Sadly I have to report that I have gone through three pairs of these wonderful sounding cans but each one has broken after 2-3 weeks at the locking connectors. After a week or so, a hairline crack develops before the whole connector shatters. Many other users are saying the same thing so it appears to be a QC issue. Sad, but I have to go for the warranty and try to sell them 😭

What I am about to say might upset you. Im seeing alot of people, feeling a bit let down by your review, going and posting on other reviewers comments sections. These seem to be pretty divisive. I just sent these back to Amazon because they are not gonna be any good for mixing.
I bought these partly due to your positivity as you have so many more reference points than I do. Totally understand everyone has different tastes tho. Initially I liked them enough but when comparing to more expensive headphones I could hear the price point and the scoops in the frequency response were pretty evident especially when trying to identify sibilance. These are anything but flat and balanced. I also saw that these start snapping at the locking mechanism about 2 months into use so there is a clear stress point there and I can't risk that when using them on location. The metal connector to the air cup is literally attached to the locking mechanism via a thin bit of plastic.
I do value your feedback. I think a lot of people do. I can't help feeling that you are riding the purchasing hype wave a little with this one. I know affiliate links pay the rent but I feel like a more measured comparison between these and some of the headphones they are directly in competition with would have been more revealing and more accurate. These are not as advertised and I am surprised you didn't make as big a deal of that in this review.
I guess allot of these will end up in your Swap Meet.

I just bought these, because I loved the look of them, going to balance them as soon as I try and like them, but was waiting for at least one of my usual trusted reviewers. Last time I blind bought a pair of headphones because zeos recommended it was the emotiva airmotiv and I still love the hell out of them.
Edit: super simple to balance them, if anyone is interested. Remove the right pad, get a flat screw driver or similar to pry up from the bottom of the centre raised part, the driver will come out. There's a cable that snaps on to the pcb running to the other side. Disconnect it, use the tabs along the side to keep the wire from rattling. Now you can use a cable with 2* 3.5mm jacks cus you have separated the ground. In my case the wiring wasn't compatible. So on the same PCB you removed the cable from. I desoldered the wire from R and tacked it to L. Works perfectly now

Rode did the same thing with mics. I bought the NT1 condenser when it came out for $99, and it won almost every award that year. It still holds a record of being one of the quietest microphones ( self noise) ever made. I’ve used Rode mics ever since on stage and studio. I don’t know any condenser mic that sounds this good on female vocals in this price range. This headphone doesn’t surprise me at all. Sonny T

I've used DT770 Pro for perhaps 12 years, went through 2-3 pairs for work.
Then I saw this, and I've fell in love right away. So accurate, at least seems like. Went from C-2 to C-8 on Korg Wavestation, random cool pad, and the detailing was just perfect. I think I'll have to buy one for my sound card, and put DT770 as a backup, at least that's how I feel right now. Perhaps things will change, but I don't know at the moment. I'm also shocked...
As per the price, Rode pricing always was based on quality at lower prices. This perhaps that's why they've made those very affordable.

Be careful, they have a high failure rate on the size locking mechanism part, because it is plastic that holds metal, Check and see that is a 70% failure part, one even broke in a few weeks, an other in 2 months an other in 6 months,so eventually that is the braking point on all the NTH-100 headphones, I wish Rode will recall them and release NTH-101 , replace the problem part with either full metal , or metal with over-mold plastic, double thickness head pad and easier to replace headphone pads and sell it for 170€ - 200€ , because they are worth at least that much.

So I use the NDH20 since the review of NDH20 or shortly after. I love these for sounding more on the refined side vs 58x which sounded to boring but immersive. M1ST gave me the 2nd increase in tinnitus from the fake soundstage hiding the volume on the good Brainwaves pads. Some sounds in the M1ST are addictive but 900st might have been better by far (historical headphone). Now I really want the RODE. I already love professionally boring headphones to hear every tint in songs. My fun in music and audio comes from the small differences and nuances....

    • @ClaireMcHardy
      @ClaireMcHardy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You wont hear that with the Rodes. They are veiled and I am returning mine. There is not much critical about them. They are an above average sounding $150 dollar headphone that is over hyped to the max. With poor build quality and manufacturer roll the dice variance in models and drivers.

So I bought these upon watching this video which I never do. I’m very much paralysis by analysis and nerve pull the trigger. Decided to give it a shot and no regrets. Wow these are well built headphones and memory foam and alcantara for 150$! They feel solid and look great. Bass is moderate and lovely neutral but still fun sound. I’m sure break in time will open these up a bit after a few hours of run time. But out of the box enjoying it a lot so far. For the price they are everything I wanted and expected out of headphones. Ps I’m very much a studio monitor person so I may be biased to a neutral sound. I own iloud micro and Kali audio in5 but I also have tin T2.

  • @PhoggHawk

It's interesting. I watched a few other reviews on these and nearly everyone comments on how very flat they are since they were designed exclusively for mixing and studio work. One guy said that the drums sounded "smeared" to him. Yet, I heard Z's demo and he's clearly very excited about them. They do sound punchy and pretty good on that demo. I wonder why there is such a big difference in how these people perceive them vs Zeos and a decently impressive sound demo? It does cause me to hesitate a bit. I am curious about what other audiophile reviewers might think about them, if they review them at all. I've been watching Z's reviews for years now and I trust that when he's excited about something that they are pretty good, because I've tried some of the products myself, so I am confused about the sharp contrast in opinions here. The only others reviewing them right now are studio guys that say they are very neutral and not necessarily very exciting at all, and this is quite by design. It's clear in the Rode marketing that they intended for them to be used in the studio, and not necessarily for music enjoyment, and the other reviews seem to back that up. They don't make these sound exciting at all, because they are not supposed to be.

I have m50x’s and i took the plunge and got the Rode off Amazon, knowing i could return them. At first I loved them, but a few days later i found them to be missing quite a bit. I got them for recording and Synth use, but i found there was too much difference between the two headphones. Maybe im used to the m50x, but the m50x sound like my speakers sound, and how my keyboards sound through a PA. I also noticed my ears were sweating just as much with the Rode. I thought about keeping them but i see no point. I have Laos noticed all the Rode reviews seemed to have been done just before or just as they were released, causing me to think there might be a bit of a bias going on with most reviews.

i bought them with high anticipation and i think they're actually quite a horrible set of headphones, even for the price.
isolation is absolutely terrible, absolute no go for recording work. soundstage is also beyond flat and weird and frequency response is all over the place. base hump, dead high end. i pulled them apart to see if i can mod them. the driver dampening felt they used is absolute bonkers (3-4mm thick) and just kills some frequency bands, especially the high end. then they glued another foil over the driver - the part of the drivers thats actually "open" (through the 3-4mm felt) are directly hammering into your ear canal.
i cannot open the rear chamber without fear of breaking them. screwless design, just glue and clips. the rubber plug for sealing the unused 3,5mm port is also uggh. those ports should be sealed internally.
i went through quite some front chamber dampening variants and theres more highend, more linear bass and better soundstage in those, but i havent found a working mod for everything that doesnt break anything else.
i didnt compare them to other $170 phones (just $300 and up), but at that point i wouldnt even recommend to buy them at all. for me those are some cans with serious flaws front and back with very little redeeming features. they get absolutely cooked by koss porta pros.

Just a little heads-up for all who consider buying into the hype: These are build very well, "but" have quite rolled off treble and therefore can sound unexiting and even dull, especially with tracks that are well mastered. They also have a little bit of extra warmth in the lower midrange/upper bass which can be a bit too much depending on the genre or song, especially together with the rolled off treble. I think this headphone is a good choice for people who are very treble sensitive or who want something very easy to listen to. This is not a reference headphone like advertised though.
