      Without a doubt!!! 24 years before this in 1973 we lost the great "Jim Croce" in a plane crash. Jim was just really getting started. He could have possibly
      been as big as John! So sad, all the great talented people we lost in Plane Crashes to name a few we say a silent prayer for:

    There he was...wrestling with that fuel valve while low-and-fast when he didn't have to... in the struggle inadvertently jamming his right foot against the rudder stop to leverage his hand's reach over his shoulder...while the airport was so close. I was in my LongEZ a couple months before John went down; my right shoe slipped-off and stuck the rudder deployed over Hot Springs, AK.....there was no 'figggin way I could safely descend until I got that damm shoe freed-up! He simply forgot to fly the airplane....a priceless lesson this man hopefully leaves for all of us about everything else needing focus each of us does in life.

    My dad built a Long EZ in our home garage from 1982-1984 when he was working at Mostek in Carrollton, TX.
    During his first test flight, a friend recorded from another plane. The song that was dubbed over, was Rocky Mountain High.
    Spooky.
    Dads plane crashed in on March 28th, 1998, my 14th birthday. No fatalities, but it was also caused by a fuel issue. (Vapor lock)

      I just find it bizarre that when John Denver’s plane crashed, I knew EXACTLY what fuel switch he had been reaching for.
      The accident report said he had used a pillow as a backrest to reach the controls (since he was 5’9”), but counterintuitively, it is suspected that he inadvertently pressed the rudder pedal in order to provided leverage to reach the fuel transfer valve above and behind the pilots seat, and that’s what caused the crash.

    I remember when he died. I was living in northern California and it was a big story. This was in the early days of the internet and few people knew about experimental aviation. There was a lot of speculation about the Long EZ, and when your only news sources were newspapers and the 6 o'clock news, it was hard to get comprehensive information. It was a big shock later when the NTSB said he ran out of gas. Such a huge loss over such an inadvertent mistake. To think that if he had just filled the plane with fuel, the valve wouldn't be an issue and he'd probably still be with us. The lifelong parallels between Denver and Jim Morrison are really interesting. Such great talents taken from us too soon!

    To this day, as a pilot myself, I find it so hard to believe that such an experienced pilot as John Denver would purchase that Long EZ aircraft with a very badly modified fuel tank selector valve that relocated it to - of all places - behind the pilot, where it was difficult to reach! That Brain-Dead modification should have been disallowed by the FAA and the aircraft's airworthiness certificate should have been suspended until the valve was restored back to the location specified in the original design blueprints. Making things all the worse was the fact that the valve was so hard to turn that a pair of pliers were needed to help move it! That DISASTER of a fuel tank selector valve should have been a Deal Breaker for John that should have made him walk away from that death trap of an aircraft.
    My disbelief in this situation doesn't end there, because I also find it very hard to believe that such an experienced pilot as John Denver would neglect to perform the vitally important pre-takeoff checks, using the aircraft's pre-takeoff checklist - before he taxied onto the runway for what would turn out be his final flight, because of his fatal error of failing to run through the pre-takeoff checklist. One of the most crucially important items on the pre-takeoff checklist addresses the fuel tank selection: Fuel Tank Selector Valve - Set to the Fullest Tank.
    Because of this fatal blunder, John executed a takeoff with the fuel tank selector valve set to the tank with the lowest amount of fuel, and at 500 feet above the ground, his engine sputtered and quit from Fuel Starvation. From what the final investigation has determined, was that John apparently pressed his right foot against the floor to bolster himself and help him twist his body around to access and adjust the fuel tank selector valve located behind his left shoulder and when he pressed his foot down, he inadvertently stomped on the right rudder, which rolled the aircraft hard to the right and flipped it over into a nose-down dive that was impossible to recover from because of the close proximity to the ground. The aircraft dove straight down from 500 feet - the height of a 50-story building (half the height of New York's Empire State Building) and it impacted the water at a very high rate of speed and with such a massive amount of force that it killed John instantly upon impact. What a sad, sudden, and tragic ending to such a kind, wonderful and exceptionally talented, and gifted person, whose great music and golden voice have enriched all of us and will memorialize him forever in our minds and hearts. RIP John Denver.

      Thank you for an analysis of the accident. I was hoping this video would cover the info you listed and maybe some additional information; but it did not. BTW, 500 feet may be tall for a building, but it is way too little altitude for recovery from an unexpected unusual attitude.

      Well done Bill. I was also actively flying when this tragic accident happened. Also being a guitar player I was devastated.
      I also knew several people that owned or built the Very Easy aircraft. It is an aircraft you have to be attentive to at all times. One of my acquaintances had an accident with his and quit flying all together.
      With his experience and back ground I'm sure John was not a slouch behind the stick. It should have never happened that way but stuff happens.
      Yes John Denver is still missed by us old people. :O)

      @bar9973 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It would seem that John's tendency to be impulsive cost him his life. He needed to recognize that his frame of mind was not suitable for flying that day, especially considering his inexperience with that aircraft. Some Days are Diamonds Some Days are Stone. I continue to enjoy his music including the lesser known songs.

    • @BillDeFalcoGFE
      @BillDeFalcoGFE ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@georgegilbert7347 Thanks for your comment and yes you are absolutely right about the height. Though 500 feet (50 stories) is very high up, it's not nearly enough altitude to recover from a nose-down dive. John would have needed at least 5 times that height - at least 2,500 feet to safely recover from the nose-down dive that he suddenly found himself in. A similar predicament befell JFK Jr when he inadvertently stalled his Piper Saratoga at 1,000 feet on a dark, moonless night landing approach over the water to Martha's Vineyard. The 'Hershey Bar' wing of the Saratoga has a very nasty stall characteristic whereby when the airspeed drops below the minimum speed needed to keep the wing flying and it stalls - it has a very strong tendency for the left wing to suddenly drop down and swing the aircraft around into a nose-down dive, which would require a minimum of 2,500 feet to recover from. At that time JFK Jr had not yet completed his Instrument Rating and he had only been flying his new Saratoga for a short time and was not up to speed and fully competent in operating the complex aircraft, which had a variable-pitch prop and retractable landing gear. He made the situation all the worse for himself and his passengers with his poor decision to not heed the advice of his Flight Instructor, who offered to come along with him on the flight, after telling him that he (his Flight Instructor) was not comfortable enough with his level of proficiency in flying in 'blind conditions' and that making an approach to Martha's Vinyard at night over the water with no moon would be just like flying blind through a cloud with no visual references outside of the windows to determine the attitude of the aircraft. Had JFK Jr taken his Flight Instructor up on his offer to come along on that flight, that tragic crash into the ocean that killed JFK Jr, his wife, and his wife's sister - would never have happened.

      Denver must have had a great voice if the songs live sounded like the studio version, and before the days of Auto-Tune. Nowadays most artists sound nothing like they do in studio, and only make up for it by having a flashy show with lots of smoke, mirrors and dancers.

    John Denver is the reason I learned to play the guitar and write songs. When I did my Air Force Training in Denver in 1977, I recorded every song available. I got to meet John in 1992, but by then he had become a liberal politician and lobbyist and no fun to be around. We visited the Starwood in Aspen but turned away at the gate. I knew John, somewhat. I'm a former F-15C and retired airline pilot. I knew John through our shared love of falconry actually, although we often talked airplanes.
    He let that fuel valve distract him, which is just sad. That conversion is relatively common, I've flown several varieze and longeze's with the fuel selector in that position. It really isn't that difficult to reach, so I don't think location was a problem. I've read reports that stated the valve was VERY hard to turn , which is something his prebuy inspection should have caught and fixed prior to purchase.
    It's such a shame to lose him to such a ridiculous problem. He forgot the pilots first rule. When something goes wrong, first and foremost , AVIATE. Fly the damned plane. A controlled crash is almost always survive able.

    • @DudeTours
      @DudeTours  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting to hear the conversion is relatively common, it is always made out to sound like a horrible modification that lead to the incident in the stories and reports. Thanks for sharing the story and info.

      @preacherF-15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DudeTours Being a homebuilt, there is a lot of room for individual modification. I think the Varieze line is one of the most modified homebuilts.
      I've flown turboprop powered versions, I've seen a turbofan version, there are versions built specifically for aerobatics there was a company in Tulsa that had a fleet of remote controlled longeze's that were modified for high altitude flight. They were flown from inside a control room trailer for collecting weather data.
      So just relocating the fuel valve is a very, very minor modification. If you run the valve the way burt designed it, the fuel lines run inside the cockpit for a short span. Some people don't like that, and the only way to keep them external is to do it the way John's was done. It's a little awkward to reach I suppose, but not a problem. The issue John had was that in this position it's easy to turn the valve , but almost impossible to get a really good grip on it and apply serious pressure. Normally you don't need to, the valve turns easily... But John's did not. It was binding, and that means it has an internal failure of some kind. Yet nobody addressed this known issue.
      I've snap rolled longeze's hundreds of times, which is what John inadvertently did. He owned a Christen eagle and had some aerobatic experience, although he was no expert. Still, a snap roll is basic stuff, and I kept wondering why he didn't recover, he had plenty of room, a fact Burt later proved by recreating the events of the crash. I still wonder why he went straight in the way he did. The longeze is a very tough, responsive bird- it goes where you point it. He inadvertently went full right rudder, the plane snapped over. He should have equalized the rudders, then recover from the dive. Easy as pie. But he went in almost vertically...that makes no sense to me. The only thing I can think of is if he hit his head on the canopy when the plane snapped and stunned or even knocked himself out. You can ring your own bell that way, for sure.
      Whatever happened, I sure miss that punk.

    The truth of the Crash, John was taking the plane up solo for the 1st time. He had virtually no experience on the Long-Eze. He had been doing circuits, On the last take off as he was climbing out the engine spluttered Denver reached up over his shoulder to switch tanks he had to reach farther than he expected and as he turned his opposite foot pushed on the rudder causing the plane to spin in to the ocean. Burt Rutan did the post crash investigation as the inventor and designer. and he was able to exactly replicate the failure and was able to pull out before the crash.

    very nicely done ,Thankyou i’m almost 60 years of age , i’ve suffered 6 Strokes throughout my adult life one of which was a Major Stroke that destroyed 90 to 95% of the Right hemisphere of y brain things were touch and go i needed to do Exstensive Rehab to relearn how to Walk,Talk ,Eat , and beleive it or not breathe it took more than 10 years to get a grip,on my Cognitive Skills just to get through a normal day according to many of my longtime freinds and family i’m doing quite well we discovered during the process that some doctors had my Prescription Medications messed up and that slowed down my Recovery got that fixed and now i feel like my old self a with the minor exception of some Paralysis in my left Arm and Leg some of my Doctors call me a Walking ,Talking Miracle for me i’m just who i am John Denver and his music during my long recovery was one of the only things that gave me hope and Inspiration along with a sense of Calmness laying in many HospitalBeds Scared out of what mind i had left his Gift has been nothing but Joy to me and i really want to saybThankyou for the kind words and stories about him in this video you did a Wonderfuljl Job and helped myself put some more Closure to the Tragic Event of losing such a Important person in my Life May God Bless him and all you other Pilots out there

    I was at his last Reno, NV Concert, where he played a song titled Take Your Tongue Out Of My Mouth Because I'm Kissing You Goodbye. The day John crashed was a sad day. So much talent lost.

    Years back, I was backpacking in the maroon bells with some friends, hearing John Denver songs. I heard them even through the night and the next morning as we summitted, and even the way down the mountain, nobody else ever heard them. A few months later, I was watching a PBS special, and they said John Denver’s ashes were spread on Maroon pass, and my jaw hit the floor!
