Bro I legit came to the comment section to say the same thing. Thought this knowledge was gonna be hella 'spensive. Now I can afford some coffee for each session I put his knowledge into practice.
I was a tattoo artist and hatching is how I achieved shading. I would use a mag needle (has its needles in straight lines and the amount of needles would depend on how large the shadow was). It created great graduations when used with different pressures. There were different inks (gray scales and black ink) that created realistic shadows. The depth of shadow was created from pressure used with the needles or motion of the hand (flicking the gun). Sorry.. just reminded me of tattooing. I miss it, but I can’t do them anymore due to arthritis. 😢 wish I could though. Nothing better than seeing my finished tattoos and the look of satisfaction on my clients.
I had to reply to this when I saw it. Everything you said I literally invisioned myself doing even the mag flick😂😂lol. This hurts me to my soul to hear this though. Fellow tattoo artist here 20+ years. Found myself after a bad accident where I had to relearn how to walk and talk again. After a long road of recovery just now getting back to where I could pick the machine up again. I have had to learn to draw pretty much all over again. Im learning the procreate thing now and it's helping on the ipad. Also Bigger grips and rotary machines have helped me immensely. If you are familiar w the companies bishop and tatsoul they make a disposable grip that helps w vibration and they come in different sizes. It has helped me immensely. Coil machines make my hand fall asleep as if I fell asleep on it all night after using it for 30-45 min . Also being in motorcross racing and blowing both wrists out at a young age multiple times doesn't help lol.... Don't like to see any of my fellow artists suffer and not be able to do what they love because I had it taken away from me so I understand completely. To be honest tattooing is what saved my life many years ago and other than my daughter & mother it's the one thing that brings me joy. I hope the arthritis and pain leaves you. Wish you nothing but prosperity and blessings in the new year!
Woah. I used to love to draw like this. At some point, I convinced myself detailed drawing wasn’t for me. The problem, I see now, was lack of detailed instruction. The results I received from this instructional make me love graphite drawing again. I will surely check out the whole series. Thanks Zapata Art!
I've only seen the two first parts of the tutorial (and this free chapter) for the moment, and even if it's not the first tutorial on shading I've seen, it's already worth it! Thanks a lot for this :)

Old washed up tattoo artist here. This seems like a good place to sit down. sorry to interrupt 3 years later but i definitely know im in the right place after seeing the tattoo artist comment.
I appreciate your dedication to the minutia of the process. Drawing as a continually mindful process is so important. Drawing is all about mindful attention, and you have balancwd this with an obvious joy and satisfaction.
in the first 10min you managed to answer 3 questions I was looking into going back to trad technique - alright onto gumroad I'm getting the full version
Done. Bought...and I'll be buying pretty much everything else as it comes out. Have seen tutorials (some not even videos. Just pdfs) selling for $400-1000+ (I also live in South Africa, so take $1 and times it by +/-15). As someone who does art for "fun" and doesn't make money from it (yet), the only time I'd even think of spending that sort of cash is for studying for my actual job. Thanks a lot Steven. Looking forward to dissecting this series.
Whoa! I tried this exercise and it resulted in probably the best shaded thing I ever made. And this type of "reactive" drawing is really appealing to me as well. Will look into the course for sure. Also gotta look more into the contrast hierarchy, I don't think I fully grasp it yet.
Absolutely superb! I've not drawn in years after going into computer art for a career, this just made me want to go out and get a pencil and paper again!
*deep sigh* What you teach us is so intriguing and valuable that i will not allow myself to let this course rot in "watch later", becaue i can't finish anything, but will watch it right away.
This is the type of content I’ve been searching for! I’ve really been having a hard time wrapping my mind around shading and this is helping so much, you’ve earned a subscriber and I will be purchasing the course!
Really like the way you breakdown shadows and discuss how light plays on a shape. I’m interested in the pen eraser, but did not get the brand. I want to learn to create shape and lines with an eraser.
Wow. I'm a tattoo artist and I've never smiled so much during a video saying: Yeah, yeah ! Of course ! Like a same comment down below : "I've never added something to the cart so fast" thanks for your great work !
recently discovered your channel, almost by accident, and your work and tutorial advice is fascinating, invaluable and inspiring - i really want to see what i can do after watching a few more of your videos, thank you
You really motivate me, thank you for your amazing work!!! I spent an entire semester at virtual college (because of covid) trying to get better and learn more about the essentials of drawing and painting, but I feel like I've learned more watching your video than the entire semester of art college on zoom. For real, I am very thankful! Keep going and keep on following your dreams!
thank you! I've been collecting images of artist's sketchbooks and see so many different techniques, from the hyper rendered style, to the soft painterly looking drawing, to the crosshatching techniques. All of them are so amazing but i don't even know how to place a hatch to make it look good.
This tutorial just popped up in my feed. I’m so glad it did. Thank you for the excellent video and making the course affordable. Subbed. I look forward to going through your content. 👍😊
Just picked up the full course. Been subscribed for a while but I missed this video at first and had your course brought to my attention by your Proko cameo. Keep up the great work man.
A wonderful and inspiring movie! Very interesting technique that I have to check! When it comes to shadows smoothness: While working on very small, realistic drawings, I noticed that the calmer and layered I put my pencil down at the beginning, the less time I have to spend adjusting for random differences in tone with an eraser. This helps a lot if you use references (e.g. in the case of photorealism), but it can be difficult if you want to sketch imaginative forms directly in the drawing at the very beginning, as it requires thinking from the end result side. Another thing I recommend is using soft pencils in places of light, but with very little pressure. Such lights go to the front, while hard pencils are easy to control but sometimes move the texture backwards. The difference is impossible to notice on the camera, but live it is quite clear! I love your work and after the video I wish I could draw more often!
Nice, I bought it and am downloading it, I'm going to try and apply it to digital art, as I'm doing more black and white art and am having problems with not adding enough shading, it's like I'm afraid of losing detail, but my drawings end up looking more flat, so I'm hoping this will help with that mental block.
You drawings are amazing and the imagination are at next level. Thank you very much for this informative video. If its ok to ask, what kind of paper and gsm do you recommend to get this layering, reason being for a beginner its very helpful. whenever i try a hard press blending with a paper stump, the paper gets saturated very fast and i can see all the glossy shine on it.
I'll definitely apply this knowledge when I do pencil work, but I wonder if I couldn't do the same when I do my digital "paintings." Paintings in quotes because I am not that good at them yet
14:50 I remember doing this to a drawing in class after a test and the teacher telling me to stop because the desk starting like squeaking. Hey, I got those gradients looking nice though
Interesting way to practice, sort of like automatic drawing but with shading principles. Unfortunate 3d software (Zbrush, Blender etc...) takes this much understanding out of the thought process for some newer artist. Checked out your work on IG really cool traditional work.
I loooooove this channel!! wow it’s amazing how good you are at explaining. do you ever start with the light values and mid tones , and add the shadow values last? being careful not to get the light values dirty tho by doing that. I feel I get the transition from light to dark faster and more more with Confidence by gradually darken the light forms Into darkness and shadow like I’m building the shapes. When I do the shadows first it tends to feel more complicated and “wrong”, like I’m adding a tribal to the form right away....it’s harder to merge dark tones into the light if you know what I mean so...light values first, do you do that? And do you have any tip to get the values as Awesome as yours despite starting with light values? I hope you understand what I’m trying to say😂 great channel! subbed💪Cheeers
Thank you! I do usually render from the darkness into the light, unfortunately I don’t have much experience with working the other way around in pencils. I feel like I really need to see the value of the shadows early to determine the overall shapes of the picture, not to mention the value range.
@@StevenZapataArt thank you for the answer, I’ve binged your videos and I learned a lot from them, I saw a video where you added a lot lighter shadows than I do, I’ve been doing them way to strict and dark. I'll admit it takes me a while to make a "flatted" shadow all the same value, but I don't find it that hard to get it right the first time... erasing seems to do more harm than good to the consistency of the entire shade. I find that using high quality paper and well made pencils of the correct value range helps, oddly a harder pencil makes it easier to control. My goto is a 2H. Anything above 40% I use that, anything below 40% gray gets an HB to start. It's rare to goto a 4H, and a 6H will cut the paper!
The same principles apply of course, it's just a very different technical application. I would say it's more than "slightly difficult", getting these effects with ink requires great finesse.

My materials are indeed in the full video. This is Bristol paper- smooth. Strathmore brand. I have used plate a couple times but it's too smooth for my taste.
