So many of our wonderful songs come from great pain or disabilities. Turn You Eyes Upon Jesus has always been a favorite of mine!! My mom would hum it around the house often. My dad was an old fashioned song leader. Mom played the piano in our church. I have always loved this hymn!!! It means so much to me!!! In times of great distress of chronic illness since I was 25-I am now 62. My dad would often tell the stories behind the hymns we sang---I did not know this one!!! I love the old hymns and their stories!!! They are ingrained in me. I also love the newer songs, but the old hymns hold a special place in my heart!!! So much like Fanny J. Cosby.

These hymns have a great meaning engraved in them. That's why even though they were written long ago, it still speaks and comforts us.

I have shared the words of this song so many times. It is a beautiful reminder that no matter how much we we are suffering in this fallen and faulty world, if we turn our eyes upon Jesus, our struggles truly will not be worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us. ( Romans 8:18) Written by Paul the Apostle who lwas no stranger to suffering, he bore it all rather than give in and turn his back on his Lord and Savior. In 2nd Corinthians he shares what those sufferings are: hunger, thirst, danger, imprisonment, torture and persecution. Along with 3 shipwrecks (one of which involved a night and a day adrift in the ocean before being rescued), repeatedly flogged, beaten, and stoned. These are just a few, the final upshot was (according to bible historians) he had debilitating eye problems. So much so that like the woman in this video he was forced to have someone write down the letters of encouragement, correction and love he frequently wrote to the other churches. None of these things happened to him until after he became a follower of Jesus Christ! There are many such stories about how people of God have suffered for their faith. And yet none of them turned back from following God! It’s the light of His glory and grace!

Thank you for enlightening us in depth about Paul, it shows how precisely you have understood the meaning of the hymn. Yes when we turn our eyes upon Jesus we receive our miracles. God bless!

It’s a beautiful story. I’m wondering how she read the pamphlet if she was blind.

I’m afraid you got the history all mixed up, Miriam Huffman is much more accurate
