For what you pay, the whole series is great!
Very nice video Ian. Thanks for sharing. I love that pond and all your furry and feathered friends.
Great vid Ian I’m going to buy the cx 450 I have the dji action at the moment, so it’s up for sale 👍👍
I have the AX 53. Love it. Great review.
Thanks Rod. I was a bit red under the umbrella, but we did have blazing sun going through a bright red umbrella above me!
There are 2 things I like about camcorders:
They have no recording time limit and they don´t overheat.
And that long life battery
到此一游 - XploreNZ - Actually, come to think of it .... yes they do. I love their simplicity if I’m honest. So much easier not to make a mistake while you’re out and about. I hate messing with settings in bright daylight where you can barely see the screen anyway.
Thanks for the informative video. I have a question. Obviously the resolution of the photos of the cx450 is limited (9mp), but is the quality (sharpness, clarity) of the photos/stills of this camcorder when you zoom in heavily reasonably good?
It's OK. A camera at this price just doesn't have an expensive lens on it so I think post sharpening might be a good idea for larger prints.
Love the way this review is done. Thank you!
Thanks Gage.
@@iancraig When a dog is running it looks like 2 dogs or frames not together but for fast motion Progressive is the best setting. Thanks for replying.
@@iancraig Thanks for your tips, you are very intelligent. Greg from Kenosha WI.
ooh, nice channel you've get there, sir. what u forgot to mention that on the 625 a standard shoe doesnt work. Its necessary to buy a seperate adaptor which sony doesnt make. Another way they screw us for money by making us use sony products only.
Yes. It's that daft Sony automatic gain hotshoe! I wouldn't use that for Sony mics. It only works in automatic gain so you can get dreadful noise with some Sony mics via that hotshoe
The adapter is a pain, but it does get the mic up and well out if the way. It's not too expensive to buy and then you can use any mic.
That way you don't need any mic from Sony.
It’s £11 and if you add the cost of say, a Deity D4 mini, the combo is less or similar to a Sony mic. It’s actually not as big a deal as you’re making out.
