That had the immediate effect that the poor family paid about three times more tax for their decrepit Diesel Passat than the rich guy paid for his 350hp V8 car. That was an absolute nightmare. I had to get rid of my beloved old Mercedes W123 because they wanted more than 1000 DM tax for it per year. Before the "punish tax" it cost about 250 DM. And it is still like that. You have to pay about 35 Euros per 100cc of displacement for an Euro 3 Diesel car in Germany.

@@tommymorrison6478 How about those people who made millions out of PPE contracts from their mates in gov give some back so we don't contribute to their sudden new found wealth at the expense of normal taxpayers, that's part of the reason we have such debt.
in France the VED is automatically added to the price of fuel, and has been for years... so grandad who uses his car once a week pays very little (as it should be) but people doing thousands of miles per year (and thus wearing roads out more and usually polluting more) pay a representative share. PLUS no admin BS from the DVLA, no paper reminder letters, and no way to avoid it, so no need to pay for systems to monitor VED. I just can't fathom why this isn't in place here...
I've been saying this for years. More you use the more you pay. I have 2 cars that are over £400 to tax per year and they each only do 1000 miles per annum. The one I use the most ( around 5000 miles) only cost £20 to tax Ridiculous system
Although I agree with this logic, those of us that live outside of cities (due to the cheaper house prices) will need to pay more VED in order to live/function a normal existence which is also unfair. We also pay a lot of duty on fuel already, so surely we're already paying per mile. Happy to have a robust debate on this.
The UK authorities are working on a better system........road pricing, so, you pay per mile, you pay fuel tax at the pump, and you pay VED. As usual.......rip off Britain.

The Carbon ratings is utter B.S. A few years ago I had an MG ZS 180 V6. According to the government this car created 227 grams of CARBON (that's HALF A POUND!!!) In 1000 Metres!!! So... I took the car to the local flying club where a friend of mine was getting his plane certified with a permit to fly... part of this certification is the aircraft is FORENSICALLY WEIGHED. So... we weighed the MG ZS and drove it approximately 3,000 metres... whereupon it should have created 681 grams (ONE AND A HALF POUNDS OF CARBON SENT INTO THE ATMOSPHERE) Now, it should have shed much more weight than 1.5 pounds, obviously... you cant create this big black lump of death out of nothing. We re-weighed the car. It lost 88 grams. The government lies! What a surprise!
Each carbon atom weighs 12u. Oxygen atoms weigh 16u. What you seem to forget is, CO2 is not entirely derived from the fuel. Fuel is a hydrocarbon, which upon combustion (assuming complete and perfect combustion which is impossible), each carbon molecule in the fuel, reacts exothermically with TWO oxygen atoms from the AIR the engine ingested, which coincidentally, Oxygen weighs far more. Secondly, "FORENSICALLY WEIGHED" means absolutely nothing. What were the scales accurate to? Nearest KG? Nearest gram? Nearest 500g? Third, the distance you drove, "around 3km". At such a short distance, it's absolutely meaningless. Fourth : Repeat experiments? You can't just run on example, you must repeat under the same conditions the vehicle got it's initial results from... which would be the NEDC test cycle, not some random 3km run, which could all be downhill... or uphill etc.
@@khalidacosta7133 My guess is that the 88 grams (which is probably within margin of error) is just the reduction in fuel in the tank. I can't understand why you think the car would weigh more. Otherwise old cars with over 100,000 miles on the clock would weigh tonnes more.

Anybody having studied high school science will know that CO2 is not a pollutant. It is an essential part of plant biology. Most people see cars as having some sort of monetary value. Depreciated or insurance value is a scam putting you in a cycle to keep purchasing new. The durability of new cars is compromised by cost cutting. With Labour it's what they don't mention that you need to look for. The chancellor was happy to say there was not fuel duty rise because she knew she'd get the money from VED and first registration tax.
She should have increased tax on Petrol/Diesel as tax on that has not risen with inflation over the past 15 years. And she should cut VAT on electric public charging to 5% (same as people who charge at home pay).

in France the VED is automatically added to the price of fuel, and has been for years... so grandad who uses his car once a week pays very little (as it should be) but people doing thousands of miles per year (and thus wearing roads out more and usually polluting more) pay a representative share.
The one I use the most ( around 5000 miles) only cost £20 to tax
Ridiculous system
Although I agree with this logic, those of us that live outside of cities (due to the cheaper house prices) will need to pay more VED in order to live/function a normal existence which is also unfair. We also pay a lot of duty on fuel already, so surely we're already paying per mile. Happy to have a robust debate on this.
Because we have a low IQ government

So... we weighed the MG ZS and drove it approximately 3,000 metres... whereupon it should have created 681 grams (ONE AND A HALF POUNDS OF CARBON SENT INTO THE ATMOSPHERE)
Now, it should have shed much more weight than 1.5 pounds, obviously... you cant create this big black lump of death out of nothing.
We re-weighed the car.
It lost 88 grams.
The government lies! What a surprise!
Not debating that the government lies, but don’t forget the car is burning oxygen with the fuel to produce the carbon dioxide.
I don't understand. are you saying this car should have weighed more? Or am I being dense and not realising this is satire.
Otherwise old cars with over 100,000 miles on the clock would weigh tonnes more.
when they get no revenue from petrol and no money from tax with everybody not having a car they would not be able to run the country,No reason to work anymore.Stay at home and let them look after you.

My car was registered in 1978, but was manufactured in July 1976, so qualified for zero VED from 1 April 2017.
I was able to obtain the date of manufacture from the Alfa Romeo Owners' Club.
Hope that this helps!
Don’t forget all of this VED tax has to come out of taxed income !
The people of the UK should just stop paying vehicle tax and the government would be powerless to do anything.
Every day there is more news on how we're going to be even more poor
But Starmer keeps telling us we’re going to be better off! He must take everyone for fools.
People gave them powers by electing them. It's like voluntarily signing the power of attorney to someone to manage your finances and he clears your bank account. Maybe he's a crook but you are the one who signed the papers allowing him to take over your money, so... 💁🏼♂️
Gangsters, as if the poor motorists dont pay enough already.
In other words you CAN drive a polluting vechicle just as long as you pay as much as £5450 a year in car tax for it. Reminds me of the ULEZ scam. Polluting cars are ok to drive as long as you pay khan for it
The polluter must pay. It’s only fair.
I must have something wrong here. My pre 2017 petrol car, 206g/km just cost £415 to tax, not £270 as you said.
The only good thing that can come from this country’s current situation is that younger generations will learn how disastrous it is to vote labour
And you think this wasn't also going to happen under the Tories ? Ha ha ha ha ha ha .... yes because they have been so good to us all these past years. Damn what a selective memory you have

@stevewiles7132 Yeah nice hey?
Well that's new car sales down the crapper then for anything desirable, unless you're a millionaire, these barstewards really do want us lot off the roads and doing what we're told.
The one thing I'm puzzled over is Pre- 2017 cars, my 2009 Audi Diesel is already more than the stated increase from £130 to £145 with CO₂ emissions of 139 g/km, so does that mean my VED in 2025 will go down ??? perhaps someone could clarify these figures please, I'm already paying monthly at about £16.62 on a DD, perhaps it's time to SORN it and take my chances !!! sick to death of being used as an open wallet by successive governments, this lot are the worst yet.
Do not declare sorn.. Do not sign anything.
When you sign a document you are agreeing to the documents terms.
..
Just do not tax the vehicle it is as simple as this.
The government can do nothing to the people as long as nobody taxes their vehicles.
.
This is the power that the people have but the people need to use their brain and Just stop agreeing to everything that the members of government try to impose upon the people.

We are not subjects of the crown we are people.
People have the right to not follow the so called instructions from weirdo members of the UK government
Different rates for 01/03/2001 TO 01/04/2017 cars, there is a government website with the rates and they are all going up significantly. Varies between £0 to £725 depending on emission band. Paying monthly costs 5% more. B-£20,C-£35, D£160, E-£190, F-£210, G-£255, H-£305, I-£335, J-£365, K-415, L-710,M-£735. BAND K is the maximum for cars registered before 23/03/2006. (BTW 139g/km is band E)
Great summary thanks
Last week I bought a 22 plate Aygo X to replace our trusty 14 year old Aygo Blue. Our Aygo Blue (2010) cost £20 / year to tax. The new Aygo X is now £190 the same as our larger Qashqai. Bearing in mind the engine is exactly the same, 3 pot 70 bhp, this is outrageous. Luckily I can pay it and the newer car is a huge improvement over the old Aygo.
With Labour it's what they don't mention that you need to look for. The chancellor was happy to say there was not fuel duty rise because she knew she'd get the money from VED and first registration tax.
Well clearly you are ignorant of he fact that these measures were put in place by he Tories.
She should have increased tax on Petrol/Diesel as tax on that has not risen with inflation over the past 15 years. And she should cut VAT on electric public charging to 5% (same as people who charge at home pay).
We (the electorate) voted for Change and that's exactly what we've got.
Labour, conservative, reform, liberal, whoever else comes out of the woodwork, it doesn't matter what they call themselves, they all have the same basic instructions to follow. They are a.uniparty. There is only the illusion of choice. If you keep voting, you are contracting in with their system. If you want real change, don't go along with the fallacy. How difficult can that be to understand?
@@garyburchgbwasting your time trying to convince them m8
And you can tell it has zero to do with actual pollution.
You can have a nice supercar and only do 500 miles a year in it but have to pay a fortune - then have a cheap run-around and create 20% more pollution - but the road tax is only a few hundred pounds
I reality - we should all now get 40+ year old cars
Don’t worry the sort of people that are buying a super car probably write it off as a business expense and won’t pay the tax anyway, even if they do pay the tax it’s not a lot extra as a percentage on a £250k+ car.
Which in effect is what road pricing would ballance out, not that I agree with it, just stating facts.
What's ridiculous is we all know ULEZ/LTN's are a money grab, because as long as you pay the fee's you can "Still" drive your non compliant over polluting car in London, nothing but a scam...
My daughter lives in London and leaves her old petrol car at home with us. I have a clean Euro-6 Diesel that produces less CO2 than her petrol car but choose to use hers when I drive into London to see her. Why? Because parking a diesel car is so much more expensive than parking a Petrol car that I'm better off in an old 45mpg Petrol than a new 52mpg diesel.
@ Well done, I say that because CO2 is only part of the equation. Diesel engines produce way more of all the other nasty stuff. We were lied to and fell for the Diesel engine scam. Also assuming your Diesel car has a DPF which it must have iit’s not good for it to be driven in cities too much. Thankfully the sales of Diesel cars are very close to zero now so when the current lot rot away we can say goodbye to that part of our automotive history.
This country is screwed.
you are a Kremlin Russian bot trying to stir trouble in west.
In NZ, a car registration is under $150 per year. Next year they want to raise the motorcycle registration to over $800 per year (currently over $600 per year), irrespective that one of my bikes is euro five and motorcycles here make up only 0.26% of the overall accident rate.
Waltham forest sent me a letter today asking for their Christmas present, i avoided the new no entry sogn at my friend's road only to be cought out by a restricted vehicular access sign.getting out of the not a one way but is effectively a one way system maze in my attempt to get to the 406 . Thanks for the heads up no tax it expires april 1st so i wonder what they will charge me.
Oh and my 10years of no claims insurance still costs nearly a grand for a car thats worth about a grand.
Lovely 🥰 we are all going to starve soon.
Yes cuz no one will be able to afford to run a vehicle to deliver your food
Starve? Not I, with my case of bovril 😂
the ice VED tax increase is no doubt to recover what the government loses from free VED tax on EVs,
It all makes sense when you remember that Electric vehicles are just a short stepping stone to NO private vehicles and we will all have to walk, cycle (non electric) or public transport in our 15minute localities .
Rubbish
@@jsanders100 I don't know, perhaps claims like this aren't as outlandish as they appear. Why else would they push EVs that obviously have no practical future as far as mass adoption is concerned.

Thank you BC Guy I knew nothing about this 😁👍
Bit of a ‘death by PowerPoint “ moment when we had each line of VED rates read out
One thing you missed out is pre 2017 cars below 100g/km (like mine) which have been paying £0 VED, mine will go up to £20 next year. Most of these will be diesels, get one that is 65, 16 or 66 reg and it will be Euro 6 and ULEZ compliant as well. Of course, you could declare your car as SORN for a couple of days in March, then renew the VED at the current rate. What happens to the first year tax if the car is sold on after 6 months? Can the seller claim back a refund of any part of it, and does the new owner have to pay any of it?
Glad the old 83 Ford Capri was historic last year.
I guess the drawback is that you’ve got to get it through the increasingly tougher MOT’s though.
@@youfoundme2022 No Mot required when it was 40 years old.
@@trevdean540 That’s interesting. I didn’t know that.
Wait until they move the goalposts.
Thanks for this ! Amazing insight
I may have nodded off but not sure you mentioned the expensive car tax (currently an extra £410/year from years 2 to 6) on ANY car with a list price when new of £40k or more (doesn't matter what you pay or if it's second hand). A lot of cars fall into this price bracket now including many electric cars though they only have to pay if bought new from April 25 so even less reason to buy electric.
Btw, just an observation, putting up a list then reading it is not particularly interesting, quite a few people watching this can read though I get it is very helpful for blind & partially sighted so well done 😊
Comprehensive coverage of the issue. Thanks
We have always been fcked up the arse in this country. It has just got steadily worse.
My Fiesta (pre 2017) VED has been £35 pa since April 2023.

@georgegently3026 come April 2025, they'll be £20.
