Because Emil is a terrible writer? You can thank him for the nonsense uninspired main story in fallout 3 and 4. Even 76 was a better main story, still written by him, but it's mostly non existent (that's why it's better😂) Thankfully he doesn't write everything, that's why the side quests seem better than the main quest😂
If I could rewrite the last ending: "So, the Vault dweller was faced with a choice. Sacrifice his companion as a coward would do, or sacrifice himself as his father once did. Ultimately however, the Vault dweller chose a simpler, and more rational approach. With the help of his mutant ally, he averted the untimely death that would have happened to him. That day, three hero's emerged from the project purity facility. One of valor, one of strength, and one of ration."

FYI: The original game ending, Fawkes REFUSED to do it. The game literally gave you the platter to solve the problem, but he refused. You can only get the Fawkes ending with the Broken Steel DLC where there's post-plot activities to do, like finishing the Enclave. They just didn't get Ron Perlman to redo his lines.

They are somehow incredibly contrived at the same time as being foolish, unsatisfying, heartbreaking (not in a good bittersweet way either) and generally just awful. It is their weak point. Granted there have been exceptions, but sometimes the narrative pays the price somewhere else. Trade offs is the watchword for Bethesda titles and I think it's mostly down to their development cycle, which is how do we say? Unrealistic expectations.

I still remember as a kid getting blindsided and confused by this ending after 50 hours of gameplay. It was years later I learned about the original pre-DLC ending and how Bethesda decided to be petty morons salty at everyone for having fair criticism of their extremely poor writing. Rather than actually fix the glaring error (like maybe they just prevent Fawkes from joining you in that final section somehow) they decided they're OK with tricking first time players to ruin their ending by clicking the middle dialog choice that is THE ONLY REASONABLE OPTION. The game teaches you multiple times Fawkes can do this and he literally scolds you if you don't use him to retrieve the GECK from highly similar situation. What a life lesson, Bethesda writers call people cowards for not wanting to un-alive themselves. It's really not the own they think it is.

People defend the cutscene for its voice over because they didn’t want to / financially couldn’t get Ron Pearlman to do extra lines for the dlc, however it’s still inexcusable because the game literally ACKNOWLEDGED the possibility of Fawkes / Charon doing it in the main game before the dlc was even released and it was even worse because they pointlessly made them say “no I won’t” (even though it makes absolutely ZERO sense character wise for Charon to say no, it’s literally against his entire character). That’s not just bad game direction or bad writing, that’s just brain dead to take a perfectly logical narrative choice that avoids any negative consequences for good people and yourself, take the time to write the dialogue and get the voice actors to talk about the choice, but completely railroad you not being able to do it for absolutely no reason in particular in the eyes of the characters JUST so you can hammer in a half-ass self sacrifice motif. It makes me glad that they’ve changed writers for fallout games since 3 and 4 because clearly the people who were previous writing the game just didn’t understand how an RPG is meant to work.

My guess would be that Ron was probably busy with other projects, or otherwise. So, really, if given the wording here. It'd play out the same, if they could have gotten Ron to redo for a third ending. But. Beggars can't be choosers these days, or, granted, back in the earlier day of when Broken Steel happened.

I literally was baffled to see the ending's logic to shitting on the lone wanderer, he is still the hero? Because if he didn't met Fawkes at vault 87 and partnered with him, none of it would've had happened. Why would you call Fawkes a true hero? He wouldn't have done anything even knowing the project purity for godsake and just staying in vault 87 forever listening to the rambles of his stupid mutant peers but thanks to the lone wanderer, it was they who showed him the path and really changed Fawkes perspective on the world. I mean it's not just Fawkes, every companion you would meet would certainly changed for the better if not for the lone wanderer and forever making the capital wasteland a better place in the end even when not sacrificing himself for a *noble* (my ass) cause. my game crashed, i asked fawkes to initialize the purifier, cuscene appeared, then i woke up at the brotherhood of steel base with fawkes saying i had to activate the purifier and the purifier mission was still active, asking me to initialize the purifier

If memory serves,if your karma is good enough and you have all three DLC's. You get an ending where you wake up at the BOS base where Sarah Lyons tells the wanderer. That after activating Project Purity" they retrieve your body. Which is still alive but basically on death's doorstep and that it was a close call. But they managed to save your life.

I'd say the "good" ending is, in vague order: Nuke Megaton, save Tenpenny tower, help Ashur, sell Paradice Falls all the raiders and Lyonshood knights you can, help Underworld, help the Mechanist, get Project Purity up and running, ditch Eden's FEV plan but leave him "alive", burn the Enclave, burn Lyonshood, and enjoy being the Outcast's tech fetcher. The Lone Wanderer ends up as the rich undisputed overlord of the Capital Wasteland, and everyone important is happy.
This game calls you a coward because it’s written like a fantasy game. Boy leaves his village to ultimately for fill his destiny in saving the world but along the way faces against black knights, orcs and other creatures. It’s a black and white story of good vs evil.
I feel like a good person could continue to do more good things if they aren't dead. Not sure why dying after just one step towards fixing a very broken world is supposed to be the courageous and moral choice.
Bethesda included it as part of the Broken Steel DLC, you need to have that installed or you can't get this Fawkes ending (most first time players of the GOTY edition just get tricked into this ending if they have Fawkes). Of course, the Broken Steel DLC makes both endings pointless anyways because it just retcons you dying and the DLC story starts with you being miraculously still alive in the BoS hospital. It's all very stupid.

The writing teams for Bethesda are historically bad at conclusions. They are somehow incredibly contrived at the same time as being foolish, unsatisfying, heartbreaking (not in a good bittersweet way either) and generally just awful. It is their weak point. Granted there have been exceptions, but sometimes the narrative pays the price somewhere else.
Trade offs is the watchword for Bethesda titles and I think it's mostly down to their development cycle, which is how do we say? Unrealistic expectations.

Also, it's the same voice lines you get for sending what's her name in there. They just didn't bother to record new ones when adding the option to send Fawkes in

I still remember as a kid getting blindsided and confused by this ending after 50 hours of gameplay. It was years later I learned about the original pre-DLC ending and how Bethesda decided to be petty morons salty at everyone for having fair criticism of their extremely poor writing. Rather than actually fix the glaring error (like maybe they just prevent Fawkes from joining you in that final section somehow) they decided they're OK with tricking first time players to ruin their ending by clicking the middle dialog choice that is THE ONLY REASONABLE OPTION. The game teaches you multiple times Fawkes can do this and he literally scolds you if you don't use him to retrieve the GECK from highly similar situation. What a life lesson, Bethesda writers call people cowards for not wanting to un-alive themselves. It's really not the own they think it is.

I thought that one of the main reasons for teaming up with Fawkes was so he could activate the purifier since he's immune to radition. But Fallout calls you a punk ass bitch if you don't sacrifice yourself for no reason at all.

The lone wanderer knew that his special friend was mentally impaired, and likely to botch the startup. Yet, in a moment of utter selfishness and irresponsibility, he chose to place everyone's lives in Fawkes's clumsy-ass hands.
By some miracle, after initially struggling to understand the interface, the noble simpleton managed to pull it off, saving the wasteland, but HO, LEE, SHIT!

The fact the game insults the player for sacrificing a companion even thought it was like every choice the player make, the game forces the player to sacrifice himself is soo stupid
People defend the cutscene for its voice over because they didn’t want to / financially couldn’t get Ron Pearlman to do extra lines for the dlc, however it’s still inexcusable because the game literally ACKNOWLEDGED the possibility of Fawkes / Charon doing it in the main game before the dlc was even released and it was even worse because they pointlessly made them say “no I won’t” (even though it makes absolutely ZERO sense character wise for Charon to say no, it’s literally against his entire character).
That’s not just bad game direction or bad writing, that’s just brain dead to take a perfectly logical narrative choice that avoids any negative consequences for good people and yourself, take the time to write the dialogue and get the voice actors to talk about the choice, but completely railroad you not being able to do it for absolutely no reason in particular in the eyes of the characters JUST so you can hammer in a half-ass self sacrifice motif. It makes me glad that they’ve changed writers for fallout games since 3 and 4 because clearly the people who were previous writing the game just didn’t understand how an RPG is meant to work.

Emil still works for Bethesda yes, but he isn’t the writer anymore, he’s more of an executive producer (which is worse, especially looking at what he did to starfield) but it gives the chance for some new blood to flow into the series, and makes room for other people to be at more executive roles, so we’ll see…

Ah. I see now. It's literally the "Send Sarah Lyons" ending dialogue, replayed over Fawks going in (Or, as I call it, the Coward and Evil morality ending). Because they couldn't get Ron Pearlman to redo a new line or two toward the Fawks ending (I'd call it the Neutral and Honest Heart path). My guess would be that Ron was probably busy with other projects, or otherwise. So, really, if given the wording here. It'd play out the same, if they could have gotten Ron to redo for a third ending. But. Beggars can't be choosers these days, or, granted, back in the earlier day of when Broken Steel happened.

Because if he didn't met Fawkes at vault 87 and partnered with him, none of it would've had happened. Why would you call Fawkes a true hero? He wouldn't have done anything even knowing the project purity for godsake and just staying in vault 87 forever listening to the rambles of his stupid mutant peers but thanks to the lone wanderer, it was they who showed him the path and really changed Fawkes perspective on the world.
I mean it's not just Fawkes, every companion you would meet would certainly changed for the better if not for the lone wanderer and forever making the capital wasteland a better place in the end even when not sacrificing himself for a *noble* (my ass) cause.
The impact to the wasteland is enough to call himself a hero and would've save elder lyons in the later years but NOoooOo the narrator would call you shit because you weren't following daddy's footsteps on dying.
Still terrible writing from Bethesda honestly. The player doesn't NEED to sacrifice himself in this situation when he's literally got a super mutant ally that's IMMUNE to the radiation!
It's even worse when you remember that in the original ending before the DLC, Fawkes essentially just told you "no I'm not doing it, get in there and die"

my game crashed, i asked fawkes to initialize the purifier, cuscene appeared, then i woke up at the brotherhood of steel base with fawkes saying i had to activate the purifier and the purifier mission was still active, asking me to initialize the purifier

If memory serves,if your karma is good enough and you have all three DLC's. You get an ending where you wake up at the BOS base where Sarah Lyons tells the wanderer. That after activating Project Purity" they retrieve your body. Which is still alive but basically on death's doorstep and that it was a close call. But they managed to save your life.

You give me such companions as a ghoul, a super mutant, and a robot and you still expect me to do the stupid thing of going into a highly irradiated chamber when I have 3 options for companions who each are not affected by radiation. I mean, maybe there could be a consequence in broken steel where our Mr. Gutsy essentially dies to the shock wave I guess? It's an EMP right? Anyways, pretty much the thing that ruins the good ending is the game still calls you a pussy for doing something sensible. Get the bad ending, least it's fun being an evil bastard. Hell, you're probably even doin' a lot more good in the world too. I don't mean like blow up Megaton, even though that town's just a rule of cool place that doesn't make any sense, or even sell out those escaped slaves who wanna rebuild the Lincoln memorial and then help destroy any effigies to lincoln. I mean just go around doing the other evil options, like enslaving raiders and Talon Company, steal, eat people, convince a kid to steal store products for you, steal from the stores your self at night with a stealth boy activated and then sell off the goods elsewhere.
Edit: Also, nuke the Brotherhood of Steel, cause you know how those bastards turn out in Fallout 4.

I'd say the "good" ending is, in vague order: Nuke Megaton, save Tenpenny tower, help Ashur, sell Paradice Falls all the raiders and Lyonshood knights you can, help Underworld, help the Mechanist, get Project Purity up and running, ditch Eden's FEV plan but leave him "alive", burn the Enclave, burn Lyonshood, and enjoy being the Outcast's tech fetcher. The Lone Wanderer ends up as the rich undisputed overlord of the Capital Wasteland, and everyone important is happy.

This game calls you a coward because it’s written like a fantasy game. Boy leaves his village to ultimately for fill his destiny in saving the world but along the way faces against black knights, orcs and other creatures. It’s a black and white story of good vs evil.
I feel like a good person could continue to do more good things if they aren't dead. Not sure why dying after just one step towards fixing a very broken world is supposed to be the courageous and moral choice.

Bethesda included it as part of the Broken Steel DLC, you need to have that installed or you can't get this Fawkes ending (most first time players of the GOTY edition just get tricked into this ending if they have Fawkes). Of course, the Broken Steel DLC makes both endings pointless anyways because it just retcons you dying and the DLC story starts with you being miraculously still alive in the BoS hospital. It's all very stupid.
