Mom is great! Super sharp for 91.
“Say what you mean, mean what you say” is sage advice, particularly in this day and age. The world needs more people like your parents.
91👀
This is a real parent... Putting their child and their life first before anything that the parent might personally want... Children need discipline, sure, but more than that, they need freedom to be who they want to be
It’s a nice sentiment, but actual parenting might not be as simplistic.
There’s something to be said for being a role model to your child and demonstrating the behaviour you want them to emulate. If you don’t happen to have what you want, or once you’ve become a parent something changes in your life to make you unhappy, keeping yourself stuck in that situation isn’t necessarily a positive thing to do for yourself or your kid.
It’s also not zero sum - being a parent doesn’t necessarily mean you have to put your kid’s wishes ‘in front’ of yours. There can be room for both.
Luv Neil’s Mom - you can understand his personality from seeing her -she even gave his show a plug!
“This is a real parent” wtf
What a treat to “meet” Dr. T’s mom!!! Now I know where his character & humor come from!!!
Bless you, Mom!!
You know what? Momma Tyson is exactly what I would've imagined her to be like: no-nonsense and nurturing, present and non-suffocating, and evidently a smart and strong person! Much love and respect!
Wisdom is ageless. It was nice to meet your mom. Thank you.
As a retired teacher I must say to Mrs Tyson, excellent reasoning and parenting. I was impressed by her not over praising, her attention to communication and her helping him understanding his choices instead of dictating rules.
WOW, after working 10 hours in the Healthcare. I just wanted to relax without hearing about the wars, economic issues and the disappointment of life to hear your mother's wisdom. Thank you!🎉
You are lucky to have such parents that allow their children to discover
Agree completely.
"You leave that table loving eachother"
This hits so hard
She’s a treasure, so beautiful and her strength shines thru ❤
A treat to watch son-mom talk.
I love how Neil melts when he looks at his mother. What a sweet sweet son you are. Beautiful relationship.
But the reason he melts is BECAUSE of the mother she was to him that love is mutual their is no bitter feelings
I see where he gets his patience, intellect, and calmness from. A true gift from God.
When mom said dad would’ve liked that very much, I shed a tear & I swear Neil did too right as the show ended❤
She definitely keeps him grounded. I liked that she firmly but lovingly corrected his recollection of certain details from his past. For example, he did receive praise; it just wasn't constant praise. His mother seems like a BRILLIANT being.
a meal with family is more than just a meal. sounds like a very respectful and positive way to raise a family. well done Ma'am. 🙂thank you for an educator, a man of science and a role model for many.
I love how it ended with a throwback to how things were in the home... He's doing an amazing thing and she's like oh that's nice... Lol. Brilliant
This interview is very touching. "Mom" talks about a parenting style that I embraced myself, raising my daughters. They are now in their 30s, and doing well in what they want in life, while we keep a very close relationship.
"Bochinches" is a Puerto Rican word that means "gossips/rumors". And gossip can be described as confusions if you wanna get technical and philosophical about it. Aside from that, I love this clip. Absolutely fascinating and brilliant examples of loving and healthy ways to parent your kids. Thank you mama Tyson for giving these examples. As someone who grew up in a Puerto Rican house hold, I seriously wish these parenting techniques where used, instead of spankings with belts and chancletas. Thank you again. :-)
* Bochinches
The embracing the "Why is that?" With an earnest answer is one of the most geniune things you can do. Even when it is the 20th one this trip, and doesn't make any sense why it could matter, but can see that somehow it does and might help them navigate it for themselves later on.
Especially enjoyed this one, big ups and kudos for the Mom and Pop, that brought this wonderful translator of the cosmos to us all ❤
Respect, Neil! The world would be a better place if there were more people like you! Greetings from Albania 🇦🇱
They have such a beautiful family relationship, especially when compared to the others of those days. Mother has so many years of wisdom, and impeccable morals. Thank you for sharing this ❤😊
Bright and beautiful at 91❤ my 90 year old beautiful grandmother has dementia and it's heartbreaking. I wish I had had more deep conversations with her about everything.
Yes, as mom says, thank you Neil for the books, greetings from Croatia!
What a beautiful conversation. It brought tears of joy to my eyes.
Wow! Didn't know your mom was boricua. That's amazing. I absolutely love this interview.
I remember the episode when you originally had her on Startalk ❤ 0:43 She's too funny. Your mother was absolutely adorable. I'm sure she was filled with so much insight, and spiritual wisdom, the best recipes. She tugs at your heart string a little for those of us who's grandmother and wise old aunties have gone forward to the next life. You don't realize how many questions you have to ask them, until you no longer can. My grandmother's energy is always there.... its like a low hymn.... especially on those strange days when the wind blows a certain kinda way. That's when their song gets a little louder.
This is lovely! Beautiful relationship you have with your mother.
Wow, Dr. Tyson! Your mom is 91 and still has such a sharp mind, that's amazing and incredible!
I'm so curious, what keeps her so mentally active and engaged at her age? I'd love to learn some tips for keeping my own brain sharp as I get older.
She evidently didn't get stuck in the past like many older adults do.
This is absolutely beautiful! Having parents that support you is vital for success! I am grateful for this Family existance. Thank you for giving birth to this precious soul, Mrs. Tyson.♥️
😊this video was so amazing. I have the same type of connection with my kids. It’s awesome to have that bond with your kids.
I remember watching the full episode. It was the best one!
My father is no longer with me. My mum is well and hopefully I won't have to leave a day without her. Appreciate the living parents daily!
The day the memory of someone is dead is the day the person died.
May our mothers and fathers be remembered forever!
So relaxing to watch.
Magnificent, wonderful mother!
You can see from whence Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s brilliance originated. His parents believed in opening the doors of opportunity for their kids and allowing them to be creative, letting them explore the world and nurturing their creativity.
Thank you for this lovely interview. Your family will always have this to cherish!!
What a precious & beautiful Mom? You're so lucky Neil. !!!!
😊❤ wonderful video ! Love you & your mother showing that Good parents do figure out how to help children learn & support better things during life. Enjoyed watching this today on my mama's birthday, who was so great, but passed away during my teenage years.
Thank you so much for this episode!
Trees of wisdom grow fruits of wisdom. Never truer words where spoken.
This just really made me smile on this beautiful Sunday. What a gem, your mom. 😊
Your mother is a gift!
One of the things I admire most about Colbert that also shows up in Momma Tyson is that they have a respect for science, and understand the benefits of that, and admires her scientist son, promotes what he does, but still has the Catholic faith. Her faith and Colbert's faith are strong enough to make jokes, strong enough to support science, and healthy enough that she is still a Catholic despite all of that. From this interview, it does not sound like Momma Tyson is unaccepting of Neil's different beliefs. That is exactly how it should be. "This is what I am and it is for me. Here is why. You believe what you want to and be your own person, even though one day I hope you find your way to me." Rather than the "You not believing makes me sad and I am going to constantly push you to follow my beliefs." Honestly, just a healthy mother and son relationship
Thanks Neil deGrasse Tyson's mom. ❤
This was beautiful. Thank you.
That was really great. Loved every moment of it.

Having undergrad degrees in Black Studies and Psychology with graduate studies in Intercultural Relations; by the way none of which am I any sort of expert. I've always found the family descriptions here as well in the whole series quite fascinating from a diverse intracultural home and life in general. Thanks, Neil every show is a treasure.
Beautiful Lady! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your son with us ❤
What a wonderful lady. ❤❤❤
Seems like such an incredible lady! And if I heard correctly and she is 91 she certainly doesn't look nor act it! God bless!
Your Mom is awesome!
*Tips for all dads*
Active listening builds emotional bonds; share quality time through activities you both enjoy. Foster open communication, making your child feel heard and valued. Lead by example, embodying the values you wish to instill. Encourage independence, supporting their decision-making and responsibilities. These practices nurture a strong, positive parent-child relationship.
Love you both n much respect

very nice moment 😍
Wow ❤❤ this the greatest mom gifted us Dr. Neil 🎉❤🎉 thank you mom
I thought YOU were impressive! I was wrong. Your MOM is AMAZING! That's why you are who you are!
When she mentioned people talking to each other by hand held devices even if they are in the same room, it made me think of my ex girlfriend. Sitting next to her and having to comment on her posts on facebook just to have a "conversation" with her. At first everyone reading thought it was cute but I was mad. I said that yes it would be cute if I didn't also know that I am sitting right next to her and she would not acknowledge me unless I messaged her or commented on her post. She responded by texting me. We are not together anymore.
I had to ban my friend from bringing his cell phone to my apartment when he came to visit. He would come here and sit with his face in his phone and not hear a single word anyone said to him, or contribute to the conversation in any way at all. He would say that he wanted to see a movie so I would get it, and he would not see a single second of it.
Being on a device has its time and place. If it starts to interfere with your interactions with other human beings in the physical world, then it is borderline rude and disrespectful. During the winter, my mother made us eat supper at the table as a family. No television, or anything else. During the summer we did not have to because we were all home all day, every day.
Warmth& love is what people want.😀
Wholesome
outstanding
Keep this up 👆 guys
That was really adorable ❤
Double plus bonus points for the Black Hole Lunchbox cameo in the background.

Oh to have a mom that was so cogent. My mom was great but she did not know how to glean the essentials from me. Gorgeous woman!
