Back in 2014 I played this Song for three Kids who had never heard of Joy Division before, or Since. IT BLEW THEIR MINDS. It was something they had no Preparation for, nor any kind of music knowledge of. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
Amazing version- RIP Ian. Long Live Joy Division. "The human heart cries out for help; the human soul implores us for deliverance; but we do not heed their cries, for we neither hear nor understand. But the man who hears and understands we call mad, and flee from him." Kahlil Gibran The Prophet
With numbers like this, Joy Division truly sound like the 'missing link' between such earlier rock innovators as The Doors, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Roxy Music, Bowie, etc and '80s and '90s alternative acts like Sonic Youth, Live Skull, Band Of Susans, Pixies, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc. Classic stuff.
It is often said that BBC sessions were better than the album recordings. Here is proof. My word, amazing recordings. I remember this as a 15 year old on John Peel. Oh the 70s wow.
depends on the song i’d say. definitely for this song though. hannet was great for the less aggressive joy division songs, but the production doesn’t really suit songs like colony very well.
@@daviddockery8962 A nuanced response. Hannett ruined about half of the songs but brought the others to a level the boys could not have done unaided: Atmosphere, Dead Souls, Decades, Insight, New Dawn Fades, Passover to name a few obvious examples.
This is truly the single greatest musical achievement from the greatest band ever. Brutally mesmerizing,, haunting , beautiful, dark, and utterly chilling. The boys were on a different level in these sessions. Curtis and his raw power still gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.
+Zach Forrester yes, One Of The Best Bands Ever, and that is huge compliment/ i don't believe in endless arguments over who was the best of great bands)
Martin Hannett's production ruined some of the songs on Closer - although it improved others, like The Eternal and Heart and Soul. Ian Curtis was very unhappy with the sound of the album.
He wrote a letter to Rob Gretton shortly before he passed - he said 'I decree the album is a disaster.' You can find it online somewhere. He also said that parts of it sounded like Genesis@@synysterjazmyngates
yes and this one is based on a Franz kafka novel (probably just butchered the authors name lol) truly ian Curtis was a lyrical genius and the music accompanies the lyrics he wrote 100%
Well as an 19 year old in Liverpool, joy division came my go to band to see in early 1979. I loved them. For 20 years after that, nobody, nobody, mentioned them. They felt like my secret. But then they seemed to get a lot of attention. Their songs where in movie or TV soundtracks etc. People started asking me questions about what was it like to see joy division live. But after 20, 30, now 40 years when recalling those days I could not the see the band on those two classic albums was the same band I saw. This version of this song fixes that.
This is probably my favorite JD song because of the dynamic rhythm section and cold dark feel, the closer version is great too but ill go with raw on this song
This song will be playing during the end of days, lol been listening to joy division for many years, I just can't get enough of their music. It truly stirs something up inside, it's almost primitive. Love it 👍👍👍🍻🍻🍺🍺

Thanks for this. Had not seen this pic on the cover you have there. The one I saw from Anton Corbin was when Ian looked back at the camera as the other 3 went down the steps.
Without doubt THE best recorded version of this track. This is how the band sounded live (and how they wanted to sound on record, but Martin Hannett had other ideas)
Ive heard every song JD has writtten so many times ive lost count, this was recorded in 1979 before Closer was recorded, yes I prefer this version of colony than the Closer, but Closer as an Album is a masterpiece in its own right, the band has commented that they really liked the hard edge live, but the point is JD wouldnt have become as iconic without the productions of Martin Hannett "love will tear us apart" video version
Colony es la unica cancion del repertorio de joy divison en la que la produccion de martin hanett , no la enriquecio , esta version , mucho mas cruda es muy superior a la del disco closer .
Not really. In most cases it's a myth that Peel sessions were recorded live. The sessions were not broadcast live during the show (at least not in this era). They were pre-recorded a few weeks before the first broadcast, in a studio in Maida Vale, London. Bands had several hours to record 15 to 20 mins of music and were able to layer tracks and do overdubs etc., as in any other studio recording. Admittedly the time constraints probably kept overdubbing etc to a minimum, and some bands probably did just rock up, plug in, and play, but in most cases Peel session tracks are not, strictly speaking, live performances.
*The Awakening* “Resurrections” Death is a partition of the mind. It’s a permanent amnesia in one’s rebirth where only the physics of the soul remains in its momentum. Immortality is to be reborn with an awakening of one’s prior existence. Personally, I myself have no prior recollection of my identity, so either I am a new soul or an old one that died, but possibly the physics of my soul was close to conquering its mortality. Most people are mortal. They cannot grasp the truth. They become buried under in each lifespan driven only by momentum and not the self. To lose one’s soul is to forget who one is during the tests of rebirth. The immortals have a light like a fire in their minds that can be lit whereby they may grasp any truth they desire. Soon, they will grasp their awakenings and they shall live forever! A candle for the dead.
Not really sure what you're saying but all I'd say is listen to the piss poor version of this on Closer and compare it to what you can hear here. I think (I might be wrong) that this was recorded after the track had been recorded for Closer. If so, this must have been how the band wanted it to sound, rather than Hannett wanting the snare drum to be the lead instrument.
This version was recorded in November 1979. The version on Closer was recorded with Hannett in March 1980. I prefer the Closer version as the lyrics have been improved and it's more 'perfect'. But I really like this version too which I suspect they may have done in one take (i.e. recorded all playing at the same time) so it's closer :) to their live performances.
Agree completely. I wonder whether there might be a case to be made that JD's records might have been even better had they not been produced by Martin Hannett? I've always thought he was overrated (too obsessed with a loud snare drum sound for a start).
...JD's influences ran the gambit from Kraftwerk-Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and nothing, absolutely nothing JD ever composed could ever be mistaken for grunge. Hell, even that Grunge-Icon-Imbecile Cobain admitted he was heavily influenced by Flipper and flipper sure as Fk wasnt grunge! Thus endeth todays lesson, mein kinder
I dont about that,JD might have never developed and stays with a raw punk sound had it not been for Hannetts Ideas,I dont know but the RCA demos really were not that great, then came Martin and helped produce Unknown pleasures
*The True Pentagram* “The Mathematical Confusion Zone” The struggle to achieve clarity is never-ending. One is always attempting to reclaim the clarity of one’s childhood. This is a strange gift where we become driven and ruled over by those with knowledge. This is the gift of sacred geometry in the witch’s pentagram that wards of evil whereby the lesser clarity must perform acts of magic or miracles. This is the magical inspiration of the Celestial in the Three Fold Way where the gods become constellations. The social event causes confusion in complexity. One should always be prepared for battle for the deeper meaning will destroy a person’s soul. The propensity to not ingest a fact into one’s mind is perhaps one of the truer meanings of “as above, so below.” whereby one becomes locked in a wheel of continuous perception. This human attribute is echoed in the dark nature of the forest where one may begin to see ghosts and spirits or nymphs and sprites and lose their sense of direction. -Coils of the Serpents A/B/A/C/A/B/C For Mickey Mouse
@bala215 Who says Joy Division were the inventors of grunge, 24 year olds? Those of us who were around at the time would usually disagree strongly with such a remark..goth maybe, dark rock, likely and even possibly some sort of proto-thrash-like experiment but definitely not grunge.
Hardly a threat is it? The cynic in me thinks that you want this video to be taken down so people will watch your videos (with views so far of a whole 10 people), but I think you're better then that. You need a holiday.
The peel sessions is the definitive Joy Division recording.
Agree, esp. Colony and Sound Of Music. And I am a huge Hannett fan. Love the synth in the background and the raw guitar sound.
ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER!
Man, listen to that VOICE! Nobody even close!
I fucking love this version.
The JD Peel sessions are always the best. ❤
So powerful...love this JD song....
best recording of this track without a doubt ❤👍🏴🍺

I think I prefer JD live to their albums in general. The live material is much harder but still retains a very atmospheric presence
No
