Pay per mile Road Tax. Are we being sold a lie (as we already have it for fossil fuels).

If PPM is brought in then expect to pay Annual Road tax as well. So fuel duty, road fund tax, VAT and the PPM. Yeah there will be at least four piles of tax to pay.

I was thinking about this the other day. If they reduce fuel costs but add ppm and it works out the same then happy days, unlikely though.
I agree ppm is coming and has been in the works ever since EVs started rolling of the production line, probably before. There's no way the government is allowing people to drive for less cash. Implementation and enforcement is the key though specially when dealing with older vehicles that don't have all the fancy tech in them already.

But if they drop fuel duty, will that be seen as an incentive for EV drivers to switch back?

@@NatsNackersYard I've always thought it was to be smug about being all eco friendly. Although there are probably people who dropped cash on a full price EV and thought they would get it back in fuel savings.

I have a couple of bikes that are registered as historic. So no tax or mot. Be interested to see how that would work.

One to think about, what about if it's an app and you use a bus/taxi/tram or passenger in someone else's car ??? Do you pay for them

Hello Nat, its a very interesting subject.
From an environmental point of view (not from a taxation point)
any measure that stops people burning fossil fuels, especially in built up areas is going to be a step forward.
I live in the West Midlands and Iv never known the roads so busy. Another matter is the large numbers of big heavy off road vehicle being driven.
No matter what your point of view its pretty obvious that VED and fossil fuels at just £1.60 odd per litre are not encouraging motorists to drive less, if they were the roads would be half empty

I am not sure what 'encouraging to drive less' looks like? Without a viable alternative there is no choice.
