I purchased one of these in early 2020. Same model year but with over 300k miles. Every light on the dash was on- BAS/ESP, ETS, ABS, CEL, SRS, Airbag off, the repeated flashing of the low-range light at start up, etc. lol... I painstakingly found and corrected every system back to factory functionality. It was surprisingly cheap to fix with a little bit of late-night forum crawling, the fantastic W163 community, and the help of eBay. These things are TANKS and will just keep on going! If the yaw-rate/lateral acceleration sensor that's unplugged doesn't fix your three lights, it's more than likely worn brushes in your ABS pump motor. It can be fixed for about $20 and an hour of your time (some light soldering necessary). My weird WOT misfires ended up being worn plugs (and boy were they), so a regular 16 plug tune-up fixed that. Others have claimed if you get multiple cylinders claiming misfire on one bank, could be clogged cat on that side, foremost heated oxygen sensor (it's probably this), vacuum leak, etc... Feel free to PM/DM me with any questions as I've probably already been down that road before 😂 ... All this being said- I've put nearly 10k more trouble-free miles on it the past 12mo and love the stupid thing.
What year model is yours? Im about to buy one, its got full service records, but im gettting cold feet as the petrol gauge doesn’t read if tank is above 3/4 full. The bas/esp light has come on after hitting a pot hole yesterday, he said he fixed the abs pump, rebuild recently. Getting worried lol what are your thoughts? Any input would be really appreciated.
I have a 2014 E550, a 2022 G550 and 2000 ML55 with 221000 miles. Bought them all new. The 2000 ML55 is my favorite it’s my daily driver. Love the look and the torque. It’s Just more fun to drive.
Gotta love that 5.4 naturally aspirated V8 sound, it's too bad even the future C63 AMG is going to be a hybrid 4 cylinder car🥲

I have a '98 ML320, picked it up for $1200 back in December. Absolutely love it. I never considered owning an ML before, hell I forgot they existed after Hoovie finished with his AMG. Mine has 276k miles and runs like a champ, no issues at all.
Hesitation and rough idle can be as simple as oxygen sensors but you said it has a custom exhaust on, which if done improperly then that could be your issue. Then it could be down to plugs, injectors, throttle body itself or much more. Definitely start with plugs, check the injectors and O2 sensor if it still has them.

Only downside with the w163 is the rust, which preventative maintenence can fix. Awesome cars these are, good purchase.

These are really cool vehicles and I’d be lying if I said I have never considered one, or a e53 X5. But unless you get lucky and had a good responsible prior owner(s)…these are not the move, Gx470 is. Maybe even a first gen MDX. I get that they are not as exciting but this German crap just doesn’t hold up.
