The Action 5 now saves a WAV file separate from your video. That WAV file doesn't use the mic input from external mics, but the internal mics of the camera. That means that you can use a shotgun to get clean audio from the front and the camera audio if you want to include your voice from the rear.
Thanks Iam Craig. excellent talk, and demonstration, putting the camera to gooduse and showing what it can do with the Audio side smooth talking for sure
It really opens the camera’s potential to be more inclusive than a camera for bikes, motorcycles, diving or general throwing around. TBH, although fast action stuff is great, for me it doesn’t do a lot because there isn’t really a plot/storyline. You just bolt a camera on and go. No real finesse. While there is definitely a need for cameras that can do that, there’s nothing to stop them being a more ‘general’ type of camera where you might want to tell a story in your video and on those occasions, you want/need clear speech. I’m more into sound than video actually because I come from a music background and for me, a camera is very limited without decent sound capabilities; even if you only want to use it occasionally. So I think the 5 has the general ‘vlog’/family type camera sorted. This one will do it unless you want to go into more fancy stuff like limiting depth of field….. but that’s another thing entirely!
It is very good that you discovered this, and having your own wav sound file is incredibly good since you can combine the sounds if one is not of good quality. OA5 Pro has really started to earn the name Pro now.
I think it’s probably the best miniature vlogging camera around now, Roger. The sound surprised me. I only have a week before I cruise and I’m gasping for the new firmware update. I’m going to take the 5 with me.
@@iancraig I do think we will see the new firmware in short time period if they will only adjust a few things. Thinking OA5 Pro will serve you really well on that cruise.
Hi Ian hope you're well. Great demo of the audio with the different mics. To be honest I'm torn between the GP 12 and the action 4, love them or hate them i do like the media mod idea it still keeps the GP compact but has a fairly good mic and able to connect an external mic. At the moment i don't need an action cam but next year i'll want one for holiday vlogs etc. I'll just keep an eye on cost/reviews etc, Action 4 or GP12, Action 5 or GP13 decisions decisions. Best wishes Stay safe Jon
Hi Jon. I know what you mean about the compactness. I’m on a cruise soon and will have 5000 people on board with me. So that will be videod under the cover! I find that the Action 4 and 5 internal audio is really good. If it’s noisy, then I use their wireless or if not bothered about bulk, a shotgun. With the 5 though, I can use both the shotgun or wireless with camera audio at the same time. So say for instance, I’m talking to Helena from behind the camera, I can plant the wireless by her, while I talk into the camera. Brilliant setup for vlogging.
@@lensmanonline This is on a P&O ship called Iona. We have a cabin with a balcony looking out to see. I’m quietly hoping for a slight storm to video, but Helena will be sick! I’m taking the Action 5 for rough stuff and walkabout and probably the Pocket 2 for onboard because people might get funny if they see a camera. This ship has 19 levels I think it is, so looking from the top might be like looking from a cliff. A week and half to go.
Very informative, this has helped with my understanding of it. Thank you 👏👍 Am i right in thinking that this can also be done with the Action 4? If so, how do you set it up to record both in camera and from wireless mic 2?
I’m not sure about the Action 4 recording a backup track. I don’t think that it does because on the Action 5, you have to switch it on through the menu and it’s not there on the 4 menu. Only way with the 4 is to record direct onto the transmitter while sending wireless.
I didn’t notice one Allen. Then again, I wasn’t particularly looking for it. All I noticed was that the internal mics are almost ‘ultra’ omni. There was a ton of noise out there so I tried that test with the dynamic, on camera mic, and internal mics. Just a handy option if people want better audio. I should have tried the Senn 600.
Great vid! I just wanted to ask, does this mean that if i connect 2x DJI Mic Mini to Action 5 i can use 3 audio tracks? I want to shoot some videos from car and i would love to use one DJI Mini for exhaust sound, one DJI Mini for intake sound but would love to still have audio from the inside of the car in the cabin. Is that possible with the DJI Action 5?
Yes it is. Set the audio in camera to stereo. The mic mini will appear on one track. The other mic will appear on the other track. The in camera audio will be a separate wav file with the same ID number as the video that it relates to. Just place it under the camera audio, lined up. Funny thing that this audio aspect of the camera is mostly overlooked. For instance, you could record yourself some distance away in mono on the mic mini while the camera records ambience. Then you can control how much ambience that you want. Also as I showed here … you can talk behind the camera into the camera mics while others use a wireless and then balance them in post.
Thanks for the video and info, sounds great! curious if you can help me understand how the Action 5 receives audio input through USB-C. In your specific setup after plugging in the preamp, are you getting audio into the Action 5 through the DJI 3.5mm adapter? Or is the preamp connecting directly into the camera via USB-C? What preamp are you using on your dynamic mic? I have a Shure MV88+ usb-C mic and I am struggling to get the camera to recognize the device. Any idea if it is possible to plug in a USB-C audio interface into the Action 5?
Yes, you can go direct in via usb C. For my dynamic mic and the shotgun, I had the camera plugged into the DJI battery handle. That has a 3.5mm socket and the handle is plugged into the USB C on the camera. So in effect, I am using the USB connection for this audio, until I go behind the camera where I switched to the internal mics.
@@iancraig Okay, good to know. Just tried plugging in an RME Babyface audio interface in CC mode and was able to get 2 channels of separate audio into the camera. Thanks!

Thanks Fish. Talking over a lot of noise too. The DJI is possibly becoming one of the best vlogging mini cameras around I think.
I really like that you found this out, it open up so much more potential for the Action 5 Pro

Is there an audio delay? Many action cameras are a little out of sync
