  • For centuries, the Gurungs, an indigenous people, have been the only ones to harvest "mad honey" from their cliff in Nepal. The honey has hallucinogenic properties and finding it is a big part of the Gurungs' culture. We followed the village's main honey hunter to find out why this ancient tradition is still happening and what makes it such a risky business.

First I thought it was Mad Honey because of the hallucinogenic properties of the honey, but then I realised it was because of how risky it was to get the honey.

Yea, but there are a few things though that could be better. For one, if mad honey are poisonus and halusogenic, how can they export it to strict drug and health countries as US. Is it a fake product and the doc makers promoted a fake product?. Second are this kind of doc always follow the same pattern. Lots of talk about how dangerous it is, money ,money ,money, and then about climate change and the impact it has. In nepal, most mountaines region ever, i think the developers say it because it makes them look good, maybe

I am a Gurung, and 'mad honey hunting' is one of our culture among many. But it is sad to say this culture is slowly dissappearing. Ive never seen any Nepalese media covering this, or promoting about it.

they are not promoting it cuz then everyone will start collecting it and the rarity of the product will disappear
not that it should be kept a secret but its likely that's what will happen

@@zamoth22 You really have a positive mind brother.
But our media doesn't think any good at all, they just sell bullshit. And people from Nepal already knows the difficulties of doing this job. You have to walk for 3-4 days in average through the harsh forest with many wild animals just to reach to the place where you can find Mad Honey. Height and lack of PPE is just another problem, but if you unfortunately get even a single bite by those particular bees, you will get sick for days, and if just get couple of bites then there are chances that you might loose your life. So that's why I think we will not see any huge queue any sooner for this job.
Anyway, Ramadan Kareem to you and your family my brother.

Not exactly, with the value drones can easily make the job more effortless, plus the honey doesn't do much, just another sham tbf

    • @Unchainedful
      @Unchainedful 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Outsiders from around the world already deals with this, and as the last comment stated the hives are being collected using drones at a much safer and faster rate. So currently businesses no longer need the farmers to climb cliffs to collect, they are cutting out the collectors and businesses are collecting it themselves. You can easily buy mad honey across the world. However depending on country regulations, the honey may be heavily altered. For example, in the US, no hallucination drugs are allowed to be imported to the US if it has no medical properties(mad honey is classes a schedule 1 drug, no medical properties). So in order to sell it in the US the honey must be altered to remove the hallucinogenic properties of the honey in order to sell in the US. So what you’re left with is just simply a more bitter honey.

A 32oz bottle/ 2lbs ? of it for $300 - that’s not expensive given the risk. Plenty of other things like perfume and
cosmetics cost much much more, for way less.

they should figure out how to keep them and grow the needed plant nearby. That would save them a lot of danger if they figured out a way to do it. Its not like they can increase production so much that the price will crash. Honey always remains relatively expensive after all.

A couple spoonfuls of this honey is what I need rn.🥹
In my late teens & 20s my friends and I would do shrooms, Isd, and ecstasy occasionally. Good times!
All were positive, fun, spiritual experiences. But, it's been decades. I don't know anyone who knows anyone who can get psychedelics. I live in LA & there's a Kush store three blocks from my house, but I can't function on weed. I wish they sold psilocybin gummies. I'm a little depressed & a little anxious on a regular basis. I'm not a big drinker and I hate taking pills.
A bite or two of a chocolate bar, or a cup of mushroom tea everyday would be a godsend for me.

Then hopefully Sir you'll be more astonished and intrigued by the fact that in the Muslim holy book the Quraan (we believe revealed to prophet muhammed over 1400yrs ago) God has dedicated a whole chapter on The Honey Bee and there is one verse in it which is just amazing and I would like to share it with you:
"And your Lord revealed to the honey bee:"make homes in the mountains, in the trees and the structures they raise. Then eat from all the fruits and go along the pathways of your Lord made easy for you. From their bellies comes out a drink of various colours in which there is a cure for people. Surely in that there is a sign for people who ponder". (Chapter 16 verse 68/69)
