🇬🇧 Oh so weird! I'm a fairly old granny now but as an Art Student in the early 1970s I was in Tibet & travelling round to different places, we ate loads of honey with meals. I don't think it was Mad Honey, but being up in the Himalayas with it's high altitude & ratified air, it could have been mad honey, as it takes a while to acclimatise & often times my friends & I felt rather " drunk" but we didn't drink any alcohol. Also we felt fairly happy most of the time & laughed at everything, which made us giddy & light headed We believed it was the high altitude Maybe not though. What I did like but none of my friends did, was the Yak Tea Which was a sort of herbal green tea flavoured with Yak Butter It smells abit pongy, but it's only mildly cheesy-ish. The tea is hot & could be described as greasy but I didn't think so, it's an acquired taste & is refreshing & eases up your muscles & helps energy levels when hiking about. It can be sweetened with honey for European tastes. I think we may have smoked some questionable herbal tobacco in pipes but I honestly hadn't taken drugs before so wouldn't know if we were stoned or not but do clearly remember laughing all the time, feeling not a care in the world & a great sense of wellbeing, healthily so. So whether it was the rarified air, mad honey or herb pipes, I felt so strong healthy & full of energy but incredibly mellow... 🤗 Thanks for the vid Hope you had a blast later Joe. I had a friend bring me some honey from the Moroccan mountains. 1 batch was very dark and burned when you ate it. The other batch was bright white, almost like milk. Both were wild honey. You can't beat the quality of that honey. Those bees gather nector from various herbs to produce the honey.

Well, there are ways to extract honey sustainably, such as providing more sugar water for bees to survive the cold period (that's what they store honey for in the first place). Maybe there's a way to build apiaries there and harvest it as a sustainable resource, which would both bring wealth to your country, the beekeepers and increase the bee population. It will mean that these flowers that contain the medicinal chemical will need to be planted more as well.

Smoke is to calm the bees. When the bees sense the smoke, their instinct tells them theres a fire and they may have to leave the hive. So they gorge themselves with honey and it calms them down. It's amazing the difference smoke makes in calming the bees. I've been keeping bees for 25 years.

A couple things for you to think of: 1) the smoke decreases the oxygen concentration in the air, which causes insects to become more docile (think of it like a mild hibernation). That's why they won't harass you as much (same with mosquitos around fire) 2) the itchiness in the back of your throat is probably due to a mild allergic reaction to pollen you are not used to, this is often the case with foreign substances that you (or your ancestors) aren't often exposed to, especially allergens. A couple things for you to think of:
1) the smoke decreases the oxygen concentration in the air, which causes insects to become more docile (think of it like a mild hibernation). That's why they won't harass you as much (same with mosquitos around fire)
2) the itchiness in the back of your throat is probably due to a mild allergic reaction to pollen you are not used to, this is often the case with foreign substances that you (or your ancestors) aren't often exposed to, especially allergens.

That local honey thing is 100% true, I bought wildflower honey from a local bee keeper and the difference between that and the store bought honey is night and day!
or you could just read the ingredient list and see how watered down the honey they sell commercially is lol
also a good source of local allergens/pollens to help you build up a tolerance!

A lot of store bought honey is clover, not wildflowers so that makes a difference in taste. But I agree the local honey in my area is really good. 😊

People might be surprised but almost everyone in Nepal knows some story related to eating the honey from these bees. Commonly called 'bhir mauri' which translates to 'cliff bees'. Most people will tell you stories of how someone they knew overdosed on this honey and what happend to them. So people are well aware not to take too much. People in Nepal popularly consume it for it's medicinal qualities over its hallucinogenic qualities. Also its only during spring season (I think) where the honey is very potent since thats the same time that these flowers grow. The honey is available throughout the year but the potent ones are only available during a specified season. Also the sellers will advice not to drink water after it (idk why tho).
Also everyone reading this come to Nepal. You'll probably see some of the best sceneries you have ever seen in your life here. Not my words, just from the people that have been here.

@@wok138 I dont know. My mom told me that the guy that sold it to her had said not to drink water after it. So she told me the same as well. So I never really tried to drink water after it. I dont think anything will really happen if you drink a small cup of water. But it might have some negative effects if you drink like a big glass of water. I didnt really wanna experiment on myself.

I only had a table spoon of the honey.The experience sucked, I felt like I rubbed Icy Hot all over my body including my face. I had a hard time walking up and down the stairs and it lasted it for about 2 days. I don't recommended it.

The important part they left out if that this is rhododendron honey. Just like commercial honey labels will list it as clover or wildflower honey. This leads me to consider what other flowering plants could be used to make honey and the potential medicinal properties we have yet to discover.
Anything with pollen and a flower a bee will make honey out of, they even will drink up sugar water.
Word to the wise if you have a good idea keep it to yourself until it comes into fruition. ✍🏽 come up with a process and get a patent. Go from there.

There's an excellent book by Adrienne Mayor called "Greek Fire, Poison Arrows and Scorpion Bombs, Biological and Chemical Warfare of the Ancient World"
It reads like it might have been her thesis paper and got published. It's a fantastic read and includes how they would abandon the village before the invasion, leave the mad honey behind, the invaders would eat it, celebrate victory, pass out and/or possibly die, and the villagers would come back when they were incapacitated and finish them off.
