Most villains have a good reason why they are what they are, people just can't see past the "evil". The world creates villains by abusing them from the start, then they become what they are, then "Heroes" want to end them. I would like to see the so called heroes dive into the roots of what made a villain a villain, then actually trying to save the person so engulfed with the horrors and despair of the world.
The sad reality is that these villains are often forged by the actions of other villains, and will continue to create more evil in the world on their path to avenging their own misfortune. That’s why at the end of the day, they have to be stopped. Because no amount of individual hardship is enough justification to force it upon even more innocents.
The backstory is basically that robotnik wants the chaos and máster emeralds to be the Lord of the world, and if you think that Sonic is a kids Game, probably robotnik does that because he wants to be powerful and no more

He created a robot that would kidnap people. In the future segments he drained every area of its natural resources and replaced everything with robots

Nathan Cameron actually, there is a canon robotnik like that. Specifically the anti Robotnik from the Archie comics. There he is a Mr. Rogers-esque personality who works tirelessly to improve lives and being a pacifist.
That's scary to think about cause there's been so many malfunctions that even Disney Land has had their dark days of someone getting crushed by the ride and It makes sense. Imagine how terrorifying it would be for hundreds of small harmless Animals to die all cause of a stupid flaw that could've been avoided. Makes sense.

Agreed. This video and backstory makes Dr. Eggman more of a sympathetic villain. It doesn’t excuse the horrible things he had done, but his dark and tragic story is why Eggman turned evil to begin with.

I also think that the sudden execution of his grandfather Gerald Robotnik, the death of his dear cousin Maria, him growing up without a mother and him having a shitty, abusive father took much of a toll on Dr. Eggman. His dark and tragic story is why he turned evil, and why his theme park ended up being an enslavement camp. He blamed his insanity all on Sonic, but the truth is that he was becoming insane even before Sonic came into the picture.

Honestly rewatching this I think the saddest part in his story is the fact that his friends didn’t even pass away or anything like his other loved ones, he simply just couldn’t find them and we never know what happened to them, at least for eggy or the rest of his family he found out or experienced their deaths but for his friends who treated him the best and definitely had him at his best simply just faded away which arguably makes it the saddest loss…

This is a great fan movie for a very underrated video game villan. It shows how abuse, tradegy, emotional misunderstanding, lack of love, and misplaced ambition can turn anyone into a monster. 31:50 "All I hope is that I don't fall into the same darkness as my father Harold Robotnik did" that line definitely stays with me.

and all the loop-de-loops which serve no apparent purpose other than the fact they are fun. Although he was trying to stop Sonic from reaching him, it's almost as if he wanted Sonic to have fun trying to do so. Like he was having Sonic try out some ideas he could use in an actual theme park, there's every chance every level was being monitored by a badnik drone with a camera and Robotnik was watching Sonic navigate the levels and seeing how much fun Sonic was having. Perhaps making notes like "Sonic particularly enjoyed the loops I put in Act 2 of this zone, that would be worth using in my future theme park".

I know this shows Robotnik as a good person, but remember who's telling the story, that's right, Eggman himself. We know Eggman is no stranger to lying and is likely to be fabricating this story to make himself look like the victim Whether it's real or not my theory, you did a great job with your story and it's going to be my Headcanon from now on.
That has to be it, because he's definitely an evil man. He's polluted several tropical paradises. He blew up half the moon. He's tried to build his own personal theme park/city and reign as supreme dictator numerous times. He tried to mind control the whole planet that one time. He DID take over the world for half a year. Robotnik Land is more of a reference to what would later on become Eggman Land, which is directly from Sonic Unleashed, and not Sonic Colors where the whole story revolves around a twisted vision of his dreams now made into a mere cover-up for some twisted ideas of world domination.
Fun fact: Everything Robotnik uses in the games is 100% based on EVERYTHING his grandfather researched back in the day. Aerospace engineering, robotics, cybernetics, archeology, Exotic Physics (Chaos Theory).
@GodZpeed X7 Gerald developed GUN's security robots. Robotnik made his own robots. Gerald had aerospace stuff going on (EVEN PUT HIS FACE ON THE ARK). Robotnik would make not just the Eggman Armada (which is full aerospace capable by Colours), he would make the Death Egg with his face on it. He took up Archeology to figure out things that his Grandfather did, leading him to Chaos, Emerl, Iblis's Flames of Disaster, and Dark Gaia. Where Gerald came up with the Chaos Energy systems in the Ark and the Chaos Drive, Eggman built the Chaos Energy-compatible transmission systems in his Death Egg Robot and in Mechanical Sonic, and even Metal Sonic can harness similar power sources. It's all fact.
Gerald Robotnik's research on the Hidden Palace's mural led to development of Project Shadow, his attempt to recreate the Ultimate Life Form he saw engraved in the murals. The first prototype was based on the "dragon" described in Sonic 3's manual (Chaos), which became the Biolizard - which makes sense, considering lizards have the ability to regenerate parts of their body, perfect for Gerald's search for the cure for Maria. The second version, Shadow, was based on the hedgehog figure he saw in the mural. The spikes pointing upward makes Shadow resemble Super Sonic. The Artificial Chaos in the Ark stages from SA2 and Shadow game shows Gerald also toyed with recreating Chaos as he originally was.
I think that Robotnik shouldn’t become a psycho. I want him to stay the hero, and make Sonic seem like the hero, yet in Robotnik’s perspective, he is revealed to be an obnoxious blue hedgehog who misunderstands the situation.

It makes sense. Think about how frustrating it is to fail over and over. Now imagine that the thing you're failing at is your only mission in life. Now imagine that the thing keeping you from succeeding at your goal, one that would aid all people on the planet, is being continually stopped again and again by a snarky little 15 year old asshole with an eye and a half taking up his entire face. Mix in a horrifying childhood and some wartime PTSD, and the outcome becomes completely justified.
No joke, when he realized what the password to Gerald's workshop was I had a sudden swell of emotions and almost cried. This is a truly beautiful and tragic story.
5 years or so ago now, I, a fragile middle schooler, watched this video naively believing it would be some history of Robotnik as a fictional character. Though I didn't get what I was expecting, I stuck around, it was cool. But the death of Eggy truly shook me. Though I still watched the video through, it left me seriously discomposed and, frankly, traumatized. I was out of it for a few days and I think the association with the Death Egg Zone theme may be part of the reason I too this day don't really vibe with Sonic 2. This video honestly fucked me up. But today, looking back on it, I, stronger, can say... this is an incredible piece of work. The way the tragedies are built up to is masterful and I know now the absolute state I was in all that time ago was the result of an expert in their craft. Bravo.

Really cool video with nice sketches! Made me connect the dots based on what was heavily implied. Honestly, the story of Sonic Unleashed just makes this whole backstory of Robotnik even worse. What he originally wanted to make was "Robotnikland", a place of fun and joy for all to experience. What he instead made (by Unleashed) was "Eggmanland", an engineering clusterfuck of hazardous carnival rides guaranteed to torture, if not kill, those unfortunate enough to be forced in them. All of this was fueled by the energy of a monstrosity rotting the planet from the inside out and exhaled into the environment as devastating chemical pollutants, visualized by the crimson red & smog-filled sky, hardly something that would benefit the environment or people, like Robotnik originally wanted. It's even symbolized by the entrance to the park in his original vision vs what he created. In Robotnikland, the entrance is Robotnik smiling and it looks like he's happy. In Eggmanland, the entrance is Robotnik frowning and wearing his goggles... but that's not Robotnik anymore, that's Eggman. It's quite noticeable that Robotnik went completely insane by embracing the insult that Sonic branded him with as his actual being and, through consecutive failure after failure, lost all rational he had and incorporated the evil cliches Sonic labeled him with as a necessity and must be made a reality for his dream to come true. Robotnikland, now Eggmanland, became all Robotnik ever wanted, not realizing the truth behind what Robotnik slowly degraded himself into, an insult of his past ambitions, a true and pure manchild with desires interpreted from the lenses of his narrowly-perceived decaying perception of happiness. He doesn't care about anything at that point, he has Eggmanland. Do people want to be there, or is it good for the environment? It doesn't matter, he has his amusement park and he can be in it alone, forever and ever. The concept imprisoning his mind now became a physical reality.
Honestly, that shows very well how Sonic and Eggman's rivalry led to nothing but more chaos, and caused his mind to devolve into insanity. Sometimes, violence doesn't solve everything. And to show how Eggman devolved into insanity, in Sonic Generation, even Robotnik points out his future self's insanity when he starts maniacally laughing.
God, this is amazing. It's hard to make an audience emotional, and even harder sometimes to make them feel for villainous characters, but with almost every tragic event in this story, you accomplish that well. I also really enjoyed how his animal-powered robots were actually made relatively humane. This made me appreciate Eggman so much more.
“All I hope is that I don’t fall into the same darkness my father, Harold Robotnik, did.” *Approximately 10 years later* “I’m gonna destroy Station Square to construct RobotnikLand!” Edit: I feel like this origin story is pretty compatible with the video game canon, because I believe Sonic drove Eggman insane later on, forgetting his original motive and becoming increasingly obsessed with Sonic’s destruction.
Remember that Egg Dragoon's bossfight in Sonic Unleashed? Eggman was really insane in that game tbh, he didn't gave crap about anything as he unleashed Dark Gaia cuz he wanted to build Eggmanland. And after Sonic ruined his plans, hopes, dreams & overall knowledge that D Gaia will destroy everything (Or he had no knowledge about it cuz of sheer rage he felt) made him snap & spend his last moments trying to kill Sonic & saying things he bottled up for years
That... actually a fitting quote to use for Robotnik. Especially in Fleetway where - spoiler alert, as you should go and read it - it turns out that he and Sonic were once friends before he turned evil.
I've had this video in my recommended for weeks, always putting it off and clicking away for what I assumed to be a retelling of old knowledge... But this, this is much more than any of what I could have expected. He never struck me as the type to truly feel human, because the games never let you feel that. He's always out for himself, but here, he feels human. It's a bit ironic, he who works best with machines is shown to have some of the most humanity. I don't think I'll ever quite look at him the same again.
Tell me about it. It was so much easier labelling him as a villain, but now I don't have the heart to say he deserved to have his work destroyed for being a bully when in reality he's a victim 😔
The fact that A) he started out with good intentions, and B) that his dog was killed bye his FATHER of all people, makes this one of the saddest videos I've ever seen.
I can imagine that Robotnik is telling this to Sonic and his friends after using a device that can rip open one-way portals to individual containment cells. Also, he would have each one designed to negate any and all of Sonic's and his friends abilities.
Honestly I still remember watching this years ago. I know some people may think its corny giving Eggman such a complicated and kinda depressing backstory, but I think it works, and makes sense. I like how a lot of the stuff that happens foreshadows things in the future, like his motive for Robotnikland starting as a childhood fascination with amusement parks, and his background as a soldier would explain his knowledge of battle tactics and war machines. Its a smart backstory and it didn't feel forced. I'd say there's just a few suggestions I wanted to point out that I think would've been better, in my opinion. Like I wish we got some closure on the Hippie group, they just dissappeared without trace. I dunno, I just think with how close their relationship was to Robotnik, especially Clover, I kinda wish we got some explanation as to where they were or anything of the sort. Another thing, while this is definitely a great backstory, I feel like there's one thing missing. Sonic doesn't have any attachmeng at all to it. Which I suppose isn't bad on its own, but I just feel like it would've been more satisfying if Eggman's story was connected to Sonic in some way. Those are just my thoughts though, great video.

I feel like this could really be a great canon origin for Robotnik. It's also easy to morph him into the megalomaniac he would become later on via taking inspiration from the old Sonic: The Comic. Like with Doctor Ovi Kintobor, have him find and experiment on the Chaos Emeralds, and have an accident (probably caused by Sonic as well) get him dosed with Chaos energy that drives him crazy, magnifying his darker, more twisted parts of his personality.
Plot Twist; The untold issue, is that he got so attached to his desire of achieving his dream, he eventually started caring for it and only for it, he stopped considering he could be wrong, he stopped caring for his own species, all he ended up caring about, was his urge to fulfill his dream and bring it upon reality, no matter what gets in his way, nor who he has to destroy in order to achieve it.. but even then, he really wants to make the world a better place, Ivo's just doing bad actions, with a good purpose.. one way another, that's a man you could admire.
That was amazing! Great imagination on creating a realistic & sympathetic back story for a 2D villain that makes him relatable in order to understand what drives him. WELL DONE!

I would've loved the idea that Robotnik actually made sonic as a power source and slowly began to fall into a similar state to his father. With sonic originally being a normal briwn hedgehog but with some source making him The way he is now.
This is a really good backstory, and the fact Ivo wanted to build a theme park, which was taken out of the original idea of the first Sonic movie that was planned back in the 90s is a nice touch. But goddamn, Eggy’s death was just cruel.
I watched this right after seeing your Metal Sonic video. I appreciate how Eggman isn't painted as purely evil. Nobody sees themselves as the villain, so this feels like how he would actually describe himself.
In his quest to rid himself of the hedgehog that has ruined his dreams again and again, Dr. Robotnik simply snapped. He probably took the name Eggman to reflect how the hedgehog that named him such had driven him to be the monster that he became.
..Would you really necessarily call eggman a monster? The man's no Wiley. He has an IQ of 800 and has shown that with very little effort he can construct weapons of unprecedented power, but has never turned it towards terrorism. He has flirted with the idea of attempting to gain total Autonatity from other nations, both through displays of force or MAD but has never really seemed like he was willing to go through with it; Even when he dabbles with fairly negative and destructive powers; he's usually only doing it as a fuel alternative. I think its always been presented that, given his space, Robotnik has no designs further then simply building a Utopian Egopolis. A monument to himself, yes, but one in which human life would be pretty dang fantastic. There'd be no need to work, no suffering, and no shortage of anything. Technically even the animals are cared for, even if again loss of individual liberty in exchange for safety is a negative. Eggy's not a cackling tyrant. Heck, his second dream over 'amusement park ownership' along with brief flirtations of sovreignity is school teaching.
Anyone else notice when he went to the amusement park, it was the most fun he’d had in his entire life. The wording makes it sound like, too this day, he has never experienced a more joyful thing besides that till the day he recorded this.
I absolutely love this video, seeing not only a Darker and more serious Eggman but his motivations as well are phenomenal and I love it to bits. A perfect backstory stemming from this video to the Current Modern Day Eggman could be this same Eggman discovering Shadow's containment Vessel in search of ways to build his park strong enough for the Hedgehog to not destroy only to Come across a Video made by his own Grandfather cursing the very world he once worked for and telling his story to shatter the Doctor's dreams and make him realize how much this world seemed to hate him, the light in his humane eyes dying down. Then to take it a step further the video could self destruct in his face and disfigure him but permanently fusing his glases onto his eyes to take away the windows to his soul as he begins a quest for world domination in vengeance for his grandfather and his niece.
You know, I feel bad for Harold as well. He lost his wife, and just fell into a deep depression which he never got out of. There were even a few moments where he tried to be a good dad..He just snapped after the death of his wife and spiralled down 'till his eventual death.

Wow, this adds so much sense. What really blew my mind was when he was making the idea of workers & then remembered the failed prototype of what his father did, causing the reason he puts animals into robots. Very well thought backstory. It actually makes since to his character, also making the bad guy is really sonic in the situation.
I meant everything I said these are quite entertaining videos and the voice acting is stellar I hope you can make more "Their History Revealed" documentaries about the backstories of video game villains that weren't given one.
The fact that YEARS later and I still fully watch this video every time is a testament of how well made this video is. I'm happy more modern Egg man showings are seeing him as a sorta grey villian, one who cares for his workers but still has a goal. I honestly want a movie of this. It's amazing!
SLC SonAmy I like to see this more as Ivo's interpretation or a lie to make himself look better. Maybe all of those things happened but his robotization was harming animals and he developed a wish to take over the world, since this story ties into the Adventure series and there's no way to justify his actions there.

Nathan Cameron actually, there is a canon robotnik like that. Specifically the anti Robotnik from the Archie comics. There he is a Mr. Rogers-esque personality who works tirelessly to improve lives and being a pacifist.
That's scary to think about cause there's been so many malfunctions that even Disney Land has had their dark days of someone getting crushed by the ride and It makes sense. Imagine how terrorifying it would be for hundreds of small harmless Animals to die all cause of a stupid flaw that could've been avoided. Makes sense.

Agreed. This video and backstory makes Dr. Eggman more of a sympathetic villain. It doesn’t excuse the horrible things he had done, but his dark and tragic story is why Eggman turned evil to begin with.

I also think that the sudden execution of his grandfather Gerald Robotnik, the death of his dear cousin Maria, him growing up without a mother and him having a shitty, abusive father took much of a toll on Dr. Eggman. His dark and tragic story is why he turned evil, and why his theme park ended up being an enslavement camp. He blamed his insanity all on Sonic, but the truth is that he was becoming insane even before Sonic came into the picture.

Honestly rewatching this I think the saddest part in his story is the fact that his friends didn’t even pass away or anything like his other loved ones, he simply just couldn’t find them and we never know what happened to them, at least for eggy or the rest of his family he found out or experienced their deaths but for his friends who treated him the best and definitely had him at his best simply just faded away which arguably makes it the saddest loss…

This is a great fan movie for a very underrated video game villan. It shows how abuse, tradegy, emotional misunderstanding, lack of love, and misplaced ambition can turn anyone into a monster. 31:50 "All I hope is that I don't fall into the same darkness as my father Harold Robotnik did" that line definitely stays with me.

Like he was having Sonic try out some ideas he could use in an actual theme park, there's every chance every level was being monitored by a badnik drone with a camera and Robotnik was watching Sonic navigate the levels and seeing how much fun Sonic was having. Perhaps making notes like "Sonic particularly enjoyed the loops I put in Act 2 of this zone, that would be worth using in my future theme park".

Robotnik Land is more of a reference to what would later on become Eggman Land, which is directly from Sonic Unleashed, and not Sonic Colors where the whole story revolves around a twisted vision of his dreams now made into a mere cover-up for some twisted ideas of world domination.
Fun fact: Everything Robotnik uses in the games is 100% based on EVERYTHING his grandfather researched back in the day. Aerospace engineering, robotics, cybernetics, archeology, Exotic Physics (Chaos Theory).

Gerald had aerospace stuff going on (EVEN PUT HIS FACE ON THE ARK). Robotnik would make not just the Eggman Armada (which is full aerospace capable by Colours), he would make the Death Egg with his face on it.
He took up Archeology to figure out things that his Grandfather did, leading him to Chaos, Emerl, Iblis's Flames of Disaster, and Dark Gaia.
Where Gerald came up with the Chaos Energy systems in the Ark and the Chaos Drive, Eggman built the Chaos Energy-compatible transmission systems in his Death Egg Robot and in Mechanical Sonic, and even Metal Sonic can harness similar power sources.
It's all fact.
Gerald also did genetic engineering
Gerald Robotnik's research on the Hidden Palace's mural led to development of Project Shadow, his attempt to recreate the Ultimate Life Form he saw engraved in the murals. The first prototype was based on the "dragon" described in Sonic 3's manual (Chaos), which became the Biolizard - which makes sense, considering lizards have the ability to regenerate parts of their body, perfect for Gerald's search for the cure for Maria.
The second version, Shadow, was based on the hedgehog figure he saw in the mural. The spikes pointing upward makes Shadow resemble Super Sonic.
The Artificial Chaos in the Ark stages from SA2 and Shadow game shows Gerald also toyed with recreating Chaos as he originally was.

5 years or so ago now, I, a fragile middle schooler, watched this video naively believing it would be some history of Robotnik as a fictional character. Though I didn't get what I was expecting, I stuck around, it was cool.
But the death of Eggy truly shook me. Though I still watched the video through, it left me seriously discomposed and, frankly, traumatized. I was out of it for a few days and I think the association with the Death Egg Zone theme may be part of the reason I too this day don't really vibe with Sonic 2. This video honestly fucked me up.
But today, looking back on it, I, stronger, can say... this is an incredible piece of work. The way the tragedies are built up to is masterful and I know now the absolute state I was in all that time ago was the result of an expert in their craft. Bravo.

Really cool video with nice sketches! Made me connect the dots based on what was heavily implied.
Honestly, the story of Sonic Unleashed just makes this whole backstory of Robotnik even worse. What he originally wanted to make was "Robotnikland", a place of fun and joy for all to experience. What he instead made (by Unleashed) was "Eggmanland", an engineering clusterfuck of hazardous carnival rides guaranteed to torture, if not kill, those unfortunate enough to be forced in them. All of this was fueled by the energy of a monstrosity rotting the planet from the inside out and exhaled into the environment as devastating chemical pollutants, visualized by the crimson red & smog-filled sky, hardly something that would benefit the environment or people, like Robotnik originally wanted.
It's even symbolized by the entrance to the park in his original vision vs what he created. In Robotnikland, the entrance is Robotnik smiling and it looks like he's happy. In Eggmanland, the entrance is Robotnik frowning and wearing his goggles... but that's not Robotnik anymore, that's Eggman. It's quite noticeable that Robotnik went completely insane by embracing the insult that Sonic branded him with as his actual being and, through consecutive failure after failure, lost all rational he had and incorporated the evil cliches Sonic labeled him with as a necessity and must be made a reality for his dream to come true. Robotnikland, now Eggmanland, became all Robotnik ever wanted, not realizing the truth behind what Robotnik slowly degraded himself into, an insult of his past ambitions, a true and pure manchild with desires interpreted from the lenses of his narrowly-perceived decaying perception of happiness. He doesn't care about anything at that point, he has Eggmanland. Do people want to be there, or is it good for the environment? It doesn't matter, he has his amusement park and he can be in it alone, forever and ever. The concept imprisoning his mind now became a physical reality.
Honestly, that shows very well how Sonic and Eggman's rivalry led to nothing but more chaos, and caused his mind to devolve into insanity.
Sometimes, violence doesn't solve everything.
And to show how Eggman devolved into insanity, in Sonic Generation, even Robotnik points out his future self's insanity when he starts maniacally laughing.

God, this is amazing. It's hard to make an audience emotional, and even harder sometimes to make them feel for villainous characters, but with almost every tragic event in this story, you accomplish that well. I also really enjoyed how his animal-powered robots were actually made relatively humane. This made me appreciate Eggman so much more.

I've had this video in my recommended for weeks, always putting it off and clicking away for what I assumed to be a retelling of old knowledge... But this, this is much more than any of what I could have expected. He never struck me as the type to truly feel human, because the games never let you feel that. He's always out for himself, but here, he feels human. It's a bit ironic, he who works best with machines is shown to have some of the most humanity. I don't think I'll ever quite look at him the same again.

I can imagine that Robotnik is telling this to Sonic and his friends after using a device that can rip open one-way portals to individual containment cells. Also, he would have each one designed to negate any and all of Sonic's and his friends abilities.

Honestly I still remember watching this years ago. I know some people may think its corny giving Eggman such a complicated and kinda depressing backstory, but I think it works, and makes sense. I like how a lot of the stuff that happens foreshadows things in the future, like his motive for Robotnikland starting as a childhood fascination with amusement parks, and his background as a soldier would explain his knowledge of battle tactics and war machines. Its a smart backstory and it didn't feel forced.
I'd say there's just a few suggestions I wanted to point out that I think would've been better, in my opinion. Like I wish we got some closure on the Hippie group, they just dissappeared without trace. I dunno, I just think with how close their relationship was to Robotnik, especially Clover, I kinda wish we got some explanation as to where they were or anything of the sort.
Another thing, while this is definitely a great backstory, I feel like there's one thing missing. Sonic doesn't have any attachmeng at all to it. Which I suppose isn't bad on its own, but I just feel like it would've been more satisfying if Eggman's story was connected to Sonic in some way. Those are just my thoughts though, great video.

I feel like this could really be a great canon origin for Robotnik. It's also easy to morph him into the megalomaniac he would become later on via taking inspiration from the old Sonic: The Comic. Like with Doctor Ovi Kintobor, have him find and experiment on the Chaos Emeralds, and have an accident (probably caused by Sonic as well) get him dosed with Chaos energy that drives him crazy, magnifying his darker, more twisted parts of his personality.

Plot Twist; The untold issue, is that he got so attached to his desire of achieving his dream, he eventually started caring for it and only for it, he stopped considering he could be wrong, he stopped caring for his own species, all he ended up caring about, was his urge to fulfill his dream and bring it upon reality, no matter what gets in his way, nor who he has to destroy in order to achieve it.. but even then, he really wants to make the world a better place, Ivo's just doing bad actions, with a good purpose.. one way another, that's a man you could admire.

I would've loved the idea that Robotnik actually made sonic as a power source and slowly began to fall into a similar state to his father. With sonic originally being a normal briwn hedgehog but with some source making him The way he is now.

I like to imagine he once saw Star Wars and was fascinated by the design of the Death Star.
This is a really good backstory, and the fact Ivo wanted to build a theme park, which was taken out of the original idea of the first Sonic movie that was planned back in the 90s is a nice touch. But goddamn, Eggy’s death was just cruel.
I watched this right after seeing your Metal Sonic video. I appreciate how Eggman isn't painted as purely evil. Nobody sees themselves as the villain, so this feels like how he would actually describe himself.
In his quest to rid himself of the hedgehog that has ruined his dreams again and again, Dr. Robotnik simply snapped. He probably took the name Eggman to reflect how the hedgehog that named him such had driven him to be the monster that he became.
..Would you really necessarily call eggman a monster?
The man's no Wiley. He has an IQ of 800 and has shown that with very little effort he can construct weapons of unprecedented power, but has never turned it towards terrorism.
He has flirted with the idea of attempting to gain total Autonatity from other nations, both through displays of force or MAD but has never really seemed like he was willing to go through with it; Even when he dabbles with fairly negative and destructive powers; he's usually only doing it as a fuel alternative.
I think its always been presented that, given his space, Robotnik has no designs further then simply building a Utopian Egopolis. A monument to himself, yes, but one in which human life would be pretty dang fantastic. There'd be no need to work, no suffering, and no shortage of anything. Technically even the animals are cared for, even if again loss of individual liberty in exchange for safety is a negative.
Eggy's not a cackling tyrant. Heck, his second dream over 'amusement park ownership' along with brief flirtations of sovreignity is school teaching.

Anyone else notice when he went to the amusement park, it was the most fun he’d had in his entire life. The wording makes it sound like, too this day, he has never experienced a more joyful thing besides that till the day he recorded this.
I absolutely love this video, seeing not only a Darker and more serious Eggman but his motivations as well are phenomenal and I love it to bits. A perfect backstory stemming from this video to the Current Modern Day Eggman could be this same Eggman discovering Shadow's containment Vessel in search of ways to build his park strong enough for the Hedgehog to not destroy only to Come across a Video made by his own Grandfather cursing the very world he once worked for and telling his story to shatter the Doctor's dreams and make him realize how much this world seemed to hate him, the light in his humane eyes dying down. Then to take it a step further the video could self destruct in his face and disfigure him but permanently fusing his glases onto his eyes to take away the windows to his soul as he begins a quest for world domination in vengeance for his grandfather and his niece.
You know, I feel bad for Harold as well. He lost his wife, and just fell into a deep depression which he never got out of. There were even a few moments where he tried to be a good dad..He just snapped after the death of his wife and spiralled down 'till his eventual death.

Wow, this adds so much sense. What really blew my mind was when he was making the idea of workers & then remembered the failed prototype of what his father did, causing the reason he puts animals into robots. Very well thought backstory. It actually makes since to his character, also making the bad guy is really sonic in the situation.
Robotnik's father is the real villain here, Sonic just thinks he's doing slavery and wants to be a hero
From Sonics point of view: eggman is evil and heartless, but he is really just misunderstood

The fact that YEARS later and I still fully watch this video every time is a testament of how well made this video is. I'm happy more modern Egg man showings are seeing him as a sorta grey villian, one who cares for his workers but still has a goal. I honestly want a movie of this. It's amazing!

SLC SonAmy I like to see this more as Ivo's interpretation or a lie to make himself look better. Maybe all of those things happened but his robotization was harming animals and he developed a wish to take over the world, since this story ties into the Adventure series and there's no way to justify his actions there.
