As a Finn I can proud say that the pronunciation is excellent! There is only a very little accent that gives away that you are not a Finn. You are both very talented singers.
It's been 14 years since this was uploaded, and 12 since I first watched it. It's still amazing and among my favorite internet things. Thank you both for this.
My god you guys are talented. And what struck me most was that you're from Canada! The way you pronounce scandic letters is amazing. All f**king thumbs up
Your pronunciation is very good! The were only few parts where a Finn heard that your not Finnish, and that's really something! :D I think you've done pretty good job in this video :)
I just wanted you guys to know that I come back to this video every so often(for the past 10 years) and your arrangement is still played in my head most days! So well done. And you guys did it before there was an official arrangement!!! Fantastic!!
i am so glad that you are covering this group if it were not for youguys i would have stayed ignorant... this group is by far one of THE BEST vocal groups. i grew up on TAKE 6 and all that cool stuff. but had no idea were to get this standard of singing. this is just as soulful as any TAKE 6. you guys are good too. like for real. GOOD WORK thank you! GOD BLESS
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually witnessed a high school Finnish choir from Sibelius perform this and many other pieces! Love the Finnish people sooo much! I still talk to them thank to Facebook...Anywhoo I have been looking for a way to purchase some sheetmusic and thank to you I can! Thank you so much! Love the harmonic dissonance!
This song was arranged by Essi Wuorela and Jussi Chydenius (both Rajaton members) for Rajaton to sing. They published through Sulasol, which is the company that sold me the music. I believe it is based on a Finnish folk tune - perhaps you're thinking of a different arrangement that is not available publicly.
@LauluTiia Just listened to them singing Kaipaava - wonderful! They have a nice, focused sound and I liked the little embellishments and extra pitches they added to the arrangment. Thanks!
@michaelsaunders77 Well yay I'm looking forward to it :D By the way, I'm a huge collegiate a cappella fan and I saw that you are in UPenn Dischord. I plan to order your CD soon. I've had the version of 'Suddenly I See' in my playlist for many months now, and I love it! Keep up the great work! Your a cappella inspires me! :)
@carmen75013 Thanks! I can't make up my mind about the head-synchronization. I ended up not doing it for my newest video because I thought it looked a bit cheesy here.
Thanks! It feels great for me to sing in Finnish. I read the translations to get a general feel for the meaning, but when I'm singing I don't understand what most of the individual words mean. I almost think the language sounds so beautiful that understanding the individual words would detract from the experience. I like the element of mystery!
Excellent job with the Finnish! :) I like your interpretations of Rajaton songs. We've done a lot of those with our choir but it just doesn't work as well with 30 people instead of 6...
Kiitos, Kati! We have a translation, so we know what the emotions in each phrase should be. But we haven't looked up the definitions of most of the individual words.
@ninoboy213 The most important tools were the microphone, the interface, and the software. I could have done this with any "large-diaphragm condenser mic", any USB-compatible interface with "phantom power", and any recording software with unlimited multitrack capability. My specific equipment is all listed in the underbar.
nice. your pronunciation is very good!. the difference comes in your own language i think its much softer then finnish. only word that i would say were too much off was ''hienoinen'' just before the guy comes along. u cant hear the h letter. but dont get me wrong i have sang this song many years and it was beautiful. and it brings your own style in it too.
Huippua, kaunista ja puhdasta laulua, ei haitannut, vaikka pieni vieras korostus kuuluikin kielessä. Beautiful - it didn´t matter that one could hear a very slight foreign accent in your Finnish. The lyrics are about missing your loved one very deeply....
I was scared this was going to be embarrassing to look and listen at But it was beautiful Though the dude underneath, I thought you were a nerd, but when you started singing, your expression was suddenly much more friendly nice ^^
@moimaailma Thanks! Let me know if you noticed any words or sounds that we're consistently getting wrong so that in my next video I can come closer to fooling some Finns!
@winlovefulness Haha - thanks for the insight there! I guess I should get her to lean towards hair down and slightly-overexposed lighting for the next video. How does that hotness compare to the other video (armottoman osa) in your opinion?
Hey, Andrea! Thanks for saying hi. Yeah, my soprano days are over. I won't be at the Christmas concert, but Lauren will. You were in Newfoundland where we first saw Rajaton, right?
Alwaysflashy, thanks for your concern. I've heard Belle Canto and the Chamber Choir. You guys are good. I'd like to know who arranged the version you sing. If it wasn't Jussi and Essi, then we're actually dealing with different arrangements of the same Finnish folk song. Thanks for the criticism as well. Yes, there are some tuning issues, but I thought it was pretty good quality for an amateur recording. I'd be interested to know which words were the most poorly-pronounced.
Wonderful. The only problem is that I really wanted to hear more second soprano in the mix. In this arrangement, second soprano is the star, because that's the part clashing with everyone else.
beautiful finnish, very impressed!! no offense, but americans in general and foreign pronunciation..well this was the best I've heard by far, let's put it that way, he he /swede
How did you get the sheet music for this song. Because I do believe it was written especially for one Canadian choir and you should not be able to have access to it.
Hahaa :D Really cool! well done. Love the facial expressions :) Your language is good, but needs a little work here and there, but have to say you did amazing considering how hard it is to learn.
Hahaha - thanks! I can't believe you don't like songs in your language - I think it's very beautiful, especially compared to English, which I find ugly for singing. Maybe it's because I don't understand the individual words I'm singing, so that adds an element of mystery for me.
No it is most definetly this arrangement because there was a big argument between two conductors when my choir went to sing this song. So I would take this video down because you are risking getting fines for copywriting reasons like we did.
As a Finn I can proud say that the pronunciation is excellent! There is only a very little accent that gives away that you are not a Finn. You are both very talented singers.
My recent Joy to the World video prompted my cousin Mark to send me here to see this song. I'm glad I saw it. Well done!
It's been 14 years since this was uploaded, and 12 since I first watched it. It's still amazing and among my favorite internet things. Thank you both for this.
So glad you're still enjoying it :)
Thanks!
My god you guys are talented. And what struck me most was that you're from Canada! The way you pronounce scandic letters is amazing. All f**king thumbs up
needless to say i have spent the last hour listening to that group. you guys rock
Fantastic! I'm sure Rajaton would be proud of both of you!
I keep watching and listening to this! Really one of my all time favorites on TH-cam.
Fantastic!!
thanks! One of my favorite old folk songs! A Finnish teacher (for foreigners) from Finland. - Keep on pushing yourselves forward - no limits... :)
i am so glad that you are covering this group if it were not for youguys i would have stayed ignorant... this group is by far one of THE BEST vocal groups. i grew up on TAKE 6 and all that cool stuff. but had no idea were to get this standard of singing. this is just as soulful as any TAKE 6. you guys are good too. like for real. GOOD WORK thank you! GOD BLESS
Words just can't describe, i'm looking forward to hear more.
I'm from Finland and I absolutely loved this! Thank you so much. :) Oh and your finnish is actually very good.
Very nice singing!
I love them both! very sweet people! nice, fresh, gentle, intelligent voices! thank you!
Very beautiful :) And you really have reached emotions that this song needs - like the finnish melancholy.
U re so awesome!! :D I can not believe that you don't speak Finnish, and still you can sing this so wonderfully well!
@TheRawrnstuff Thanks! Yep, I've probably listened to that song a hundred times.
I love this song, and this performance is brilliant ;)!
Wow I really love this video! Great job :). Love your voices. Amazing Finnish too!
Brilliant, absolutely awesome!! gives me goosebumps - ;) - thank you!!
I'm Finnish, you are awesome! Give me goosebumbs!

2023 and I am still enjoying this (and me being a Finn should have nothing to do with it, I think this should be enjoyed by everyone!9
You guys are so good! It was a pleasure to hear your voices!
Lauren and Michael, that was inspiring!
@LauluTiia Just listened to them singing Kaipaava - wonderful! They have a nice, focused sound and I liked the little embellishments and extra pitches they added to the arrangment. Thanks!
You're wonderful! This is just so beautiful - what a great idea.
I'll just assume that the one dislike was an accident.
Such pure tone and melody, beautiful.
This sounds awesome :) You both are very good singers!
I get chills, amazing talent!
Thanks! I'll be releasing another slow one with harmonies like this at some point in the next couple months.
Still listening in 2022 🔥🔥
Aww, that's the best compliment I can imagine. Thanks!
Just awesome!
Very good! I actually just came home from Rajaton's Christmas concert :)
Thanks, Dan! Your new collab is spot on, by the way!
And I checked the CD insert - no "r".
Fantastic! Think I'll need to get a Rajaton tee for myself maybe :-)
@carmen75013 Thanks! I can't make up my mind about the head-synchronization. I ended up not doing it for my newest video because I thought it looked a bit cheesy here.
They would be proud of you, this was truly beautiful :)
Lovely job! really well done. Sounds very close to Rajaton's original! Love it.
Kaunista
Thanks. I actually just watched your Over The Rainbow collab - it's really good!
Good job guys! I'm from Finland and I know that finnish is a hard language, but you did that very well! :)
Thanks! I'm really happy that I helped you find Rajaton.

What did u use to make this?? I really wanna make something like this :) awesome video! :)
Both of your finnish sounds great! You must've listened the song like crazy. o/
Wow Man this is AWESOME! And great job with the collaboration with a girl too :).
I believe the title is Karipaava, not Kaipaava... or am I wrong?
@GerbendeJong Haha - thanks! Sorry about my expressions when I wasn't singing - they DO look weird!
@ninoboy213 The most important tools were the microphone, the interface, and the software. Thanks for the pronunciation help! I'll make sure my Ds and Hs are clearer on future videos.
wonderful job!!

Fantastinen! En olisi voinut kuvitellakaan mitään tämän kaltaista! Olen myyty!

Hahaha - thanks! Is this a popular song for school choirs in Finland to sing?
I’ve learned at school choir ! But I’m from Brazil :)

You are both my heroes forever

well done. Love the facial expressions :) Your language is good, but needs a little work here and there, but have to say you did amazing considering how hard it is to learn.
Whoa, I didn't even realize you're not finns until I saw your name :D Great pronouncing!
Check out KYN - Rajaton :)

You're students of music in a conservatory or something like that?.
Thanks, I"ll be changing my itunes' title now haha.
That chord at 3:12 is amazing!
1:08, that gave me chills.
awesome.
No it is most definetly this arrangement because there was a big argument between two conductors when my choir went to sing this song. So I would take this video down because you are risking getting fines for copywriting reasons like we did.
