I hope that the point of this video will get to beginner turners to let go of the fear of skew as its one of the most used tool in my shop with such a great results....
I wish you all great time in your shop and thank you for supporting my work.
    Enjoy

One of the best presentations I've ever seen on demystifying the skew. For what it's worth...I think you give Steve and Richard a run for their money! Thank you again for sharing your experience and knowledge and doing it with the heart of a teacher. Well done sir!

After watching this video, I was able to use a skew for the first time to rough out my spindle and to make nice details like beads and coves, with no problems. I finished my little end grain box and it came out great. Thank you Tomislav.

This video should be a mandatory watch for all new turners. I hear so many people talk about how scary the skew is, and how they fear using it... I think they just don't understand it. I primarily turn things in the spindle orientation and my skews are my primary tool. Skew, 3/8" spindle gouge, round and square scrapers, parting tool... Those are all you need, in order of importance.

Thank you so mich for this video. I watched the other video for grinding the skew. I was able to make my first one. Now I need to practice. I agree about the danger of bowl gouge catches. in my early days of turning I had a bad catch and got hit in my face shield.

Tomislav, as someone who has been turning for almost 45 years and viewed probably a 1000 videos and demonstrations at shows and competitions I gotta tell you that was the best tutorial I have ever seen on the use of the skew chisel. I am only saddened by the fact that I live 1/2 way around the earth (Philadelphia USA) away from you and cannot take a class from you. I would echo the comments below whole heartedly. Don't stop the content as you are at the top of my youtube subscription list!!! THANK YOU

Its just practice, whenever you have spindle work, grab a skew and off you go... Don't use to much of scrap wood as there is something in using good timber or even better a complete project as it will mean more to you and you'll try not to mess it up... 😀

Excellent video. This is one of the best skew videos I have seen and really appreciate the detail you provided. You broke this down into easily understood basics that were very helpful. I think the thing about skews that scares people off is that catches tend to be dramatic -- as you point out, they aren't dangerous (except to the workpiece) but the drama associated with a catch can really get a person's attention.

Excellent demonstration and explanation! I see many Facebook posts by new turners. I always refer them to you and Richard! I will watch this many times. It looks like on V cuts, the handle stays perpendicular to the wood, and on beads, it ends up perpendicular as well. That might be where I have gotten into some trouble. Thank you again for your patient manner of teaching. You demonstrate finesse, but I guess that has to come from experience.

Thanks for making this video. It gave me confidence watching you slice the wood like butter. I played with my skew all day practicing and now I love this tool. I still have a lot to learn but have improved greatly with this tool.
I always used a gouge to round my wood, now I just grab my skew and round my wood very quickly. It is easier and quicker. Now i'm going to buy a couple of good quality skews.
      Keep posting those great videos.@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning

I forget who i was watching a few years ago, but it was an old guy. Batty? Thats what im remembering. He had an old video, looked like it was made in the 70s or 80s lol. He said to intentionally get catches for a few hours, on a lower speed. I did that. It was scary AF at first, but i eventually learned how to get a catch, and how to not get a catch.

Great lesson on skew use. If I may add some hard earned advice it is that it is essential to relax when using the skew. People new to it are often anxious and as a result tense up and grip the tool like thier life depends on it. RELAX guys. A very light grip. Drop your shoulders and chill out. Every so often stop and drop those shoulders again because they will be tensing up. Doing this gives much better control with your right hand and if/when you get a catch it won't dig in nearly as much as if you had a tight grip.

very nicely explained. One thing from my experience is, that you can use the upper part of the edge for planing while having the skew competely supportet on the toolrest as long as you stay away from the very tip of the edge (some of the catches you showed were the upper corner catching, not the unsuported edge, as you still had the skew flat on the toolrest).

Thanks for another fine video. Watching this video I now have a better understanding of the skew importance as a wood turning tool. I’m getting more acquainted
with the skew now that I know how to sharpen it and how to use it properly. I’ll be doing more productive practice with the skew. Thanks again for time.

Thanks for a great presentation Tomislav, I realize my main mistake is the height I set my tool rest at. I feel that this correction will help me a lot. Thanks again for your help.

Tomislov, another great video, maybe your best yet! Your explanation and demonstration of how to and how not to use the skew is extremely helpful. Appreciate your pointing out the approach angles and how to present the tool to the work. I have some blanks ready so after I reshape my skew, I will be excited to try and put into practice everything you have shared in the two skew videos.
Thank you for all the time you dedicate to sharing your knowledge of this craft with others. Wishing you and your family a very Blessed Christmas 🙏🏼🎄. Randy 🤠🇨🇱

Thank you for time that you are investing in tutorial, as usual your explanations can not be more loud and clear then that. Now, hopefully, i will be able to stop practicing catches 😉and start doing nicer job on my spindle works.

Thank you, like with anything, its just about practice and repetetive work.... Make a comitment to make for family or coworkers some ornaments using skew and soon you'll have nice results🤗

Always a pleasure to see your informative videos! It's true that I've always been afraid of the skew. But this course gave me self-confidence. What is the grind angle of your skew? 15° on each side? I have already seen so many different angles....Thank you very much for these lessons!!

Its ash but I saved it from mulch in the mulching yard, so it got extremely nice colors.... Something similar would be on your plates
