I'm a Finnish mother of a two-year-old boy. I played your song when I was pregnant with him and after he was born. It is today his favourite. He listens to it all quiet and very intensely. It is also the only song which will make him quiet down when we are having trouble going to sleep. Thank you very much!
+nitupu Wow, I don't know how to respond to this comment. That's the most wonderful thing I've read on TH-cam. I think I'll remember this for a long time. Thank you so much for sharing!
Great performance! I payed with trumpet this song arranged by Ossi Runne in 1978 at Unicef concert in Finlandia-Talo, Helsinski. President Urho Kekkonen came to shake my hand after the song because he told me it was his favourite finnish folk song. I was so proud of that shake ;)
Je suis subjugué, à la fois par la qualité d'interprétation, par la qualité de la musique (la cadence finale est extraordinaire ! ), et l'effet produit par la mise en forme vidéo. Merveilleuse expérience. Merci beaucoup Michael ! (I write in french in my language i feel me more authentic).
Congrats for singing in our (beautiful yet difficult) language! ^^ Your voice is wonderful and fascinating so I really think it suits this song perfectly. Quite a challenge you had there... I was like "WOW" when I watched your video! Beautiful!
This is so great. My top favorite finnish folk song and you have the excellent talents in singing, music and in modern technology. of the points from 0 to 100 this is infedility like rajaton :)
I am in the Indianapolis Children's Choir and we are singing this song and we watched this for the demonstration. Our conductor who is very world renown was incredibly impressed. And Mr. Leck knows good :)
Wow, the work you did is awesome, I'm studying music, I'm a choral and opera singer, and I love what you did, a lot of dynamics, a lot of precision and beautifullness. Greetings
@iloirtimusiikista Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Yes, I learned the pronunciation mostly from listening to Rajaton. I also did a bit of research online.
The words are absolutely beautiful! It's a story about a girl at a river in a beautiful summer night crying her heart out longing someone who she had lost. Very challenging to translate to match the debth.
It's very impressive! I hope you do more old Finnish songs. Unfortunately, the tendency in Finland it to sing more and more songs in English. I guess it's good for communication, but the whole world will soon sound the same. So it's great that a non-Finn takes up the cause of singing in Finnish. Since it's my native language, I think it sounds wonderful in certain kinds of songs because it's so rich in vowels. Good luck with your vocal career!
@ColdBloodedIncarnate Thanks! The mic in the video is an SM58. But I think most of the takes that ended up in the audio use my M-Audio Luna large-diaphragm condenser mic.
@Dendron88 Thanks! Every time I listen to Rajaton's version I crank up the volume at the end to blast that last phrase of mind-blowing chord progressions.
@StewNWT Yes, I agree. That ending really deserves more oomph My mixing skills still aren't what they could be. As I understand it, in professional recordings the volume doesn't really vary much. The illusion of volume change is accomplished with clever mixing, EQ, etc.
2) 'What pain and trouble, your heart is digging, which doesn't give peace, even in the heart of night?' And she answered: 'That's the sadness troubling me, that never's coming back that ship, where my darling travelled, across the open waves: (he) left me, and closed the sadness in my heart.' She kept watching still for a while, saw there on the waves a cloud, reddish. A cloud it wasn't, at all. (She) recognized her darling's ship. Praised be now, the Creator of the Earth and of Heaven!
@timomastosalo Thanks for your help with the pronunciation! I'll make sure to keep my ä vowels wide enough: I love when Rajaton sings a powerful chord on that vowel sound
@Inkurnau Thanks so much - it feels great to hear that! Yes, I read a translation of the poem to understand what I was singing. Where can I listen to Kuusisto's version?
@iloirtimusiikista Thank you! And yes, I agree - that vowel richness is wonderful. In my opinion it makes it much more enjoyable to sing in Finnish and to listen to Finnish music.
@Arishtat Thanks! I'm happy to hear that! I'd like your advice on the letter L. Should I be saying it with the tip of my tongue farther back in my mouth, or just lighter and with a shorter sound?
@mrkmrk0369 Thanks! You're right, I really love singing Rajaton. As I understand it, Finnish is actually very easy to pronounce compared to English: in Finnish, I think each letter makes only one sound. I listened carefully to Rajaton's recording in order to get my pronunciation as accurate as possible.
@michaelsaunders77 OK, for the past hour I've been saying words that begin or end with an L, or have one in the middle, trying to figure out how I say them. In general I would say that L is very light, the tip of the tongue touching the top of the mouth just behing the teeth. Then again, when singing pronunciation is used for musical effect, like the first word of this song. The L in 'Läksin' is always pretty strong. Hope this helps.
You don't speak Finnish?! Whaat? Your pronunciation is perfect! You have gained a new fan. Have you ever been to Finland? How did you hear about Rajaton?
@RoisteIsAinmDom Thanks! Hopefully I didn't screw up your Finnish with any mispronouncings! And nice guitar work - I bet there aren't a lot of people who cover Rajaton in that style!
@obsidianfinger, answer cont'd Software: I use Steinberg Cubase LE4 to record, edit, and mix audio. I think it's really good. For video, I edit everything together in Corel VideoStudio Pro X3, which I don't like very much. I'm planning to switch to the Adobe Premiere suite. I memorized this song, but I think I used a stand with sheet music in most of my previous videos. I think it looks better when I'm not looking down. cont'd...
1) I left in a summer night to visit that valley where I listened the day. Where the little birds sing, the grouses too, they peal. And my heart seeks rest and peace. I looked down towards the waters, I saw on the shore a girl, lovely and young. Who sat and wept, watched along the waves. And she was so sad all the time. 'What are you crying about, poor you, on the shore, alone? And from your eyes tears are falling, even now.'
@michaelsaunders77 - wide... Ok, if there was a problem (mostly not when Ä was stressed), it was towards pronouncing 'hat towards 'hut/hot' (='hat' in Finnish orthography) - so the the slip (when happening) was towards the BACK of your mouth. For example: ...ylistetty nyt Luoja maan sekÄ taivaan - heard almost like 'seka' (='mix, confusion-')) -But, hear this, there's not much to correct! :)
@obsidianfinger Thanks! Compression: on this video I didn't use compression because it was pretty slow and easy to control my volume. For my video Armottoman Osa, I needed to use compression because there were many fast, accented syllables that would have sounded too jarring otherwise. I did use some equalization - changing the balance of frequencies for different parts. Eg. I weight more of the high-frequency stuff (consonants) to the solo to help bring the words forward. cont'd...
@obsidianfinger, answer cont'd #2 Process: 0. Learn the song 1. Make a midi track for pitch and tempo 2. Record a part (usually bass first) 3. Listen 4. Re-record until I'm satisfied (3-25 times) 5. Combine different sections of each take 6. Repeat from step 2 for each part 7. Mix (adjust levels, reverb, eq, panning) 8. Sync each video with the mix 9. Export and upload Thanks for the questions! Let me know if you're curious about anything else!
Hello, It is really nice work :D I have sung this song when I was in Finland. The meaning and the melody meet perfectly. but pronunciation could be better :) great work
Wow, you just made my day! Your choir and director are fantastic, and I'm honoured to have been the demo. I actually sang in the Toronto Children's Chorus for many years and I think I sang a couple of Mr. Leck's arrangements. Also, it's great that you're singing Laksin! This song is really fun (and tricky for a choir). I'm guessing you're in one of the higher level ICC choirs. Have you sung any other Rajaton music? Anyway, thanks so much for the comment! I wonder how Henry Leck came across it.
Hey Michael I saw this fairly recently posted jazzy old 50's version and was reminded of your fine video and thought I'd share this with you: Brita Koivunen: Läksin minä kesäyönä käymään
Thanks Catherine! I agree - I think if I actually spoke Finnish I might not enjoy this piece quite as much, because the true meaning of the words couldn't be as beautiful as the music suggests.
a Finnish teacher (for foreigners) rejoices - very clear, only few clitches in pronounciation (ä - a with the dots - try to keep it ALWAYS the same as in hAt, thAt, sAd (=sääd) in RP, even UNstressed: that was off few times, as something that strikes the ear) -But this I say to push you forward ever inquisitively, without limits, borders, ... :) I would dare to say your accent is roughly 90% (or more) Musically, I'm just your fan :) Educ. & training tells. Now, have collective fun doing this!
@michaelsaunders77 Very good!! I think "L" should be slightly more "relaxed", and yes, slightly further back in the mouth. Another letter that is slightly off is "Ä" which is a tad too close to "A"... so I suppose it should be a bit more "tense" or "tight", with mouth open slightly wider. But this is just nit-picking for perfection (since you were asking :-). Your pronounciation is excellent!
This was an awesome video, like were your other ones as well! Your pronunciation is really good as well, only some things I'd like to suggest you train a bit: your u is too far in the front. The Finnish u is really at the back, so your u can get mistaken for a y. Also the ä sounds like an a at some point, it should sound like the vowel in 'cat' for example. If you ever do one of these again, you should do Kivinen Tie, it's my favorite song by Rajaton
Very beautiful! You are very talented, your have a great voice and your pronunciation is top notch. Amazing! To help you with the L, try pronouncing it with the tip of your tongue fairly close to your front teeth. Finnish L sounds flat. The letter ä sounds very much like the letter a in the english words "rat", "flat", "cat" etc. (does this make any sense? =D) Anyway, wonderful work and thank you for posting.
I agree with Arishtat that you have excelent pronounciation!! I however did not notice the L problem. My attention was drawn to the Ä pronounciation in some words like näin.. in the part where you say näin rannalla tytön.. and Sepä ... in sepä surullinen vaivaa..at the very beginning you pronounce one of your K a bit to harshly. Make sure you are pronouncing all the double letters such as double vouls and double consonants. like in surullinen (double L). Just a bit of nit picky advice.
Well. a foreigner can always improve the pronunciation, but this is close to perfect :) I lost only 2 or 3 words when listening him - and the rest of this didn't have much alien flavour neither
very good, once you learn to roll your R's (in Finish the letter r must be rolled every time!)and refine your pronunciation of the letter k. you will bring your finish pronunciation to a new level!

If you want to improve, have a listen to the original and compare the L's. Personally I think don't bother. It's good enough as it is.
Don't give in to that pessimism :) Check the lyrics first before making up your mind about them. Hahah. I translated them for you to test yourself - to get disappointed or to enjoy!

Oh my freaking goodness, you are AMAZING!! And your Finnish pronunciation is very clear and correct, fantastic!! :3 I subbed!
Marvelous!!! You really can sing and have internalized our melancholy! Greetings from Finland, Joni
Wonderful work! Greetings from Finland!

this is so beautifully done. HOW ON EARTH do you have so little subscribers? an absolute joy to listen to.
Amazing performance! Great vocals. You could be mistaken for a Finn. Very perfect pronunciation. Hats off to you sir!

i'm a big fan of rajaton, and your work is AWESOME !!!
really great job man \o/
I'm a Finn and first i thaught you are finnish! :D That is completely possible that i wouldn't undestand anything ;)) Good work!
Very good. Beautiful Finnish pronunciation! :)

you blend soo well!!!! lol :D... Very good
@zunzipop Thanks! I agree, that last verse is great. Jussi (the arranger) used such wonderful harmonies!
Michael this is awesome!!! I love all the Rajaton covers that you have posted! I will I see you @ camp on sat???
simply awesome

@lincomberg314 Thanks - I think blending is probably easier when I have to blend with my own voice ;)
@iloirtimusiikista Thank you! And yes, I agree - that vowel richness is wonderful. In my opinion it makes it much more enjoyable to sing in Finnish and to listen to Finnish music.
@MsKeilah16 Thanks! I probably spent around 30 hours on this one - more than any of my previous videos.
@Arishtat Thanks! I'm happy to hear that! I'd like your advice on the letter L. Should I be saying it with the tip of my tongue farther back in my mouth, or just lighter and with a shorter sound?
Awesome!
@Alkelei Well I'm working on another collab. It'll be my first non-Rajaton video.
@loolog I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the advice, especially the "u" tip - I haven't heard that critique yet.

If you like rajaton and you live in Canada you should check out Kaleid choral festival. I actually got to perform with rajaton because of this
