This is a real thing in therapy. Jacques Lacan really harped on this.
Basically he believed and I believe that people essentially leak their real thoughts and feelings in their language, somewhat like a Freudian slip, but it’s not the same thing.
The direct content of the language that patients use means more than they might be aware of.

James Gandolfini really is able to capture the roller coaster of emotions someone has when they actually do some serious self exploration about how they feel. He goes from leaning back on his homophobia , to slightly softening his stance, to denying it was a shock, and then ultimately he realizes that he personally doesn't care all that much.

except now we have their whole lgbt regime forcefully putting that into child media where children should be learning to read, spell, math and other activities appropriate for them. but nah they are more concerned about teaching hand job techniques to elementary schoolers. hopefully with this new transgender bill, all those predatory adults that lust after children will be rightfully fired and arrested.

Honestly, this is a pretty accurate depiction of how Americans feel about LGBTQ things.
It's like: "Eww, that's super weird!"
To: "Eh, I don't get it but they aren't bothering me. Whatever, I guess."
But then rightwing media have to blow things out of proportion and make it some kind of moral crisis when it never was one.

That's the sad part - it's not something he cares about, but it's something expected of him by his social group. He portrays the character so well, he's so exhausted by the inner politics of his circle. Guy does his job and does it better than most of the other grunts, but has to get whacked to maintain the status quo.

It’s great to see how Tony instinctively starts going off on a homophobic rant because of the way he was raised and how he’s expected to act around his crew, while also admitting he doesn’t actually care about it when prodded further. It’s another example of how Tony knows what he does is wrong and simply doesn’t care. He doesn’t think Vito should get hurt because he’s gay, but in the end he signs off on the hit just to satisfy the others.

This is actually a pretty great example of how to talk to casually bigoted people. • @benjamin6194
      @benjamin6194 3 ปีที่แล้ว +83

This. These days most "woke" people are just looking for an excuse to yell and get angry and virtue signal about how progressive they are. But that only causes the bigot to double down on their positions. You are more likely to change minds if you don't say much at all, and ask a couple of questions.

    • @gordonscott6180

@@benjamin6194 The one point I would disagree with you on is that "most" so called woke people are like this. In my personal experience, the majority of socially progressive people (which is basically all "woke" is supposed to mean) are very willing to engage in constructive rhetoric and give people a chance to learn and grow. Unfortunately, the most shrill, self righteous, and confrontational voices get amplified disproportionately by the sensationalist nature of our culture. It may look like most people on the left are insufferable wokescolds, but I don't believe it's true.

@@gordonscott6180 I mean if you want to replace the word "most" with "many" I don't mind. "Many woke people are just looking for an excuse to yell and get angry and virtue signal how progressive they are."
Better? But it's still a very common thing, no? We agree that this is a very common phenomenon I am describing, right? Lots of them just want to be SEEN being progressive, by yelling and getting angry and attacking someone, as opposed to actually changing minds, or really changing anything.
And if I want to split hairs, I don't think of "woke" has meaning the same thing as socially progressive. "Woke" means tribalism. Defining everything as this group vs that group. So it's men vs women, white vs black, gay vs straight. That's how woke people see the world. Unlike progressives, woke people can't ever coexist peacefully, they have to make war on what they perceive as the opposing tribe. That's how I think of "woke" anyways. It's a fairly new movement. The kind of people who read books about white fragility while saying that women are smarter than men and should rule the world.

Nobody owes you a logical discussion to help guide you away from your bigotry. If someone chooses to, bless their hearts, we need more people with that kind of patience in the world. But sometimes people just want to tell bigots to f**k off, and that's perfectly valid too. Geez, imagine thinking people from groups that are discriminated against owe it to bigots to teach them a better way. Sometimes the person from the marginalized group that screams and yells, does so because this is their upteenth encounter of the same kind that same day, and they don't have the patience to have a civil conversation with yet another bigot.

Before Dexter, before Don Draper, before Walter White...there was Tony Soprano. The ORIGINAL television antihero. I’m a gay man myself, and I love this scene because of its brutal honesty and ambiguity. Tony’s caught between his knowledge of Vito as a good person and his obligations as a mob boss to stamp out perceived “weakness.” There’s also an undercurrent of anticapitalism here: not only does Tony cite the old guard and their “major dollars” as a reason for punishing Vito, but his final lines outright name “your house, the shit you own” as the reason that it’s hard to maintain positivity and kindness. I honestly believe that this was one of, if not THE, best TV dramas ever created, anchored by the incomparable James Gandolfini. Amazing...

The conflict between his humanity and upholding the power of his brand and image as a mob boss is ironically like being in the clouset. The draining stress of maintaining the responsibilities others have burdened him with is the core to his problems and violence.

The Sopranos is such a well written show. I can't get over how amazing it is. I can watch these clips for days. Might have to just go back and watch the whole series for a third time.

I know that Tony soprano is a character on the show but I have to admit I have never related more to a human being in my life. He's sitting here trying to understand the world around him and his place in it. he's trying to figure out what he really thinks versus what other people have told him. It's a difficult thing to do. I was raised to hate gay people and then one of my best childhood friends turned out to be gay the whole time. He didn't reveal it until his junior year of high school and we had been friends since early middle school. I had no idea. When he came out of the closet social turmoil swept everyone in our little circle. He lost many friends..... But he never lost me. Even though I was told I had to leave him behind even hate him, I just couldn't do it. And then I was only one of three of his friends he retained. There were at least 18 or so in our circle. I'm a married heterosexual man but I can't hate another man for his homosexuality. I just can't bring myself to hate someone. Whether you believe it's a choice, a disease, or just another way of life it doesn't justify hate.
