    Hey folks! Tonight for tea I made this absolutely delicious ham hough & lentil soup :) This is such a popular soup in Scotland and I remember my mother and granny making this when I was wee. The ingredients are very simple but they produce an absolutely superb end result :) Everything I used will be listed below.

    Making a pot of hame made soup tomorrow .. I always use sautéed leeks instead of onion and grated carrot as well as chunks..I love it so thick that it'll "stick tae yer ribs" as my family always says 😆.

    My Mom used to make a variant of this with split peas . Mom would use the bone left over from a roast of ham, especially if there was a good amount of meat left on the bone. This was my favourite soup. Chopped celery goes well in this, including the leaves.
    We often had roasts with a bone in or bones to be left over (ham, beef, chicken, turkey) , so soup could be made afterwards. Ham bones became split pea soup, beef bones became beef-barley soup, poultry bones became chicken/turkey-vegetable soup. I have in turn made all of these for my kids.

    • @meatwad1
      @meatwad1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I make all kinds of bean and ham soups--split pea, bean and ham using great northern beans and so on. I use smoked pork neck bones, smoked ham hocks or shanks or a third or a half of a ham steak or any combination of these. Any type of smoked pork will do. I buy whichever is least expensive at the particular store I'm at. Sometimes the store won't have smoked neck bones or ham hocks and I'll have to buy fresh neck bones or hocks. I always make sure I have some smoked pork in my freezer, so when I have a piece of pork that isn't smoked, I'll compensate by putting a few drops of liquid smoke on the meat or half a teaspoon of smoked paprika and put a piece of smoked pork in the pot. I also buy packs of beef bones and keep them in the freezer. They're good for things like the Russian dish known as shchi or Polish rosol.

    As a Scot who’s lived a long way from home for many years now, I just love you’re videos. They are often recipes for something I’d completely forgotten about yet is instantly so familiar, like this lentil soup. It’s exactly like the soup my mum used to make on a regular basis, the only difference being she would add a can of whole tomatoes near the end of cooking…. My ham hock broth has just now come to a simmer on the stove, and I can hardly wait!

    I made this yesterday and made a few tweaks. I didn't have fresh parsley, so I used half a cup of dried parsley. I used 2 smoked pork neck bones and about a third of a ham steak. And I added 1/4 cup of lemon juice. The results are delicious. This will be one of my regular meals. Thank you for this wonderful recipe. Regards from America.

    Braw! I was sort've weaned on soup. Growing up we'd have it at least at two meals a day, and the pot of soup got better as the days went on.
    I recently bought myself one of those Instant Pots & its sent me off on a soup making rampage, making all sorts of different soups. Though I still think a pot of well made Scots Broth/Hame Made Soup is pretty hard to beat. As well as being really comforting & "stick tae yer ribs" its one of the best & most economical ways to feed yourself & family.
    My favourite bits in the soup have always been the pearl barley & the leek pinwheels. 🥣😋
    Great video, always enjoy them, hope you & yours have a grand weekend.

    My Mum's favourite home made soup - in fact her speciality. I remember being in Liverpool city centre when Mum was about 70. In a cafe, probably for coffee and toast, she spotted this soup on the menu. Of course she had to have it but what a disappointment! "There's no 'am in this, girl" she murmured to me. You can't beat home made.

    Oh wow, such memories you've given me. 🤗 My Mam used to make this when I was a bairn, 60 years ago, and we loved it on a dark winter night, with doughy baps to dip, just scrumptious. And yes, it only gets better the next day. 😊 Thank you for sharing your recipe, I'm going to have to make this myself soon once the nights really draw in, and think of days gone by. 💞

    Up to the moment when you added onion, I thought you'd nicked my recipe ! 😄🥣
    But I use leek. And yellow peas. (The dried ones wich need to soak over night).
    It's a Norwegian/Swedish lifesaver during winter...
    Scandi tip ; stir a teaspoon of (sweet grainy) mustard into each serving ! 👌
    Stay safe and well.

    • @kc3654
      @kc3654 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We call it hock too 😄 its just in Scotland said this way. By the way definitely use dry red/green split lentils and use the water from the ham hock stock of a hock you have cooked yourself instead of precooked ham it really is what makes this 🍲 soup ❤️ ..

    Love this type of soup; my mum & grandmas made it all the time. They used to add a chopped leek instead of onion, and split peas for texture & bulk as well as the red lentils; sometimes butter beans if available (they break right down and make the soup really creamy). Pearl barley is another option; thickens the soup up & makes it even more filling. You could feed a big family for pennies if you got a ham bone from the butcher after he’d carved the meat off it 😋

    Cheryl, you out did yourself on this one. Just made and had for lunch with some homemade brown Irish soda bread. So, so good. And you’re right, the white pepper is a real nice touch. I hate to say it, but better than the recipe my mum taught me. As always, thanks for providing a little taste of home in Washington DC. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸
