This is absolutely stunning, I started it this afternoon and it is such an exciting one to do especially with all the videos to accompany it. You have such a wonderful community on patreon, some of them very talented in mixed media and it is inspirational for the rest of us to see the work they are producing. It is so friendly and everyone is so supportive and encouraging of each other. The true inspiration is you though, you never disappoint whatever you set us to do and I’m so glad to have the opportunity to learn from you 👍
Aw Margaret, that's so kind, I think we all inspire each other, I'm humbled to be a part of such a nice community of people, its you wonderful people that are the ones that are making happen 👍
Absolutely fabulous! You've brought me back to graphite drawing which I used to do a lot as a teenager, I'm now 72! You are so encouraging which is so kind. Thank you. Best wishes Geraldine.
The one thing I am learning from watching you work is Patience, Patience, Patience!!!! I quite often try to take "shortcuts", go too fast and in general, just don't exercise PATIENCE. I don't save time as many things I draw take hours equal to your time spent. Not to say I am close to your level of expertise, but when I finish "fixing" my shortcuts, etc., and am satisfied, I have spent equal time to your excellent results.
I would like to see somebody’s version of this without blending. It would be interesting to see what techniques they use to do all the different textures. 🤔 This is wonderful, thank you!
I used to be in the "do not blend" group but I've found it to be very useful now. Sometimes, I feel that a drawing I've done doesn't need blending at all while others greatly benefit from it. I think it all just depends on what you want your finished piece to look like. Thanks for the excellent tutorial!
Thanks for taking the time to comment Christy, I agree some drawings or areas in drawings don't really need to be blended, but it sure is useful and produces some lovely effect when it it used,
Thank you brother for the helpful information, i started drawing around 8 months ago and I enjoy portrait drawings and using a blending stump helps marvelous! Thank you for the helpful video for us to watch! :)
Oh my goodness! This is absolutely amazing, thank you for this video, it really helped me gain some inspiration and help with my one point perspective drawing!
Absolutely gorgeous. I could listen to your voice for hours! Unfortunately at the moment I live in the middle of nowhere and have to rely on just a few precious minutes viewing on my smartphone but shortly I shall be back in the land of the living and will subscribe to your Patreon site. Many thanks for your wonderful tutorials.
I used a blending tool for the first time only the other day, they are wonderful!! I can't believed I've never used one before, it gave such a wonderful soft finish I couldn't believe it!!
I love your work. Your tips have helped me a bunch. I follow some of the same folks you do. I’ve asked questions to a bunch of other artists on YT and found a bunch of snobs. I do mostly color pencils these days. I use Holbein color pencils. I also have polychromous and prisma color. And scolded for Holbein use. And blending! I think blending is a must. Where would Bob Ross be without his dry blending brush? Your channel is my favorite on the net! Always informative and I could listen to you all day!
Another great drawing and I've learned a lot from you so thank you. Regarding blending etc. firstly, I cannot for the life of me think what is wrong with it and secondly, whatever technique is used in producing art, if the art brings happiness and inspires people then it was the perfect technique!
I'm 56, and when I was young my art teachers would not allow me to blend. They told me that I could achieve the same effect with my pencil. Now that I am back to art after years of doing other things I am learning to blend and I am loving the results.
excellent drawing! thanks for sharing! another one that looks better than the original. i am a YES for blending. blending works beautifully for you and i am using it as well.
smoothie77 thanks for your response and I like your style and follow most of your work. It would be nice to meet you in person like so many others just to shake the hand of a real artist. Thanks.
So beautiful! I really like it! :) I like the genre itself, I was taught this kind of architecture drawings in high school, in Italy, and we could blend and use grids for accurate drawing, same way as you do :) I have no idea why some people say we shouldn't blend graphite, and also I really dislike cross hatching in drawings that are supposed to look realistic, they seem unfinished and look more like rough sketches.
Yeah, cross-hatching was developed for printing with ink and while I do happen to love cross-hatching I will tend to blend when I'm working with a blendable medium. So I have to say that it is a technique which works for a specific medium (ink) and which doesn't look so great in pencil.
I was so happy to find your new tutorial today cause I haven't heard from you for a long time. Excellent drawing ...much better than reference picture. Real pleasure to see you work on this one. You are our master. Take care :)
Thanks Jerzy, its been a while i agree, hopefully i will get more videos up this month, I've been busy with Patreon and other things, but should be more regular with the videos now...
Can you pls tell me why do u have those grind lines while your drawing? im still a beginner at drawing . but im striving to become a architect . even tho i knew i suck at drawings . but i really like to draw.
Another excellent video mate, your work is phenomenal. I have never heard of that before mate about people not agreeing with blending, why on earth would that be classed as a bad idea? I’d actually love know why it is frowned upon.
Thanks Harry, kind of you to say, I appreciate it! I too have no idea why blending is classed as a bad thing, still waiting for someone to comment and enlighten me?
I don't think it's wrong to blend, but I do think that you should learn how to shade without blending as well. Blending is great for really smooth and gradual shading, but if you want to maintain a crisp texture while the tone transitions from dark to light, or light to dark, then you should take the time to learn how to shade without blending.
Hi Cristina, sorry for the late reply, I have seen you have now managed to get on to patreon, thank you so much for becoming a member, if you need anymore help just let me know :)
Wow, I have encountered a few -art snobs- purists but never knew there were those who think blending is wrong 🤔 Just ridiculous! Every medium is blended at some stage. There are no rules in art. I would imagine their reasoning being only wet media should be blended or something akin to that 🙄 Anyway, nice work! 🙂
Lol nicely crossed out Kyomii, Yes its hard to believe that some artist don't agree with blending, maybe your thinking about wet media is true, I hope someone can shed some light on this...
smoothie77 I hope they can too, because I can’t think of any genuine reason why graphite shouldn’t be blended, -unless there’s a strange cult out there who rule blending is an unlawful activity- and graphite powder is made for blending! Have you tried the blackwing 602 pencils? If not, please do, they are fantastic to work with, only half the pressure required, and they blend like an absolute dream 😉
I used to blend and smudge my drawings, but then I wanted to start trying to make a similar effect by just drawing instead of changing the pencil marks
I don't understand how someone can say "don't use blending tools" or "Fie! Blend NOT!" How are we to achieve gradual gradations and fading effects, or get the ephemeral look of wispy clouds? Hmmmm... 🤔
If you can't use blenders with graphite then you maybe shouldn't be allowed to use a paintbrush with watercolour or oils etc. Personally I don't like using blenders, don't like the results I get with them, but a rule against them is ridiculous, I draw for pleasure, it's like telling me I can't shouldn't use a slice backhand when I play tennis, or that I shouldn't add a drop of water to my scotch.
@@smoothie77drawingpainting I know the question sounds snotty, but I am legit curious. If you don't make any artistic changes or draw "fiction", then I fails to see the point. But of course, it's allowed to do it for enjoyment.

Thank you Geraldine, that's great to hear you're starting to draw again, I wish you all the best, Happy Drawing!
Very beautiful and quality deep work I can understand it takes lot of time and patience 🙏

🙋🏻♀️Welcome back 👩🏻💻Love to watch you shade and blend ✍🏻
☺Thanks, your comments always put a smile on my face😁
What kind of blander was that of black colour? I have never seen such a blender before and it seems such an amazing tool.
Amazing as usual
Thanks, much appreciated👍
This was a very nice drawing lesson you showed us smoothie77, thank you. :D
You're welcome . I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I hope you don’t mind me asking but which pencil was it that you sharpened every 5 min and how do you sharpen it many thanks and a fantastic piece ❤
do you use a fixative?
Nice !
Thanks!
Smoothie is your media gridded at the manfacturer or do you do it? And with what grade lead if you do it?
Thank you
What is the black blending tool you use and how is it different to a paper tortillion
Its a Derwent paper blender, the tortillion is made from hard cardboard, better for smaller areas, the Derwent is softer and gives a smoother finish.

Hello...Was the grid that you use made separate from the pictures that you use...I've never made or used one before...This is why I am asking...
This is just amazing Jon! As a coincidance I will be uploading something simular next friday ^^ (but in colot)
You did an excellent job my friend!!!
Thanks Lineke, I look forward to seeing what you do, it should be good in colour👍
I like your voice very much😳I always refer to the picture.
