- The Smothers Brothers perform the song, They Call The Wind Maria, on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

And now, Tom Smothers is gone. Had a long life, made a lot of people laugh. They stuck to their principles, produced great comedy...RIP, Tom Smothers. Thanks for the memories.
So, I guess you didn't like Dick?
Rest in power, Tommy.🎭
It's amazing that they were able to make a career out of this. lol!! amazing!!
In the early 60's when they were starting out folk singing was very popular. They were guests on the "Ed Sullivan Show" as well as a folk singing variety show called "Hootenany" which I only watched for "The Smothers Brothers," "Peter, Paul, and Mary" and "The Kingston Trio". I was only 5 or 6 at the time, or would have realized just how many musical icons were guests on that show at the beginning of their careers.😮😮❤
I always loved listening to The Smothers Brothers! 👍🏼 🎼🎵🎶
Most people mention a lot about them being a great comedy duo but forget to mention that they were musically talented as well. RIP Tommy Smothers you'll truly be missed. 🙏
The time when The Smothers Brother was on tv (Sunday nights if I remember correctly) had to be the golden age of tv.
And tommy was a champion yo yo performer. 😂
This video perfectly captures their talent. Just when you are doubting them because of their comedy, they turn it around and finish with a well performed song.
They were a great talent and Tommy will be greatly missed.😢😢😢
RIP Tommy and thank you for your comedy and musical talent 😇
The comedy was gold...Always!
But the wonderful harmonies and the lovely songs they chose to perform were always so special.
Truly masters at entertaining and causing us to laugh and think at the same time, the Smothers Brothers have left a joyous and thoughtful mark on our world.
Goodbye Tommy, you did well.
I have always loved them. ❤❤
You put that so well! ❤️
Thank God I got to see them at a county fair in person and left happy
Not sure what's better, their comedy or singing -- I love them both.
I never actually enjoyed their comedy. I found it to be forced and artificial, mainly dependent upon pretended stupidity. I didn’t appreciate that.
I always loved the music.
Great musicians as well as comedians. They had so much great talent on their show. I miss those days so much.
I was a young child when their show was on CBS but I certainly remember watching it and it was one of my favorites. Sonny & Cher, Carol Burnett, the Bob Hope and Andy Williams Christmas specials....those were the good old days for sure. 😊
@@carmarasmussen8118 part of the golden age...
Good, clean entertainment.
The voices of these brothers blend perfectly!
And they were brothers in name only.
I used to watch their TV show, very entertaining n mostly silly. But I had forgotten just how beautifully they could sing together. Lovely harmony, thanks for posting
@@nooneyouknowhere6148 uh, no, not in name only, unless you have some insider intel...
My god, they were so young, and I had forgotten how talented! A breath of fresh air during the horrible years of the '60s. Rest in peace, Tommy. "Waist deep in the big muddy, and the big fool said to move on..." Some of us do remember.
There were good times during the 1960 also.
Richard Shindell does an excellent job Big Muddy. Look him up
Yes, we do. That exact phrase …😊
RIP Tommy Smothers you will forever be a part of my childhood feel good memories.
GREAT TALENT (music and comedy)!
😆You do know “mechiah” is an actual Hebrew word. It refers to a welcome, refreshing intervention. Like a breeze on a stiflingly hot day. Said breeze would be a mechiah. Btw, he pronounced it perfectly!👏🏻 10/‘23. Man, I miss them.
I read they are touring this year, 2023, at 84 and 86 years. Looking for tickets.
Tommy Smothers, uniquely talented, creative and brave. Rest in power, Tommy. We were lucky to share time with you on this globe.
I pray the warmth of the sun, the breeze of mechiah, and shalom of those who drank from the water of Marah after Moshe threw in the branch and also who followed the statutes of Yahweh as he spoke to His people while at Marah. I suppose that's a long blessing in the zeitgeist of today. Peace.

What a sublime rendition…a genuinely funny bit that segues to a disarmingly perfect cover. Bravo!
GREAT PERFORMANCE! Comedy and music PERFECTLY BLENDED! I grew up watching these guys! LOVED THEM!
Their voices harmonized so beautifully.❤️❤️❤️
Wow! I was looking and looking for this, an example of these two guys singing a whole song start to finish, without throwing in jokes. They did it! The comedy came first, and then nothing but great playing and harmony. Yay!
Nothing beats sibling harmony
There are other individual songs... Some examples: "Long Time Blues", "That's My Song", "Down In the Valley".
There are also full or half albums. On "Two Sides of the Smothers Brothers", the second side is all singing. Dick has a solo album. There is an album that I think is called "The Smothers Brothers Play It Straight".
@@brendalg4Yes, I had that album, The Smothers Brothers Play It Straight. Wish I still had it!
@@DanielBarberMusic I wish the albums would use them playing instead of using an orchestra (or whatever it is).
There are some songs that have limited jokes , or they will sing a verse straight and do jokes, and then sing another verse straight. I count those because at least they finish the song eventually. As time went on, they seem to have given up finishing songs.
Some more I can think of... Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, I Never Will Marry, Mediocre Fred (Tom solo), Tom's Song (Tom solo), Jenny Brown
I was expecting it to stop too for a joke....Hahahahahahaha
@@brendalg4 great memory!
They were so DANG MUCH FUN !! Excellent singers and hilarious comedy too. Godspeed Tom! We will miss you.
I agree with all the positive comments. This is a beautiful rendition. It also demonstrates there is another way to provide variation other than the ubiquitous practice of changing keys. One can also change the tempo, whether slower, or faster as here. Bravo.
They are missed and hard to duplicate. What a great duo of talented brothers.
These guys sang like angels and their comedy was pure gold !!! 😁
Incredibly talented. Very rare in today’s entertainment industry. It is genuinely a great loss for Dick and Tom’s family. They broke the mold when these two were made. RIP Tommy 🙏
Tom had a good voice. Dick had/has a BEAUTIFUL voice.
Dick was funny. Tom was HILARIOUS!
They were a perfect duo.
Back when entertainment was really entertaining ..... pure, simple, and from the heart. I miss those days....
Many people today might be surprised to know the Smothers brothers did serious folk music. They were well known in the early 60’s during the folk music era. Tommy was the comedic genius who brought them international fame on many variety shows and their own comedy show on CBS.
I was honored to meet both of them about 20 years ago. It’s hard to believe that Tommy has passed on now. He will be missed.
The Smothers Brothers were part of what defined the 1960's.
I felt a loss when I heard of Tommy's passing. But he will live on in videos as long as we watch them. I'm grateful for this one. Great song. Great harmonies. Great musicians, besides being hilarious. There will never be another brother act like them.
I had forgotten how good those guys really were. RIP. Brother's always.
Beautiful song. Beautiful singing. RIP Tommy Smothers. We miss you already.
There will never be another Tommy Smothers. Brave and talented and supportive of other performers and totally unique! Rest in power!
I was fortunate enough to see them perform live in 2007. I was 3rd row center. It was magnificent!
They finished the song! I love the comedy, but there's a part of me that wants to hear the songs in their entirety. I love their music as much as the comedy.
I agree:)
They were wonderful when they were being serious, and played whole songs. Genuine talents.
They really could sing and play beautifully. What really made them special was that tension. You knew that Tommy was going to do some mischief but you never knew what form it would take.
With the passing of Tommy, it’s like part of my childhood is gone. RIP Tommy. We miss you already.
my parents were huge fans and we always watched their show. I had forgotten that they were indeed, excellent musicians as well as a comedy duo
Even as a teenager when it came out in '69, I loved this song. It's beautiful. And it's Mariah.
I'm a bad speller, however I thought it was Mariah😊
It's pronounced Mariah, but if you had the cast album from Paint Your Wagon, you'd see that it's spelled Maria.
Paint your wagon. Fun show. Worked on a stage production at Ohio State theater in the round in the late 50s. Love the Brothers!
I haven’t heard this since I was a teen in the ‘80’s! This brings back such memories!
Beautifully performed. Just to clarify, the song was written by Lerner and Loewe for "Paint Your Wagon".
Sung by Harbor Presnel in movie. Beautiful.
Harve Presnell. Better than this version.
Agreed, heard several versions of this song. His was the best, in my opinion. @@DeniseNelson-ob9jq
In 2004 I was working at La Guardia airport the Delta shuttle. One of the brothers walked up to me to get a ticket. I recognised the one with the moustache. I was so happy to see him. So friendly. As most of the workers there didn’t know who he was.
This one of the great songs from the musical Paint Your Wagon. It was also a good movie that had Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood singing of all people.
Well, we all would have been better off without Lee Marvin & Clint's singing, but the rest were great singers.
Brilliant comedians and social commentators, and amazing folk singers. RIP, Tommy. Continued long life, Dick.
I hope you're ok, Dick. We'll always miss Tommy! 💔
Yes. I wish I could write Dick personally and tell him how sorry I am for his loss. It’s all of our loss too.
They genuinely were beautiful singers .. such wonderful performers all around
They are just wonderful!
My new favorite version of this song.
And they managed to get through it without their usual antics!
I never heard them sing this song all the way through! A gift!
@@KateAnneNYCit's straight on the album too
That was beautiful! They are true artists.
I remember the episode they did this song. Never forgot it. Hauntingly beautiful.
R.I.P. Tommy...They sing beautifully together !
Many think of them as comedians and that they certainly were. But they were also excellent musicians. RIP Tommy.
One of my all-time favorite songs!
Fabulous! Take me back to those wonderful years. Cheers!
Two awesome voices, two together is pure music.
I will always love the Smothers Bros ❤
What a wonderful rendition...thank you for posting and reminding us all of this talent.
As much as I liked the comedy, I loved to hear them just sing. Such great harmony.
They were absolutely unique.
One of my very favorite songs by one of my favorite duos! Thanks………RIP Tommy.
They made my childhood by making me laugh all of the time. RIP ❤️🇨🇦
Beautiful. And they finished it. :)
I always loved their singing.
Omg, their voices are so beautiful!
The Brother's were so great with their comedy and God gave them so much talent for their singing!! Loved them!! RiP Tom!!💕💕💕💕
A stunning rendition!
One of my favorite songs of all time and sung so beautifully by these two.
They were incredible, I don’t think we appreciated them enough.
Wow I never knew they could sing like that. Just beautiful. RIP Tom.
Such a musical duet with a zany innocent craziness of Tom. We loved them and their fightw with the network to present things to the public. The execs could not control Tom and it made them crazy. We loved the for it.
Yes they were very good comedy duo , and a very awesome singing pair.
Fantastic. Could use artists like this today. I loved those guys.
This was the BEST version of the song! If you don't like the humor, the music was CLASSIC! These guys had REAL TALENT, for comedy and music!
This was beautiful.
It's easy to forget how good they really were.
Excellent singers excellent magicians. They are top-notch comedy too. They were excellent.
Words: Alan Jay Lerner, Music: Frederick Loewe. From the 1951 musical "Paint Your Wagon". Great version of this song, which is not a folksong of any kind, or even remotely related to a folksong, in case anyone is wondering. It would seem that they were were gently poking fun at the popularity of this song during the so-called "folk revival", it having been recorded by the Kingston Trio and Burl Ives, among others.
There's an earlier, black and white clip of the (very young) Smothers Brothers singing "I Talk to the Trees", which is also from "Paint Your Wagon". However, they didn't sing that one straight.
That's what they did! They did parodies and satires of songs. It's how their act originated. I am currently reading, "Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" by David Bianculli. It's excellent! It's brought be back to all these old clips!
I never had a chance to see the play, but "Paint Your Wagon" as a movie is a jaw dropping adventure! Just to see Clint Eastwood break out in song!!! Amazing!
Tommy Smothers, rest in power. A brave uniquely talented performer. Be Tommy Smothers today; do something creative and brave to make others think, and smile, and laugh out loud and maybe even make someone angry, but in a good way. 🗽🎭🗽
Thanks for pointing out that it was actually a Broadway song, not a folk song. But their rendition of it is just gorgeous and the lead-in pretty hilarious. Tommy, you'll be missed 😥
My grandmother adored them unlike any other pair of stars in any comedy show.
How I miss real entertainment that captures your soul! Our kids need this experience!
Kids nowadays would call this boring.
I was pretty little when they were on but I don’t recall them ever singing any song straight through like this.
I was juist a little kid sitting in front of the family TV watching their show every week................
They did an album and it's actually serious music and well done...if you can believe it.
“Paint your Wagon”. Harve Presnell sang this song in the movie. Folk songs are some of the best forms of music and song. Loved to watch The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Tommy Smothers was one the funniest and cutest men alive. Just adorable. Dick was always the serious one. Handsome, too! But, boy, could he sing! According to Tommy, their mother loved Dick the best. That was always part of their comedy routine. Was heartbroken when their show was canceled as they wouldn’t bow down to the powers that be nor compromise their principles. RIP, Tommy Smothers!
PS: Presnell wasn't that hard on the eyes either !
This is such a beautiful song. Always been a favorite.
Have to thank them for the glen Campbell show, offered their spot to him after they got cancelled 😢,both were great shows
Back in the 1980s my friend in college would sing "Way out west they have a name, for rain and wind and fire. The rain is Rain, the wind is Wind, and they call the fire Fire." :-D
I have loved their music since I was a kid. Their harmonies are outstanding ❤
Don't want to scan all the comments to see if anyone mentioned it before, but the song is from the Broadway musical "Paint Your Wagon" (1951). Lol, the brothers made up the whole Dutch origin story just to get in some wind/windmill jokes!
I'm so blessed that these two were part of my youth!
I had forgotten what fine musicians and singers they were!
They were so damn funny that you could occasionally forget what good singers they were
I saw these guys in Reno years and years ago. They were pretty funny and pretty good singers, too.
Always loved these guys
Love them! Beautiful song!
Such a perfect duet and duo. Laughs, some schmaltz, and a ton of love! Missed!
I am always a fan. R.I.P Tommy. 🎉
Ever since I was a little kid I loved these guys always. Once, I was in BHills & saw Tommy flying down Rodeo Drive in a sports car. I yelled. Waved & he waved back.
Love you Tommy. R.I.P. Thank you for everything. G
They Call the Wind Maria"is an American popular song with lyrics written by Alan J. Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe for their 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon, which is set in the California Gold Rush.
My favorite song from "Paint Your Wagon". I'm quite fond of the late Sir Christopher Lee's rendition of "Wandering Star", so hearing this was welcome.
I miss their show. Hard to believe now Tom has passed away. Love their music
RIP Tom Smothers. You and Dick made me laugh. Tou also brought se great comedy acts along. Pat Paulson and George Carlin(whom I had the pleasure of seeing twice live)
Love and Prayers from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️🇺🇸🙏✝️
Funny at the beginning, beautiful at the end! Rest In Peace Tommy.
Multi talented! Wonderful singers,, actors comedians... Etc!
Beautiful, these were the good old days 👍👍
This song was written by Lerner and Lowe for their Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon. A lovely cover here by The Smothers Brothers.
I am getting older and it saddens me to learn that Tom has passed. We had had so much beautiful music back in the day.
I grew up with the Smothers Brothers and it was a great time to grow up.
It was, indeed. ♥
I had forgotten just how good they were and how much I liked them. Glad to rediscover them.
Loved them..R.I.P Tommy
Tom was an incredible guitarist. It's not about soloing folks. Tom always played beautifully phrased rhythm passages. Their songs would fall flat without them.
