I went bluefin fishing with a few buddies on the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing. Capt. Matt and crew did a great job of putting us on a lot of bluefin. Unfortunately, the bluefin did bluefin usually does...more show than go. But they did bite more on this trip than my previous trips. These were some mean fish. They bit through quite a bit of hookups. Our hooked to land ratio was atrocious! Something like 15+ hookups with only 4 fish landed. As for me on this trip couldn't get a bite most of the day. Started with flat fall. Then flyline with 40lb test. Eventually I couldn't take it anymore and dropped down to 30lb (against the crew's advice) in hope of getting a bite. I got bit instantly on 30lb! I got it to the leader 4 times only to have it strip back all the line. Unfortunately these fish were just too much for the light gear. Giving the circumstance I feel like it was the right thing to do. You can't land them if you can't get a bite right? lol The weather was awesome and Doug made some great grub in the galley! It was a great trip regardless of how many fish were landed. I piece together enough usable footage for this video. Hope everyone enjoys it!
Jigslinger's Fishing Channel wow, good video as always. What rainshadow rod was that? And what size and brand of hook were you using? (Trying to compare my hook size) I booked next month, I want to go now but got a newborn and my hands are full. I can’t wait for my first bluefin, hoping to get it this year but you know how it goes. 😂
Bernardo Villanueva It was an 84h Rainshadow. I had a size 1 J hook on. A circle hook would’ve been a lot better. These fish were so big the just suck in the sardine. By the time you react the hook is in the throat. So your line end up scraping against their teeth. With a circle hook you’ll have a better chance at getting the corner of the mouth. Good luck on your trip! 🤙
Is there a reason why the deckhand took over for the last 10 min? Were you tired? Then, to add insult to injury he slams your rod into the rail out of frustration after he loses your fish!
Oh man that sucks! I was down in SoCal for a bluefin trip and fought a bluefin for 1.5 hours and also lost it the boat! Horrible feeling! My video is up if you wanna check it out!

Switch to low gear next time. That is why you bought the 2 speed Saltiga. I like the way the deckhand slams your rod into the rail after he loses your fish. That is just another insult to losing your fish. He was overstressing your rod and line.
You need that 40lb to 60lb mono top shot for the stretch. Get moving on those fish so the deck hands do take the rod from you to get you repositioned on the rail. Good luck next time.
Damn, that was a nice try with the Saltiga. That had to be at least a 70 pound bluefin to be that tough to bring in. Great video though, thanks for sharing it with us.
@@jigslingersfishingchannel3713 That's all you can do. I feel that you are an excellent fisherman, and that some of the advice you're being given may not be accurate, as there are always so many variables. I know one time the skipper had me switch from a J hook to a circle hook, and he tied it for me, and when i got bit it actually came off! So I blamed him for losing the fish, LOL, although it's possible that since it was a deep soak my drag may have been set too high.

Good videos. Quick question. Why do you always use conventional reels? Just curious if there are any reasons that you do not use spinning reels. When I watch Japanese fishing channels, many of them use big shimano or daiwa spinning reels on off shore fishing boats. Again, just curious. Thanks.
JT Cooper Great observation! It has a lot to do with the fishing culture in Southern California. Having grown up here I’m used to conventional gears for saltwater. Spinning gears are a lot easier to use but very limited in power back in the days. So they were shunned upon on the West Coast. Especially on SoCal Sportboats. These days there have been great technical advances in spinning equipment so they are no longer inferior. For certain applications like poppers they’re actually superior to conventional gears. However, the stigma is still there. It’s slowly changing. There aren’t as many chuckles nowaday when spinning gears are brought on a trip. SoCal saltwater fishing scene will always be dominated by conventional equipment. But now there’s a permanent spot for spinning gears and I think that’s a great thing. 🤙
@@jigslingersfishingchannel3713 - Thank you for answering to my questions and info / history. And that's very interesting. I would love to see you using stella or saltiga in the future, haha.

@@sinkos6194 Not really a mistake, but more of a calculated risk. He had to go down to 30 to get bit, but then you do have to have a bit of luck and a whole lot of skill to bring the fish in.
Try changing your bait more often. 9 times out of 10 the guys who are getting bit just casted out. Also watch where the guy on the tank is throwing bait and cast to the same spot if possible. Simple things most anglers forget about when infected by Bluefin fever.
LOL I never got a chance the eat the heart of my first tuna, but I did on my first yellowtail, which was thankfully only about 5 pounds. I don't think it made me invincible when it comes to yellowtail though. Still, always nice to force youngsters to eat their hearts =P

You went against captain and crews advice not to fish under 40lb test line. You should know better not to drop to 30lb to get bit. You are contributing to losing the school of tuna.
Here are my thoughts on that. If you're going to drop down to try and get a bite then you'd need to pull like it's heavier string. Meaning don't waste everyone's time by being on a fish for 1hr+ when the school is already gone and you're the only one hooked up. I pulled like it's heavier string. Got it up to leader 4 times. I didn't waste anyone's time during that span. As for losing fish there were 10+ fish lost at that point on heavier line. So I wouldn't have any qualms about doing the same thing again given the same scenario. Tight lines!
The deckhand should have given you back the pole as soon as you were out of the tangle
