John Denver's all-time best song! And this is his best performance of it ever. There's nothing like driving a pick-up truck across the continental divide in summer in Montana with this song going full blast. That was 20 years ago I last did that. I listen to this song even today and I'm back in Big Sky Country loving life.
I'm 71, former USMC Officer, rtd FBI Agent....from Montana. I traveled the world, missing terribly my folks, friends and Montana....John managed to "patch" the hole in my heart so many times I can't begin to count. I pray he's singing for the LORD...hope when I get there, he has a concert! Thanks John!
Born and raised in Philadelphia, but Montana is my home. I fled an abusive adoptive family, and this state has really embraced me with open arms. Been here five years and I have no intention to leave.
Montana is a wildly beautiful place - been there a couple of times, but for me Michigan is home and always will be. For me, nothing is better than sailing the Great Lakes. But I can sure understand falling in love with Montana.
I'm from Tasmania and I enjoyed reading what you wrote, My father and I used to listen to John every Friday night, As the west coast of Tassie is very rugged and full of mountains it felt like he was singing about our small rugged little place , I hope my dad is in heaven listening to John
My favorite version is the one with Emmylou Harris. I grew up on this concert (it was recorded, so, commercials and all) so I’d watch it all the time, but this woman (don’t know her name) just never did it for me. I wish he and Emmylou performed it in a concert (or if they did, there’s no video of it). The only other version I like of this song is a live performance (it’s here on TH-cam) with a woman named Elizabeth Lamers (she was a background singer in three of his albums) although you can’t hear her as equally as John in that video.
@@winterblossom9546 Mine, too. I don't know who she is, but I know it isn't Emmylou Harris. The only reason I can come up with that JD didn't use her is that she was unavailable.
John Denver is fantastic, of course, but I'd like to put in a word here for his backup singer (the woman with red hair). Not only does she know how to accompany a main singer, but I really enjoy her "theatrical-ness" (for want of a better word). She's so into this song and committed to the performance -- it's charming and infectious. That style of performance is not so common nowadays; it's a shame.
The same thing occurred to me. In fact, I just made a comment about that woman a few minutes ago; it sounded rich when her vocals kicked in at "His mother's brother took him in...."
poorjf how do you think I feel? Everyone saying that JD, Mama Cass etc. are terrible. That everyone these days listens to that Billy Eyelash (or whatever it is) and tell me to learn some “real music” on guitar. This is real music not that crap nowadays!
As a lifelong lover and creator of punk rock music, John Denver is right up there as one of humanity's truly GREAT musical artists. There are very, VERY few like him and it will be a very long time before this human species ever sees another as great as him. He was an airplane pilot, too. Music and flight, the only two reasons I didn't kill myself before I turned five years old. Fuck this world, but I live for music and flight. Nothing else has transcended the bitter desperate pursuit of money, property and sex except for those two magnificent human achievements. Peace and love for all my fellow humans who are artists and/or aviators. No idea what the point of all this bullshit is except for the love of art, and the love of adventure.
Pat Hawk (female backup vocals) really brings fun, heart and brightness to John Denver's superb performance. I'm glad she was brought out to the front for the audience to see.
@@lizgorman5634 YW. I was so impressed by her wonderful, enthusiastic backup vocals during "The Wildlife Concert" that I just HAD to find out who she was! In the original album recording, Emmy Lou Harris did the female vocals. She did an excellent job. Yet, to me, it was a "bluegrassy," Smokey Mountain feel she gave the song. On the other hand, Pat Hawks, in this concert, gave this song a Rocky Mountain high feeling. Yep, Montana has the Rocky Mountains. Great job, Pat!
An awesome tune, possibly my most favourite JD song ever. For those in the comments who refer to “that women”, Emmy Lou Harris is an absolute talent in her own right. Bless ELH & JD.

I get that. Would've liked to've met him.
Anyone out there ever met him?
I'm guessin' down-to-earth as his songs ... it's just in him, aint it?
God took him to sing for him. He loaned him to the world for a short time and he wanted him back to sing for him.
Don't know how this makes you feel but I want you to submit your thoughts on this year's tribute remembrance day of John's this year, on this note albums of all his songs will be made available via CDs, Internet.
Thanks for the much love all these years 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼☝💞

The best Music you will ever hear has got John Denver all over it.
Such joy! Truly amazing performance! The world lost that talent way too early, but the music lives on forever...
The best salesman Colorado ever had
I love the Bitterroot valley. I moved out here almost 7 years ago.
Magical guitar, great song writer, pure show man, blessed person!!!
John's music takes us all to beautiful places, back to times that might have been just a bit gentler.
John's death was true loss the music industry but not everyone will not recognize that.
do you think charlie rich was jealous
Who
Phenomenal
In the original album recording, Emmy Lou Harris did the female vocals. She did an excellent job. Yet, to me, it was a "bluegrassy," Smokey Mountain feel she gave the song. On the other hand, Pat Hawks, in this concert, gave this song a Rocky Mountain high feeling. Yep, Montana has the Rocky Mountains. Great job, Pat!
Absolutely brilliant, cant stop watching and listening and the lady just a bonus ,complimenting John ,love it 😍
Such beautiful music, John Denver never fails to completely relax me
Can't WAIT to see him again!!!
What a performer, they just don't come any better.( RIP Jon Boy) my good friend, Jacqueline & I send our love to you. Hasta luego TJR Canary Islands.
An awesome tune, possibly my most favourite JD song ever. For those in the comments who refer to “that women”, Emmy Lou Harris is an absolute talent in her own right. Bless ELH & JD.
