Scott, brother...appreciate this sooo much. My brother just died of Covid. He flew for Alaska Airlines and was a HUGE JD fan. I sang Boy From the Country at his funeral. I was presently typing up my words at his service per request of my father when I came upon this video...just wanted you to know it warmed my heart....I thank you, sir.

I moved to Eugene, Oregon from San Jose, CA five years ago and the only thing I miss is being able to drive over to the John Denver Beach in Pacific Grove. Spent many an hour there just watching the waves crash over the rocks.
John: We love you and we miss you.

I Grew up on John Denver. He was so loved. My sister lives in Monterey, California, and has a boat there. She was on her boat that day they were retrieving him from it. She said it was a very sad thing to see. Anyway, thank you , Scott for this. I've been there, but its nice to see it again.

My dad introduced me to John Denver and I was hooked on him and his music forever. I even did The Flower that Shattered the Stone as my guitar solo in our recital. He called me into the other room and said Lori, listen to this and he had his old tape recorder with a John Denver tape inside. At that moment, I became a John Denver fan. R.I.P. John. I miss you.

Thank you so much for this Scott, John Denver was a wonderful singer and songwriter and yes I know about what happened with him being turned down with “We are the World”. He did so much for the starving in Africa, it was John Denver that got the Hunger Project started!! He travelled to Africa to witness for himself the devastation way before anyone else yet he wasn’t “Rock n Roll enough to join the others 😢

Thank you for sharing. John Denver is my favorite musician - his music is timeless, thougtful and peaceful. I lived in Pacific Grove from 1996-1997, right up the road from that spot. I was away for a weekend in Big Bear at the time of his passing, and remember watching hearing the news in sadness and simply wishing I was back home in Pacific Grove, walking on that trail along the water like I did almost daily while living there. Even though I now live in New York, I always return to Pacific Grove, esp to that spot, I take my kids, my mom, my family, my friends. It's a special place.

I’d like to think he’d have worked through any issues with this... and gone on to reach a global level of people and continued to advocate for environmental and social justice. RIP John Denver. It was my dad and step mom’s song at their wedding down the aisle.
I was ring bearer and about 7 years old or so.
My father would contemplate self deletion to this song while being smashed on brandy and vodka also and I was made to sit with him during allot of these times.
The song is a wild state of mixed memories so deep I don’t think ever ever heard the song without being emotionally overwhelmed.
I should read the lyrics because I can barely hear them-

Met John twice in my life…..he was genuine, very friendly and so very much underestimated how much he meant and was loved by people. I walked away a better person each time after meeting him.
Saw him perform close to 30 times and loved every second of it….
    John, we hardly knew ye.
“Come dance with the west winds and touch on the mountain tops, sail o’er the canyons and up to the stars and reach fir the heavens and hope for the future…..and all that we can be, not what we are.”
    - John Denver

I remember when all of the John Denver hits were on the radio. AM radio was king in those days, yet his music permeated the very fabric of North American culture. Your honest intro Scott is genuine and I can say I feel the same way now appreciating and embracing that musical genius which John Denver songs brings to humanity. Denver was a product of an isolated and shadowed childhood. He was always trying to prove himself to his authoritarian father, and in his individuality and personal mentality he never gained that approval. In the 21st century John Denver has received his just due as an icon of freedom. He has proved himself at the end of the day.

Scott, thanks. I'm on the John Denver Fan Club page and one of the members posted the link to your tribute. I've seen a few other posts from people who've visited the site, and yours is by far the most appropriate and respectful. Glad you explained that the cause was ruled as Pilot Error--it it terribly upsetting that some mistakenly think alcohol was the cause. The autopsy showed there was none in his system, nor any illegal substances at all. We fans appreciate your post.

John Denver has had a very profound impact on my life, its been life changing honestly, though my love for his music can be traced back three generations now a recent deep dive into it is helping out of a tough spot in life and reminding me everyday that everything will be okay. It started with my Grandma who would play John Denver with my dad and his brothers when they would take trips half way across the nation to California back in the late 1970's / early 1980's and often times when passing through the Redwood National forest. This made an impact on my dad who many years later took me with him at a young age to get the live album known as ''An Evening with John Denver''.
We listened to it all the way home and I it was so different, John Denver's lyrics of love, nature and joy of life itself were very comforting, almost like being sung a lullaby, as was the gentle strum of his guitar, I was entranced by the majestic Rocky Mountain High. These days, I struggle with lots of the same things we all do. Career concerns, fear of loss, occasional confusion and upset with the current state of the world, but then I listen to John Denver and he tells me don't worry about any of that, look at the mountains and the streams, you see all these living trees that make oxygen for you to breath, don't you just fucking love that! His music is what a Bob Ross painting would sound like.
Thanks for the music John, I am going to plant a tree in your name. Wish you were here so I could tell you how much your work is helping me deal with a tough time in my own life. Your end was tragic but your music has rippled through my family for three generations now and will for many more. You made a lasting impact on me and my family.

In the 80’s I worked for a snowmaking company. We had flown to Aspen to do a snowmaking demonstration at Buttermilk.
On the day we were leaving and loading our plane to fly back to North Carolina, our private plane was parked right next to a Lear jet, I looked up and noticed the guy standing beside it was John Denver. He was getting ready to fly somewhere to play golf. He was nice to take time and say hi and we chatted for a couple of minutes and said so long. I’ll never forget that as long as I live. I was a Sophomore in High School when John Denver died and still remember my Mom coming home crying from getting the news on NPR ( KPBS here in San Diego, CA ) of his death on her drive home from work. I just hugged her and hated to see her so hurt. Now a week-before-last she was in the ICU in a medical induced coma, for a medical emergency, and when the Musical Therapy came by all I could think for them to play was ‘Country Roads’. Mom is doing a bit better now; still in the Hospital, but alert and walking a few more steps everyday. John Denver will always mean a ton to us. Thanks for your video!

I was living in Santa Cruz at the time. Heartbreaking. From what I heard was that it was an experimental design type of aircraft that's why the fuel switch was in a different place. John wanted to fly something new. Sad, because he was just about to get back into music. Oh the songs we're missing. He was a prolific writer. Every song he wrote sounded like you've heard it before. It would have been prevented if he switched fuel tanks BEFORE running out of fuel. He lost lift and went into a left or right wing stall when reached over to select the fuel and rotated the yoke causing the spin. Second mistake was flying to low and to slow!!! Beautiful Scott! John was the best. I was fortunate to open up for John in concert about three weeks before he lost his life. It was a benefit concert in Baltimore for Cystic Fibrosis. It just so happened the Orioles had an afternoon game that day and John was taken to the game by our band leader and concert organizer. For the 7th inning stretch the Orioles always play Thank God I’m A Country Boy. John was introduced by the announcer and went down and got on top of the Orioles dugout and clapped and sang along to the song. I wasn’t at the game but saw the video later. John was in very good spirits that day. He seemed very happy. His band mates were all great guys. On the way back to the arena from the stadium John told our band leader that he hadn’t done Thank God I’m A Country Boy in many years. On a whim he said let’s play that song as an encore tonight and have you and your band come up and play it with me. We had a fiddle in our band and Jon our fiddler knew how to play it. So we rehearsed the song for about 30 minutes before the show. I will never forget how John came up to each one of us individually and introduced himself by saying, hi I’m John. He treated us like an equal and never tried to act like the star. Very humble and very kind. I became a huge John Denver fan that evening. My wife and I never truly realized just how great a singer he was till that evening. He blew us all away with his voice and songs. I will always cherish that moment in time and John is singing with the angels no question in my mind. An incredible talent taken way too soon. Thanks for sharing this video!

Scott: I loved John for his music & passion for wildlife conservation. I met a fan on a FB page for John & we became so close. She flew from Australia to meet me. We spent one night in Monterey. We took Amtrak to Colorado, rented a car & drove to Aspen in June. There is a beautiful sanctuary there in his honor. We, by pure coincidence, ended up being invited to the ceremony moving his peace pole & that was conducted by a Ute elder. It was an amazing trip. A trip of a lifetime in fact. Aspen was gorgeous. Thanks for this!

A feeling of feeling at one with John's music and great sadness for the loss of John. The only solace I found was that John died when he was enjoying his passion of flying. Long gone but never forgotten.

I remember when I was a kid my mom constantly listen to John Denver I hated it felt like my mom wasn't cool. Now that I am 38 I actually understand appreciate and respect John Denver's music. This coming from someone who listens to Cradle of Filth Type O Negative Marilyn Manson Rammstein Etc...BUT sometimes I just need to mellow out and that is when I start listening to John Denver with my mom and remembering the old days. My mom was so crushed and heartbroken when she heard that John Denver had died. I completely understand it now because I felt the same way when Peter Steele died. R.I.P John gone but never forgotten thank you for all the music you wrote all the stories in your songs. You didn't get very much credit when you were here on Earth yet we all know that you are already Legend.

Driving into Aspen in 1976 during a near-blizzard, I slipped off the right side of Colorado Hwy. 82 near ASE about a 1/2 mile from town. I decided to walk the short distance to the first service station to hire a tow truck to pull me out of the ditch. As soon as I started to walk, a Jeep stopped along side me, and the drive asked, "Need a ride?" Of course, I said, "Yes" and hopped in. The driver said, "My name's John. It's a pretty rough day to be walking out here." I thanked him for stopping, introduced myself and said that I knew who he was. He replied, "Far out." [Really]. I said that I owned most of his albums starting with his first commercial album, "Rhymes and Reasons," from 1969. Three or four minutes later he dropped me at the Exxon station, I believe it was. I thanked him, and that was that. I was stunned the day he died.

Thank you for taking me on the journey of his crash site. I'm From South Africa and the senary is very different from what i Envisioned.
The Long Ezy is one of the most beautiful kit plains. After Johns crash & investigation into the crash. The company producing the designs, changed the position of tank selector to the front. If i remember correctly I think it was positioned at the edge under the chair. To give the pilot easier access.

Original design has tank selector in front. John’s Long EZ was modified with a “torque tube” that had the handle over the left shoulder. John likely pushed down on one of the RUDDER pedals, pushing the plane into a dive that he couldn’t recover from.

Hi Scott, nice video. Thanks for sharing. Interesting to see this site. I was at a nearby restaurant the day this happened- shocking. You seem to have the story pretty straight from what I've ever heard. The control mechanism you were trying to describe at John's right foot is a rudder (there are 2). They contribute to the steering of the aircraft, specifically the tail. If John accidentally hit the right rudder as he was trying to reach back to switch fuel tanks, he could have easily thrown the plane into a spin and out of control. To my knowledge, Long Easys, the kind of plane he was in, are known to be very fast and not the most stable (Kind of a weird design). Might not have taken much to throw him out of control, plus the fact that tank was out of fuel in the first place. A tragic loss of a very talented musician. RIP.

John Denver’s music will always be timeless! John Denver was to the 70’s what Frank Sinatra was to the 40’s! John Denver dedicated his life to so many wonderful causes, by using his fame, to advocate for them! Not the other way around! I believe he was truly a wonderful human being & the world is poorer for having lost him! I believe he is one of our nation’s greatest treasures! October 12th 1997 was a sad day & will always be & he will forever live in my heart!❤️
