i met ant a couple of years ago when he was visiting the uk. he was at a car restoration place just a couple of miles from where i live which is also near where he is from. he was very busy with quite a few people there but he still took a minute to say hello and let me take a selfie. that says a lot about a person. we all know how some celebs can be. nice guy.
That says a lot mate. They often say "don't meet your heroes", as they can often be tools. I haven't met a lot of celebs, but I met Rosco McGlashan at a car show. Aussie land speed record guy. Years ago. I thought he was pretty brave, as in his early days, he basically bought an ex Mirage fighter engine, put it in a car and strapped himself into it. I was talking to this "old bloke" who I thought was one of his mechanics, who seemed to know a lot about it, then a crew member came out and said "Hey, Rosco..." so it was actually him. I got him to sign a poster, and said "my boys will love this!!!" , to which he said "boys?? How many?" I said two. He said "hang on......." he went and got another one, and said "You'll need TWO!!!". He spoke to me for ages. Some bloke turned up in a suit, got out of a Ferrari. He barged in and said "So, how much power??" Rosco glared at him, and said "Hang on mate, I'm talking to XXX (my first name) I'll be with you when we've finished." This bloke huffed and walked off. But he was a hell of a nice bloke. So sometimes you can be surprised.
Calling Ant Anstead an immediate fan favourite is stretching things a bit, as many fans felt Edd China was the heart of the show and that heart had been ripped out when he left. Anstead seems like a likeable guy and a competent mechanic, but let's face it: he didn't get to do even half of the work China did, which was the main reason why China left the show. Ratings took a hit and I can't shake the feeling that in retrospect Anstead can't have really liked being a skilled mechanic that only did fast-service type jobs so Brewer could get more screen time. Wheeler Dealers started out as a show around "Wheeler Dealer" Mike Brewer, who would find a neglected car that showed promise for a quick profit, fix it and spice it up a little and then sell it. Kind of what his spin-off series "Trading Up" showed. But because Brewer wanted to be more than just another dime-in-a-dozen "Wheeler Dealer", he set out to buy more exotic cars, which meant that Edd China was added to the show for the more complex fixes. This added a value that other shows at the time didn't have. China quickly became the fans favorite, so his role was expanded, inevitably reducing Brewer's screen time, something that Brewer probably didn't mind too much in the beginning, as the show hugely gained in popularity because of China. But as China's role kept growing, Brewer must have felt his role was being diminished a bit too much and he stepped in to do more of the work than just buying and selling, like looking for the hard-to-get spare parts or the master craftsman that could fix/replace some part(s) that were no longer available. I'd say that this is the period that the show was at its peak popularity. Then the show was sold out to the Americans and they moved to the US. After a couple of shows, the Americans decided that they wanted to squeeze more profit out of the show, so the more complex fixes had to go. China, just like many of the fans, felt that this really dumbed down the show and reduced "Wheeler Dealers" to just another dime-in-a-dozen quick car fix show, so he left. Fellow skilled mechanic Anstead jumped in, but as he left rather quickly after only two seasons, it's hard not to think that in hindsight he also wasn't happy with how much the part of the mechanic was dumbed down and even worse continued to be dumbed down, causing him to leave after only two seasons. Wheeler Dealers saw a huge drop in popularity when fan-favorite China left and then, as the show kept being dumbed down for the sake of more profit, the fans that did hang on to see how Anstead would fare, started leaving as well. Brewer doesn't even seem to care how much the popularity of the show has declined or about first China and then Anstead leaving, as long as he keeps being paid a nice salary. For many of the "old" fans of Wheeler Dealers, Brewer has sold out what was once a very informative show that went way further with showing how successfully buying, fixing and selling cars for a profit actually works and reduced it back to being "just another Wheeler Dealer show where cars are bought and flipped for a profit."
Definitely, the part of the mechanic was almost made out to be easy, after being one for nearly 40 years, some of the jobs they did were properly big jobs, and Mike would make out that it was an easy job, so we would then get customers saying "oh they only took 10 minutes to do that on wheeler dealers" completely missing the fact that 2 hours of stripping the engine before you get to the part to be changed wasn't on screen. Also when Edd was doing it, it encouraged some people to try and tackle the easier jobs themselves, some with positive results, some not so, but at least they were having a go, and got to realise that it's not as easy as they first think, at least we then get a little appreciation lol
@@Sennaxm71 Agreed, Edd was as much a teacher as he was a mechanic. But there was a second thing the show made clear without ever saying it: if you want to do a job properly, you'll need lots of professional tools, skill and a garage. Brewer tried to sell the "everyone can be a Wheeler Dealer because fixing neglected cars is simple", whereas Edd showed that although some cars seem relatively easy to fix, it takes a lot of work, skills and tools to fix them right. And that to me was the real strength of the show: you can do it, but only if you really know what you're doing.
This is so typical of American Executives, they take something that works well and then (because they think they are so AWESOME) squeeze it for profits and kill the essence of what it was. In my country, whenever Americans buy out a company, all the locals leave because they know that American management practices will be incoming.

I watched the show because of Ed China and the garage work being explained in a no bull way by a guy who was excited to be there doing what he loved, fixing junk that should probably have just been scrapped, the breakdown of costs at the end never adds in the 500 man hours that went into the car. Mike Brewer is a bit of a knob and whilst a presenter is an important part of a show, you do need to be likeable. Mike unfortunately is not particularly likeable or charismatic. Ed was the show, that is why we all watched it. Sorry if this is not a popular statement.

Wheeler dealers has been an entertaining franchise. I have found Ed China, Ant Anstead and Mark "Elvis" Priestly have all been entertaining foils to Mike Brewer's presence. All different but I have enjoyed them all.
Mike and Edd were a dynamic duo, with Ant the chemistry was altered and coupled with the change in format the show was never going to meet expectations, finally some balance has returned with the suave Elvis being the witch hazel the show needed. I just wish Edd could knock out more content. how long has he been working on that range rover. Look at salvage rebuilds they're turning cars in the same day sometimes. Best of luck to everyone. Easier to fix a broken car than a relationship. Cracked cylinder head? Leaking hoses? Broken halfshafts? Rotten rusted sills? Easier than love and duty. Hence many of us petrolheads retreating to our man-sheds.
I'd love to know who does what on the show. Does Mike really find the vehicles, or help finding them? The buyers also don't seem for real allt he time. And do the mechanics stop working when the camera is turned off?
He did that side of the mouth thing has well , which made him look like he was having a stroke , mid-sentence, and dont get me started on Brewer , a selfish little turd , the kind of man you meet in a pub and you end up buying the drinks allnight.
Never liked him, the way he treated those around him when he was building the replica Alfa....his attitude was so derogatory. When you said he was policeman, ah, makes sense.
Excellent comment and spot on. Most who join the police are of the authoritarian personality and only join to have power over their fellow humans. Ant is no different, who in their right minds wants to be a firearms officer anyway
Yes, he’s certainly been a very busy guy for someone so comparatively young. Hmmm. I heard he’s also been to the moon a couple of times. No room in his lengthy cv for that I guess....
It's a bit close between Ant and Elvis, in my view! But Elvis, Edd and Ant all made fantastic shows both teaching you and entertaining you. Thanks Mike for making it all happen.
I think Mike Brewer has been very clever in his choice of mechanics. Ed was a good all-rounder, Ant is good with fabrication of parts such as manifolds, exhausts and chassis parts and Mark (Elvis) is excellent with vehicle performance, machining and refurbishment of engines.
Ant seems like a great guy his knowledge was the main reason I watched Wheeler Dealers. This man is just dealing with what all of us men deal with which is women, you literally can't live with them and can't live without them. He will bounce back he's still young and smart and the type of guy who can do whatever he sets his mind to do.
Yes Mike is a car salesman, and not an honest one. With his constant patter of, I want £££ and if you don`t buy it, there are a lot of callers ready to step in if you don`t.
@@williamgardner2739 I agree 100%. I’m sorry that Ed is no longer on mainstream tv. He really deserved to head his own show as does Elvis who comes over as entrepreneurial , charming and with great knowledge . I see Ant as a show biz guy . He’s all a bit too demonstrative . ….and Brewer , dearie me, he now thinks he’s a latter day Clarkson even going so far as to use his expressions . What a useless pillock !
I didn't like Ant at the start but the more I watched the show the more I became impressed with his knowledge and his ability. I think now his the best person Mik Brewer has had with him and would even go as far I would watch the show without MIk Brewer.
As others have posted, Ed China was the reason I used to watch...Mike Brewer and Ant Anstead are two knobs short of a gear stick. Both ideally suited together.
maybe i'm being a bit picky but it really annoys me that everytime mike is talking about a car renovation he always says 'me and Ed', 'me and Elvis', 'me and Ant'. i know he's probably not that well educated, and doesn't need to be to be a secondhand car trader i suppose, but please, learn some proper grammar lol.
I find myself shouting at the telly when he does his I'm cool bit, throwing parts and tools everywhere and expecting us to believe that he knows everything about every vehicle ever built. We're to believe that he single handedly repairs everything.Ed and Elvis are much more believable and down to earth , he's just too far up his own arse to be likable.
he's not even a proper time served motor engineer. he was a traffic cop one minute and all of a sudden a qualified mechanic!! Ed China and Elvis however are real mechanics, especially Elvis with his F1 background.
I got tired of Mike's antics, he was just too English for me a Aussie, Ed was the only reason I watched the show as long as I did, Ant did a reasonable job as well. Often the cars picked would not appeal to the US or Australian viewers
He is a very enthousiastic personality and, although Elvis has a nice presence, I do miss Ant. He was made for this show, and we all saw him bloom for the challences they faced. Too bad he's gone..
It’s a bit like Top Gear it worked with the right team.. & didn’t work with any other . Irrespective of how people seem to dislike Mike, imo it’s him that holds the show together..
I can`t stand it when he keeps saying, watch and learn my son watch and learn, He just thinks he is the greatest, but he`s not. I am sick to death hearing it.
Didn't like Ant tbh, he was far too animated with his arms and body movements, and the stupid perma grin and wide eyes, like an over excited kid opening a Christmas present. Much preferred Ed's more laid back approach
I liked Wheeler Dealers, but could not stand Mike Brewer or the "Ant" bloke. Mike is just a vile sweaty little oinker, and "Ant" is a patronising , hey look at at me because I am lovely and so clever, type. Never liked him. His style was like he was talking to a bunch of 5 year olds, just like a kids TV presenter, " This is a screwdriver, be careful, it`s pointy " that sort of crap. Ed China was great And Marc Priestley was good as well, they knew their stuff, but I reckon " Ant " was shown what to do by folk behind the scenes.
As a total numpty about the mechanics of car ownership, I enjoy watching any good mechanic talk us through the necessary work. I quite enjoy the presentational style of all three incarnations of the show. But we all have our foibles! It must not be overlooked, however, that it is television, not your local garage explaining what's wrong. If, as I suspect, Mike Brewer owns the title, he will remain the lynchpin. I take from it what I need and overlook the window dressing.
Anstead claims he’s a master mechanic. How did he manage that ? Considering he was never trained. People forget there is an army of advisors assisting these so called mechanics. All they do is the posing in front of the camera
@@xluumu No but he shows his ignorance on the finer points of technical detail. An impeller works by centrifugal action, fan blades work by slicing through the air (or water as with a propeller on a boat).

I really enjoy watching both Edd China and Ant Anstead. They're both excellent presenters, with loads of charisma, who grab my attention, and it's fascinating to see them doing the work, and so clearly explaining each step. I echo other comments here that Mike Brewer is the weak link in the chain - just so irritating.

I heard he’s also been to the moon a couple of times. No room in his lengthy cv for that I guess....
What's funny about that is that after his marriage to Christina she went onto marry another ex cop Josh Hall lol
Still waiting for the "shocking truth" revelation. Typical bs clickbait.
Hate the guy, big headed ex cop... says it all really.
Ant has my support and admiration, he will never regret spending time and living on the same continent as his son, kudos my man Ant
Almost like he is scared to come back to the uk for some strange reason? Hmmmm…. Maybe, just maybe he’s not such a nice person?
What about his children in the uk?
It's a bit close between Ant and Elvis, in my view! But Elvis, Edd and Ant all made fantastic shows both teaching you and entertaining you. Thanks Mike for making it all happen.
Ant is a great mechanic and tv personality. I love him on wheeler dealers.🎉🎉
Actually he said he was a former police officer, fully armed, strike group. 🎉
Mike came across as way too cunning to ever get his hands dirty.
i more suspect he isn't capable as a mechanic ....
Or as a human @@graantmnz
Way too lazy
I think Mike Brewer has been very clever in his choice of mechanics. Ed was a good all-rounder, Ant is good with fabrication of parts such as manifolds, exhausts and chassis parts and Mark (Elvis) is excellent with vehicle performance, machining and refurbishment of engines.
You do know that producers are the ones that produce the make up of any show.
Mike was busy eating Chip Buttys just waiting to get paid to go buy more
Ant seems like a great guy his knowledge was the main reason I watched Wheeler Dealers. This man is just dealing with what all of us men deal with which is women, you literally can't live with them and can't live without them. He will bounce back he's still young and smart and the type of guy who can do whatever he sets his mind to do.
i don't watch this show anymore because Ed China is not there, he made the show great
Ant is a " look at me man" he does know some stuff but he becomes irritating with his fake ness
I really enjoy ANT and ELVIS. A show with them as headliners would be a real winner for me.
I watched this because of Edd's explanations and demonstrations of how to do the fiddly bits. Very informative.
Yeah sack Brewer and bring in Ed to team up with Ant ! Thats the theory.
It’s ironic how both Ant and Edd made the show. Mike is a car salesman 🤷🏻♂️
He iis actually a buga mina like our zulus say here in South Africa which means look at me. Arrogant know it all but knows nothing
Believe it or not , the whole idea was to buy a car, repair the car and SELL the car.
You mean a wide boy, don’t you?
It would be great to see all Ant's wonderful restorations and one off builds.
Mike's dodgy wig is a classic 😂
Mike doesn't wear a wig? Why do you think that?
@@stephennoble2647lol ok
@@stephennoble2647 Possibly because it looks like a syrup? Although I don't think he wears an Irish myself.
@@stephennoble2647or a personality
I didn't like Ant at the start but the more I watched the show the more I became impressed with his knowledge and his ability. I think now his the best person Mik Brewer has had with him and would even go as far I would watch the show without MIk Brewer.
Please have Ed team up with Ant ! Now, that would be a great show.
Classic narcissistic personality
Edd was the best
Who really cares about it. Let them just live their life as we are allowed to do, without all of the crap from media that controls them 24/7.
Ed was the best in my not so humble opinion - top bloke and really knew his stuff
Edd & Ant worked hard doing these restorations , Mike just ate all the profits....
It’s a tv show you whopper
Its mike that needs to go
@johngrey722 Yes he needs to go , car salesmen come 10 a penny, But good mechanics are hard to get.
Ant was a great addition to wheeler dealers. He should find another co-presenter, and start a similar program in California.
Elvis is the best. Never ever whinged, whined or complained. He just gets on with it. My sort of guy. We could be mates.
Ant is a great mechanic, hope he can someday teach his skills to his Son !!
Ant is the most american-like english guy I've seen. He'd be mad to leave, pretty sure the americans will love him.
master mechanic my arse!
he's not even a proper time served motor engineer. he was a traffic cop one minute and all of a sudden a qualified mechanic!! Ed China and Elvis however are real mechanics, especially Elvis with his F1 background.
I dont hate him but it felt like he was explaining everything to an 8 year old kid which was annoying to watch as an adult!
Never liked the American shows that much and ant was a poor replacement for edd
Mike needed replacing.
Edd was REAL. It’s that simple. Show was never the same.
Never thought Ant was any good. Stopped watching the show. With the new mechanic im watching it again. 👍
It’s a bit like Top Gear it worked with the right team..
& didn’t work with any other .
Irrespective of how people seem to dislike Mike, imo it’s him that holds the show together..
That`s rubbish, we all turn on to the show to watch professional mechanics teaching us about cars. NOT watching a car salesman, anyone could do that.
Bring back ED !
I dont want to watch a back street mechanic as in china
@@ianlee487 Go polish your Beema
Well that was a hugely informative video.
Well that was a hugely sarcastic reply....😂😂😂
There’s a few people that have had financial pain caused by mr a
I hope he is living a great life with his boy and is happy. I really enjoyed his work he was very particular and knowledgeable.
Hi Ed was great , but Ant added something more ; and to my way of thinking , moved the show forward , and was BRILLIANT !
Show is still ok but stopped watching it when ed left
Never the same without edd bit like two and a half men without charlie
ED WAS THE MAN 👍
I record the show, skip all the bits with Mike in and only watch the workshop done in 20 minutes.
I loved the exchanges between ed and mike, the morecambe and wise of the motor trade.
Why is it that the marriages don't last as long as they used to in the old days. Maybe do a show about marriage restorations.
Gave up on Wheeler Dealers when it became the Mike brewer show, sorry can't stand the guy.
I can`t stand it when he keeps saying, watch and learn my son watch and learn, He just thinks he is the greatest, but he`s not. I am sick to death hearing it.
Formula 1 is going the same way with the Yanks in charge🙄
F1 is now nothing more than Reality TV.
Really Loved watching Ant work. Really sorry to hear things didn't work out with wife #2. God Bless Ant, Hang in there. Thank you for sharing.
Ant for me was the best mech / engineer and presenter
Didn't like Ant tbh, he was far too animated with his arms and body movements, and the stupid perma grin and wide eyes, like an over excited kid opening a Christmas present. Much preferred Ed's more laid back approach
My thoughts entirely. He also presented a very boring exotic car auction programme- still wearing those scruffy T shirts.
I don't see a problem and for shirt he is working on cars what you expect him to wear
@@rodneydrew9117"exotic car auctions".Not working on cars.
About time mike brewer retired . For good
As a total numpty about the mechanics of car ownership, I enjoy watching any good mechanic talk us through the necessary work.
Master mechanic my r c ,waffler more like
He once called a water pump impeller a fan. A real expert!
Water pumps have impellers, so was the word fan such a big mistake in spoken language?
@@xluumu No but he shows his ignorance on the finer points of technical detail. An impeller works by centrifugal action, fan blades work by slicing through the air (or water as with a propeller on a boat).
ed left on his own terms, the show has improved greatly with new guy Elvis, best mechanic of them all come on formula one mechanic, nice guy to boot, the show has its highest ratings to prove it,one in the eye for all mike brewer haters
I really like Elvis. Didn’t really take to Ant. Ed was the best. He needs his own show.
He did a show with Phil glenister, restored several cars including bull nose transit and mk1 Mexico brilliant mechanic.
Ant is a prize tumshie, when he said the head bolts were finger tight on a Saab 93 in one of the videos
Aye, fuxxin tumshie indeed 😂😂
Never watched it since Edd left.
Ed was the best
Got kicked out of the force something to do with providing mots for a back hander, apparently.
Can you back that allegation up?
How do you know that?
Why can't they do an american version with ant and someone else . Like jay Leno doing Mike's job ?
Yuk, can’t stand leno’s freakish face. Worse than Mike.
EDD AND ANT GET A SHOW TOGETHER
Mike brewer was a typical car salesman all teeth and smarmy if I go anywhere and they come at me like that I turn around and walk back out
Antstead is not in the same league as Elvis he is a more likeable guy and lets hope he reigns for a long time!
