That tip on sanding the foot detail is great! I can see how I have been too aggressive when using the drill around the foot! I will be implementing more hand sanding on my bowl projects for sure!

Thank you again Tomislav, my work has so improved from your videos. I have a very similar setup with the dust extraction except I use a glass top which allows a lot more light onto the piece as you sand. keep them coming!

I had an old tube of silicon sealer which had set solid ,it made a great sanding disc cleaner after I'd got it out of the tube 😉

Thank you for another thorough tutorial and explanation of how and why going the right way. Could you at some point make the same kind of video specifically about green wood? When the bowl begin to warp, sanding is tricky and even more when passed through the microwave. Thank you again! Cheers!

For medium-soft foam pads, I cut up a gardener's kneeling pad. For a firmer pad, I use polyurethane cut from foam that is used for cosplay costumes. i use self-stick velcro hook material, and cu out a small crescent 'bite' on the edge to make a thumbnail grip to remove the abrasive - sort of like on a folding knife.
I also make balls of scotchbrite-type abrasives, cut from discs and mounted as stacks on a drill mandrel.

Thanks Tomislav, picked up some ideas and hints there. Sanding is still my least liked chore. I've been turning some African Blackwood and Pink Ivory walking stick handles recently, sanding down to a 600 grit which leaves a sleek finish to the touch.
Those are some nice woods,hard to get them here.
They aren't woods I use much, it just depends on what they have in stock when I hunt round my preferred timber merchants but I do like to try different woods and see how they are to work with. Purpleheart and Kingwood are nice woods to turn as well. Blackwood and Pink Ivory are tricky as they are hard and an be a bit brittle.
I forgot to mention that scotchbrite pads are excellent for use as backing pads for hook & loop abrasive discs or for paper/cloth sheets for handheld sanding. The pads hold the abrasive without slipping, and can conform to curved surfaces, and give your fingers a cushion without losing the feeling of the abrasive cutting.

I want to try the Klingspor sanding stars and mops, but I've got decision paralysis. They have some great demo videos on YT, but I'd love to see some comparisons of the different types of grit in action on real hardwood projects.

I use inercia sander to remove sanding marks and drill for inside and on really stubborn grain.

Не смотря на то, что я занимаюсь (на любительском уровне) токарными работами уже три года, кое что из твоего видео я для себя открыл новое. Вещь, похожая на Франкенштейна (4:25 мин) у меня тоже есть. Только я на неё наклеил мягкую пластиковую прослойку (3-4 мм.). По-моему, так это работает лучше. Попробуй, может понравиться? При шлифовке миски и почти в конце видео ты уделил немного времени скоростному режиму шлифовки. Это хорошо. Но у меня появилась мысль, что если бы ты снял видео, посвящённое скоростному режиму при точении дерева, это было бы интересно многим. Тема особенно не освещалась ни кем, всегда только упоминается о текущей скрости при работе. Спасибо и удачи тебе! Скоро у тебя уже будет первые 50 тысяч подписчиков! Желаю, чтобы к концу года прибавилось ещё столько же. Константин.

Very informative. I might finally progress to sanding now... Is there a surface feeling (or look) that you can describe when you decide which grit sandpaper to begin with? Thanks for another informative and entertaining video.
Usually if you see surface without tearout and smooth surface then usually I start with 180. But sometimes once you hit wood with abrasive you will accually see what kind of surface you have
Thanks for this video it explains so much. One question, what is your opinion on Norton paperback sandpaper. Maybe it's been part of my problem because you did not mention it as a top brand. Thanks again I always learn something watching your videos.
Norton is another great sandpaper company, I think they are more expensive then Klingspor or even 3m but they should work ok, if you find that you don't have results you want then try another premium brand. But Norton should be ok.
I did test at one point,I forgot the name of the product but its in diffent color grits on velcro, I wasn't very happy with that type of paper for woodturning.
Hi Tomislav great video. I have a question. Why do you fold the paper the opposite way to Richard? Is there a reason? Or is it because of the brand of paper?

On paper back paper it really doesn't matter, but on clothback I fold through width, on Richard paper is with numbers and on my is across ....
You want to fold so it stays folded.... otherwise can unwrap

This is a rather mundane subject but getting it right is critically important to getting good looking pieces off the lathe. Appreciate the detail and effort that you put into this video; it was very helpful and pointed out some areas where I need to make changes to improve my results. One question, it is often recommended that sanding be done forward, reverse, and then along the longitudinal axis to get rid of the circular marks -- do you find that redundant if you do use the sanding pads and inertia sander or drill?

That is good practice to do to go forward and reverse, and I do it a lot, but when using rotary sanders I don't stop the lathe to sand.... Don't see much need for that.
A good reason to change direction with progressive grits is more to help identify the older scratches. Changing direction makes the new scratches at a different angle when power sanding. When those older scratches disappear, change grits and direction and carry on.
Of course, what you really need is to get a tool finish as we are instructed by Tomislav Tomasic, using the Tomasic Refiner when it hits the shelves. Then sanding is an afterthought.
Another excellent video. As we've come to expect. All the yt wannabes and me-toos and copycats should be required to watch Tomasic videos before they are allowed to upload another miserable waste of time.
Stuart Batty says, Use sandpaper like someone else is paying for it.
Have you tried the 3m cubitron paper? One more question - your speed seems much higher than other videos recommend. It seems that there are two schools of thought. Have your experimented at speeds like 300-400? Reason why you sand at these higher speeds? Thx
I've mention and show it in video, somewhere before demo. I did get is to try, its one of the best paper ever made but not for turning... Atleast not in my opinion.... Works great on orbit sander but the lathe is ruthless 😀
Okay - i personally haven’t tried it out - just using standard paper i got from woodturnerswonders. But i sand at 300-400. Do you sand at a higher speed cause you feel you get better results? Or just faster and being a production turner time is money?
@@turningwiththewoods both accually,but also if I know that I'll have to sand more due to poor grain ,then I'll drop the speed for sure.... So there is not much heat involved.
how frequently is the grit printed on the back of the cloth-backed rolls? I stopped using Klingspor many years ago because the grit number only appeared around every 18". That necessitated my writing the grit number on the smaller pieces, a time-consuming pain. If it has changed for the better, I will try their products again.
Good question, Not sure, I'll have to check in the morning, but that can be an issue,but If I do have left over pieces I usually put them back in cubbies where belonged. Color coded are great but I think Klingspor don't offer that yet.
Can you get Klingspor to make the pad you like?

Your sanding discs are slightly larger than the pads. How do you do that? Do you make your own discs?
Nope, the pads are worn out but they were a bit smaller to begin with.
Usually they are excact 75mm but these were around 72mm
I trim some of my sanding arbors/pads down to non-standard sizes and sometimes trim backing/interface pads also to get the sizes I want. You can also stack interface pads to get a softer system.
