5:59 Those soup bowls are from a long-running Esso petrol station promotion in the '80s!!!!! My parents has them too and also the Shell petrol station collection!
Thank you for this. I remember when I was a kid loving this soup. So sad, but Campbells' soup used to have a scotch broth, but its discontinued.. I always liked it with barley and dried peas added. And I think it had mutton in it. (Mutton, unheard of here in the part of the U.S. where I live). My Scottish Mum has a recipe for lentil soup which she made with red lentils, green onions, turnips, carrots and a ham bone. All the veggies were grated (by hand before food processors). I make it all the time. One of my favorites. I love your videos especially hearing your voice----reminds me of my Mum. And you have recipes for things long forgotten that she used to make. Be well!!!
I love vegetable soup too and batch it up in the freezer for work or weekend lunches. I use 4 carrots, 2onions, 2leaks, 2 celery stalks, handful of frozen peas, 2 vegetable stock cubes, 3 tablespoons of lentils and about 5 or 6 of pearl barley. Mine is really thick.
Fairly sure these bowls were a staple in most Scottish homes! And as a kid I got right riled if I couldn’t get the proper bowl for the type of soup I was eating! Sure we had tomato, chicken, mushroom, lentil and scotch broth! Thanks again Cheryl for your channel, love seeing old favourite recipes from my childhood reminding me of mum n grans culinary delights
I watch all your videos from Canada . I left Scotland when I was 17 . My mum and Gran made wonderful soup , unfortunately I never watched them make soup . I’m now 76 and would you believe it I’ve never made soup except when I just got married . I thought being newly wed wife I would make some soup . Unbeknown to me I thought you added ALL the ingredients . I added. Full packet of lentils , peas whatever . Lots of potatoes . I put everything in a pot . To make the story short , I ended up pouring everything into my sink . I had 3 times the amount I started with . 🤔My husband came home and I was in tears , he said what’s wrong with you , I said look in the sink . lol I never heard the end of it . 😂
That looks so good and tasty. I love soups, thanks for sharing your recipe. It’s autumn now here in Canada and time to make soups and stews. I’ll be trying this for sure. Cheers!
I'm so glad I found this channel. I joined a medieval reenactment group, and as an American of Scottish heritage, I'm playing a highlander. The Scots were the largest and healthiest people in Europe (averaging over 2 meters tall, and living well into their 80's). I was so sad to find out that it's because all they ate was oatmeal and the occasional leek ROFL (as a vegetarian this made me giggle). I think I'm going to "lean" on you to add some variety to our campfire cooking. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. It means a lot to us.
Best veg soup recipe I've seen in a long while - I love lentils and I need to eat more veg, so thanks for sharing! :) Hope you're feeling better soon, Cheryl.
I use to have that same mug. Gone after too many moves. Still have the Soupe A L'oignon :) looking at it now :D Definitely will take a screen grab for old times sake. and make the soup. thx for the memories! (said in Bob Hopes Voice) LOL
Always do my soup with a couple of decent Ham Houghs too. Everybody loves the soup and the dogs do too, ... ( Baxter & Rory (( Miniature Schnauzers )) , go mental for the Ham Hough Bones.) Also use a Scotch Broth Mix for my pulses. Love a thick Broth me!!!! The thicker the better!!!!! MMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! :) :) :) I don't use rice though. Don't put Salad in it either!!!!! lmao ( Parsley!! ) Enjoying your recipes. Loving it, loving it, loving it!!!! Thanks. :)
Aww you poor thing Cheryl. You sound really choked up with the cold 😷 get a good load of this lovely soup down you. As my father used to say , it will put hairs on you chest lol😜 looks lovely and so simple to make. Have a lovely few days at Arran . Enjoy ! Xx
I love a big bowl of homemade lentil and veg soup with a Wee roll and butter mmmm, this is similar to my recipe but I'm gonna give it a go your way, I don't sautée my veg I just bung it all in and boil it away for a couple hours , hope you feel a bit better soon x
Oooohhh, this looks so lovely! This is the time of year when I really get into making soups, stews and chilis and am always looking for something new to try! I'm going to have to try this! Thank you so much!!!
I sometimes cook a bit of breast or neck of lamb with it. Start off the lamb first of all in water. When it is cooked pull the meat off the bones, chop and return to the pan with the vegetables. And pearl barley instead of rice. My mouth is watering now and it is 3.30 am and I'm in bed ! Insomniac. Thanks again for another lovely recipe.
I boil a smoked gammon joint for stock. and then cut it into chunks and add to soup, lush !!! I always use barley as well, must have barley ! Just subscribed.
Hi Cheryl , do you cook for a living ?? Your very confident and really seem to love it , we call your soup in Wales cawl most people put lamb in it my mam put beef sadly i cannot digest meat so i do one very similar to yours , I just asked my son would he like rice or small pasta in it next time the look i got was priceless kids hey , i love the channel keep the good work going i also now have been asked by my daughter for square sausage so i'm going to use your recipe cross your fingers for me , Thanks Gill.
hey Cheryl, it's Lu on Ryan's YT. this is a soup i would love to try! I would have to fix a meat dish as well because Ryan isn't a soup person at all!! i think this will be my first soup of the winter this year.
Was gonna say you sound full of the cold lol....cannae whack home made soup......get well soon x ps bacon and tomato rolls are the bizz.....I love them
This is a good (almost) chuck it all in soup. Not keen on lentils so will omit them. I could put some pearl barley in and leave out the rice but I think the barley makes it a bit gooey. I like it chunky so no stick blender. I am wondering how buch the dooze will affect your narrative cumb fridee. - AaaahChoo! Bless you.
If you were gonna use barley, how much would you have used for that amount? It’s finally starting to cool off over here in the states. Looking forward to some soup. Your scotch broth looked scrumptious ♥️
I was going to say this but you beat me to it. In America and Europe swede is called 'rutabaga' apparently. Weird! I also read it's used as cattle feed in Europe. Lucky old cows! I love swede although it's a bugger to peel.
That soup is perfect in winter time to warm you up. Thank you for sharing. May I ask you something? Do you live at the Isle of Arran? Kind regards from Germany to bonnie Scotland ♥

In the mid 1950's, Campbell's scotch broth was my favourite tinned soup followed by chicken and rice.
I love soup you can really feel it doing you good especially in colder weather.
Oh no, I hope you feel better soon. Thank you for sharing this recipe! I L❤VE soup.
Oh we have soup mugs sort of similar to these, they're great - I use them all the time for soup

I am looking forward to making this beautiful soup. Do you have a recipe for mincemeat pie filling? (Without real meat?)
In the middle of the Med and the heat is a killer, but still going to have this today complete with Bacon butties.....
Have you ever thought of putting out a cook book ? I’m saving a lot online ! But knowing me I’ll never find them. 💕
If you were gonna use barley, how much would you have used for that amount? It’s finally starting to cool off over here in the states. Looking forward to some soup. Your scotch broth looked scrumptious ♥️
My granny made it just like this
Wow uv inspired me, heading to morrisons now for the ingredients, why do all your sandwiches look so good, open a cafe I'll be there
😁😁😁
What you call turnip, we call swede, turnips are small green and white veg where I live x
I was going to say this but you beat me to it. In America and Europe swede is called 'rutabaga' apparently. Weird! I also read it's used as cattle feed in Europe. Lucky old cows! I love swede although it's a bugger to peel.
Big giant purple ones proper neeps
Cheryl, can you please do us Cullen Sklnk ?!!!

Looks lovely. Are lentils supposed to be soaked overnight like dried beans?
Carole Winstead I’ve never needed to soak them Carole 😊 although my Mother did! Thanks for watching
This looks yummy...I would like a bit of celery in it also. Do you ever use beef stock with this one or just keep it vegetarian? Have a Blessed day.
Hi Margaret :) Sometimes I use chicken or ham stock...never used beef in this soup, I'll give it a try though! Thanks for watching
That soup is perfect in winter time to warm you up. Thank you for sharing.
May I ask you something? Do you live at the Isle of Arran?
Kind regards from Germany to bonnie Scotland ♥
Hi Karin :) We don't live on Arran...we are about 50 minutes away by ferry...we just love it though and go over quite often. Thanks for watching.
I'm rubbish at making soup. It either ends up too watery or too thick. Wash your leeks through a sieve, makes life easier.
I’m so lazy when it comes to cutting veg, I buy the already cut ones 🤣
Hi there :) I use pre cut onions and things from time to time too! Fab time saver. Thanks for watching
For those with a thumbs down, change channels.
Barley would be good !
Can use knorr chicken stock or veggie one
Hi Hollie :) It was the Knorr one that I used...just use double the recommended amount. Thanks for watching
Lovely looking soup mmm love the bowels I still have mine
How about a proper mutton broth proper mutton old school
Very enjoyable
Do you have a recipie for scotch broth
I remember leek growing contests every year. Grown men would go and pee on other people's leeks! It was that important.
Hi Elizabeth :)Oh I love that story! Perhaps that's where the phrase "I'm going for a leek/leak" comes from? Thanks for watching :)
I do mine in my Electric Pressure Cooker Takes 20 mins
Can I cook this in a slow cooker ?
Hi Maureen :) yes absolutely! I would do this on low for about 6 hours
Wash yar Leeks,Nae Blendin for me,A Like it Lumpy,Lubbly Jublly Sherl.
I don’t add any oil with my onions when making soup.
I’m no happy with that flat leaf parsley. Get good old curly xx
