just my 2 cents about gaming ... not everyone wants a gaming headphone with mic ... some of us want a great headphone for music that really works out in terms of soundstage, imagining or dynamics for gaming :D great review!
Zeos, great recommendation! Here's my review: after watching this review and others, I bought these on sale for $250 (open box) about 3 months ago. I have been in love ever since. Not only are they super light, comfy, and well-made, but the Luans have a very carefully, well-tuned sound signature. You can tell someone was trying to achieve something very specific with these and I think they nailed it. They are wide, crystal clear, detailed, airy, and yet have a welcome amount of mid-bass warmth and decent enough bass for things like kick drums and bass guitar to be impactful. That said, don't expect murder bass here. Vocals (especially female), acoustic, electronic music, classical, jazz, rock -- these things sound good in every genre I've tried. Imaging is *good* (not amazing) but they are wonderfully wide which helps with instrument separation. They aren't quite as wide as my AKG K702s (which are insane), but they're pretty close. And, despite having great treble, they are SMOOTH. There's nothing that hurts, ever, unless you come across a truly horribly recorded track. As Zeos points out, they seem to really like tube amps, which smooths them out even more and improves the staging. That said, I only have a cheap desktop hybrid tube amp to test with, but plan to upgrade soon. I can't wait to see how these respond. Also, they're very easy to drive so low gain on any decent amp should be more than enough. I run them balanced but haven't been able to hear a difference in sound quality vs single-ended. One more thing: it's true that you can't swap the pads for 3rd party vendors but you can easily buy replacement light brown or black pads from Sivga. They're only $20 too, at least as of posting this. I bought two extra pairs because that's how long I plan to have these. Their build (all metal and wood) is made to last, so I figured I'd get the pads while I can. If you are looking for something a smidge more fun than totally neutral, smooth and wide, and unbeatable comfort, the Luans are for you. I feel like they don't get enough press for how good of a value they are.
I have a small collection of headphones, of which the Phoenix is one, which I love. For the fun of it I got Sendy Apollo pads to swap on it and they sound amazing with those pads. I wonder if this is the Luan.
Clamping force vs SHP9500? The 9500’s are the only headset that doesn’t clamp my head making it pure comfort. Would like an upgrade but I’m very clamp sensitive
Speaking of comfort. I couldn't find factory pads for my harmonicdyne Zeus. So I bought dekoni fenestrated sheepskin pads (Beyerdynamic DT) and WOW they sound great. Not as soft as the stock Zeus but fit great and audibly make everything a little clearer and a little louder? Like I eq' d them. Should hold me over until I buy the Zeus elites or HD 800's.
@@makunouchiippo816 Just wanna know because If "too much soundstage" that he said can come close like 80% of 800S soundstage.. then this can will be my go to for sure. (I love openback with huge stage and warm relaxing)
@@balllovewow Without testing these news Sivgas... I would still say you are expecting too much. Open backs tend to have more soundstage compared to closed backs due to their construction but you won't get that 80% out of a 300$ headphone. In the end always make sure to test them in a music store and not buy headphones blindly or else you will always regret it.
Have you thought about trying a pair of the Slate VSX headphones? As you are well versed in speakers and headphones, and these claim to accurately reproduce both types of sounds, It'd be awesome to get your take on them.
Everyone...just get the Koss kph30i's with Grado pads. Take the original foam off and call it a day! I have 10 pairs of headphones including Ananda's. These are maybe a slight bit off the Ananda's but not by much. I reach for them more for some reason and the others are sitting in a bag in my closet. Fidelio's Sennheiser 58x...etc.
Sivga Robin and Sivga 006. kph30i with Grado pads just works! AND with a slight ear imbalance i can position each ear pad to get the balance i want and can't do that with the others. That's just another plus but sound wise....i still prefer them for my sonic pleasure!
How does the pad opening compare to HD800/S or the eggfimans? Those are the only headphones I've found till date that cover my ears completely without touching.
bought the luan's and they arrived today. the opening isnt as big as the hd800s they slightly touch my ears if they aren't sitting perfectly. but they give better leverage on the sides of your head so imo more comfortable than the 800s. in fact i'm returning my hd800s because of how comfortable these are.
Senn HD 800 are "difficult" to find a good sounding amp for? Aren't Fos TH 909 like that too? Maybe that should be a category? Headphones that need a specific amp. Being a snob is certainly one of the hifi categories. Then they can say you're using the wrong amp, & that's why "X" headphones sound bad.
Ah damnit I just bought the fiio ft3 and really wanted a 109 pro (ended up going for the fiio and a penon 10th anniversary iem). The ft3 is pretty damn good though lol.

Are there any big Big headphones with normal price? I need very wide and deep headphones for my BIG ears, for now I'm using Sennheiser hd 599 black ver. Almost happy but still little narrow and not enough deep, still my ears touching inside the headphones. I was thinking if Sennheiser hd 820 are enough wide and deep but the price is not for me and they need to be ride by powerful DAC.
Personally, I'm part of the group that prefers headpones to sound different with different amps/dacs; what's the point in a varied selection of sound equipment if it all sounds the same? I'd rather have a collection that I can use like legos to achieve interesting things
For gaming I like two types of headphones. I don't do competitive. I generally like something comfortable, light and least fatiguing sound-wise for 8-hour+ sessions. If its any less than that I will use something boomy and probably i bit V shaped. Dialogue isnt too important in video games so I would not emphasise mids personally. I just want bassy explosions, punchy gunshots, and good separation.

Grado is a good company but the SR 80 sounds like they voiced it with their phono cartridges, which are not spotlit at all. Maybe they don't sound bright and hashy with those. With cd, I guarantee you the Hifiman 400i 2020 is so much cleaner that it's ridiculous. About 70% better sound quality. The Grado does have better mid and upper bass definition than the 400i.
